Chapter 10
Eren sighed through his nose as he waited in the hard plastic chair, looking at the people as they went from place to place, nurses rushing to their destinations and doctors walking together exchanging information, some of them rushing to their patients and some were reading the files in their hands without a care in the world, that made Eren turn his head away, waiting for his name to be called. Today he is supposed to meet both Erwin and Levi for some fancy cake tasting shit of some sort, which to be said Eren was not all that happy about but what can he do? He is the honorary 'Best Man' since two days ago, and it was funny him knowing that he was sick with Hanahaki the same day.
Booking an appointment in the hospital without anyone knowing was a little hard, but not as hard as it can be while going with the name Eren Kruger, using his mother's maiden name before she changed it before his birth, no one knows about that name, so Eren was sure he was safe from any noisy family members, even his uncle who works in the hospital, he just has to finish his appointment earlier and go to meet Levi and his bushy brows, fiancé.
"Eren Kruger!" The sound of his name being called by one of the nurses made Eren stand up and walk toward her getting a nod in return. "Please wait here, Mr. Kruger, Dr. Yeager will be with you shortly." The nurse said as she left Eren in the room, unaware of the deep and shocking breath the young man took, as he heard that name, Eren swallow and clenched his fists tightly as he watched the door like a hawk, he always wondered what will take a place if he ever met his scumbag of a father, and it will be really funny if he met him like this… no, Eren will never meet him like this, not when he was at death's door.
Eren rushed to the door, intending to leave, hoping that he will make a run for it before he met Grisha and bash his head into the wall, but unfortunately for him, the door was open, which made Eren stumble a few steps back and look at the woman in front of him with shock. "My, my, trying to run already? I promise I wouldn't do anything uncomfortable." The woman said jokingly as she leads Eren gently toward the chair in front of her desk, the young man too shocked to do anything other than take in the woman's long black hair, pale skin, and green eyes, the gentle smile on her face made Eren uncomfortable, considering that this woman who was maybe in her mid-thirties was his supposed step-mother. "My name is Dr. Faye Yeager, what about you?" The woman said trying to be friendly which only caused Eren's nerves to fry more than they were already.
"Eren… Kruger." Eren said after closing and opening his mouth, trying to gain control over his body, swallowing after he said his name, and Eren had to blink because he obviously imagines the shock he saw on the woman's face when he said those words, Eren really wanted to run away from here, but Saint Sina's hospital was the only hospital in Eldia that specialize in Hanahaki's disease and treatment.
"Ok, Mr. Kruger… so what can I help you with?" The woman said as she stood near Eren, and the young man didn't know if she wanted to go behind her desk or come to him but was confused so she stayed where she was, all in all, the woman was weird, Hanji's kind of weird that made him relax a little and look at the woman hoping that she wasn't a murdering psycho.
"… Hanahaki…" Eren said after a while of silence which made the woman take a deep breath at that and look at him for a long time before going to her desk.
"How long did you have the symptoms?" The woman said professionally which made Eren relax at that and turn all of his attention to the woman that was writing something.
"Two days ago, I start coughing petals." Eren said which made the woman look at him with a confused look on her face, then start mouthing something to herself which made Eren a little bit confused.
"You said you start coughing petals two days ago, did you have difficulty in breathing three months period, dizziness, nausea, heart pains, joint aches, headaches, any other symptoms?" Dr. Yeager asked which Eren shook his head at that.
"No nothing, just start coughing two days ago, no period symptoms to the coughing." Eren starts getting a little fidgety after he saw the woman stop writing and looking at him for a long time before swallowing and looking at her notes, which made the young man trying hard to sit still in his chair.
"Did anyone in your family fell sick with Hanahaki?" The woman ends up saying after a while of silence which made Eren look at his hands before returning his gaze to the doctor.
"My mother, was sick with Hanahaki, died because of the disease when I was ten, there weren't any available cure for it back then." Eren ends up saying, getting a nod from the woman as she wrote something in her notebook? Before she stood up and went to Eren and asks of him to open his shirt a little before putting her stethoscope on his chest.
"Breath in… break out…" The woman repeated her request, frowning a little, they spent a little while like this, with the doctor checking his breathing or trying to find any other addition pain he was feeling, all the while Eren was stiff in his chair, trying not to look at the time after the woman was done she returned to her chair and wrote something, which kind of made Eren anxious because that's all the woman ever did since they arrived here. "After doing a primary check, I can safely say you are in stage three of the disease, which is concerning how you went to stage three, without going through stage four, I want you to come next week for more tastes Mr. Kruger." The woman said which made Eren nod his head as he took the prescription from the woman and read through them, nodding his head when he realizes he knew some of the medicine she was talking about.
