Chapter 12:

The fake boyfriend

She has been here before, it feels the same somehow, but at the same time, it feels so out of place.

It feels weird to say the least. She is Rachel Berry; she is unable to do anything without being wholeheartedly into it.

However, here she is, in a date with Finn. He didn't take her to any special place. They went to the movie theater and now, they are eating at the breadsticks. Actually, Finn is eating; she is just anticipating the moment he is going to take her home.

"So? How is summer going?" he asks casually.

"It is okay…" She answers with no passion.

"You know I'm only asking because you kind of went MIA on me, right? We totally could have hung out more."

"I know. I was busy with…" She trails off, her thoughts going immediately to Quinn.

"What?"

"Some stuff, family issues."

It is not a total lie, right? She thinks.

"Something wrong?" He asks, more curious than worried.

"No. Nothing to worry about."

"Okay. I'm glad we're here."

She nods and smiles the smallest of all smiles. She knows he is talking about their relationship and not just their current location.

Later on, when Finn is walking her to her house's front door, she starts thinking about her predicament. Finn is going to kiss her for sure, that's expected. Sure, she can avoid it, at least tonight. But she won't manage to do it forever, Finn it's not the smartest guy around, but he is a guy nonetheless, he may not connect things, but he will have needs and he will want things. She can't say "I'm not into it now" every time.

"Here we go"

He says as they reach the door.

"Right."

She says a little relieved.

Finn doesn't notice though, to him, she is only being shy because they are getting back together again and it's like they are back to the beginning, to the time when they started dating. He can't notice anything out of the ordinary. For now.

"Good night, Rach."

He says and kisses her. It is not exactly a chaste kiss, but he managed to keep his tongue in his own mouth. It's all she can think of the kiss.

He leaves and she gets inside her house with a strange feeling.

Months ago, she would have loved going out with Finn. Now, she is just relieved the date is over.

"I'm home!" She shouts already going up the stairs.

"Okay, honey!" Leroy shouts back from the living room.

"How was the date?" Hiram asks.

"It was…" All right. She thinks. "Good." She says aloud. "I'm coming to my room, good night!"

"Good night!" They both shout.

She is glad they didn't want to chat more, she is actually not in the mood to pretend everything is okay. Yes, she told Quinn she was going to do it. It doesn't mean she is going to be thrilled about it. The whole "fake date" thing is depressing alone; doing it with a guy she used to be in love with is discouraging to say the least.

Closing the door behind her, she lights up the room.

Then she hears it: "How was it?"

"Ahhh!" Rachel screams frightened.

"Rachel!"

The pink-haired apparition complains.

"What?"

"Your fathers…"

"My…" Rachel opens her mouth incredulous. "You scared the shit out of me and have the nerve to worry about my fathers?"

Quinn rolls her eyes petulantly and stands up as she was sitting on Rachel's bed.

"You're overreacting."

"I'm not." The brunette crosses her arms. "Why are you here? How did you manage to get in by the way?"

"Hiram let me in."

"He did?"

"Yeah. I told I needed to take a book I forgot here."

"Okay… But why-"

Before Rachel can finish the sentence, Leroy knocks on the door.

"Rachel? What happened?"

She opens the door.

"Nothing, Quinn is here. I got a fright. That's all."

"Oh yeah, we forgot to tell you."

"Thanks for that." She says sarcastically as Quinn and her dad giggle. The ex-cheerio however recomposes herself quickly.

"I'm going home in a minute sir." Quinn says politely.

"It's okay honey, just don't go too late, I don't want you driving around late at night."

"Okay." She nods.

"Good night." He says and leaves them.

"He said honey." Quinn smiles, content.

"See? I told you, he was only being protective."

"I know. Something is telling me that he won't like it though, when he finds out about us."

"Why not?"

"Because we're lying to him."

"He'll understand. Besides, let's not worry about it now, we have something else to discuss."

All of sudden, Quinn remembers why she is there and her basic instincts are kicking in.

"How was it?" She asks right away.

"What are you doing here?" Rachel dodges the question with another question.

Quinn takes a deep breath, sliding her fingers on her hair in exasperation.

"You're freaking out already baby."

"I'm not." She says, too controlled to look natural. She shakes her head for good measure, but ends up looking a little bit more edgy. "I just need to know how it was, can you tell me please or you're going to let me in the dark here?"

"Quinn…" Rachel says sweetly.

"Rachel." Quinn whines.

"We did what it was expected." Rachel raises her arms. "You dated him. You know how it is."

She goes toward the bathroom and Quinn sits on the bed.

"Did he kiss you?"

As Rachel is brushing her teeth, Quinn doesn't get her answer. She then stands up and goes to the bathroom as well.

"Did he?"

Rachel looks at her through the mirror meaningfully. Then she continues with her task, spills in the sink and answers.

"What do you think?"

Quinn turns around, goes back to the bed and throws herself on the mattress in a tantrum.

"Baby?"

Rachel tries out as she gets out of the bathroom.

"Was it in the movies? Did he try something else?"

"No, remember when I said we were going to watch one of those action movies?"

"Yeah…"

"So, he actually, watched the movie."

"When did he kiss you then?"

"Is this the part where I'll have to sing a song?"

"What do you mean? What song?"

Rachel doesn't answer, she starts singing, although in a playful manner.

