Chapter Four:

The scent of the trees perfumed the cool night air. Jacob ran as fast as he could home. He decided not to take his usual route in case someone or something was following him. He also wanted to throw off his pack brothers if they were spying on him. It would be like Paul to send someone out to keep an eye on him. Sam would be reluctant to make that call because he was doing his best to try and maintain trust within the pack. Paul didn't give a rat's ass. He liked causing chaos and anger among them. Paul made it his life's purpose to push each of them to their breaking point. Jacob refused to bow down to him. He might do as he was asked but it wouldn't stop him from questioning something when he felt it was wrong or stupid. This, of course, pissed Paul off and Jacob received a small about of joy from it.

"Jacob. Is that you?" Billy called from the living room.

Jacob wondered how the old man had a keen sense of hearing? Jacob finished climbing into his room and made his way to the living room.

"Hey, Dad." Jacob stretched his arms above his head trying to appear that he just awoke from a deep nap.

"Where have you been?" Billy asks, his eyes sparkling with wisdom.

"I was in my room." Jacob said.

"Before you crawl in where did you go?" Billy asked.

"What do you need?" Jacob wasn't in the mood to argue with his father. Billy was in full agreement with Sam about keeping Bella away from the reservation and from Jacob.

"I need you to start listening to your Alpha and do what you are told." Billy answered. His voice was deep and firm as his eyes lock with Jacobs.

"I do listen to my Alpha." Jacob snickered rudely.

"Really? So when he said do not leave the reservation you have followed that rule."

"I did." Jacob boldface lied.

"Jacob!" Billy yelled, his voice booming in the small room.

"What?' Jacob continued his charade.

"Bella called tonight." Billy inhaled deeply.

"And?" Jacob sat down on the lumpy couch, giving his father his full attention.

"And I told her you were well but you were busy hanging out with your friends." Billy clasped his hands together on his lap while watching to see how Jacob would react to his treachery.

"That was stupid." Jacob sighed.

"Why was it stupid?" Billy scoffed.

"It will only make her more determine than ever to see me." Jacob's lips curled into an enormous grin.

"I think you give her too much credit. Sure you guys were friends but you weren't boyfriend and girlfriend. She has other friends to hang out with.I'm sure her calls were out of common courtesy. Now that she knows you are physically well she will stop calling and start hanging out with her townie friends." Billy stated with a cocky smile.

Jacob could see that his father thought he had managed to put a stop to his friendship between his son and Bella. It was hardly over. What no one knew was that he and Bella Swan had kissed. It wasn't a passionate kiss but it held the promise of much more to come. After hearing Bella's dream earlier he knew that she was still carrying a torch for him. He had felt calmer and more like the old Jacob in the ten minutes he spent in her room than he had in the past two months. It felt good to be normal. Just a simple teenage boy who was crazy about a girl who liked him back.

"Dad trust me. Bella Swan is hard-headed like her father. Oh and if anything you probably pissed her off. If she thinks I'm healthy but ignoring her she will search me out for answers or at the very least to chew me a new asshole." Jacob replies.

"This is...no...I will tell Charlie that this...illness could still be contagious and he will not let her go within a hundred feet of this place." Billy cried out, smacking his fist on the arm of his wheelchair.

"You can try but what I felt with Bella isn't some teenage crush. She was made for me. I feel it. Even my wolf knows it." Jacob vowed as he walked back to his room, slamming his door and falling into a much-needed sleep.

Billy looked around the room muttering nasty words underneath his breathe until suddenly he sucks in his breath and held it for a moment.

