Loosely based off of the song Common Sense by Joshus Bassett.
It was official. You were in love with your best friend: Shoto Todoroki. You were in love with the boy who was unbelievably horrible at expressing and accepting feelings. When you and Shoto hung out you always had people telling you guys that you made a cute couple. Each time it came up you were both quick to deny it saying you were just best friends. Until one day you weren't as quick to deny it. You realized your feelings had finally come to life and you were in fact in love with him.
The day started out like any other day. You and Shoto woke up early to train together. Your quirks complimented each other and you found that training with him made you a stronger hero. You were sparing like you usually did and the next thing you knew you were on top of him, pinning him to the ground. You had the biggest smirk on your face as you looked down at him. He lightly pushed a stray piece of hair behind your ear and gave you a small smile. You couldn't stop the small blush that spread to your cheeks as your stomach filled with butterflies.
"Wow, it took you long enough to beat me," he said with a small chuckle.
"It only took me so long because you cheat," you respond as you roll your eyes and quickly get off him. You offer your hand to help him up and for the short time your heart seems to beat a little faster.
"Again?" He asks as he looks at you with a small smirk.
You respond by shooting your quirk at him and that's how you spend the rest of your morning. When you get done training you make your way to your room and look up signs that you have a crush on someone and how to tell if you're in love with someone. You spend the rest of the weekend locked in your bedroom making a pros and cons list of your newfound feelings. You ignore all of Shoto's texts and calls as you let your feelings sink in.
I love him. I'm in love with him. How did this happen? When did this happen? I can't be in love with my best friend. I just can't. Maybe it's better if I just ignore him and see if they go away? Yeah that's what I'll do.
Your mind wanders to him and you can't help but think about all of your memories. Shoto has been your best friend since you were in diapers. You were attached at the hip, there for him through everything. All the ups and downs. You were there. When his mom poured the hot water on his face you were there. Even when she left and he became distant you never gave up on him. He was grateful for that and when he was ready he finally opened up to you. What he didn't expect was for you to go over to his house to yell at his father. Shoto had never seen that side of you and you hoped he never would again. When you got mad it was more of a blind rage, where you don't quite remember what you say or do. That was the day when you two became inseparable.
Monday morning came quicker than you expected and you just hoped that you could avoid Shoto. You didn't want to accept the feelings that came up. You just wanted to look at Shoto like you used to. You woke up late and had hoped that meant you wouldn't run into him. Unfortunately, luck wasn't on your side. As soon as you opened the door and rushed out of your door you ran right into Shoto. He caught you before you could fall over and you quickly stepped out of his grasp.
"Hey are you okay?" He asks as he looks you over with his eyes.
"Just running late Sho!" You say as you turn to run down the hall, leaving him standing there looking after your disappearing figure.
Somehow, a week had passed and you had avoided being alone with Shoto. You trained with Izuku and hung out with Ochaco and the rest of the girls to keep your distance. You weren't texting him as much and you ignored all his calls. He obviously knew something was up and by Friday afternoon he finally confronted you.
You were laying in bed watching Netflix when there was a soft knock on the door. You slowly got up and answered it already knowing who was going to be behind the door. You opened the door and Shoto stormed in not waiting for you to invite him in.
"What did I do YN? You've ignored me all week and this isn't like you. What happened?" He asked as he paced around your room, trying to keep his voice quiet and calm.
You quietly shut the door, leaning your back against the wood as you watched Shoto pace.
"Nothing Sho."
"It's not nothing! You haven't talked to me in over a week. Why are you ignoring me?"
"I'm not Shoto! You must be imagining it."
"That's bullshit and you know it! We haven't gone this long without talking since the incident."
"I'm sorry Shoto, but I can't tell you." You whisper, "It would ruin everything."
"Nothing could ruin our friendship YN. Nothing."
You look up at him and give him a shy smile, "Promise?"
"I promise."
You take a deep breath before pushing yourself off the door, and make your way over to him. He looks at you quizzically but doesn't move as you get closer to him. You stand in front of him and gently put your hands on the sides of his face, lightly pressing your lips onto his.
"I'm in love with you Sho," you whisper once you pull away from him.
Before either of you can say anything there's a knock on your door. You quickly turn around and make your way to the door, opening it roughly to see who could possibly be interrupting this moment. You were surprised to see Momo on the other side.
"Oh hi YN! I'm looking for Shoto." She says with a smile.
You move to the side and reveal him to her.
"Ahh there you are! Are you ready for our date?"
You didn't think your heart could break as quickly as it did. The smile on your face quickly faded as you looked between the two of them. Your eyes finally landed on Shoto and you just nodded to yourself before letting out a laugh.
"He was actually just leaving."
"YN wait." Shoto started but then stopped when he saw the look on your face. It was the same look you had given his father when you went off on him.
"Have fun on your date!" You respond as you grab Shoto by the arm and push him out of your room, slamming the door shut in the process. You crawled back into bed and spent the rest of the night in tears.
You woke up with puffy red eyes and tears staining your face. You couldn't believe how stupid you had been to actually kiss him and tell him you were in love with him. He hadn't even kissed you back you realized. Somehow, that just broke your heart even more. You stayed curled up in your room for the rest of the weekend shutting your phone off and ignoring all the knocks that came and went from your door. Your friends tried to get you to come out of your room to get you to open up to them, but you just didn't have it in you. You emailed your teachers and told them you weren't feeling the best and got excused from Monday's classes. You hated hiding from your problems, but you knew if you saw either of them you would either say something you would regret or burst into tears.
It was 9 in the morning when there was a loud knock on your door. You ignored it and continued to stare at your ceiling. The knocking didn't slow down or stop, so you finally got up and yanked the door open only to find Shoto staring back at you. You slammed the door as fast as you could and walked back to your bed, but his arm stopped it just in time. He followed you inside and gently shut the door behind him. You dropped onto your bed and focused your gaze back on your ceiling.
"Can we talk please?" Shoto asked after a few minutes of silence.
"How was your date Todoroki?" You asked knowing using his last name would make him mad.
"YN, please. Just let me explain."
"I don't want to hear it! Please just leave." You said as you looked over to glare at him.
"No! I'm not leaving until we fix things between us!" Shoto yelled as he ran his fingers through his hair.
"There's nothing to fix. Just forget what happened," you replied as a silent tear fell from your eyes.
"I can't," he whispered as he looked at you with a pleading look.
You looked over at him and couldn't stop the tears from falling down your cheeks and he hadn't even said anything yet.
"Ever since you kissed me I haven't been able to get you out of my head." He moves to sit beside you on the bed, never taking his eyes off of you. "I've been in love with you since we were little kids. Ever since you stood up to my dick of a dad." He said with a laugh before continuing, "I didn't think you could ever feel the same way about me. I know I'm not the easiest person to get along with or to love. I'm not the best at expressing my feelings. Momo and I didn't go on a date, and I don't know why she said we were. We were just studying for a project we have together. The only girl I want to date is you." He reached over and placed his hand on top of yours giving you a shy smile in the process as his other hand wiped away the tears that still fell.
"Do you really mean that Sho?"
"Every word."
He leans over and presses his lips to yours, a smile quickly forming on your lips in the process. You spend the rest of the day in each other's arms exchanging soft kisses.
