Chapter One:
Bella stood in front of the kitchen sink watching the water spill over the sides of the sink and onto the hardwood floor. She was in a daze. Shaking her head, she forced herself to pull herself out of her dark thoughts and get back to reality.
"Shit." She cried out as she turns off the faucet and quickly reaches out to the drawer that contains the kitchen towels. Reaching into the sink she unplugged the water, letting it drain into the pipes while she bent down and began soaking up the water that was soaking into the wood flooring.
The sound of footsteps entering the room filled the once quiet room.
"Ummm...Bella, what happened?" Her father frowned at the mess she had created.
"Sorry. I just...you know me. Lost in thought." Bella muttered half-heartedly while forcing a tight smile to appear on her pale face.
"I thought perhaps you found a new way to mop up the floor." Charlie chuckled and took a big gulp of his beer.
"If I had let it continue I would have ended up mopping the whole floor." Bella sighed heavily but continue to present him with a fake smile.
She didn't want him to worry about her. She knew he was concern about her well being since she moved in with him. She often kept to herself and he had pointed out that although it made his task of raising a teenage daughter easy it was still a bit odd. He wanted her to get out and make some friends. She tried and found that she really didn't have much in common with the kids at school, however, when it came to Jacob Black she was strangely drawn to him. However, Jacob didn't go to their school he lived at LaPush, an Indian reservation. She only knew him because her father, Charlie Swan and his father Billy Black were close friends. In fact, her father even bought her first vehicle from Billy. The father-son duo fixed up an old truck and Charlie offered to buy it from them. When they brought it to the house she was introduced to both of them. Despite the stories Billy and Charlie swore were true, Bella didn't recall her early childhood memories of meeting Jacob and his sisters before her parents divorced and her mother moved them away.
It was obvious right away that Jacob and Bella were complete opposites. Bella felt and acted all awkward when he was near her but Jacob acted as if the two of them had been friends, forever. Jacob was a great guy. He was a year younger than herself and taller than her. Although his skin was dark from his Indian heritage his soul was bright as the sun. He was always smiling and seem as if he was filled with never-ending joy.
She didn't know how he did it but he managed to make her smile and laugh even when it was due to something lame or stupid. She liked him. He was sweet. Yet there were moments recently that made her wonder if he was hiding another side of his personality from her and the rest of the world. She caught a glimpse or two of him frowning or deep in thought when she snuck up on him which was really hard to do. The boy had an impeccable sense of hearing.
"It's a sunny day, today," Charlie commented as he threw away his empty can and lean up against the counter and watch as she finishes her task.
"Oh." Bella frown at him. Wondering why he was pointing out the weather when it was obvious even to her that the sun was out today.
"Yeah. I thought maybe you should go for a walk or call one of your friends up and go hang out at the park or where ever you kids hang out on a beautiful day like today." Charlie suggested.
Bella threw the wet towels into the washer and return to the kitchen, shoving her restless hands into the back pockets of her old but comfortable jeans. She stares at her father while trying to read his mind. He was peculiar at times but she loved that about him.
"Dad...I don't know how to tell you this but I don't really have friends who want to hang with me." Bella chews on the corner of her lip, her normal pale chinks were turning pink with embarrassment as she confessed her lack of popularity since she arrived.
"What about Angela? I know you two have spent some time at the library. You know...studying and that stuff." Charlie hated having this conversation but he knew his ex-wife was concern with the lack of people in Bella's life since she moved in. She was pleased that the father/daughter duo was close but Renee felt it was important that Bella hung out with kids her own age. He knew she was right but discussing it with Bella was awkward. He wasn't comfortable or confident with the correct words he needed to use to help Bella understand that her seclusion was not healthy.
"She had plans with her family. Mike and Jessica left early this morning to go on some sort of hiking trip. So that sums up the only few people who notice my existence at school." Bella explain.
Her soft brown eyes darted down at the floor as her cheeks continue to turn a dark shade of red.
