CHAPTER FIFTEEN
ONE WEEK LATER
It had been a week since Danny had been transferred to his regular room now. The doctor had gotten the CAT scan results and informed his patient, along with his friends and teammates, that his brain concussion seemed to be healing perfectly. Its side effects have also decreased more and more each day. Just yesterday, the doctor also checked Danny's broken arm and it seemed to be doing fine, so he decided to remove the cast, which has been on his arm for over two weeks, and replaced it with a sling. His thigh wound had also healed and thankfully, an infection didn't set in.
Physically, Danny seemed to be healing, of course, excluding his cervical degenerative neck disc. This was a lifetime condition. His progress made everyone, including him, happy, but mostly relieved. Emotionally, and mentally, he seemed to be having a long road ahead of him. But Danny never worried too much, because his team was always with him, never leaving his side. Grace and Rachel also visited Danny three times, and seeing his daughter always made him feel better.
Today was going to be a challenging day for Danny because he was starting his first session of Physical Therapy. Steve decided to be with Danny, so Chin and Kono had gone to work. Steve was feeling a lot better lately, ever since Danny seemed to be healing and doing great. Two days ago, he had suffered yet another pain attack. But that time, the whole team was there, and the doctor used this situation as a way to teach them how to use and apply a TENS unit. They had kept one in Danny's room to gain more time whenever he had one of the pain attacks. So now, Steve, Chin and Kono, were all capable of applying the TENS unit on Danny whenever he needed it, because after all, the doctor won't be with him forever. As soon as he leaves the hospital, it's up to him and his team.
Steve was sitting by his partner's bed. They were chatting and talking, to pass the time. But Steve knew that there was still some serious talking to do with Danny. Danny never mentioned the fact that Stan caused all of this from the second he found out, and knowing his partner, Steve knew that sooner or later Danny will want to talk about it, and he would always be here for him. He had also not mentioned his supposed resignation from Five-0, so that was also something Steve would have to talk about with Danny.
Then, the doctor entered the room. "Good morning, Detective Williams, how are we doing today?" asked the doctor.
"I'm fine, doc. And please, you can call me Danny, I think it's safe to say that we're best friends now" answered Danny with a smirk, and in a sarcastic tone.
The doctor smiled. Danny was one of the few patients that had humor, and he always seemed to light up the mood. "Okay, Danny. Well, it's time now for your first session of Physical Therapy. I'll have a nurse join you in a couple of minutes to take you there. I just came in to check on you, but you seem fine, so I guess you're all good."
"I am doc, don't worry" replied Danny. Then, the doctor left the room. Steve spoke after.
"Danny, you sure you're up to this?" he asked, worriedly. He didn't want his partner to hurt himself, he was recovering, but it seemed a bit early to him, and it scared him to think that Danny could get hurt again.
"Steve, don't worry. The doc said that today they'll just work on my neck and maybe my back, I'm fine. Plus, my arm is almost back to normal, and I'm still here. I'm good, really" responded the Jersey native.
"Alright, but I'm coming with you, I'm not leaving you" said Steve.
"Looks like you can't bear to be away from me these days, huh?" stated the detective, jokingly.
Steve chuckled. "Oh no, trust me, I can't wait to leave, you're driving me crazy."
"Whatever you say, babe. Love you" answered Danny, with a smile.
"I love you too, Danno."
Right then, a nurse entered the room. She then took Danny to his session, and Steve came with them. When they arrived, they met the physical therapist. She seemed nice and Danny liked her. She then started explaining the procedure. She told Danny that the doctor ordered that he should undergo four sessions here in the hospital, two per week. After that, he would have to come to the hospital. She then explained how she would alternate between passive and active physical therapy. The active physical therapy requires more movement and energy, so they were going to start with the passive physical therapy.
Danny then got into place, and they started. To keep his mind off things, and the pain that he could feel, Steve offered to help by talking to him and distract him. The therapist admired Steve's care for Danny.
The physical therapist started the first session with deep tissue massage. It targets spasms and chronic muscle tension. She would use direct pressure and friction to try to release the tension in Danny's soft tissues such as his ligaments, his tendons or his muscles. She then went on to try and release tension in his shoulders, neck and back. The session took over 45 minutes. Danny felt some pain, but it was bearable, and Steve was there for him and tried distracting him as much as possible.