"Suddenly the world seems such a perfect place
Suddenly it moves with such a perfect grace"

Lying on the bed too, she gets by Quinn's side, placing her arm around the other girl, her mouth close to Quinn's ear.

"Suddenly my life doesn't seem such a waste
It all revolves around you…"

"I'm serious." Quinn says with her eyes on the celling, although she has a smile on the corner of her lips.

"I won't manage to do it if you're going to act like this."

Quinn sighs and turns around to face Rachel. They get face to face, with their noses almost touching.

"It's just that…" She says almost like a whisper.

"What?"

"I'll be a little edgy sometimes…"

"You don't have to be. I want you. I don't want him, not anymore."

"Kiss me."

"You don't have to ask." Rachel smiles. "You're my girlfriend."

"Say that again."

"You're my girlfriend."

This time is Quinn who is genuinely smiling. The pink-haired girl leans forward and kisses her girlfriend, slowly and tenderly, capturing Rachel's upper lip between her own lips in such a longing way that it almost seems like they are in slow motion. She then moves to Rachel's bottom lip, biting it slightly and releasing it slowly and sensuously. Rachel feels every part of her body coming to life with the kiss, and as Quinn pulls away the brunette girl exhales audible.

"Stay the night." Rachel says, still in a haze.

"Do you think it's okay?"

"Yeah, there's nothing wrong with it, right? I'll tell my dads we lost track of the time. Do you think your mother will mind?"

"No. I did it before. I spent the night at Santana's a couple of times."

"Really?" Rachel stands up and gets in a sitting position.

"Are you jealous?" Quinn teases and bites Rachel's elbow playfully.

"Of course not. Just intrigued."

"Yeah right."

"Okay. Something about you and Santana makes me feel a little threatened."

"What? Why? I mean, it's Santana, we basically fight all the time."

Rachel look at her girlfriend in a meaningful way.

"It's different."

"Are you sure? Don't you think she is attractive?"

"Of course I do."

Rachel huffs.

"Be more excited about it, would you?"

"What?"

"Forget it."

"I was just telling the truth. What's the big deal? I find her attractive but I don't want her like…"

"What?"

"Like I want you."

Rachel nods slightly.

"She is taken by the way."

"Brittany."

"Brittany." Quinn nods.

"Do you think they will work out their issues?"

"They don't have issues. They love each other. Santana was just a coward."

"How can you say that? You know how it is…"

"I know, sorry, you're right. It's just that…"

"What?"

"Santana's mother is great, Brittany's parents too. They are both cheerios, they don't have our issues."

"And you think is easier for them because of that?"

Rachel gets thoughtful. Some memories of things she said that she shouldn't have said are coming to light.

"I get you. I was kind of a jerk with them."

"When?" Quinn asks, intrigued.

"The song they sang with Miss Holliday?"

"Oh."

Quinn nods as she remembers that day and how Rachel was kind of out of her character there. Rachel always embraced the differences and she was always supportive, the gaylesbal thing? Besides, she has her dads as an example.

"I shouldn't have said that."

"Yeah. I remember. It was odd."

"I was just jealous. If someone can get away with coming out, this someone is Santana. She is fierce, she is popular, and she is hot. People like Kurt and me however…"

"I guess."

"But that's the point." Rachel takes Quinn's hand. "It doesn't work like this. Sure, maybe if you were dating Santana you wouldn't worry about slushies and this kind of stuff."

"That's why you were concerned? You think I'd chose Santana because it's easier?"

"It's kind of irrational, I know…"

"Kind of?"

"Yeah, like you worrying about Finn."

"It's different." Quinn says as she frowns.

"It's not and you said you were going to be okay with it."

Rachel stands up and starts pacing.

"I'm not going to fight with you every time he takes me on a date. I cannot Quinn. I'd rather coming home cover in slushie every day." She says a little edgy.

"Hey…"

Quinn gets close and hugs her girlfriend.

"Sorry. You're right. You're right."

She kisses Rachel's hair.

"What if we tell him the truth?"

"Tell Finn?"

"Yeah. Maybe he will help us. Finn is a good person."

"Baby, do you think he will help his ex-girlfriends by fake dating one of them?"

Rachel sighs.

"It's not that I think he is a bad person, but he is moron. He will throw a tantrum, he'll make this about him and by the time he'll come around and decides he wants to be a good guy the damage will be done."

"You're probably right…"

"I know I am."

"But I feel awful. I didn't want to have to do this."

"I know baby. It sucks."

"And you being jealous makes everything worse."

Quinn cups both of Rachel's cheeks and looks at her girlfriend's eyes.

"I'll always be jealous. I can't lie to you. But I promise I'll always trust you. Okay?"

Rachel nods.

"I'll think of something, it's just important that everyone sees you two together as we start senior year. After that we'll always be on glee, people will assume you guys are still together, I'll make sure there's no way I'll want him back so he won't try anything after you break up with him. We just need to control his temper and ego."

"Okay."

"Come what may." Quinn says tenderly as Rachel smiles in total bliss.

She is utterly in love with the girl in front of her. What is she thinking? This is not a good idea at all.

"You're going to be bad for business. I can tell." She says playful as Quinn smiles carefree.

Then, they kiss, passionately so. In fact, after Rachel informs her dads Quinn is going to sleep over, they plan to spend the night doing exactly this, kissing each other.

Oh! When Leroy finds out that, they are not just friends…
