First Meeting
I don't own Harry Potter!
Lydia walked to the Room of Requirement, dragging her feet. Her mind racing with work. It was supposed to be the first meeting of Harry Potter's secret defense society tonight.
Having used the Room of Requirement before, for various reasons, she walked back and forth three times in front of the wall, thinking 'I need the meeting room for Harry Potter's defense classes.' Over and over. When she looked back at the wall after her third turn a door had appeared.
Lydia smirked and walked inside.
"Lydia!" Hermione was sitting on a cushion with a book "I'm so glad you made it. We were worried you wouldn't come."
Lydia smiled tightly, glancing at Ron who was glaring at her viciously.
"Yeah, at least we know you haven't sold us out to Umbridge yet. If she had, she wouldn't be here." Ron muttered.
"Leave her alone, Ron." Fred said, coming in behind Lydia "She wouldn't do that. Remember, she's in the Order."
Ron grunted but left Lydia alone. All the other members filed in slowly. Some stared at Lydia nervously, wondering why a Smart was in their midst. Lydia ignored them.
When everyone had finally arrived, Harry stood up and started the "class."
Hermione suggested that they needed a leader, Cho pointed out that Harry was the leader. Everyone voted and agreed. Then Hermione asked about a name. Ginny suggested Dumbledore's Army.
Lydia wasn't sure what Dumbledore would think of that.
Still, everyone agreed that the DA was a good name, so that's what Hermione wrote on top of the list with everyone's names. Harry finally got around to teaching, he suggested the disarming charm.
Lydia was left without a partner as nobody particularly wanted to pair up with a Smart. Harry offered to partner her and Lydia quickly disarmed him on her first try.
"Not bad, Lydia!" Fred shouted across the room.
"Show Harry how it's done." George chimed in.
Harry blushed "Nice job, Lydia. Hey, can you partner Ron and Hermione for a while, so I can help the others."
Lydia nodded and moved over to join Ron and Hermione in the corner. They practiced disarming each other for around half an hour before Harry blew a whistle bringing everyone to a stop.
"Great work, everyone." He complimented "Several people have asked for a example of a duel. So anyone up for a round?"
Ron put up his hand.
"Great, thanks Ron." Harry grinned "Anyone want to go up against Ron?"
"What about you, Smart?" Ron snarled.
Fred and George stepped in front of the petite blonde but she gently pushed her way through them and nodded.
"Okay then." Harry groaned internally, this wouldn't end well for Ron "Lydia, can you stand on that side, Ron, over here. Everyone move out of their way."
"Three sickles on Lydia." Fred whispered to his brother.
"Even I'm not dumb enough to take that bet. She's gonna kick Ronnie's arse." George chuckled.
Lydia and Ron stood opposite each other, wands out.
Ron was the first to strike "Confrigo!" He shouted.
Lydia waved her wand and nonverbally cast a shield charm.
Everyone around her gasped.
She sent a simple disarming charm at her opponent. Ron was not fast enough to block it and his wand went spinning out of his hand. Lydia then sent the impedimenta jinx and Ron found himself stuck in place, unable to go after his wand. The duel was over in less than ten seconds.
"Lydia wins!" Harry called.
"I want a rematch." Ron grumbled "She cheated."
"How did she cheat, Ron?" Hermione asked.
"She used nonverbal magic. We're not supposed to learn that until next year!" Ron shouted.
"Yeah, how did you learn nonverbal spells, Smart?" Dean Thomas asked.
Lydia shook her head violently and would not answer. She had learned nonverbal magic three years ago to avoid speaking. But she wasn't about to tell them that. Instead she turned around and marched out of the room.
"Using nonverbal spells isn't cheating, Ron." Harry pointed out "She's just using her skills to her advantage. That's what you're supposed to do in a duel."
"Yeah, you're just sore you lost." Fred said "Come on, Georgie, let's go find Lydia."
Fred and George followed Lydia out of the Room of Requirement. They started to walk back to Gryffindor Tower, peeking into classrooms and broom closets, looking for Lydia.
"Lydia?" George called softly.
"There!" Fred whispered, pointing as a wisp of blonde hair whipped around the corner "Lydia!"
The twins sped up and caught up to the fifth year girl. They noticed her tear streaked cheeks and red eyes.
"Hey," George spoke in a calming tone "Don't cry. It's alright. Ron's a prat anyway. Don't listen to him."
"Yeah, he's not worth your tears, Lyd." Fred agreed.
Lydia raised her eyebrows.
"Oh, the nickname?" Fred shrugged "I just thought it suited you. Do you like it?"
Lydia smiled and wiped her tearstained cheeks, she glanced behind the twins and noticed the figures of Gideon and Fabian Prewett, Molly Weasley's brothers and the twin's Uncles. They smiled and she grinned, giggling as they made silly faces at her.
Fred and George looked at each other, confused.
"Um, Lyd? What's so funny?" Fred asked.
"Oh, uh, nothing, just I've never had a nickname before." Lydia whispered "Or friends. It's...nice."
Fred and George exchanged a sad look before looping their arms through Lydia's.
"Well, now you have two friends." George smiled.
Lydia laughed and allowed the boys to take her back to the common room.