"OH." Charlie pressed his lips together and knew he had no choice but to bring up the last person in the world he should encourage his daughter to hang out with. Jacob Black. The boy was great and all but Charlie knew the teenage boy was horny as hell and every time he was near Bella his eyes smolder with lust at his innocent daughter. He knew Bella wasn't sexually active but he feared that Jacob might be the one guy in this area who could get underneath her skin. The boy was a charmer.
"What about Jacob?" Charlie gulp as he forces the name out of his mouth.
"Jacob? I don't know what his plans are today?" Bella found herself smiling softly as she wonders what sort of mischief her friend might be up to. Of course, he probably had his two best friends along with him. The three stooges were pretty much tied at the hip most days. Embry and Quil were often a bad influence on Jacob or at least from Jacob's version when he shared some stories of their childhood pranks.
"Come on, get in the truck. We can drive out there. I need to get out of the house myself. I'm sure Billy would enjoy my company." Charlie replied with a smirk.
"I'm sure he will. Give me ten minutes to change my clothes." Bella looks down at her damp jeans.
"Awesome," Charlie answers as he watches her leave the room with a hop in her step. He was glad she was happier than he found her a few minutes ago. He hopes that Jacob Black stays in the friend zone because he would hate to have to point his gun at the son of his best friend.
Grabbing his keys and a six-pack of beer from the fridge he gets in his pickup and awaits for his teenage daughter to join him.
Three teenage boys appear from the shop as they drive up. Bella's smile grows bigger as the pit of her stomach suddenly fills funny. Her heart was beating fast. She looks down at her hands and noted they were shaking a bit. She wonders why is she feeling so anxious? It wasn't like she had a crush on any of these guys or that any of the boys would be interested in her pale skinny self. Still, she told herself to put on her best smile and present herself as a confident young woman even if her legs felt like jello as she walks across the yard in their direction.
"Don't let them talk you into anything." Charlie called out to her as he watches her march over to the trio of teenage boys, who were all wearing identical devious smiles on their young faces.
"Okay." Bella called back while her heart raced madly.
"Hey Bells." Jacob throws his large muscular arms around her and gives her a swift hug.
For just a moment Bella felt as if the sun had wrapped its arms around her. She felt warm and tingly all over.
"Hey Bella." The other two kept their distance but smiled wholeheartedly at her.
"Hey guys. What are you up to today?" Bella asks curiously.
"Not much. We were working on this piece of crap motorcycle that Jacob got." Quil answers.
Jacob playfully fist punches his friend's arm.
"Whatever dude! You are just jealous." Jacob smirks.
"I didn't know you were into motorcycles?" Bella was surprised to hear that Jacob would want to ride the dangerous device. Her mother warned her that if a guy ever tried to date her and pick her up on a bike she would refuse. Renee didn't like motorcycles or guys that drove them. She swore those boys were risk-takers and that she wouldn't chance her baby girls life with them.
"I'm not exactly. I just saw it and suddenly felt the need to fix it. I might just sell it later for some extra money. I don't know." Jacob shrug his broad shoulders and continue to give her a big goofy smile.
"Cool." Bella smile back.
"How come you guys are here? Dad didn't mention you were coming." Jacob asks curiously.
"Dad wanted to get out of the house. It's too nice of a day to be inside." Bella explains why they intruded on them.
"True." Jacob agrees, taking a deep breath of air before looking over at his two friends who were unusually quiet, even for them.
"Are you guys going to help me or what?" Jacob asks but his eyes give them a clear signal he would like them to leave so he can be alone with Bella.
"I don't know." Embry runs his hand through his hair as he looks between the two of them.
"If I go home my mom might make me clean my room." Quil plays along with Embry as they tease their friend.
"I can help. I mean...if you have a book or something I can read." Bella offers and gives him a sheepish grin.
"I don't have a book but I do have this thing called the internet." Jacob offers as he leads them into the shop. He pulls out his laptop and places it onto a dusty countertop. Putting in his password he turns it around to show her its ready for her use.
Bella walks over to him and stares at the screen and back up at him.
"What?" Jacob asks.