When they got back to the room, Danny laid down on his bed and sighed, in exhaustion. It was a tough first session, he hadn't moved for over two weeks now. But he didn't feel like sleeping. Instead, he just started staring at the ceiling above him, and Steve knew that something was up.
"You wanna talk?" asked Steve. He didn't want to pressure him, so he just asked him simply.
Danny turned his head to Steve and just looked at him. "What is there to talk about?"
Steve sighed, "I know that you're still hurting Danny, and I really want to help you, but no pressure. If you don't want to talk, it's fine."
Danny then turned his head back up to the ceiling and felt the lump in his throat. He had so much to talk about, so much. He has a lot of things to say, but he doesn't Steve to feel overwhelmed. He wants to cry, and scream, and let everything out. He just stared at the ceiling for well over 20 seconds. He then realized that the more he keeps the pain inside of him and doesn't talk to anyone, the more he'll feel sad and depressed, and he doesn't want that anymore.
"You know, this whole thing is messed up, Steve. I mean, at this point I don't care about my other injuries, it's just that damn disc that's ruining everything. And why.. because of what… huh?! What?!" His voice started to rise, he was angry, he was sad. "Because of Stan. I.. I just… I never imagined that he would do something like that, you know. I don't understand, I mean, he just turned into a criminal, just like that? I mean, Grace practically lived with this man, Steve. She lived with a criminal, how do you think that makes me feel. Rachel married him. Damn it, Steve, they have a one year old baby. I mean, the thought of kids living in the same house with a criminal is enough to scare me and make me angry. But on top of that, he does all of this to me, and to you guys. I mean, look at you Steve, because of me, because of this, you were barely able to get some sleep. You stayed with me here the whole time, always checking up on me, never leaving my side, and that goes to Chin and Kono too. Don't get me wrong, I really appreciate everything you guys did and are doing for me, but look at what he put you through. And I know what happened to you, Denise told me that you broke down. She heard you but decided to leave you alone. And all of this, because of me and Stan. And this psycho now is about to leave me jobless too, it's like an offer you know, I got a two in one or something." Danny softly smiled at that last comment, but the hurt was more than evident in his eyes, and the same goes for Steve. He wanted to hug him tightly, and tell him that it's not his fault, that he's there for him and that everything will be alright. He wanted to cry, to encourage Danny, to help him, but he was too heartbroken for that right now. It hurt him like hell to see his brother still suffering. "It's just too much, Steve, it's too much" said Danny, his voice breaking. He tried to fight back the tears but they managed to make their way down his cheeks.
Steve did the same, Danny was hurting so much and it hurt him. He fought back his own tears, he then licked his lips signaling that he was ready to talk. "Danny, I know how that must feel like, but listen to me, none of this, and I truly mean none of this, is your fault. Stan caused all of this, not you, and I personally put him behind bars, and I made sure that he doesn't try and hurt you, or anyone ever again. And I'm always gonna be here for you, and so will Chin and Kono. And don't even try and worry about me, I may have had some breakdowns, but I'm fine, it's all good. Don't blame this on you, it's not your fault, you hear me? It's not your fault Danny."
"I know, I just can't believe that Stan did this, you know. Did he tell you why?" questioned Danny.
"He said that when you won the lawsuit against Rachel last month he felt like you ruined his plans and his dreams of raising his own family on the mainland, something like that, It was all about revenge I guess" replied Steve.
Danny only managed to nod. "You know, this whole disease thing really messed my life up. I mean, I could lose my job, for one, and I could end up paralyzed in the next 10 years or the next 5 years who knows. It's great isn't it?" added Danny, sarcastically.
"Danny, you're gonna be okay, you won't be paralyzed, you got me? It won't happen, and you won't lose your job either, you won't lose it" responded Steve. He didn't exactly know if he was only saying this as support for Danny or also trying to tell himself that very thing, because he was also pretty much hoping that this wouldn't happen to his partner.
"I hope so" said Danny.
Just then, Chin and Kono arrived. "Good morning, Danny" said Kono, with a smile. She then approached him and kissed him on the cheek. Chin then patted him on the shoulder, smiling at him.
"What are you guys doing here?" asked Steve.
"We just finished the paperwork, and since we had nothing in particular, we came here to give you guys a visit" declared Chin.
"Okay, well since you're all here, I have something that I would like to share with all of you" said Danny, with a smile.
