"It's good to be coming back home after being away like that" Nevaeh smiles at Eureka, who is carrying all the bags. They were kicking up dust with every step; Nevaeh liked the sound of their footsteps on the dry earth.
"Yeah, I can't believe that job took us two months, maybe we're losing our edge?" She replied.
"Nah, we've still got it! But I guess it wouldn't hurt to do some more training between jobs again" Nevaeh's smile wasn't ceasing.
"Hey, uh, I don't suppose there's any chance of you carrying one of these bags?"
"What was it you were saying about needing some more training?"
"Actually you said that and carrying bags isn't training!" The annoyance in her voice was clear.
"They're kind of like training weights though? But fine, pass me one." She extended her hand to Eureka. Eureka put the bag in her hand and due to its weight Nevaeh was pulled to the ground. "Jeez, what is in this thing?"
"All the things you bought from the last town." Eureka's expression went flat.
"Oh... right, yeah. Yeah, okay." She remembered that she did in fact buy lots of clothes and jewellery as well as souvenirs. They were just about coming into the town of Magnolia, home of their guild.
"Can we stop at the cake shop?" Eureka was imagining a huge triple layered cake covered in strawberries.
"I think we should stop by the guild hall first and say hello to everyone, let them know we're back then drop our stuff off at home. After that we can go to the cake shop."
"Yeah, that seems fair. Did you hear about the new girl?"
"Yeah, strange how news travels isn't it. They said her name is Lucy."
"They said she's blonde too..."
"There can be only one!" Nevaeh sensed there would be a rivalry between herself and Lucy, but then again Nevaeh had some kind of rivalry with everyone in Fairy Tail. She coughed. "Anyway, I'd want to say hi to my dad first of all, I'm sure you'd want to say hi to yours too?"
"Yeah, his 'babies' would probably be happy that I'm back too." Eureka started to pick up the pace, then Nevaeh did too. The two of them started to jog a little, but then burst into a full out race to the guild hall.
The two were greeted by the residents of Magnolia with enthusiasm, with numerous people asking how their job went, why it took them so long, will they be staying for a change and all the other usual questions they were given each time they returned. The two of them shouted that they would come back to speak to everyone shortly as they ran through the streets of Magnolia. They were well respected in their town. Upon reaching the guild hall they dropped their bags and rushed over to Master Makarov to ask what had happened. Makarov was also Nevaeh's great grandfather, as Laxus adopted her in X778 aged twelve, likewise Bickslow adopted Eureka, eleven.
"Phantom Lord did a number on our guild hall; we're in the process of rebuilding it bigger and better than before." Makarov informed them. "They were after our newest member, Lucy, it's a long story." He sighed. "You should go introduce yourselves to her.
Satisfied with the response the two of them were about the help out when Laxus' outburst caught their attention. She was outraged at his complete disregard for his fellow guild members but she had known this kind of behaviour was going to peak soon enough by the way he'd been acting in the past. She knew the two sides of him, the one that had taken her in and looked after her, but also the arrogant side who thought he was better than the others.
"Now I know why I looked up to you, Laxus." Tears slowly rolled down Nevaeh's cheeks. "It's because all you do is look down on everyone else." She ran off and Eureka followed. An hour had passed and Nevaeh made the decision to buy her own home, which due to their successes with S-Class quests, resulted in the purchase of a mansion called Kedelia. However they didn't stay long as Nevaeh wanted to take her mind of her father and they took on a quest: search for the sunken treasure. Taking nothing with them they pass through the port town of Hargeon.
"Nevaeh?" Eureka speaks softly.
"Yeah?" Curious as to what Eureka was going to say, Nevaeh doesn't take her eyes off her.
"W-Who is Macbeth?" She could see that she brought up a sore topic. "I'm sorry; it's just that... well you talk in your sleep. I know about the Tower of Heaven but you keep mentioning that name and then you cry."
"Macbeth..." She takes a deep breath and continued "Macbeth is someone I've been looking for ever since the Tower. I made a promise to him that I would find him no matter what. That's why I left you all those years ago. I'm sorry for that."
"That's great and all, but that still doesn't tell me who he is." She pushed for a more satisfying answer. Nevaeh sighed deeply and prepared to tell Eureka about a part of her past she'd never told anyone.
