Like a number of stories, this one just came to me out of thin air. Enjoy!

Not one to ever get bored with it, Sonic the Hedgehog had run a few laps around Azure Lake Zone, and having gotten his share of fresh air, sunshine and exercise, he decamped to his cabin on the south end of the lake. Though he could easily live on his own two feet provided he got the bare necessities, the Blue Blur enjoyed having a roof over his head that he could come back to at the end of the day, and this cabin had enough modern amenities inside to keep him comfortable. He sat down on the leather couch in front of the big screen TV and was about to turn the TV on when he heard somebody else open the door.

"Good evening, Sonic!"

"Tails?" Sonic hopped off the couch to greet Miles "Tails" Prower. "Hey, just the dude I was lookin' for! Come here and have a seat with me!"

Not one to let his best friend down, Tails walked over to the couch and sat down with Sonic.

"What's on your mind?" asked Tails.

"I've been thinkin…" Sonic tapped his chin.

"Yeah?"

"We've been friends a long time, right?"

"Right…"

"And we've been on a lotta adventures together, too."

"And…?"

"And to tell ya the truth, in all that jazz, I feel like there's somethin' that I don't tell ya often enough."

"What?"

Sonic smiled. "Tails…you're the best thing in my life, ever!"

Tails' eyes widened. "Do you really mean that?"

Sonic put a hand on Tails' shoulder. "No jive, man!"

"Sonic…"

After staring into Sonic's eyes for a bit, Tails hugged him. Ol' Blue was only too happy to return the gesture, although one of his ears twitched when he thought he heard sniffling.

"Tails, if ya gotta cry, there's nothin' wrong with that! Just let it out, man!"

And so, Sonic held on to Tails tightly. Big Blue sort of had an urge to cry himself, but he felt as though it was impossible to let it out. Besides, he felt better acting as the rock to lean on. Regardless, it meant a lot to him to be able to tell Tails how he really felt about him and to share in their friendship like this. Similarly, Tails felt like the best person in the world after hearing how Sonic really felt about him. Though he'd always seen him as the cool, cocky and collected adventurer type who was never one to back down from a challenge no matter how big it was to chew, he treasured this side, the one who deeply cared about the people who mattered to him because of his 24-karat heart. Eventually, Tails stopped crying, but Sonic kept holding on to him, partly because he wanted to keep comforting him, but partly because he was so fluffy. Tails soon backed off from Sonic, but kept holding on.

"Thanks, Sonic. That's the nicest thing anyone's ever said to me."

"Ain't no thang, Tails! I'm always glad to let good people know how much they mean to me!"

Tails opened a pouch on his tool belt, pulled out a tissue, blew his nose and dried his eyes.

"If there's anything else I can do for ya, just lay it on me!" said Sonic.

"Well, I'm comfortable doing whatever you wanna do…" said Tails.

"Why don't we watch some TV for a while? I wanna check out the next episode of Emerald City Red and eat a bunch of BBQ chicken and cheese nachos!"

Tails' jaw dropped. "Oh, that sounds so good…"

"Groovy! Just hang tough while I get our grub ready…"

Sonic hopped off the couch and went to prepare their food, while Tails sat down and basked in how happy he was to be with his best friend ever.

Criticism is gold. Negativity and nitpicking are pyrite.
