Chapter 1
We had love now it don't matter
-Used to be by Jonas Brothers
AN: Beca is going to be a bitter bitch for the first few chapters but she has her reasons.
"Ow, Stacie, stop kicking me, Jesus Christ." Beca curses as she gets out of her bed. Beca stumbles over her blanket, she falls on her face. "Jerk."she mumbles as she scoops her blanket up.
"Bitch." Stacie mumbles.
It's 6 o'clock on Monday morning and it seems like every morning around this time Stacie kicks her out of their bed so she can have it to herself because they don't need to get up for another hour but since this was Chloe's first day back to school, Beca was too nervous to sleep at all last night.
She kept worrying about how it was going to go. She kept worrying about how she was going to react to seeing her ex for the first time since the break up. She kept worrying about what other people would say to Chloe. She kept worrying if she was going to half to punch a bitch today for making an inappropriate comment towards Chloe. She kept worrying if she was going to be the bitch who was going to be horrible to Chloe.
She just knew she was going to screw this up somehow.
Heading downstairs to the diner, Beca gives her mother a kiss on the cheek as she sips her coffee and reads a book. Beca goes to pour herself a cup of coffee and grabs a muffin from the muffin tray.
"You should eat some real food." Isabell tells her daughter. "You're tiny enough as it is, I don't need strangers wondering if I feed you enough."
"I get that from you." Beca says.
"Smart ass." Isabell says as she closes her book "What are you doing up so early?"
"Stacie kicked me out of our bed again," Beca sighed. "I don't understand why I can't get my own bed,"
"Honey. We've talked about this we're tight. I know it's tough, but you're going to half to share." Isabell says.
"But she keeps kicking me in her sleep. I swear she does it on purpose." Beca says
"No offense, but, it's kind of hard to feel sorry for you when I carried her for nine months and all she did was kick my gull bladder repeatedly…"Isabell says "There's a reason why she's the Varsity Soccer Team Captain."
"Can I at least get a job so I can buy my own mattress." Beca asks.
"You could always work here." Isabell says. Beca frowns. As much as she appreciates everything that Luke has done for them, there was no way in hell she would work here with her sister or her Uncle. A girl needs a damn break once in awhile. "I was actually thinking of working at the bookstore with Jesse and Benji. I get a discount if I work there."
"Do family members get discounts?" Isabell asked
With her bipolar disorder, Beca often struggled with staying focus, but, after the break up she had turned to reading as a source of much needed comfort and distraction. It was the one thing she could bond with her mother over since they were both avid readers.
"Yeah, I think so" Beca says.
"I'll think about it okay," Isabell says.
"Okay." Beca says. "I'm going to go upstairs and get ready"
When she walks upstairs, she almost trips over one of Emily's volleyballs "Seriously, I swear they're trying to kill me."
"Welcome to my world." Luke says as he looks up from his newspaper. "When I invited Iz to stay with me, I thought she meant for a few days, maybe a few weeks at the most. Not two years."
After she was kicked out for being gay, her mother practically begged her estranged brother to take Beca in. After some thought, her Uncle begrudgingly took her in. What neither of them planned was her mother moving in with her two sisters a few weeks later. From what she had her from both her sisters re-tellings, Stacie said there was a huge blow up between her mother and father that lead to them leaving. Her mother had filed for divorce about a month later.
It was an adjustment period to say the least. But Beca wouldn't change any of it.
"You love us and you know it." Beca teases.
Luke hands Beca some coffee. "Your mom told me that Chloe was back….I know things didn't end well between you guys….how are you holding up?"
"I don't know" Beca finally admits. "I don't want to screw this up. But I know inevitably that I will because it's me and that's all I do. I don't want to be an ass to her, but I also just can't pretend everything is fine between us because what she did was really fucking shitty, but, it's also like I know it's not her fault, and I feel like an asshole whenever I get mad at her."
Over the past two years, she's thought of everything she would say to Chloe when she would face her again. Obviously. She knew it would come eventually but she just didn't know it would be today.
With her disorder, there's no telling how she'll react when she comes face to face with Chloe for the first time. She knows it's not an excuse to be a dickhead, but, some things are just out of her control when it comes to Chloe.
Luke looks at her with a hint of confusion. "Just give her a chance."
"Really," Beca asks. "That's the best you can do? 'Give her a chance' "
"What more do you want me to say?" Luke asks "I haven't had a girlfriend since I was fifteen."
Beca rolls her eyes. "I'm going to go get ready for school. I really enjoy our talks, Luke." She says as she pats his shoulder.
Walking into their bedroom, Beca grabs one of her sister's soccer balls and bounces it on her face. "Ow." Stacie says as she jumps up. "Asshole."
"That's what you get for literally kicking me out of bed this morning." Beca replies as she jumps on her sister and begins to tickle her.
"Mom! Beca's being mean to me!" Stacie says as she attempts to fight her sister off.
"Beca! Leave your sister alone!" Isabell shouts.
"Tattle tale." Beca says as she smacks her pillow in her face. Stacie pushes her off.
Beca's relationships with her both her sisters is a little hard to explain. There are days where Beca would do anything for them, and there where days where Beca wants to kill them.
Most days, Beca just thinks they're both better off without her.
Stacie is the Varsity Girls Soccer Captain, she has straight As and worked at Luke's to save for college while. Emily is working her way up to becoming the Junior Varsity captain of the Volleyball team. Emily was in multiple clubs and everyone adored her.