"He's the one who gave me this." She held up her necklace; it was made of black string and had a small wooden heart pendant with an engraved 'M+N'. "It's our initials, he made it for me. He's the one who gave me courage, motivated me to become stronger all these years. He's my... well I suppose he's my... first and only love. When he gave this to me he promised we would be together forever. I know we were young but we liked each other, now that I'm older I realise that those feelings I have for him, its love." She was blushing; her cheeks were nearly as red as her lipstick.
"Even after all these years?" Eureka was surprised.
"Yes, I never forgot, and I hope he hasn't either. I know where he is, the Ghoul Spirit master told me and I never forgot that either, but I need to become stronger or I won't be able to face him."
"I think that as soon as we get back from this quest you should go to him. The longer you leave it the worse it'll get, he could forget by then and also the less chance you'll have to be with him. He could get a girlfriend by then..."
"That's not going to happen!" She growled.
"Okay, okay, chill. But seriously, you should go, I'll even cover for you with master."
"Thanks." Nevaeh's smile returned and they continued on with their quest. A week later they were nearly back in Magnolia, empty handed.
"It was the right thing to do." Eureka was happy and Nevaeh nodded in agreement. They just about reached the top of the hill.
"Why is it that every time we come back, something is going wrong?" Nevaeh's expression was downcast, her eyes closed. Their welcoming committee was Laxus' Thunder Palace. She scowled. "He's gone too far now." They began to run towards the town and caught sight of Freed on the ground ahead of them, with Mirajane sat next to him. "Freed!" Nevaeh shouted out to him. Eureka was stunned silent and fell to her knees.
"Nevaeh, please..." Freed's voice was gravelly. "I'm sorry it went this far, I just... I was following Laxus, but I see this has gotten out of hand. I never wanted to hurt everyone." He covered his face with his hand, trying to hide his crying.
"Don't worry, I understand that, you look up to my father and respect him, as do I. We'll stop this before the whole town gets hurt." Nevaeh wraps her arms round Freed and then sets off to disarm the Thunder Palace. Knowing she won't be able to talk any sense into Laxus she went straight for the lightening lacrima. She jumped onto the roof of a building in the centre of Magnolia and shot five fire bombs at the lacrima, taking out five of the 300 or so lacrima. As she prepared to fire more she was struck by lightning energy. The lacrima had body link magic and with that she was out cold. Eureka arrived shortly after accompanied by Freed, who carried her to the medical room and left her to rest. He then went to confront Laxus.
Sometime later she woke in a daze.
"I wasn't expecting the shock to be that strong, stupid body link magic."
"Yeah, if you'd never learnt lightening dragon magic from Laxus, that could have killed you." Eureka had stayed by Nevaeh's side the whole time. She was very upset to see her best friend in such a state.
"Nevaeh, are you okay?" Luna came into the medical bay, followed by Sol. Luna was Nevaeh's partner, an Exceed, and Sol was Eureka's partner. They hadn't accompanied the girls for the past two quests, due to the danger of the first one and the haste in taking the second one.
"Yeah, I'm okay ha-ha. Don't worry about me." They got her some food to give her a bit of strength and she was soon on her feet.
Nevaeh was informed by Makarov that he had no choice but to kick Laxus out of the guild, to which she was upset but understanding considering his actions. She had faith that she would see him again, he just had some growing up to do, that was all. They left except Luna.
"Nevaeh, I need to talk to you about something..." She was sat on the chair next to Nevaeh's bed. "While you were unconscious... just after the lightening hit you, I saw something happen to you. Your body started glowing... I don't know what it means but I've never seen or heard of anything like it before. That's when I went to get Eureka and the others."
"Glowing... that's happened before. A long time ago I thought I was going to die, but just before I did my entire body started glowing and my wounds started healing."
"We need to find out what it is..." Luna's look was stern, she wanted to know where this strange healing power was coming from and what exactly it meant.
As night fell eureka lay in bed awake, as did Nevaeh. Sol and Luna were fast asleep.
"So..." Eureka began. "Tomorrow." She turned onto her side to face Nevaeh's bed and she was looking out of the window.
"Yes, you understand that I have to do this, this is the only way I can see him again." She was doleful. "He goes by a new name now... Midnight."