"What did he mean his wolf knows it?" Billy thought out loud. How could Jacob be that in sync with his wolf that he would know what it desired? He was still a pup in the early stages of his training. It took Sam six months before he understood his purpose and how to help the others as they slowly began to make their transformations. So how could Jacob possibly be intuned with his inner animal? That was something only the Alpha could do or at least that was what they had been told and read about. The rest of the pack were mere soldiers for the cause. Billy scratches his head and pondered if he should reveal to the council that Jacob Black, his son might be another Alpha in their small pack. Would they laugh at him or would they be furious? Two Alphas with one pack were not only dangerous for the Vampires but it also could start a war among the pack. If any opposed Sam they would feel incline to stand with Jacob.

Billy was conflicted. On one hand, he was proud that his son who came from a long line of Chiefs was being gifted with such an honor but on the other hand it also put him in a very dangerous predicament.

He knew, for now, it was best to remain quiet and watch his son closely for any other signs of the potential Alpha gene before he made it a problem that the council would want to handle personally.

Bella opened her front door with the intent of going into town for some much-needed groceries but found Edward Cullen leaning against his expensive car wearing a smile that made the pit of her stomach knot up like a pretzel.

"Good morning." Edward called out.

Bella continued to frown at him. She wasn't sure what to say. The guy was just weird, beautifully weird.

"Yeah." Bella forced the one-syllable word out of her mouth.

"Are you saying yes to the good, the morning or both?" Edward joked as he approached her.

Bella had to blink a couple of times before she pushes out from underneath the spell that she fell under whenever he was nearby.

"Both." Bella answer.

"I was in the neighborhood and thought I might have the privilege of visiting with you." Edward says with such elegance that Bella felt for a mere moment she was in an Elizabeth era instead of the twenty-first century. Boys didn't talk like that, right? He just kept giving her more stock to her theory that he was dropped on his head as a baby.

"I'm afraid I'm on my way to the grocery store." Bella pressed her lips together. Hoping he would take that as a subtle clue that she already had plans and he could just go on his merry way now.

"Oh. Well, I could take you." Edward offered with a hint of desperation in his voice.

Bella continued to frown up at him. What was he thinking? Why was he here? Guys like Edward weren't known to be interested in girls like herself. She wasn't rich or drop-dead gorgeous. Jessica Stanley was more of his type and he had rejected her. So what was the scheme here? She didn't trust him despite the innocent look he gave her that made her want to believe every word that came out of his mouth.

"I'm okay going by myself. I make the trip every week." Bella shook her head and started to walk past him to her truck.

"Do you find me repulsive?" Edward blurted out.

"What?" Bella turns and stared at him as if he had just grown an extra arm on his body.

"I feel like you dislike me for some unknown reason." Edward decided to be upfront with her. He was starting to think that his glamour didn't have full effect on her along with his mind-reading power.

"I don't ...I just...you ...I already had plans." Bella struggled with the right words to prevent him from thinking even worse things about her. Bella wasn't hateful. She just preferred to be alone most of the time. This guy just gave off some weird vibes that made her feel uncomfortable. Her instincts just seem to warn her it was best to stay away and that was what she was trying to do but he just was relentless.

"I understand. I just...well...we just moved here and it's hard to find people who you can talk to. I like talking to you." Edward continued to open himself up to her. He was playing on a whole new battlefield. Normally he was private and standoffish but with her, he wanted to let all his defenses down. Maybe he was being foolish and this was just a case of being infatuated with someone different than the people he was always surrounded by.

"Thank you." Bella wasn't sure what to say. It was flattering that he felt like she was worthy of having a conversation with but it still didn't explain why he didn't choose someone other than her to talk to. Surely other people would sell their souls to listen to him speak.

"I know I come off weird. I guess it's due to my time abroad." Edward hoped it sound reasonable for his odd behavior.

"Oh." Bella felt a tinge of guilt wash over her. Maybe she had been wrong about him. What if this whole situation was an innocent way for him to make a friend?

"Yeah, so if you are busy now maybe we could meet up later and study for the English test on Monday. Mr. Barnes tests are brutal."

Bella contemplated his offer for a study date. Charlie would be home so there was no risk of Edward misunderstanding their relationship. She would be completely safe.

