Susan leaped off her platform and the music started playing in the background. She looked towards where Two's platform was, but Two was nowhere in sight. "Damn it!" Susan murmured to herself. Now she had no idea in what direction Two was going. "Just focus," she whispered. Susan climbed on top of the tallest box pile, trying to get a better view of the arena. Her eyes darted from side to side, trying to catch any movement. There was no movement, no sound, no nothing. Susan cursed under her breath and knelt on top of the box, readying her Squiffer. "At least I have the high ground," she thought. "I'll be able to-"
Suddenly, out of the corner of her eye, she saw something green move. Realization washed over her and she threw herself to the side. Green ink flew through the air, right where she had been a second ago. She had avoided being splatted, but now there was another problem. The floor was coming towards her at full speed. Susan put her arms over her head preparing for impact. She crashed into the floor, pain shooting through her body. Her Squiffer landed a few meters away, but thankfully it didn't break. Susan let out a loud groan. "How did she manage to get so close to my spawn in such a short time?" went through her head as she stood up. "And she did it while also being undetected!"
Susan staggered towards her charger and took a deep breath. At least she was out of sight, for now. There's a big pile of boxes between me and he-"
But she froze. Two was standing on top of the box pile Susan had just fallen from, the sun shining through the windows behind her, so Susan could only see her silhouette. Susan's eyes widened and she dashed behind another pile. The ink flew right past her ear, and Susan's body ached in pain. Panting, Susan knelt down, checking her Squiffer for damages. Thankfully, it seemed okay, but the trigger was at a weird angle. Before she could inspect it further however, she heard someone land on the boxes above her. She turned, aiming her charger where she thought the sound was and shot. But the sun shone into her eyes so her aim faltered and Two dodged her shot easily, aiming her charger down at Susan. Susan rolled to the side, just barely dodging Two's ink. She charged her Squiffer again and fired a trail of ink across the floor, changing into octo form the second she pulled the trigger and swam as fast as she could away. She could hear Two shooting shots after her, but she was able to swim out of reach. When she had no trail left, she changed back into kid form and shot again. "I have to get far away," Susan thought. "I have to get on even ground."
While she swam through the ink, Susan realized something. Two was purposely attacking her from that angle and forcing her on lower ground so that the sun would distract her. And she had jumped all the way from up on the big pile and on the one Susan had been hiding behind. "Damn, she's good," Susan murmured as she dashed behind another pile. She sighed and crouched down. "This should be far enough."
Susan couldn't hear anything, no footsteps or nothing. Just the music in the background. Susan gave up on trying to hear Two and started to climb up the box pile. She couldn't risk creating an ink trail to swim up, that would give her position away. When she reached the top, Susan peeked her head from behind the top crate, checking if the coast was clear. There was no sign of Two anywhere. Susan breathed lighter and started to climb up on the crate. But suddenly, green ink came flying from her right, brushing her hair. Susan was startled and leaped off the stack of boxes. Two fired again, but Susan was able to dodge behind a lonely crate on the floor. She knelt down and took out her little mirror. "I haven't even been able to aim at all!" she thought, frustration taking over her mind. "Why did I agree to do this? It's not like I'm gonna win!"
But Anna's voice echoed through her mind. "Do you really want to be labelled as a person that gives up?"
Susan ground her teeth. "No!" she murmured and stuck her arm from behind the corner, holding the mirror. Susan couldn't see Two in the reflection, so she pulled her arm back and stuck it out on her other side. There was still no sign of her enemy. But just as Susan was pulling the mirror back, she noticed something in the reflection. The sun was reflecting on something between the crates, like another mirror or something. It was… a scope! Before Susan could pull her hand back, green ink hit her mirror, smashing it to pieces. She cursed and pulled her hand back. "Now I have no idea where she is!" she thought. "At least I have cover."
But then, green ink landed right next to her. Susan jumped and almost ran out of cover but stopped before she could. That ink hadn't been fired in a straight line. It had come from above. Like rain. Right then, another puddle of ink landed not too far away from her. And then Susan realized what happened. Two was firing up into the sky and making gravity do the rest of the work, making ink rain on Susan. She was trying to pressure her out of her hiding place! Everywhere around her was covered in green ink, and Susan had to think fast. The timer read that there was two and a half minutes left. "I can't time this out, if I do, I'll definitely lose! Her aim is better than mine, and without cover, I'm finished! I have to splat her before the timer runs out!"
Multiple possibilities rushed through her mind, trying to find the one that didn't involve getting splatted. Suddenly, an idea struck her. She charged up her sniper and aimed it to her right. Then she pulled the trigger, creating a trail of ink across the floor. But Two had been anticipating this! As soon as the ink had spread over the ground, a trail of green ink cut across it, blocking the way. Susan only had a split second for this to work. She calculated the angle of the shot and then jumped out from her cover, aiming where she hoped Two to be. She could see a green hat between some boxes, and Two entered her sight. It was like the world slowed down around Susan, and she pulled the trigger, her aim set on Two. The ink flew through the air, straight between the boxes where Two knelt. And it went… right past her! It only missed by a few centimetres, just a little to the left and Two would've been splatted! "Damn it," Susan murmured, charged her charger again and started to slowly walk towards where Two was. Two had ducked out of sight, and Susan had to be careful if she didn't want to get splatted. Two could be anywhere. "At least I was able to get a shot at her."
