Chapter Three:
Bella sat at the small kitchen table, chewing on her thumbnail and looking at the phone on the wall. She was growing weary of this waiting game. She needed to speak to Jacob. She needed proof that he was alive and well. Standing up, she ran her hand through her hair and let out a long groan as she marches up to the phone. Again, she just gazed at the phone, hoping to somehow mentally manipulate it to ring and miraculously Jacob to be on the other end of the call. Rubbing her temples in a circular motion she focused on trying to find the courage to pick up the phone and call. She knew the odds for Jacob to actually answer it was low but she couldn't give up on him.
Grabbing the phone she quickly dials the familiar number and bit down hard on her lower lip as she listens to the ominous ringing sound.
"Hello." Billy's voice crackled with a hint of annoyance.
"Hi, Billy. It's me, Bella. I was hoping to get an update on Jacob's health." Bella braced herself to hear the same message he gave her for the past eight weeks.
"Jacob's doing well. He's not home at the moment." Billy answered.
Bella felt as if someone had kissed her on the cheek and then slapped her. She was relieved to hear that Jacob was in recovery but not too thrilled to hear he was well enough to leave his house. Why hadn't he called her right away? It was just inconsiderate. Jacob wasn't rude.
"Oh. So he is back to his old self?" Bella chewed on her lower lip, tearing the dry skin as she fought back the tears that were filling up in her eyes.
"One hundred percent." Billy chuckled roughly.
"Do you know when he will be home?" Bella tried to hold back her emotions. Her voice sounded hoarse even to her own ears.
"Not a clue honestly. He and the boys were planning to grab a bite and play video games."
Bella wanted to scream. She could not believe that he had been so thoughtless as to not contact her and let her know he was well and available to visit. Why did it feel as if he didn't care that she even existed?
"Awesome. Umm...Okay. Just let him know I called, please." Bella pleaded.
"I will." Billy replied and hung up immediately afterward.
Bella placed the phone back. Covering her face with both of her hands she struggled with the tornado of emotions that swirled madly in her head and her heart. On one hand, it was good to hear that he was well enough to go hang out with his friends but on the other hand it was an insult to her that he couldn't bother giving her a five-minute conversation out of common courtesy. Weren't they friends? Did he already forget about their kiss? Was he no longer interested in her?
A single tear escapes out of the corner her eye and made a wet trail down the side of her face. Wiping the tear from her face she staggered over to the table and sat back down. A headache was already forming as she tried to process the information Billy happily shared with her.
For weeks she called and she prayed for him to recover. She couldn't wait to see him, to hopefully become more than just friends and now, well, she didn't know what to do next. Should she continue trying to reach out to him or would that make her look like a stalker? The ball was in Jacob's corner now. If he wanted to pursue any kind of relationship with her then it was entirely up to him to reach out to her from this point on. She dreaded the thought of the guys discussing how needy and obsessive she had become about Jacob. No, for her own self-dignity she knew it was best to do nothing furthermore. It suck. It suck big time but it was the only thing she could do now.
Bella walks into school the following day with dark circles under her eyes. She felt like crap. As tired as she was the night before she couldn't manage to get more than three hours of sleep. Her head was filled with so many thoughts and scenarios about what might have possibly put Jacob off by her that she just couldn't sleep. Now, in the daytime, she was suffering from the consequences.
Walking into the cafeteria at lunch she wondered for the first time if they served coffee at this school. She needed something to help keep her going for the next three hours of the school day.
"Hey do we have coffee?" Bella asks as Angela walks up to her with a large salad and half a bowl of soup on her tray.
"Seriously? I wish." Angela giggled.
"Dang. I really need some caffeine." Bella yawn.
"Eat some apples. They say apples have the same effect." Angela suggested.
"I think coffee would be more potent." Bella yawn again.
"Stop it. You are making me tired." Angela walks away and sits at their usual table with Mike, Jessica, and a few others.
Bella looks over at the salad bar and decided eating might be a smart idea. Being tired and hungry would only make the rest of her day worse.
Grabbing a bowl she proceeded to pick out a few of the things she likes and several slices of apples before proceeding to the check outline. She was just about to pay when she heard a slightly familiar voice right next to her ear. Jumping she nearly dropped the tray but luckily for her and Edward he caught it.
"You are jumpy today." Edward announced, his eyes twinkling with mischief.
