Chapter 2: Wasn't an Easy Job
"You know it took me a while to make this decision." Walt told Cady as she positioned one of her campaign signs on the road beside the highway. Cady gentled tapped the top if the sign with a hammer as it slowly worked its way into the dirt. She looked up from her work for just a moment to ask." What do you mean dad?" Walt looked off into the countryside and said." Picking you to replace me. It wasn't an easy job to do."
Now Walt had Cady's interest. "Why you say that dad?" Cady said as she stood up and looked at him." Well, I wanted to make the right decision. And I was scared I was going to make the wrong decision." Cady smiled and replied." Dad I will try my best to be the best decision you ever made in your life." Walt smiled at her and said." I know you will punk, that's why I picked you." Cady laughed and embraced her dad in a hug.

Walt stood in his shower feeling the warm water drip down his body. He looked up at the ceiling and took a deep breath of the air that was engulfed in steam. Walt slowly turned the nozzle to the left and the water turned off as he felt the cold air start to overcome him.
Walt stepped out of the shower to quickly grab a towel and dry himself before he stepped out of the bathroom and into his bedroom. He quickly dressed himself into his black suit. It was the same suit he wore while he was in court. It was also the same suit he was wearing the day that Chance Gilbert escaped from prison.
Walt looked up at himself in the mirror he had in the corner of his bedroom. He slowly buttoned up his white undershirt as he felt a presence behind him. He looked in the mirror to see Vic coming up behind him.
Vic took her arms and wrapped them around Walt's torso. She leaned up and gently kissed the back of his neck." I made coffee. I have you a cup sitting on your dinner table when you're ready." Walt looked at her in the mirror and said," thanks."
Vic knew Walt was not himself, so she had to say." Walt, I'm sorry." Walt just looked at her in the mirror and said." It's okay Vic, really." Vic unwrapped her arms from around and walked in front of him to face him.
"No Walt it's not okay. I should've, I should've been there." Walt could see tears starting to form in Vic's eyes." Vic honey, you don't have to apologize to me. What happened was not your fault."

Walt pulled up to see smoke. There had been a fire, but it had died down. He looked out the window to see what was causing the fire and what he saw made his jaw drop.
Walt jumped out of his Bronco and ran to the side of the highway. There was Cady's patrol car flipped over, destroyed, and on fire."
Walt was suddenly tackled from the side by Mathias. "Walt it's too dangerous for you man!" Mathias yelled at Walt. Walt replied by leaning up and punching Mathias in the face.
Mathias leaned back over to get face to face with Walt's. Mathias did not get angry he just simply continued to calm Walt down. Mathias could feel blood drip from his nose as he picked the retired sheriff from the ground.
"Walt, I can't let you go over there it's too dangerous." Walt spat at the ground and yelled." Mathias where's Cady?" Mathias replied by saying nothing. He simply just looked at the ground and spat blood on the ground. Then Walt saw something he never thought he would ever see. He saw Mathias wipe a tear away from his eye.

Walt stared at the ground with a blank expression on his face. He was too deep in his thoughts. The preacher spoke but Walt could not hear him.
Vic hung on to Walt's right arm as she also stared at the ground. Around them was Ferg, Ruby, Mathias, and Henry. Zach, however, was not in attendance.
Walt swore to himself he would never let this day happen. Walt swore to himself He would never see the day that his sweet daughter. His powerful and smart daughter Cady would never die in a situation like this. In a situation where Walt wouldn't be there to save her. But it happened. It was real. And Walt was still having trouble grasping a hold of that.
Author's Note: First off I wanna apologize for these really short chapters to start this story off. I've been extremely busy lately but I promise as soon as I get more time and more into the story the longer the chapters will get. However, thank you for the support so far. It means a lot to me!