"What kind of motorcycle is it?" Bella frown as she stared at the broken and rusty contraption a few feet from them.
Jacob looks at his friends and then lets a deep laugh that sends the rest of them into laughter as well.
"Okay, guys let's figure out how to fix this thing up." Jacob waves his friends over as the four of them proceeded to try and make something out of the crap he found at the junkyard.
The day went by fast. Bella soon found that working with guys and tools wasn't as bad as she expected. Their foolish behavior was addicting. She couldn't remember the last time she laughed so much and so hard.
The sun was starting to go down when her father arrived and inform them that it was time to go home. Bella found herself deeply sadden. She enjoyed her day at the Black homestead. The guys seem to agree with her mood.
"OH man! Come on Charlie we were going to start up a bonfire in an hour. Bella would enjoy it." Embry announced.
"I'm tired." Charlie stated with a stubborn look on his face.
"Go home. We can get her home." Quil offered.
Charlie looks at them and then at Bella. He didn't like the thought of her out here with three teenage boys. Billy was home but he couldn't do much if they decided to take off into the woods. His wheelchair was only accessible in certain areas on the property.
His fatherly instincts scream at him to take Bella home with him but his heart melted as he recognizes the pleading look she was giving him.
"Alright. I want her home by eleven. Not a minute later." Charlie pointed his finger at all three of them while his eyes flash with fire as he hoped to strike fear in each of them.
"Yes sir!" The three of them said in unionism.
"Be safe Bella and don't let them take you into the woods." Charlie warns her as he fought back the urge to kiss his little girl on the cheek. He knew it would only embarrass her.
"I promise." Bella agreed happily.
Charlie reluctantly walks away and hoped like hell that he wouldn't regret allowing her a little more fun with those crazy boys.
The guys form a large bonfire and were seated around it when Bella join them. She went inside to check on Billy and grab them all a soda. She made her way to the spot next to Jacob where he placed a blanket for them. She smiled as she sat down and warm her hands up. The flicker of the flames was mesmerizing.
The sound of Quil's phone interrupted the unexpectedly quiet scene.
"Hello." Quil answer, his face swiftly turns from serene to frustrated.
"Okay. Yes. I promise." Quil hung up the phone and let out a long exhale.
"That's mom. I got to go. Embry your mom wants you home as well." Quil stated.
"Why?" Embry ask giving Quil a suspicious glare.
"Something to do with a pipe that is broken and she needs you to fix it right away." Quil answer.
They both stood up and gave Bella and Jacob an apologetic smile for their sudden departure.
"Sorry guys." Bella wave at them as they reluctantly left the couple alone.
"That sucks. Embry was hoping to scare you." Jacob chuckles as he turns and smiles softly at her.
"Really? What could you guys tell me that would be scary?" Bella rolled her eyes sarcastically.
"Oh and I guess you don't scare easily?" Jacob cock an eye brown as he studied her face.
Bella felt a large lump suddenly form in her throat as his eyes stared deep into hers. She just realized just how close the two of them were sitting next to one another. It occurred to her that they were completely alone next to a cozy fire. The ambiance was somewhat romantic. The stars shined brightly above them and the sounds of insects played in the night air.
"Not really." Bella practically whispers the words. She suddenly felt her chest tightening up and she couldn't breathe as he leans in closer.
Sparks flew between them. Or was that the fire she wondered as he drew closer to her. Their faces were a mere inch apart. His large warm hand covered hers. She swore she could hear her pulse in her ears. At that moment she wasn't sure if she was afraid he might or might not kiss her. It never occurred to her before just how irresistible he was not to mention how beautiful he was inside and out. Sure she was human enough to notice he had a great body frame and wasn't bad on the eyes but never before this second did she desire him in any other capacity than a friend. Just a simple friend, nothing more.
Blinking her eyes she sucks in a small breathe of air and found herself gazing at his lips. Two perfectly full lips that probably kissed a lot of girls. She felt herself feeling insecure and yet jealous simultaneously. Bella knew it was such an immature emotion and one that she had no reason to feel.