"Who are you Captain Obvious?" Bella rolled her eyes and gave him a short curt smile.
"Who is that?" Edward frown.
Bella shook her head and took a deep breath, then turn around to pay for her lunch. She started to head toward her friends and their usual table when Edward placed his hand on her arm.
"What?" Bella snapped but then quickly felt like an ass.
"Sorry. I just...what did you need?" Bella tried to put her polite face on despite being annoyed not once but twice now by the guy who had a bad habit of just appearing when she was going through a bad time.
"I thought you might want to join me outside. It's nice today." Edward glance over at the exit door that led to a small batch of tables for when the kids wanted to dine outside.
"Nice? It's fifty-five degrees outside." Bella gazes up at him and wonders if he was perhaps mentally challenged. It would make sense with all those good looks that he would be brainless. There was no such thing as a perfect person.
"Yes but no rain or snow." Edward pointed out the lack of precipitation.
"This is true but still very cold." Bella shivered just thinking of the frigid air.
"Fine. How about we sit over there." He pointed to a table in the very back corner of the cafeteria.
"Why?" Bella questions with a pair of suspicious eyes.
"I thought it might be nice to talk to you." Edward replied with a quick and yet charming smile.
Bella felt little butterflies swirling in her stomach. When he smiled, he was even better looking, if that was even possible. A big part of her wanted to deny his request but then she recalled that he did rescue her and bring her homework to her house so it was best to return the politeness he had shown her.
"Why me?" Bella couldn't stop herself from trying to find out his true motive for talking with her.
"How about this, you sit and ask all the questions you require?" Edward pleaded.
He knew everyone in the room was watching them. He could hear their thoughts about what an odd couple the two of them would make. Other thoughts were just petty and disgusting. He blocks those thoughts and concentrates on Bella. It was weird because unlike everyone else, he could not hear her thoughts. It just now occurred to him that every time they met not once had he caught even a whisper of her inner feelings. She was definitely different from the other students. Alice was right, Bella was unusual but he wasn't detecting anything supernatural about her.
"Sure." Bella caved and followed him to the table.
If she hadn't been so exhausted she would have noticed that everyone was whispering and watching as the couple made their way to a private spot.
Bella picks up her fork and digs into her lunch while Edward watches her eat. Bella gazes over at him and notices he didn't have any food. Why wasn't he eating? Why was he looking at her as if he was studying her?
"Do I have something on my face?" Bella asks as she picks up a napkin and wipes her face with it.
"No." Edward smiles, showing her some teeth.
"Okay. I'm sitting here eating. Apparently alone." Bella gazes at the empty spot on the table where his tray should be if he was eating. "What do you want to talk about?"
" Where are you from? I mean word is that you didn't live here all your life like the rest of these kids." He scans the room and notices everyone trying to pretend that they aren't staring with open curiosity about the two of them.
Bella swallows her food, wiping her mouth and then answers his question.
"I was actually born here but my parents divorced when I was four years old. My mom moved around a bit until recently she and her new husband decided to purchase a home and live in Florida. My stepdad is a baseball player of sorts." Bella explained.
"I decided to move in with my dad so that I could get to know him better before I head off to college and to a life of my own." Bella answered.
"Do you not like your stepdad?"
"What? Sure I do. Why would you think I don't?" Bella gives him a crazy look.
"You have lived with your mother all these years, why now do you desire a relationship with your paternal father?"
"Umm….me and Dad always wrote and called each other. A few times he would travel to visit with me. I just...I thought since my mother was newly married that they deserve some alone time. Plus my Dad has been on his own for so long that I knew he would enjoy my company." Bella answered.
"That's nice."
"Why do you care about my relationship status with my parents?" Bella laughs.
"I don't. I mean I was just curious why someone would willingly move to a place like this?" Edward replied, hoping his answer didn't come off too arrogant. Forks was a small town and it was the perfect place for the survival of his family but he couldn't imagine someone wanting to live there when they had the rest of the world to explore.
"It's not bad. Sure, there isn't a lot to do but everyone seems to keep to themselves and for the most part pretty nice." Bella shrugged her shoulders.
"Do you need privacy? I mean, is that important to your well being?" Edward quizzed hoping to learn what made this girl so different from the rest of the human species in this town. Perhaps she was some sort of supernatural being that they had never come across before.
"My well being?" Bella let out a big laugh. She was still completely oblivious about the amount of attention they were receiving.
