As I was walking back out to my car, I sent Holly a message telling her that I won't be needing her for a while and that I sent Stefanie to the Salvatore Boarding School. I also told her that I would compensate her for the lose of money until she could find another job. After that I left a voicemail for Amy at the clinic to let her know that I would be taking some time off and to have Dr. Victor Reed from Mystic Falls Hospital cover for me until I got back. Once I got all my ducks in a row, I went back into my contacts to call Matt but before I could click on him, his picture was already flashing up on my screen. I answered it as I climbed into my car and began to make my way off the school grounds.
"I was just two seconds away from calling you." I said.
"Do you want to explain to me why Damon's bar is trashed and there's blood in his office?" Matt demanded on the other line.
"Hence why I was about to call you. I need your help, Matt. I'll explain everything once I see you."
"Where are you, Elena?"
"Just dropped Stefanie off at the boarding school. Are you still at the bar?"
"Yes."
"I'll be there in fifteen minutes." I hung up and gripped the steering wheel in both hands as I made my way back through town and went back to the bar. There were a couple of police cruisers outside the bar, so I parallel parked across the street and walked over. Matt was waiting for me in the doorway of the bar. His blonde hair was thinning, and his blue eyes were dull like a worn paint on a wall. He waved to the other officers to let me pass and I walked up to him. He didn't even return my smile as I joined his side. I didn't expect him to. The old Matt, the Matt that I grew up with, the Matt that I dated, was long gone. He died when his fiancée was killed. The Matt that stood before me now was a complete stranger to me. He also despised vampires but would tolerate them up to a certain point.
"I need your help finding some information on a guy." I told Matt as I watched the forensic team make their way in and out of the back office. Matt looked at me in astonishment as if I just asked him to chop off his right arm.
"You need my help?" He snapped at me. "How about you help me first and tell me what the hell happened here, Elena." I glared at him, my brown eyes hard as stone.
"Gee, Matt, I would love to tell you everything if only I knew what the hell did happen here. I don't know, Matt. I have one lead and I need your help to follow it." Matt stared at me for a moment longer before sighing heavily and gesturing me to follow him as he walked to his car away from the prying ears of his deputies.
"Just tell me everything you know, and we'll go from there." I sighed and started from the beginning becoming irritated that this felt like the hundredth time today that I explained that my husband was missing. Matt listened to me without any interruptions until I was finished.
"So, what do you know about this bartender?"
"Alec Cooper. Damon hired him a few months ago. He's early twenties, just started college for psychology or something like. Seemed like a decent human being. He knows about vampires, so I gave him a vervain watch when he first started working here. What I didn't know was that he was also drinking vervain. He pretended to be compelled when I was talking to him earlier." Matt walked to the driver's side of the car and got in, leaving the door open as I followed him around. He opened his laptop and typed in Alec's name and pulled up his track record. "Did Damon do a background check on this guy before he hired him?" I leaned against the side of his car and gave Matt a really? look.
"We're vampires, Matt. We don't need background checks. A human gives us a problem, we deal with it."
"And by dealing with it, you mean by killing them?" Not caring who was watching, I flashed my black eyes and fangs at him for a quick second.
"Just because we're vampires, Matt, does not mean that we are all killers. Remember that before you waste any more of my time making accusations about my kind when you should be helping me find my husband." Matt turned back to his laptop.
"Originally from Dayton, Ohio. Says that he was in and out of juvie since his was fifteen years old. Got into some trouble with a gang in Cincinnati when he was eighteen and moved here just a few months ago to start psychology classes at Whitmore."
"Does it say what he went to juvie for?" Matt shook his head.
"No. Those records are sealed. He's obviously up to something. Why flee if he had nothing to hide?"
"That's what I would like to know. What about any social media?" Matt bent over his laptop again and pulled up several different social media sites. I leaned into his car to get a better look at the screen. He scrolled through some photos on Facebook and Twitter and Instagram. Most of them from the past couple of months and at parties on Whitmore College campus. He seemed pretty popular at school. Always had a group of friends around him. We went through about a dozen of them before one of the photos caught my eye. "Wait. Go back." Matt clicked back a picture and I leaned in closer at the photo. It was a picture of Alec and a group of friends at what looked to be a bar just off campus. A popular place college students. But my attention wasn't drawn to where they were but rather who Alec had his arm around. "Oh, my God." Matt glanced over his shoulder at me and back at the screen.
"What?"
"That's Holly Dart. She's Stefanie's nanny. Or at least was until I sent Stefanie to the boarding school. She's a vampire, but what is she doing with Alec who's human?"
"Coincidence?" I pursed my lip.
"Maybe. When was this picture dated?"
"Um…back in December."
"A month before I hired Holly and Damon hired Alec." My brows furrowed as the pit in my stomach grew hollower. "Maybe there just good friends and moved here together despite one of them being a vampire and the other a human." Then, something in the photo caught my eye and my heart jumped into my throat as I reached over Matt so I could zoom in on the picture to Holly and Alec's hands. And my heart dropped to my stomach like a stone in a pool of water when I saw what was on their ring fingers. Each of them had a silver ring with a green background and a chrome heart with a sword down through the middle of it embedded in the middle. I've seen that symbol before. "Oh, my God." Matt quickly looked between me and the screen again, trying to figure out what I just did discovered. My heart pounded in my chest and stung like I've just been staked. It couldn't be.
"Elena, what is it?" My breath came out in pants as my heart rate kept speeding up.
"I know who took Damon." Matt looked at me with his brows raised, waiting for me to tell him who I just figured out. My eyes never left the rings that were taunting me in the pictures. "St. Augustine. The St. Augustine Society is back, Matt. And now they have Damon."