"Bella? Are you okay?" Jacob's voice was soft as silk but she heard a hint of laughter in it.
Closing her eyes she fought with the desires that tempted to expose her unexpected feelings for Jacob.
"Of course." Bella snicker. She shook the sexual thoughts from her mind and sat upright, pulling her hand out from Jacobs.
"Are you sure?" Jacob turn his body facing back toward the fire. They both look at the flames that flicker while they hoped the other didn't misread their actions.
"What time is it?" Bella thought out loud.
Jacob checks his phone.
"It's only nine-thirty."
"So what are we going to do for the next hour?" Bella made an attempt at friendly conversation to keep her hormones in check.
"I don't know. We could lay back and count the stars." Jacob suggested.
Bella chuckled. Looking over at him she realized her mistake. He was serious.
"There is no way to count ALL these stars!" She cried out while pointing up at the sky.
"Perhaps not but nothing wrong with trying it. Sometimes the best moments come from taking chances." Jacob advised her with his bask knowledge of sixteen years.
"Such as?" Bella smiled crookedly at him.
Jacob laid back on the blanket, placing his arms crisscrossed behind his head. Bella joins him but cautiously keeps her hands to her sides.
"Well...I...look I just know that if you overthink everything you will live a boring life. That's the advice my sister Rachel told me once." Jacob answers turning his head so he can see her face.
"Isn't she the sister that moved to Texas to be with her boyfriend who is a bull rider?" Bella ask.
Jacob knew it sounded like a lame life but he was jealous of Rachel for leaving this place. It was his job to stay here to help care for his father for the rest of his life. He loved his father with all of his heart but there were moments when he wishes he had the same opportunities that the rest of his friends had.
"Yes. She is also a college student. She is getting an education as well as some life experiences before she settles down." Jacob replies proudly.
"That's cool. I can't imagine going so far away from both of my parents. I've always had one of them in my life." Bella thought out loud.
"But what about when you go to college. You don't plan on taking Charlie or Renee with you, do you?" Jacob teases her.
"No of course not! I guess I forget that one day soon I will be leaving them." Bella found herself a bit sadden at the thought. Most teens dream of the day they gain their freedom from their parents but not her so much. Her parents had always given her enough room to do whatever she wanted. She realized that she was luckier than most.
"It's the normal passage of life. All little birds leave their nest." Jacob sighs softly.
"What about you? Do you plan on leaving all of this behind?" Bella teased.
"No," Jacob said, his voice a tab bit rougher than he had intended.
"Why not?" Bella look over at him with a deep frown.
"My dad needs me." Jacob reminded her that unlike her he only had one parent and that parent had special needs.
"I'm sure your Dad would be able to find help while you were away for a short time." Bella tried to give him hope for his future.
"It's my responsibility." Jacob argued.
"Sorry." Bella knew it was pointless to continue the discussion by the tone in his voice. She knew what stubborn sounded like.
"It's okay." Jacobs's voice was softer than before.
Bella relaxed next to him. She was relieved they had moved on from the touchy subject. However, now she wasn't sure what to say. She struggled not to look at him. She wanted to see if her body would still react so strangely.
Jacob sat up, pulling his knees up against his chest. Bella sat up and crossed her legs while she waited patiently for him to say something. She couldn't explain it but she felt unlike herself tonight. What had changed between them? Nothing. Absolutely nothing. She spent all day with him and not once did her thoughts drift into anything romantic or sexual. Why now? It had to be the environment. Cool night, warm fire, stars above them and an ending to a good day. It made sense when she looked at the situation logically.
"I hope you had a good time today." Jacob broke the silence. His smile was so tender that Bella feared she was about to swoon.
"I did." Bella gulps hard and forced her lips to curl up to create a pleasing smile.
"Maybe we should put this fire out and take you home." Jacob suggested.
Bella frown at the thought of leaving his side.
"Or we could stay longer if you want." Jacob offered when he saw how unhappy she suddenly seem.