"Look Edward I'm not sure what you are trying to dig up here but I can tell you that I'm a simple girl who doesn't require a lot of attention. I hate drama. I hate big crowds. I would rather sit at home reading a good book versus going to a drunken teenage party." Bella blurted out. She took another bite of her food and glance up at the clock on the wall and realized that lunch was close to an end.
"You are peculiar." Edward laughs softly. His eyes once again shined brightly as he looks quite amused with their conversation.
"That's calling the kettle black." Bella pointed her fork at him before shoveling more food into her mouth.
"I'm peculiar?" Edward gasps, feigning shock.
"I'm afraid so." Bella pursed her lips together, her eyes gleaming with laughter.
"What have you heard?"
"Let's see. You are from a wealthy family. You guys keep to yourself and you despise the local females."
"Why do they think I despise the locals?"
"Well, apparently you have stated those exact words. Maybe you like some locals just not the girls."
Bella was starting to wonder if he preferred the local male population. The guy was beautiful and dressed well. He appeared to be mature for his age and he wasn't even in the least bit flirty. Maybe Jessica had gotten it all wrong. Perhaps Mr. Cullen wasn't snobby but wasn't comfortable letting people know his true sexual preference.
"I like girls. Maybe the girl who shared this information was someone I just didn't find flattering. It is easier and less confrontational to just tell them I don't date locally." Edward revealed his secret to letting disappointed girls down without deflating their egos.
"I'm gathering that you like to play the role of a gentleman?" Bella wasn't sure what to make of him. Their previous encounters he had come off as rude and arrogant but now from their short conversation she was learning that there were several shades of grey with Mr. Cullen. Yet she still wasn't a hundred percent sure if she could trust him. After her recent experience with Jacob, who was the sweetest person she had ever met, proved that her instincts weren't always dead on the money.
"I wouldn't say that I always play the role of the nice guy but I try." Edward gave her a smirky smile.
The sound of the bell put their conversation to a halt.
"Time to get back to class." Bella sighed. She reaches to get her tray but Edward snatches it up first.
"What are you doing?" Bella's eyes squinted together.
"Being a gentleman of course." Edward stated, flashing her a charming smile as he walks away from the table.
Bella grabs her things and walks out of the room still unaware that everyone was and had been talking about her newfound friendship with Fork's High Schools wealthiest and mysterious guy, Edward Cullen.
"Have you gone mad?" Rosalie shouted at her adopted brother while the whole family sat in the luxurious living room of their family home.
"What?" Edward crosses his arms across his chest and smiles innocently at his family.
"He sat at the table with her. He spent his entire lunch talking to her." Rosalie cried out with disgust.
"When did we make it a rule not to speak to humans? I mean how am I suppose to go to school all day and not share an innocent and normal conversation with a teenage girl?" Edward rolled his eyes sarcastically. He didn't hide his dislike of Rosalie's flair for the dramatics. They had been together far too long for him to pretend that it didn't annoy him. He loved his sister but there were moments, like the present, when she blew things out of portion.
"There is no rule in place to prevent you from acknowledging your classmates or sharing a simple conversation." Carlisle agreed. He was the father figure of the Cullen/Hale clan and he was also their maker.
"Then what did I do wrong?" Edward shook his head in disbelief as the family gathered around him and was looking at him as if he had committed a crime.
"REALLY?" Rosalie once again shouted louder than necessary.
"Why this girl?" Carlisle asks. He is more curious as to what it was about this human female that intrigued the young man he first turned into a vampire. He had known Edward longer than all of the other family members. Edward was in every way the son he would have always wanted had he remained human. They shared an unbreakable bond.
"Why not?" Edward shrugged his shoulders.
"Tell them Edward." Alice stated calmly unlike her sister.
"Tell them what?" Emmett asks, he was starting to become interested in the rather lame conversation.
"Bella is a nice girl. She isn't like the other girls. She is just more mature for her age." Edward continued to remain silent about his recent discovery. He still wasn't sure what it meant and he didn't want his family jumping ship and possibly do something rash.
"Is she beautiful?" Esme puts out her question. As the mother of the group, she tries her best to give each of the children the comfort and the love they needed to be content with the lives they shared.
"I guess." Edward showed no emotions. He was playing it cool.
"Not really?" Rosalie snorted.
"What are you afraid to tell us?" Alice again pushes Edward to be more forthcoming about the girl whose future Alice couldn't read.