Susan walked up to the boxes Two was a moment ago and darted her eyes in every direction. She couldn't have gone too far. Then Susan had a weird feeling. It washed over her out of nowhere. She felt like she was standing in a trap, or like someone was about to jump out, or like… she was being hunted. Almost instinctively, Susan turned to octo form, and right after she did so, she heard a trigger being pulled. Susan could feel the ink fly over her head, and when she landed on the floor, she started to swim out away, away from wherever Two was. But she hadn't even swam a few meters when the surface she was swimming on disappeared, and she fell down between the boxes. There had been a small gap between the boxes, and Susan hadn't seen it in her hurry to get away. When she landed on the floor, a feeling of claustrophobia washed over her. It was like the boxes were pushing her from all sides, and her breathing became unsteady. But before she had a chance to calm down, a shot of ink missed her by an inch, and Susan looked up. Two was standing where Susan had fallen down, and was aiming her charger down. The sound of Two's charger was louder than ever before, and Susan started to swim desperately between the boxes. The feeling of dread was starting to overtake her, and it was hard to focus. Susan's vision was blurry, and all she had in mind was to get out of there. She zigzagged through the gaps, and heard the shots from Two's charger behind her. It felt like she had been swimming for forever when she finally came into a space open enough for her to change back into kid form. Susan lay on the ground, her breathing heavy. She didn't care if she was still and an easy target. She was expecting Two to shoot her. But after lying there for fifteen seconds, nothing had happened. Susan turned to lay on her back so she could see what was above her. She was expecting Two to be standing above her, charger pointed at her. But there was no one there. "Did I lose her?" Susan thought and sat up. She was still dizzy, but sense was starting to return to her thoughts. Then, the music that was playing subsided and the tunes of Now and Never started playing. Usually, those tunes inspired her to do the best she could, to push back the enemy team and take the win. But this wasn't Turf War. Now, the tunes filled her with dread. "There's no way I can win without cover!" rushed through her mind as she climbed up to the top. "Cover is the only reason why I haven't been splatted already!"
When she reached the top, the first thing she saw was the timer. It read 45 seconds. Susan was starting to have a panic attack, and frantically looked around for Two. And there she was, standing with her back turned on another pile of boxes right next to hers. Susan's eyes widened. Her back was turned! Anna's voice echoed once again in her mind. "She never seems to check behind her. It's like she doesn't expect anyone to flank her. Remember that."
Susan took out her charger and charged it up, aiming it straight at Two's back. Two didn't seem to notice. Susan's heart was racing and she put her finger on the trigger. Thirty seconds left. Susan took a deep breath and pulled the trigger.
But it didn't move. Susan pulled again, but it still didn't budge. Susan looked down at her charger and was horrorstruck. When her charger had crashed on the floor, the trigger had been at a weird angle. Yet it had seemed alright, and Susan hadn't given it a second thought, since Two had started to hunt her down. But now she could see that the trigger had moved way out of position, and was now stuck! Susan frantically started to push the trigger back into place, but it was too late. Before she had been able to fix the trigger, Two had dashed to the side, while also turning around, starting to aim where Susan stood. Susan ducked behind cover, and Two's shot flew overhead. Her trigger clicked back into place, but now Susan and Two were both behind cover. All Two had to do now was to wait the timer out! Twenty seconds left. Susan peeked from behind her cover, and fired towards Two, who ducked down, before rising back up again and returning fire. "There's no way I can win like this!" rushed through Susan's mind as Two's shots swished over her. Then, Anna's voice echoed once more. "You are the sniper of Calamari Street, you're the Bane of those unwary! Are you really going to lose?!"
Susan opened her eyes again. "No!" she murmured. A plan was forming in her mind. Ten seconds left. The world slowed down around her. Susan jumped out from behind her cover, firing ink straight at Two, who had to duck out of the way. Nine seconds left. While Two was rising back up again, Susan shot a small trail of ink, long enough to get to the edge of the pile. Eight seconds left. Susan turned to octo form, and started to swim towards the edge. Seven seconds. Susan could see Two's eyes dart from side to side, looking for her. Six seconds. Two noticed Susan swimming towards her, and started to aim down her sight. Five seconds. Susan made it to the edge of the pile, and jumped off. Four. Susan soared through the air, and started to turn back into octo form. The sound of a trigger being pulled echoed through her mind. Three. Two's shot missed Susan by an inch, and she was now behind Two, hanging upside down in the air. Two. Susan aimed her charger at Two, the dot right on Two's chest. One. Susan took a deep breath and pulled the trigger.