"What is it?" demanded Kono. Since he was smiling, she figured that it was good news, she hoped so at least.
"Well, as you all know, last week I was close from resigning and leaving Five-0, but I thought about it, and I realized that I may have been wrong about it this whole time. Without you, I don't know where I would be now, honestly speaking, and without you, I don't think I'd be able to live my life happily. I mean, there's Grace, but you guys changed my life. Now, I know that with my disc, I'll have to be careful, and I know that a lot of things are going to change, but what I know is that I'm not leaving Five-0, at least not any time soon" announced Danny. He had thought about it for the whole week. He knows that he's taking a risk, but he can't lose his job, nor his ohana. Plus, without a job, he can't raise Grace, can't pay his rent, and won't live a happy life. Sure, there are some major changes coming, but he wasn't ready to leave his ohana like that.
Chin, Steve and Kono were all smiling, and happy. Steve felt like a huge weight was lifted off his shoulders, and he couldn't be any happier. "Danny, I could kiss you right now, I'm so happy, buddy" said Steve, with a grin, tapping his shoulder.
"Good decision, brah" enounced Chin with a smile.
"And without you, this task force would feel empty, and this ohana wouldn't be the same" declared Kono, smiling broadly at Danny.
"And one more thing, I want to thank you all, really, from the bottom of my heart, for everything you guys did for me, for the past two weeks, and for taking good care of Grace, and for putting Stan behind bars. Really, thank you so much" said Danny.
"Anytime, Danno. We always got your back" answered Steve, with a smile. With that, the four team members spent the next hour chatting, and laughing all together, knowing that Five-0, and their ohana was back.

EIGHT DAYS LATER
"Detective, I can't believe I'm actually saying this, but it was a pleasure treating you. I hope the next time we see each other will be in different circumstances" declared the doctor. Danny was finally being discharged from the hospital. He has completed his four physical therapy sessions in the hospital and was on the right track of the recovery. Although he had suffered two pain attacks in the last eight days, it was nothing to worry about, because this was now going to be part of his life, forever.
"Well, I hope we do meet in different circumstances, doc. And also, give my thanks and regards to Denise and all the nurses who helped me, they were all nice with me, I think I'm their favorite patient anyways" said Danny.
"Will do, detective. Now as I told you, you got your medication and a TENS unit, and they'll have to be with you anytime, because without them, you can't treat the pain attacks" stated the doctor.
"Don't worry, doc, we'll take good care of him, and we'll make sure he doesn't forget them" replied Steve.
"Well, in that case, goodbye Detective Williams, and take care" said the doctor, smiling softly.
"Thanks doc" answered Danny, with a smile on his face. With that, Steve and Danny both made their way out of the hospital. Danny was so happy to finally see sunlight. He had missed the outer world so much. After all, being locked up in a hospital for three weeks isn't so good, especially for a guy like Danny.
As they approached Steve's blue Silverado, Danny started feeling uneasy. He began sweating and became hesitant. He slowed down, and started panting, as if he had been running for the past hour. Steve immediately got worried.
"Danny, buddy, you're alright?" asked Steve, with concern.
"Uh.. uh.. yeah, I'm fine, just… just give me a second" said Danny. He started feeling uncomfortable, and looking at Steve's car made it worse.
Steve then instantly remembered the conversation he had with the doctor when this whole nightmare first started. Unfortunately, it is possible that Detective Williams could wind up having PTSD or any traumatic disorder upon entering a vehicle for instance. Danny's facing PTSD, and Steve immediately knew what to do. "Danny, listen to me carefully, if you want we can go back to the hospital."
"No.. no, I'm not going back in there. Just… just give me a second, I need to breathe."
Steve then just stood by Danny, with his arm around his back, for support. Steve hated this situation as much as Danny did.
"Uh, Steve, I don't think I can do this. I… I can't get in the car" voiced Danny. He just realized that it was fear, he was scared of getting inside a car. Damn you, Danny.
"Danno, listen, we have to get out of here. Look, I'll drive as slow as you want, okay? And we can stop and take a break whenever you feel like it, alright? I'm here, Danny, I'm right here. C'mon pal, I got you, don't worry." Steve then started walking slowly, while Danny nodded at him. He opened the passenger door, and gently helped Danny get in.
As soon, as he got in, he could see Danny being very uneasy. He wasn't moving, and he was sweating. His hands were also very shaky. "I'm right here, buddy. I'm just gonna go in, okay?"