"Nothing. I swear." Edward scoffed at their unnecessary concerns.
"What do you know?" Carlisle looks over at Alice.
"I know that I can't read her. I can't see any of her decisions or her possible future." Alice decided to be completely honest with the rest of the family. She had no reason to hide anything even if it was apparent to her that Edward was hiding something.
"Is that possible?" Emmett asks.
"I suppose. I mean I have honestly never come across it before now." Alice sighs heavily.
"Do you think she is a threat to us?" Esme asks, her face displaying her open fear of the oddity.
"I doubt it." Edward starts laughing hysterically.
"Look at him. This is not normal." Rosalie points at her brother's unusual laughter. Everyone knew that Edward was the calmest and honestly most boring individual of the group. He kept to himself and played it safe. He wasn't reckless or deceitful. He was the last person you would question their loyalty to their family but suddenly everyone was feeling slightly apprehensive about the change in his behavior.
"Enough." Carlisle waves his hands at the family with a disapproving glare.
"What? Are you kidding me?"Rosalie rolls her eyes angrily and then storms out of the room with Emmett following right behind her.
Alice looks over at her partner and lover Jasper who remained silent throughout the entire meeting.
"Let's go for a quick hunt." Alice takes his hand and left the house together.
"They are gone. Let's talk. Man to man." Carlisle's eyes flash with determination.
Edward knows that he can no longer be vague about his questions and personal interest in Bella. Carlisle won't be as easily deterred as his siblings.
"Rosalie is honestly acting absurd. Maybe she is just jealous that I showed someone some attention other than her or Alice."
"I think we both know it runs deeper than that. Rosalie might overreact but she has good instincts. So what is it about this girl? Rosalie said she was the daughter of the local sheriff who recently moved to town." Carlisle poured them both a glass of brandy while they walked to the terrace and stood out beneath the tall trees that shaded their home from the sun.
"Yes. She is a new girl. She is mature and clumsy. I helped her after she fell. I drop off some of her homework later that night. Then today the two of us sat at lunch and discuss the gossip about my bad boy reputation." Edward revealed as he sipped on the liquor, savoring the taste but wishing it was blood in its place. Vampires couldn't get drunk as easily on normal alcohol but blood was a whole other matter. The high you could get while draining the life out of a human was unlike any drug ever created. However, their family no longer drank human blood. No, they kept themselves fed on animal blood instead.
"It seems Alice fears the girl because her special vampire gift doesn't work on Bella. What about you?" Carlisle knows Edward is hiding something from them but doesn't understand why.
"What?" Edward knows it is futile to delay any longer telling his father the truth and he couldn't explain why but he felt this unexplainable need to protect her at all costs.
"What are her thoughts like? You can hear them, can't you?" Carlisle studies Edward's facial expression and posture. He knows Edward better than anyone. If his son was lying to him then he must think it's was for a good reason. He would never doubt Edward's loyalty to him or to the rest of the family.
Edward places both hands on the railings and looks down at the dirt-covered ground. He knows its important for his relationship with his father to be truthful and that Carlisle would be the last person to suggest causing any harm to Bella. Carlisle believed in protecting humans not killing them. It was his code as a doctor and as a vampire that made him believed that they all had souls even if they were no longer human.
"No. I can't." Edward sighs heavily in defeat.
"But you can't tell Alice or Rosalie. They might want to hurt her." Edward pleaded with his father.
"Why? There is no reason to cause harm to her." Carlisle scoffed at the foolish notion that this was any reason to feel as if the girl was a direct threat to them.
"Alice said that she thought Bella was somehow supernatural." Edward confided.
"Possibly. But maybe not." Carlisle appeared unafraid.
"Then why is she immune to our gifts?" Edward turns and looks at his father for his wisdom.
"Well, let us remember that not all new vampires are reborn with a special gift. I mean being a vampire in itself already has several rewards. But a few of our kind are given one special talent that sets them apart from the rest." Carlisle points out that not all of them were exactly the same.
"True."
"Bella is definitely different among her peers but that is no reason for us to fear her." Carlisle watch as his son relaxes hearing his lack of fear of the girl. Now Carlisle was intrigued about this Bella Swan but for entirely different reasons than the rest of the family. He wonders how she had intrigued his son. No other human woman had ever managed to gain Edwards interest or protection in the hundred and four years he had known him.
