Chapter 4: Love
Walt woke up in his bed with a huge headache. He rubbed his head gently with his hand and took a deep breath. Walt released the huge breath and leaned over to see Vic still silently asleep by his side. Walt scooted closer to her and wrapped her up in his arms. Walt gently kissed the back of her neck and Vic woke up.
"Morning beautiful." Walt said as she leaned over to kiss him on the lips. Vic released the kiss and sighed." Walt it's 7 in the morning." Walt chuckled." I know." He said and gently kissed her neck. He left a trail of kisses down Vic's neck and started to gently kiss around her collarbone. Vic sighed with pleasure and kissed the top of his head.
Walt suddenly pulled himself up on top of her as he continued to leave kisses on her neck. Then he went back up to kiss her on the lips. Vic started to unbutton the buttons on his shirt he had on. When Walt and Vic had gotten back to the Cabin Walt had taken a shower and put a new shirt on.
Walt suddenly lifted Vic's shirt up over head and he threw it on the floor. Walt leaned down to kiss her again but was stopped by Vic's finger in front of his face." I love you Walt." Walt looked into her eyes and could see that she really did love him. He could tell that Vic loved everything that made him Walt Longmire. And Walt loved Vic for who she was. He loved her for her smile, her bad ass attitude, and he also loved how she cared so much about him and all the other people around her.
"I love you too." Walt said to Vic. Vic smiled but it did not last long as Walt leaned down and kissed her again. Walt reached around him and ran her hand through his hair while he kissed her.
…
One week later
Walt walked up the stairs of the Absaroka county sheriff's department like he had done many other times in his life. Walt was dressed in his normal button up shirt and blue jean combo with his jacket on. He also had his hat on for the first time in about a week.
Walt approached the door of the station and opened it. When he entered inside, he was greeted by the one and only Ruby." Walt!" Ruby exclaimed excitedly. She jumped up to around her desk and give him a large welcoming hug.
"Hey Ruby." Walt said happily. Ruby released Walt from her hug." Walt, I am so sorry to hear about Cady it really tears me up to hear about the news. And I'm so sorry I couldn't make it to her funeral I wanted to be there so bad but- "Walt silently put his hand up making Ruby pause.
"Ruby, it's okay. You can't help you were out of town. Ruby sighed as she went to go back and sit at her desk. She also wiped a tear away from her eye." I know Walter, but I still feel bad about it."
"Well Ruby I assure you there is nothing to worry about now." Ruby wiped another tear from her face and nodded at Walt." Okay Walter."
Walt walked into the main room of his old station. The station still looked about the same. The deer head was still up on the wall. The coffee pot still in its place. The jail cell had not changed one bit. Walt felt like he was at home again, but he also remembered why he was back at the station.
Walt walked down the hallway and back into his old office. He opened the door to see Ferg going through a filing cabinet on the left side of the room. For the main part Walt's office still looked the exact same way it always had. His desk and bookshelf still sat in their same places. His old couch still sat in the same spot he had left it. His gun cabinet still sat in the same exact place it always had. It even still had some of the same rifles that Walt had kept in there.
Cady had taken up using the same rifle that Walt had always carried through all his years of being sheriff. She carried around his old Winchester 30-30 caliber rifle. However, she did not carry around the same sidearm that he had. Walt kept his Colt 1911 45 caliber pistol. Cady had simply just chosen to use a Glock 9 that Vic had given her.
"Walt." Ferg said as Walt entered the room." Ferg, is there something you need to talk to me about. I got your text message." Ferg looked at the ground and said." I was told by the mayor to text you." Walt sat his right had on his hid where his hand lied to rest of his sidearm. Even after being retired Walt still liked to carry his trusty old sidearm along with him.
"Well, what does the mayor want to talk to me about Ferg?" Ferg looked at the ground and said." Well, the mayor called me last night and told me I had been doing a great job filling in while he finds someone to fill in the spot for sheriff."
Walt nodded and said." Ferg what does this have to do with me?" Ferg finally took his eyes off the ground and said." Walt the mayor wants you to be the active running sheriff until the next election."
Walt was shocked by what he just heard. He simply just nodded his head and looked down at the floor of his office. Walt was so shocked, but at the same time for the first time in a week he felt something different in his heart. It wasn't sadness, it wasn't hatred, and it wasn't fear. Walt Longmire felt an adrenaline flow rush to his heart. He felt the need to explore another case filling his heart. Walt now knew what he had been missing for so long. His job was what he had been missing.
…
Walt pulled up in his Bronco to the mayor's office. He got out and started walking up to his doorstep. Walt wanted to talk to the mayor about his old job. Walt knew that this was the best thing for him right now. For two months now he had missed his job some kind of bad. He had lied to Cady when he told her he was ready to leave his job. He knew he still wanted his job.
Walt approached the large building to be greeted by an armed guard who was holding a Remington pump 12 gauge." Hey, I'm Walt Longmire. I need to speak to Sawyer." The guard nodded at Walt and led him inside. He was a Cheyenne man. Big and tough looking. But he was also as nice as could be.
Walt entered the building to walk down a hallway. The hallway was filled with lots of doors that led to several offices.
Walt finally reached the end of the long hallway to find himself in the mayor's office. Walt gently opened the door to be greeted by Sawyer." Walt come in. Can I get you anything? I have coffee." Walt was surprised by Sawyer's happy nature. He had not seen him this joyful in a long time.
"No thanks Sawyer I'm good." The mayor walked around his desk to take a seat behind it. Walt pulled up a chair and sat down in front of his desk. Walt also removed his hat from head and held it in his hand.
"Walt, I'm not here to beat around the bush. I want you back in the sheriff's office for four more years. I want you to be the one to succeed your daughter." Walt looked up at the mayor to speak but Sawyer spoke first." Also, I'm really sorry about your daughter, what happened was terrible and it should have never happened."
"It's okay Sawyer." Walt said in a calm manner." But I need to talk to you too." Sawyer nodded at Walt and said." Go ahead then." Walt sighed and said." Look Sawyer. I know you want me to be the sheriff for four more years and I really want to do it to, but how do I know that there not something in this for you? You've already tried to screw me over once with supporting Tucker Bagget in my civil suit."
The mayors smile quickly faded when Walt said that." Walt, I know we've had a troubled past but, I really want to put all of that behind us. You did this county so much good over the years, and I want you to do it for four more. So, what do you say?"
Walt leaned back in his chair and inhaled and exhaled a huge breath. So many parts of him did not want to believe Sawyer, but at the same time he knew what he needed to do.
Walt leaned up in his chair and looked the mayor right in his eyes." I'll do it Sawyer."