Steve then closed the door slowly, and made his way to the driver's side of the car. He then climbed in and gently shut the door. He then looked at his partner compassionately. "Listen to me Danny, I'll drive as slow as you want, and you can stop me whenever you want, it'll pass, don't worry, I got you."
Danny nodded, "Okay… just… just drive."
Steve then turned the car on, and slowly started driving. Instead of taking 15 minutes, the car ride back to Steve's house took 30 minutes, but it was for Danny's sake. Throughout the whole ride, Danny barely said a word, he was holding onto the handle and barely moving.
When they pulled up in Steve's driveway, Danny finally relaxed and felt better. "Uh, Steve, I'm.. I'm sorry.. about.. you know, what just happened" said Danny.
"There's nothing to be sorry about, Danno, nothing, it's okay. C'mon let's go inside" declared Steve. Danny then slowly got out of the car, and him and Steve made their way to the house. But, Danny wasn't aware of the surprise awaiting him inside.
As Steve opened the front door of the house, Danny got in, and was introduced to the sound of at least 6 people saying something altogether. "Surprise!"
Danny was indeed surprised. Chin, Kono, Grace, Max, Kamekona, Catherine and Duke were all there. Danny was smiling and very happy. He then turned his attention to his partner. "You knew about this?"
Steve grinned. "Yeah, you can say that."
Danny nodded. "Wow, thanks guys, really, I love you all so much" he said, happily. He then shared hugs and greetings with all of them. Grace was the happiest out of all of them, and Danny was so happy to see her.
"I missed you, Danno" said the young girl, after they pulled away from the hug.
"I missed you too, monkey" answered Danny, kissing her on the cheek.
Danny had promised Grace that as soon as he gets out of the hospital, he'd take her to the movies, just like planned before the accident, and Grace was very content. She had one condition, and that was to bring Steve with them, and Danny agreed.
Steve then made his way to Danny. He tapped his shoulder, which caused him to turn around. "It's good to have you back, partner" said Steve.
The word 'partner' hit Danny hard. Just last week, he was about to leave Five-0, but now he's actually still working with them. Yes, there were some changes, but Steve and Danny were and will always be partners. Danny truly appreciated that. "Thanks, buddy."
Steve then pulled Danny in a tight hug. He was so happy to have his brother back. After that, the ohana spent time altogether, eating, talking and having some fun. Danny was enjoying every single second of it.
H50 H50 H50
It was around 5:30 PM when everyone had left Steve's place. Grace and Danny were the only ones left. Chin had passed by Danny's house and packed him a bag before the surprise, because the team decided that it would be better if Danny stayed with Steve for a couple of days.
Grace then made her way to her father. "Danno, can we go to the movies now? I'm bored" said Grace. She was excited to go out with her dad and Steve. It was supposed to happen three weeks ago after all.
"Of course monkey, uncle Steve just has to finish the dishes and we'll be out of here in no time" responded Danny, with a cute smile.
Just then, Steve exited the kitchen and as he made his way to the living room, he saw Grace and Danny cuddling, which made him smile. Their bond was one of a kind.
"Hey Gracie, I'm done. How about we go to the movies, what do you say?" stated Steve, with a grin.
"I'd love to, uncle Steve!" exclaimed Grace.
"Alright then, let's go" said Danny. He was beginning to feel tired, but he wouldn't want to ruin the promised plan, and he sure as hell didn't want to ruin this moment of happiness.
Steve then picked up the keys of the car, and looked at Danny. "Buddy, you sure you're up to this? If you want, we can leave it for tomorrow" said Steve.
"Listen, I'm fine. I need to start getting used to this lifestyle Steve. I'm gonna face my problems and my fears, and I won't back down and give up. This thing is now part of my daily life, and I got no choice. Just don't drive like an animal, that's all I want" shot back Danny.
Steve smirked at that last sentence, "Of course, Danno."
"Danno, uncle Steve, let's go!" screamed Grace from the outside. She was starting to get impatient.
Steve and Danny then exited the house, and made their way to Grace, who was very excited to finally go out with her dad and her uncle.
It's true that Danny now will have to go through major changes in his life, but what mattered the most is that despite everything, he still had a job and he still had a family, and he wouldn't trade these two things for anything, and that made him happy. He had a long road ahead of him, but he won't give up, and right now, he had everything he wanted.