"So it's okay if I continue to getting acquainted with her?" Edward asks.
"Sure. I will also make it abundantly clear to the girls that they are to stay out of your way and to do nothing to put her in harm. But remember Edward it's important you do nothing that might make her suspect what we truly are. You know the consequences if humans discover our secret." Carlisle pats his sons back and gives him an understanding smile.
"I promise." Edward agrees.
"Good. Now let's go find your mother and put all of her fears to rest."
Jacob waited until his father was in a deep sleep before he snuck out of the house. He had made up his mind that he was going to run over to Bella's house in hopes of climbing up in her tree and taking a peek at her. He needed to see her. Sam never said he couldn't look at the girl from afar. He just said he couldn't talk to her.
Rushing through the woods he made sure to keep off the trail that his pack brothers would be following to look out for potential vampires in the area. It took him no time to arrive to his destination. He waited in the woods until he saw her turn off her bedroom light and then waited another thirty minutes before he snuck up the tall tree. He listens closely to the heartbeats in the house. There were only two. One was coming from the first floor. Charlie no doubt fell asleep on the couch watching ESPN again. The other was closer to where he perched on the tree limb.
He noticed she left the window up despite the cold weather. Jacob was immune to it thanks to the extra heat that his wolf provided them both. The wind carried out her scent of strawberries and cream with a hint of vanilla. She smelled like a delicious dessert.
The sound of Bella's breathing was shallow. She was asleep. Not wanting to wake her or worse scaring her he quietly crawl into her room. He knew he was pushing his luck but being close to her made him feel pure again. Ever since his transformation, he found himself feeling angry and disgusted. His father told him that his magical ability of shift changing was a blessing from their ancestors, not a curse but for Jacob it made him feel less than human.
Seeing Bella with his own two eyes made him feel less anxious and gave him hope for his future. He realized he was not only protecting his people from the cold ones but also her. If any vampire even thought of getting close to her he would rip it's fucking head off. His wolf began to twist and grind beneath his skin as they both felt rage at the possibility of their enemy harming even a hair on her head.
Jacob stared down at her auburn hair and fair skin. His hand reaches down and pushes a loose piece of hair back behind her ear.
Bella stirred in her sleep and whispered his name.
"Jacob."
His heart rate escalated and his body began to twitch as the desire to pull her in his arms grew rapidly by the second. He was not only fighting himself but his wolf. Jacob wasn't sure what to make of this. Normally his wolf only went crazy when he was near danger. Bella was no threat to either of them.
"Mmm….yes….kiss me…" Bella continued to mumble with desire in her voice.
Jacob felt his manhood hardening. The sound of her soft satin voice, the scent of her desire filling the room and months of loneliness began to take hold of him. If he didn't leave right now he knew that he was capable of doing something that would have dire consequences for him later.
"I...missed you," Bella replies with sadness in her voice.
Jacob felt his heart-crushing at the thought of his sweet Bella being sad. Especially if he was the cause for that pain.
"Bella." Jacob's voice gently whispers next to her ear as he knelt down beside her.
"Yes." Bella replies.
"I miss you too." Jacob confessed.
"Touch me. I need you." Bella moaned, her hands gliding down her body and reaching the center between her legs.
Jacob felt as if he would pass smooth out. He had never experienced anything remotely like this before not even in his wildest dreams. He watched as Bellas hand moved and grope herself giving her pleasure that he wishes he had the balls to do himself.
The scent of her lust and need flooded his nostrils. Closing his eyes he inhaled it and savored it. This was his Bella. Leaning closer he peppered her face with soft kisses making a slow trail down to the side of her neck.
"Yyyesss…" She cried out.
Jacob wonder if she was having an orgasm. Her chest heaved, her small but firm breasts push at the thin material of her nightgown.
"Oh god." He shut his eyes tightly and tried to think of anything that might help him find the strength to leave this room before he molested her in her sleep.
The sound of a wolf howling off in the distance brought him back to reality quickly.
"Shit." Jacob stood up and slip over to the window. Had his brothers discovered that he was here with her? Or were they hunting? If they were hunting why were they so close to town? Looking back at Bella he saw she had somehow managed to fall back into a peaceful sleep. Smiling sadly he blew her a kiss and climb out of the window.
If he had been caught by Sam then he would deal with the hell to come but if danger was nearby then he needed to get out there to keep it far away from his precious Bella.
