She's the monster under his bed.
He's never seen her before. He's only ever heard her voice, whenever they chat at night.
During the day, she's silent as she sleeps. He sleeps too, to escape the boredom that comes with being alone.
By night, she'd start to talk. The boredom from the day is forgotten as she brings tales of the day, events that he had missed out on.
She reveals to him that she can do anything, as long as it's within the dream realm. She could chase away his nightmares, make him dream of cute animals and smiles. He shakes his head, no, just having her by his side is enough, he says.
She is the monster under his bed. And she has fallen in love with him.
He is sweet, and kind, never failing to smile. He is shy and timid, but did not reject her presence. He is considerate and thoughtful, limiting his movements in his sleep so he wouldn't disturb her. He was different from everyone else, who saw her as a monster to be feared, when all she had wanted was for someone to see her for who she was. That was what he did. He saw her for her.
That's why she had been selfish, keeping him here far longer than she should have.
She is the monster under his bed. She could do anything as long as it's within the dream realm. See you again. With those parting words, she sent him away from here, so he could be by the side of the person he loves.
"...Wataru?" The first thing Takagi registered was the soft voice that had called out to him. Her voice was one he had heard every night, yet never seen. But now, when he opened his eyes, he's greeted with the sight of her worried purple eyes, filled with tears as she gazed upon him from above with an expression that was filled with relief. "You're awake! I was so scared you wouldn't make it..." She sniffled as he felt her gently take his hand in her own, her warm hands a stark contrast to his cold ones. "Do you need anything? Water? Or a doctor?" He smiled as he shook his head 'no'.
"Just having you by my side is enough, Miwako."