He wasn't sure what to say or do with her. He liked her. He liked her a lot but he was so inexperienced with girls. Bella was a year older and he was pretty sure more experienced than he was with relationships. He had only kissed one girl and that went okay. It was a short sweet summer fling when he was thirteen years old. At sixteen he still felt insecure and lack the confidence that most of his friends seem to have around girls.
"No, you're probably right. Don't want to be late. Charlie might not let me come back." Bella stood up.
Jacob did the same. They both reach down to grab the blanket and accidentally bump heads.
"Ow." They giggled at their shared clumsiness.
"I will let you get the blanket while I handle the fire. It might be safer for us both." He laughs, rubbing his head.
While he was putting out the fire he watches her folding the blanket and it suddenly occurred to him that she mentioned that she wanted to return to his house in the future. Was that a sign that she was interested in him as more than friends? Or was it simply just her way of saying she enjoyed their friendship? He wished he understood women better.
They walk inside and let Billy know that Jacob was taking her home. Once in the truck, they turn on the radio and neither really spoke to the other. Jacob wanted so badly to take her hand and pull her closer to him but he knew it was too soon to be that brave. He kept his hands tightly around the steering wheel.
Bella wish she knew what to say or do to see if Jacob might be interested in her. She had never felt like this before. She couldn't put her finger on it but something shifted between them tonight. She felt scared but in a good sort of way.
Pulling up in her driveway, Jacob insisted on walking her to her door. Once they stood at the door he licks his lips, rubbing his hands on the sides of his jeans. Bella wasn't certain but twice now she felt like he might want to kiss her.
"Thank you for taking me home. I had a great time today. Maybe I can come over later this week and we can work on the bike?" Bella ask with a hopeful gleam in her eyes.
"I would love that." Jacob agreed immediately.
"Okay. Bye." Bella turns toward the door when she felt his hand reach for hers. She turns to look up at him.
Jacob's eyes were darker than usual and his chest was heaving as he held her hand tightly.
"I mean it. I would love to spend more time with you." Jacob's voice was rough with desire as his head leans down and very gently he placed his warm lips against hers. It was a simple kiss. Soft and sweet.
Bella felt her heart burst into flames. Her eyes were closed tightly as magical electricity pulsed between their bodies. She felt unusually warm. She could almost swear the heat was coming directly from the nearness of his body.
"Good night." Jacob pressed his lips together, tasting the sweetness of the moment and smiling from ear to ear.
"Night." Bella whisper as she struggled to open the door and stumble into the house. Pressing her back against it, she stood with a smile and fan her face with her hand. She wanted to jump like a giddy teenage girl but she didn't want Charlie to come into the room to check on her. She was positive Charlie would know what had just transpired on his doorstep.
"Charlie I'm home. Going to take a shower." Bella called out as she raced up the stairs.
"K." Charlie grumbled.
Bella grabs her toiletries and jumps in the shower and the whole time all she could think about was how sweet her first kiss was and how she hoped it would always feel this incredible.
Jacob runs to his pickup truck, jumping inside he feels this strange sense of power coursing through his veins. He feels so happy that he fears his head might burst open. His body tingles like he grabbed an electric fence. He couldn't stop smiling.
Pulling into the driveway he suddenly notices that his pure happiness is now starting to fade and in its place he feels a tinge of nausea. His body still feels hot as hell and he notices his body is aching. How could he go from feeling like he was on top of the world to feeling as if he was in the early stages of the flu? Stepping out of the truck he felt his legs growing weak beneath his tall stature and then an eerie sound like a wolf howling could be heard. He covered his ears as the pain intensified. Falling to his knees, he felt sweat rolling all down his body. He tries to call out for help but all he could do was moan as his body began to pull and stretch. He feared he was going to die when he suddenly saw two bare feet in front of him right before he fell to the ground and into a deep painful black void.
"It's your turn brother." Sam Ulley stood over Jacob Black's body as he watches the ancient old ritual take over Jacob's body. He knows all he can do is watch and witness the miracle of magic and guide his younger brother into a new life that will forever change his destiny.