Ever since Chloe left, people have treated Beca like she was a ticking time bomb just waiting to go off. She doesn't remember a day where she wasn't in detention and even though she was the Varsity La Crosse Co Captain as a Junior, Aubrey took over the team and barely lets Beca have her say. Beca hates it, but, she stays because it's the only thing that makes her feel normal anymore even though half the team treats her like she's a fucking leper.
But, Stacie and Emily always stand up for her whenever she needs them too. She's really not sure why because she knows she doesn't deserve it.
"Can you help me with my outfit."
"Trying to impress the ex I see." Stacie says.
"No….I'm just-" Beca attempts to look for an excuse. "Sometimes a girl wants to look nice for once."
"Yeah, right." Stacie says with a laugh as she sits up to help Beca. She looks through her side of the closet. "You really have no taste in fashion. It's like the 80s died in your closet."
"Blame mom for that."Beca says "We're literally the same size, I end up with half her concert shirts."
While Stacie and Emily received their height from their father, Beca received her mother's height.
Stacie picks out a pair of plaid red pants, and an old Metallica T-shirt which Beca is 98% sure she was conceived in. "It says yes, I'm gay, but, it also says I'm completely over you even though I still secretly have feelings."
"I don't even think I know one Metallica song."Beca says with an eye roll as she begins to change.
"Never let mom know that."Stacie says
"Of course not, I don't have a death wish." Beca says
Humming along to the new The Weeknd album as she was getting ready for school, Chloe jumps when she hears her mother knock on the door "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to scare you" her mother, Jennifer, says
"It's fine…...shouldn't you be at work right now?"
"Perks of being a sheriff, I can do whatever I want," Jennifer says "I wanted to see you off for your first day back to school."
Chloe could tell that she was nervous. Her mom didn't often show it, but, Chloe could always tell. "Mom. I'm going to be fine."
"I know, but, you've mad a lot of improvements over the last two years and I know how terrible kids can be today. I don't want it to be too soon."
"Mom. I'll be fine…..just trust me." Chloe says. "I've been in and out of rehab for two years. I've fallen behind enough as it is, I know you're worried, but, I got this."
"I know." Jennifer says. She gives her daughter a hug. "I just like to worry."
'I know, but, I also need to be normal again. Interact with people my age instead of interacting with doctors and nurses."
Remember the book, It's kind of a funny story, well mix it with Perks of Being a Wallflower and a little bit of All the Bright Places and it's officially Chloe's life for the last two years. Between rehab, therapy, defense classes and a summer at her grandparents house in Oregon, Chloe has had enough of people trying to fix her.
There was nothing to be fixed. She had to accept that she was broken.
But, she had to at least try to be normal for her parents sakes. They had sacrificed so much for her over the past two years, she had to at least try to be normal.
Which meant going to school and facing her old friends.
After she left, Chloe had tried to keep in contact with a few of her friends, but the anxiety and the guilt became too much for her so she slowly stopped messaging with Stacie and Aubrey.
She felt guilty about it, but, she had to cut all of her contact to her former school in an attempt to move on. Stacie still checked in on her from time to time and Chloe would attempt to be friendly to her, but, the ping was always there.
It's why she was so surprised when Stacie had volunteered to show her around school. She had wanted to use it as an opportunity to make up with Stacie and Aubrey.
Beca on the other hand…
She hadn't talked to her ex since they broke up. She wasn't sure how Beca would react to her return. She's pretty sure Jesse had squealed to Beca that she returned after she had run into him at the bookstore. If Jesse hadn't told her, Stacie probably did.
If she was nervous to face anyone, it'd be Beca.
She had always regretted the way things ended between them.
15 years of friendship and 2 years of dating thrown down the drain over a wimpy little text.
She honestly deserved any ire that Beca threw at her.
Almost as if she was reading her mind, Jennifer runs her hands through her daughter's hair like she used to do after she had woken up from a nightmare. "Are you worried about Beca?" She asked
"A little….is it dumb…."
"She's like 5 foot 2, I'm pretty sure you could kick her ass if you needed to." Jennifer says
"Mom." Chloe groaned.
"I'm just saying….if that little hobbit tries anything…..we didn't pay for self defense classes for nothing." Jennifer says. "I'm sorry, I just don't understand the girl on girl thing yet, it's so confusing…."
Chloe rolls her eyes.
Chloe loved her mother but she was wired differently when it came to the typical mother daughter things. Jennifer had always been much closer to her brother, Chicago, since they had a lot more in common due to their military backgrounds and love for Fox News, Chloe often found herself turning for her dad for advice on relationships(even though he wasn't much better) however there are just things that Chloe can't slash won't talk to her dad about.
She knew her mom was busy being the sheriff and she understood that but it would be nice to do normal things with her mom that didn't involve guns or self defense classes.
Sometimes Chloe felt guilty for wanting more from her mother considering everything she's done to make sure Chloe had everything she needed after the incident. But, it seems like all her mother wanted to do was just send her to therapy so other's could deal with her problems when all she really wanted was her mom and dad to tell her it was going to be okay.
"Mom. We talked about this. I'm still the same person. But, I like both" She explains.
Hearing a car horn, Chloe exhales. Okay, she was a lot more nervous then she should be. "How do I look," She asks her mother.
Chloe had decided to wear skinny jeans, an old black Army T-shirt that her brother had left behind when he had been visiting overseas and her old soccer jacket. "You look beautiful Chloe."
"Thank you, mom," Chloe says before she leaves she gives her mom a kiss on the cheek and walks out the door.
AN; This is a longer introduction. I wanted to introduce Beca and Chloe's lives post break up, and why they broke up. Also Luke is the Luke from the movies but I'm basing him more off of Luke from Gilmore Girls.
Chloe's first day of school is next.
