In theory, Team 7 made sense.
In theory, Team 7 was effective, their teamwork was spectacular, and they were war heroes to boot. The perfect Shinobi team.
In theory, at least.
oOo
It was around a year after the war. Things weren't perfect, but the nations were at peace, and things were somewhat okay.
Sasuke had left on another 'redemption journey' around ten months ago.
Kakashi had reluctantly taken the hat, but he was visibly happy, despite the overwhelming responsibilities that came with the job.
Sakura now ran the hospital, with Tsunade having retired, and frequented trips to the other villages to train their medics.
Naruto finally got some time off and decided to go through his parents' belongings. When he realized most of their stuff was enclosed within complicated seals within very complicated seals, the blonde dove headfirst into the art of Fuuinjutsu.
All in all, Team 7 was content with how things were.
But, like all Shinobi, they quickly grew bored of mundane life.
So, it was no surprise when Sakura and Naruto barged into Kakshi's office one day.
"Give us a mission," Naruto requested.
"Something high ranked," Sakura added.
Because the truth was, yes, these missions still existed.
Sine the five nations had united, and they were in the middle of the process of extending the alliance/trade to all the minor villages, ("Because we can't exclude people, dattebayo!") there had been a significant increase of rouge-nin organizations.
Before, if you wanted someone from Konoha assassinated but wanted to remain anonymous, you went to Iwa, and vice versa. Now, since they were allied … things were trickier. Hence, more rouge-nin.
Kakashi only shrugged. He was expecting this.
"Alright," He said. "I've got a mission for you."
"Really?!" Kakashi didn't agree easily to anything.
"Yes. But it's quite far away and the duration is estimated to be about a month. Sakura, can you leave the Hospital for that long?"
Sakura snorted. "Of course. My apprentices aren't babies anymore, they'll be fine without me."
He nodded. "I'll summon you in a couple of days, then. I'll debrief you when your third team member is present."
"Third team member?" Sakura wondered.
"Who is it?" Naruto asked.
Kakashi eye-smile. "Why," he practically chirped, no doubt enjoying his two student's confusion. "It'll be Sasuke, of course."
A beat.
Then, "WHAT?"
After the two managed to calm down (which, by the way, took quite some time), Naruto asked the golden question on everybody's minds.
"How did you manage to get Sasuke to come back?"
Kakashi only shrugged.
"I'll debrief you two when he gets back."
When it was certain Kakashi wasn't budging on this, Sakura and Naruto left his office, pouts adoring their faces.
oOo
The next few days couldn't go by fast enough.
When they were summoned to Kakashi's office, Naruto and Sakura already had their necessities sealed and packed. They were ready to go.
They got to his office in record time, (through the window, of course. Who uses doors these days?) and inside, they saw to their delight, was none other than Sasuke Uchiha, looking as if he hadn't left and leaning against the wall like a true bastard he was.
"TEME!" Naruto yelled.
"Dobe," Sasuke responded.
Naruto's grin widened.
"Sasuke-kun," Sakura greeted, smiling.
Sasuke blinked, and flashed her a quicksilver of a smile before turning to Kakashi, poker face back in place.
As Kakashi turned his full attention to his not-so-cute-genin-anymore team, he spoke.
"Your mission is an A, very possibly S rank. There is a reason, after all, to put you three together."
It was true. Why else would he need the three most renowned war heros?
"The mission is to go to the Uzushiogakure, and investigate it's the ruins. There is a high possibility that a mercenary group resides along Uzu's shores, but even without them, this mission could very quickly escalate.
"The people of Uzushio were feared, and rightfully so. They have developed barrier seals that block the byakugan, even the sharingan at all forms."
Sasuke's visible eye widened.
"The only doujutsu the Uzumaki did not have a barrier to counteract, was—"
"The Rinnegan," Naruto finished.
"Correct. And many of the seals require a blood sacrifice. Namely, the blood of the founding Uzumaki Clan head. And the only known Uzumaki from his line still alive is—"
"Naruto," Sakura finished.
"Yes, and please don't cut me off."
Three smirks.
A sigh.
"And if you must power any of the seals, have Sakura be the one to power them. Her chakra pool and control is on par with Mito Uzumaki, according to Tsunade."
Another round of nods.
"Good. If you find anything important, recover it, and bring it back. And be careful, you three." The last part was spoken with fondness and underlying concern.
"Don't worry, Sensei,"
"We're Team 7! Don't worry about us!"
"Hn."
Kakashi smiled, behind his mask. "Maa, get going, you three. One month, got it?"
"Yes sir!"
oOo
They had gotten to Uzu fairly quickly, and taken out the rouge-nin group within the first week. So far, pretty routine.
Investigating the seals, on the other hand, never failed to amuse.
There were barriers, ones that sucked out your chakra, Pocket dimension ones, everything.
Team 7 had lost count of how many times they powered a seal.
At the end of the month, many explosions and many scrolls and artifacts later, Team 7 was ready to return home.
After a day of travel, it was Sakura who noticed the first difference. They were in some random town, east of Konoha.
"Didn't I punch this mountain to smithereens months ago?" She asked.
Sasuke's brow furrowed.
"Let's ask around, the locals might know something."
So ask around they did.
"You haven't heard?" A middle aged baker asked. "Rumour has it the five Kage called a Summit. And right after Pein's attack on Konoha!"
Pein?
Immediately, they tensed. Something was undeniably, no doubt, very wrong.
Ducking into an alleyway, Sasuke spoke. "Ask Kurama."
Closing his eyes, Naruto did.
When he opened them, they were wide with surprise.
"Well?"
"You guys aren't going to like this, 'ttebayo."
"Tell us."
"We…"
"Spit it out, already."
"We might be in another dimension."
Silence.
"WHAT?" Sakura exclaimed.
"When?" Was immediately asked by Sasuke.
"Sometime around the summit."
Shocked silence filled the alley.
Then following this, Sasuke immediately opened a portal with his Rinnegan eye.
When the trio of ninja stepped through, hearts beating wildly, they halted as soon as they got to the other side.
Pushing down the nausea rising in his throat, Naruto finally toke in his surroundings. And when he did, he froze.
Sasuke and Sakura had frozen in their tracks as well.
And rightfully so, because right there, right in front of them, were none other than the Four Kages and Mifune, in the middle of a summit, in all their glory. Oh yeah. And the Danzo Bastard.
The Raikage's jaw dropped.
Gaara's eye twitched.
Sakura, ignoring the tension in the room, put her face in her hands, startling the other shinobi. "Kami above, why us?"
"Sensei is going to kill me," Naruto groaned.
Sasuke only sighed. What was there to say?
Sakura was right, Sasuke supposed.
Why us?
oOo
Because in reality, Team 7's missions were always hit or miss.
In reality, Team 7 was a slightly dysfunctional family that somehow gets themselves stuck in impossible situations, all the time.
Oh well. At least they somehow manage to get out of those situations.
Hopefully.
Probably.
