Chapter 9 Leaving

Dwalin woke me up the next morning. I stretched and yawned as Bofur gave me a plate of food to eat quick. I ate it quick and washed it as the dwarves packed up and went out to get the ponies Gandalf had for us waiting. I pulled my coat on and my weapons.

"Ready lass." Dwalin said as Fili and Kili joined us.

"Ready." I said as I followed him out with Fili and Kili behind me. I smile as I see ponies.

"You have this one." Kili said, leading a white one over.

"Thank you." I said. I strap my bag onto the pony as the dwarves got ready to go. I get on the pony as the dwarves got ready to go.

"Uncle. What about Bilbo?" Fili called as him and Kili rode up next to me.

"He's not coming. If he is, he will catch up." Thorin said. I shook my head at him.

"Move out." Dwalin called. I rode behind dwalin with Fili behind me as we rode. Dwarves started making bets if Bilbo would show up or not. Dwarves and their betting.

"What ye bet lass?" Dwalin said.

"I bet 10 coins he will show up." I said, sending him a smile. Dwalin grunted in agreement. I held back to talk to Fili and Kili. Dwarves were complaining of it being a waste of time. Yelling came from behind and we pulled our ponies to a stop. I turn my pony and see Bilbo.

"I signed it." Bilbo said, handing the contract over to Balin. Gandalf smiles at Bilbo as Balin looks over the signature.

"Everything appears to be in order. Welcome, Master Baggins, to the Company of Thorin Oakenshield." Balin said. The dwarves and I cheer. Thorin looked away not impressed.

"Give him a pony." Thorin said, moving us forward. Fili and Kili rode ahead as Bilbo talks. I rode behind them, watching in amusement.

"No, no, no, no, that-that won't be neccessary, thank you, but I'm sure I can keep up on foot. I've done my fair share of walking holidays, you know. I even got as far as Frogmorton once." Bilbo said. He yelped as Fili and Kili grabbed him and lifted him up, putting him on a pony. I chuckled as Bilbo looked uncomfortable. I rode up towards Dwalin as dwarves passed around bags of gold.

"Dwalin. You owe me." I said. Balin chuckled. Dwalin tossed a sack back and I caught it. I put it in my bag.

"Your becoming more of a dwarf then you realize, lass." Balin said. I send him a playful smirk.

"No, no, wait, wait, stop! We have to turn around." Bilbo called. We stopped and turned to look at Bilbo. Gandalf was riding with Bilbo.

"What on earth is the matter?" Gandalf asked as dwarves complain about stopping.

"I forgot my hankerchief." Bilbo said. I giggled.

"Here." Bofur said. He tore a strip of cloth from his clothing and tosses it to Bilbo. "Use this." Dwarves laugh as Bilbo looks at the rag in disgust.

"Move on." Thorin said. We rode and talked. Bilbo rode up to me.

"Your not a dwarf. What are you?" Bilbo asked.

"I'm actually a fairy, Master Baggins. My family and people were slaughtered by the orcs and the dwarves took me in. Gandalf requested that I join because of my powers." I said. Bilbo looked surprise.

"What are your powers?" Bilbo asked.

"I am the only one of my people that can control all the elements and can heal." I said.

"Mind if I ask what happened to your wings?" Bilbo asked.

"I lost them when my people were slaughters by the orcs. They were purple not white." I said.

"I'm sure they were beautiful and I am sorry to hear about yer people." Bilbo said. I smiled at him as we talked and I asked about the history of the hobbits.

We came to a cliff where we decided to camp for the night. I sat next to Fili as him and Kili poked the fire. Dwarves were snoring and Thorin fell asleep sitting up. Dwalin was already in his bed roll where mine was set up, but I couldn't sleep and joined the boys to read for a bit. I saw Bilbo get up and go by the ponies as Fili and Kili talked. A screech came out of no where and I reached for my sword.

"Easy. Sounds like they are not close." Fili said. Bilbo runs over to us.

"What was that?" Bilbo asked.

"Orcs." Kili said. I jump as another screech came and Thorin jerks awake at Kili's voice.

"Orcs?" Bilbo asked.

"Throat-cutters. There'll be dozens of them out there. The lowlands are crawling with them." Fili said.

"They strike in the wee small hours, when everyone's asleep. Quick and quiet, no screams, just lots of blood." Kili said. Bilbo looked scared and the brothers laugh. I push Fili into Kili making them laugh harder.

"You think that's funny?" We look up as Thorin approached us, looking at his Nephews. "You think a night raid by orcs is a joke? Especially when the lass that you consider a sister survived a night raid of orcs.

"We didn't mean anything by it." Kili said.

"No, you didn't. You know nothing of the world." Thorin said, walking off to the edge of the cliff and looks out over the valley. Balin walks over to us.

"Don't mind him, laddie. Thorin has more cause than most to hate orcs." Balin said. We looked at him. It was a story I haven't heard yet. "After the dragon took the Lonely Mountain. King Thror tried to reclaim the ancient dwarf kingdom of Moria. But our enemy had got there first. Moria had been taken by legions of Orcs lead by the most vile of all their race. Azog, the Defiler. The giant Gundabad Orc had sworn to wipe out the line of Durin." Balin said. I looked towards Thorin as Balin talked. "He bagan by beheading the King. Thrain, Thorin's father, was driven mad by grief. He went missing, taken prisoner or killed, we did not know. Defeat and death were upon us. That is when I saw him, a young dwarf prince facing down the Pale Orc. He stood alone against this terrible foe, his armor rent weilding nothing but an oaken branch as a shield." Dwarves were standing up and facing Thorin as Balin told the tale. "Azog learned that day that the line of Durin would not be so easily broken. Our forces rallied and drove the orcs back. Our enemy had been defeated. But there was no feast, no song, that night, for our dead were beyond the count of grief. We few had survived. And I thought to myself then, there is one who I could follow. There is one I could call King." Thorin turned to see all the dwarves standing looking at him. I was standing as well watching him. He nods and walks between them towards the fire.

"But the pale orc? What happened to him?" Bilbo asked.

"He slunk back into the hole whence he came. That filth died of his wounds long ago." Thorin said. Balin, Gandalf, and I shared looks. I knew he wasn't dead. He was the one that led the orcs on the raid against my people.

"Bed. We have an early start. I have first watch." Thorin ordered. Fili and I went to our beds which was next to each other. Kili was on Fili's other side and Dwalin was on my other. I looked up at the stars and smile tiredly. It had been awhile since I slept under the stars. I look at the fire as it was getting low. I flicked my finger and the fire grew to keep us warm. I smile as I rolled onto my side facing Dwalin and let sleep take me.

AN: I know I didn't reveal her powers till now. I apologize. The healing will be useful in the coming story. Last chapter for the night. I am tired.