"What about the treatment, how can I get rid of the disease?" Eren end up asking in the end which made the woman bite her lower lip while furrowing her eyebrows like she was trying to find a way to tell him some God awful news.
"To say the truth, Mr. Kruger, right now, there is no medicine out there to treat Hanahaki disease, but there is a surgery, that can help getting rid of the disease." The woman said after a while of silence which made a shiver run down Eren's spine because he knows there is a 'But' in the subject.
"What's the catch?" Eren breathed after getting the courage to do so, the woman paused at that as if trying to weigh his words before opening and closing her mouths.
"The surgery will automatically take away your… your feeling of love. And as a consequence, you might not be able to express love again. The surgery might also remove your feelings making you unable to love the person who caused the diseased again, in some cases, it removed the memories of the person you loved, and everyone related to them, or you have met through them." The woman said which made Eren bite the inside of his cheek before standing up.
"I will come next week." Was the only thing Eren could say before he left the doctor sitting in her chair looking at his back with pain in her eyes, as for Eren, he could only couch himself through breathing, or he will end up having a panic attack while he was in the hospital…
It seems like he has a big decision to make…
Arriving at the place that Levi and Erwin wanted to do the cake tasting it was a disaster, for one, it seemed that it took a long time for Eren to reach the place, because it was far from the hospital and he was still too emotional to taste cakes and spent the time looking at Erwin's face when he wants to punch him, for another, when Eren reached the right place (Thank God for small miracles) apparently only Levi was waiting for him, because surprise, surprise (Not really) Erwin couldn't come because he was busy (Eren going to call bullshit on that) so now Eren and Levi were left to do the cake tasting alone, which Eren wasn't complaining about, but he did narrow his eyes when he saw Levi limping to the shop.
"Are you OK? What happened?" Eren asked Levi as he walked with the short man keeping a close eye on the man, and tensing a little when he caught the older man flinch at his question.
"N-nothing wrong just hit the table on my way out, you know how much of a disaster I can be when I am in rush." Levi said which made Eren pause at that and try to go over the words, in his mind, following Levi and their hostess to their table.
"Oh God, this is delicious!" Levi said after an hour of cake tasting, they were on their fifth? Or was it fifteen pieces of cake? Eren forgot but he had to say, Levi was right on this one, the Red Velvet cake was the best one the two of them tasted! "What do you think Eren?" Levi said through a mouthful which made Eren roll his eyes with a small smile at the man's crestfallen expression when he notices that he already finished his cake.
"It's the best one we tasted; I wouldn't mind eating another piece of it." Eren said as he gave the rest of his cake to Levi which made the man grin happily and start attacking the cake with his fork, it seemed like Levi's monstrous sweet tooth didn't change at all when he was in America. Which Eren if he was honest to himself, he was grateful for this chance to relax a little after what he heard a little while ago in the hospital.
"Yeah, I wish I can choose it." Levi murmured to himself which made Eren furrow his brows at that. "Ma'am, we are going to go with the traditional wedding cake if you don't mind." Eren's jaw fell a little at that because if one thing was known, it was that Levi hates traditional cakes, always complaining about them tasting like a wet tissue with some sugar on it.
"Levi what the actual fuck! You hate traditional cakes, you said it yourself, and you loved this cake so why?" Eren asked as he turned to Levi when the hostess left them alone for a few minutes to decide, Eren's quiet outburst made the smaller man roll his eyes gently which made Eren narrow his eyes at that.
"Calm down Eren, it's just a cake, besides it's not like I can't buy another cake like this, Erwin said it's best if we choose a traditional wedding, with his father fussing about everything we do, or don't do." Levi said which made Eren bite his tongue to not let Levi know what he thinks of Erwin and his father's choices, which if it was up to him he will thrust their dull and high standers up their asses.
"I am going to the bathroom." Eren grumbled before he stood up and left Eren, trying to calm himself down a little not knowing why he was going emotional over a cake, wondering why Erwin had to be mention to destroy what little blessing he was able to collect today, Eren paused as he saw the hostess taking with the cook and a dark smirk took over his face. "Excuse me, Ma'am." Eren called out which made the woman turn to Eren with a small smile. "If I may make a request, me and my friend decided that we want a lot of nuts, in the cake, in fact, we want it to be filling with it if you don't mind." Eren said with a charming smile, which made the woman flush a little at that.
"No, not at all, table 16, right?" The woman asked which Eren nodded his head with a small smile, getting one in return from the woman. "It's done, Sir, a traditional with a lot of nuts." Eren thanked the woman for that and return to his seat with a dark smirk, ignoring Levi's questioning looks, that he throws every once in a while... if Erwin was allergic to nuts?
Levi doesn't need to know about that…
Short chapter I know.
Busy all this week, and lack the inspiration.
But anyway, life goes on, I will update a long chapter next time.