"Okay. Seven sounds good?" Bella ask.

"Perfect." Edward claps his hands together and grinned from ear to ear as he practically skipped back to his vehicle.

Bella wasn't sure if she wanted to laugh or cry. The guy was weird. One hundred percent bizarre but he was helping her forget that the only other friend she had was completely ignoring her.

Climbing into her truck she thought about Jacob and wondered if she should go by and try and see him today. Did Billy tell him that she had called? Did he care that she was so lonely without him? He couldn't possibly understand what loneliness felt like. He was charming and sweet the two things that attracted people to him. Jacob would never be without friends unlike herself.

Turning the truck in the direction of town she knew she was going to have to get past her fear of rejection if she was ever going to see Jacob again. He wasn't coming to her. No, he was too busy with his happy and full life in LaPush to worry about the loss of one insignificant friend like herself.

"What's wrong?" Esme asks as she entered her husband's office and saw him holding an official document that appeared to have him deep in thought.

"This isn't good." Carlisle sighed heavily, sitting down in his Italian leather chair. He held onto the paper and reread the short message.

"What is it? Is the Denali's again?" Esme knew the vampire coven probably felt insulted by the lack of attention. Normally when they resided in Washington they would make plans to visit them during the harsh summer months but this year Carlisle wanted to do something different. He liked his role as Doctor and wanted to continue practicing medicine; something he wouldn't be able to do there.

"No. I wish it was that simple." Carlisle crumples the paper in his hand and sets it on his desk.

"Okay, now you have me worried." Esme warns him.

"I just got word that we have some rogues in the area. It seems they are making trouble in several states nearby. The Volturi want us to handle them."

"What?" Esme cries out in dismay.

"Unfortunately we don't have much of a choice, my love. We did pledge our legion to them to keep their greedy paws off of Alice." Carlisle reminded her of the time they spent in Italy and how to keep their family together they had agreed to help the ancient ones whenever they were called on.

"This is...it's...we don't kill vampires." Esme stammered.

"I know. But it's either kill them or allow the Volturi to come to the states and trust me if they arrive more lives than a couple of ruthless Vampires will be lost." Carlisle says with disgust.

"You are right of course." Esme nods sadly at her husband.

"When do we leave?" Alice asks. Her sudden appearance surprising them both.

"I saw it. I saw the rogues they are speaking of. I've been keeping tabs on Aro and the others." Alice confesses.

"Where are they?" Esme asks curiously.

"They are close by. They have been going in circles. Trying to keep the humans off of their tracks." Alice answers as she closes her eyes and looks deep within for more answers.

"Do they plan to come here?" Carlisle asks.

"They have already been here. A few months ago, right after we moved back. Something happened to one of them and the other two left." Alice opened her eyes and exhaled deeply. It was hard being in their minds or even seeing the things they had done. They were killers. No conscience. Although there were three of them they weren't like most covens. No, they were just a group of psychopaths who hung out together. No loyalty or fear among any of them.

"How did we not know about them? If they are bad as the Volturi say then we should have heard about their kills." Carlisle wondered.

"They make it look like animal attacks and the humans feel comforted by that theory. " Alice answered.

"What happened to the third one?" Esme wondered. Vampires were not easily killed. It was hard enough for them to kill their own kind.

"I don't know. He was there one second and then gone the next. All I know is that I see it made the couple frighten enough to leave the area. But…." Alice sucks in her breath as another vision consumed her.

Esme and Carlisle stood quietly and waited patiently for their daughter to reveal more helpful information.

"This is not good." Alice looks at her parents with sheer fear in her eyes.

"They will be back here. They want revenge." Alice tells them with an ominous tone.

"We need to tell the rest of the family. We need to make plans to stop these animals once and for all."Carlisle looks between the two women and nods for them to leave his office and search out the others while he tries to figure out how they can complete their mission so that none of his family are harm and more importantly no more humans are murdered by these monsters.

"How much did you spend exactly?" Charlie asks as he puts away the groceries.

"The same as always." Bella rolls her eyes playfully at her father while she starts on tonight's stew.

"Why does it seem like too much for two people?" Charlie stares at the full cabinets.

"Because you never had food in the pantry before I came. You ate out most of the time." Bella reminded him of his bachelor days when food was practically nonexistent in the Swan household.

"Not true. I always had sandwich meat, bread, chips and plenty of beer in the fridge." Charlie teases.

"Yeah because that is so healthy for a man of your age." Bella answers followed with a soft laugh.

"Listen here young lady I think I have gain weight since you moved in." Charlie patted his stomach.

"Healthy weight. That is what you have now." Bella continues to laugh as Charlie continues to playfully act as if he doesn't enjoy all the food she serves him at mealtime. She knew he was amazed that she could cook at her age. Living with Renee she learned to often fend for herself because her mother was either working late hours or out on a date. Renee was a wonderful Mom but cooking home cook meals wasn't in her arsenal of motherly skills.

"True. So what are our plans for tonight?" Charlie leans against the counter and watches as Bella puts in her healthy ingredients for tonight's meal.

"I'm preparing some stew. I found a recipe that Grandmother Swan used. Maybe it will bring back some good childhood memories for you." Bella answers.

"Now that woman could cook." Charlie sighed sadly but held a smile on his face as memories of his mother in the kitchen crossed his mind.

Bella walks over to the sink and washes her hands when the phone rang. Charlie strolled over and pick it up.

"Hello. Yes. I see. She is washing her hands at the moment. I can give her the message."

Bella looks at Charlie in a state of excitement as she quickly makes her way to him.

"Sure. Okay. Bye." Charlie hung up the phone and stared at his daughter who was heaving from rushing across the room.

"What is wrong with you?" Charlie frown at his daughter.

"Who was it?" Bella demanded. Her foot tapping anxiously on the wooden floors, her arms crossed over her chest as she stared excitedly up at her father.

"It was a guy you apparently invited over for a date. " Charlie replies very slowly while enjoying the nervousness on Bella's face. He hadn't seen her act like a typical teenager in months.

"What?" Bella gasped.

"You and one Mr. Cullen were supposed to hang out here tonight but unfortunately his family made other plans. He can't join you." Charlie relayed the message that Edward had politely asked him to give to his daughter.

"Oh. Edward. Yeah." Bella blew out a big breath of air. Walking away she made her way to the fridge and pulled out a cold beverage.

"You seem more upset by WHO the caller was instead of the message." Charlie stated with a confused smile.

"Edward is a nice guy I suppose. We were just going to study later tonight." Bella shrugs her shoulders.

Charlie suspected that Bellas's interest in this Edward was nowhere as significant as the feelings she had for Jacob. He knew Bella was on the verge of breaking her promise to him and going out to LaPush to see Jacob. He had hoped after so much time she would have moved onto new friendships with other guys here in town.

"He..I mean Edward seems truly upset that he wouldn't be able to study with you tonight. I don't know much about the family but he seems like an okay guy." Charlie wasn't about to push his daughter into the arms of any guy just so she could get past her crush on Jacob Black but he was growing weary of watching her suffer while Jacob was clearly no longer an option for her. He knew that Jacob was doing well because he spoke with Billy just the day before. Billy seems to think that Jacob was too busy to give Bella any attention.

Charlie wanted to agree with Billy's assessment of their children's relationship but Charlie saw the way Jacob would react whenever his daughter walk into a room. There was no doubt in his mind that Jacob was or had been crushing on his daughter.

"I can study by myself just as easily with him." Bella chuckled roughly as she plopped down in the kitchen chair and sipped on her soda.

"You don't ...you know got the hots for him?" Charlie was attempting to sound like a cool Dad but any conversation that had guys and his daughter in it was just uncomfortable.

"Hots? Really Charlie." Bella burst out laughing.

She knew Charlie was trying his best to have a conversation with her that included boys and it was out of his comfort zone and that was just another reason she loved him so much.

"Whatever! But seriously you don't ever date Bella. And as someone who is happy you don't, I also know that it's normal for you to want a boyfriend." Charlie exhaled, running his hands nervously over his face and through his thick hair.

"I don't know what I want. I just...I'm just picky." Bella opened up.

"Nothing wrong with that. In fact, I think that is wise." Charlie smiled with approval.

"Mom did always say I got her brains." Bella teased.

"What? No, you got my brains and her beauty." Charlie laughs wholeheartedly.

"So what do you want to do tonight?" Bella ask.

"I have to go to work for a few hours. You can join me if you want. I just have to make a few drives through town to make sure it's safe for the people leaving the bar later." Charlie offered.

"Nah. I think I will just do that studying." Bella shook her head.

"Well, my offer is there if you get bored."

Bella got up and check on her stew while Charlie made his way to the living room. Bella looks out the kitchen window and for a second she could have almost sworn she saw Edward Cullen standing by her truck. Blinking her eyes she looked again but there was no one there.

"You are losing your mind." Bella told herself as she left the room and went upstairs to do that studying she dreaded but had to do if she wanted to keep her perfect GPA.

"Are you freaking crazy!" Quil cries out anxiously. Both of them were still in wolf form but they were able to communicate telepathically.

"What?" Jacob pretends to be unaware of where he had been leading them to.

"This is far too close to town. Sam doesn't want us to be in wolf form this close." Quil reminds him of the rules.

"We still have a mile or two before we cross the boundaries." Jacob reminds him.

"Jacob. You are totally going to have Jared and Paul kicking our asses when we return." Quil didn't want to think about all the extra running and or possible wrestling match that Paul would insist was needed to make them all stronger and better fighters.

"Why are you so afraid of them?" Jacob scoffs as he fights to keep thoughts of Bella out of his mind. He knows that memories and certain thoughts were something else the pack had the misfortune of sharing if they weren't careful. It was funny and scary at the same time. It mostly depended on what you were seeing and feeling from the other person. Some things were just meant to be private.

"I'm not afraid. I ...I just respect them." Quil urges his wolf to move faster to try and keep up with Jake. He was jealous of how Jake was able to adapt to his wolf better than most of them.

The sounds of cars on the road and chimneys burning wood could be heard and smelt. Quil knew they were near Bella's and he didn't want to bring up the fact because he knew Jacob would only go into a dark place. Jacob was pissed that he was banned from seeing her.

Out of nowhere, the sweet and almost sickening scent filled the air.

"Do you smell it?" Jacob asks, his heart racing within the wolf. He could feel it urging him frantically to chase the scent.

"Yeah. It's...too sweet. What is it?" Quil felt his wolf at the moment pushing him to find the source behind it.

"Maybe we should go ask Sam." Quil wasn't sure where it came from but all of a sudden he felt extremely nervous and agitated.

Jacob halted. He looks through his wolf's eyes and took a deep sniff. They were close to Bella's and that smell seems to be near it.

"Jacob! Stop!"Quil cried out as Jacob let out a long and loud howl, unlike anything he had ever done before.

A few seconds later the sound of other howls follows it. Quil knew the others who were out scouting would soon locate them. He just hoped that whatever got Jacob's hair standing up at the ends was worth the beating they would get later when Sam found out just how close they were to Forks and more importantly Bella Swan's house.

A/N: Only a few more chapters left. I found out today that I am off of work for another week so doing my best to finish this story as swiftly as possible. I have to share my computer with my daughter/granddaughter so they can do their classwork. So some chapters might be posted later than usual. Also curious if anyone else is writing fanfiction or know of any good reads. Let me know what you think of the story so far and I hope you are staying safe and healthy. Xoxo August
