Digimon: The End
A Digimon Fanfic
Contains character death, but with a happy ending.
Tai Kamiya was dying...and he was still so, so young...
The former leader of the Digidestined had thought that he would die in battle, saving the universe.
If he survived that, he would probably die in an accident.
And if he survived THAT, he would die an old man in a hospital bed, surrounded by his friends and family...

It had started, several months before, when he, Daisuke, Cody, TK, Kari, Sora, Ken, Izzy, Matt, and Mimi returned to the Digital World for a special mission with their Digimon friends. MaloMyotismon had returned from death, but now he was named UltraMyotismon, and was far more powerful then ever. The Digimon had summoned the Digidestined to fight him.
The battle caused massive destruction, with the entire Digital World being annihilated with the Cosmic Destruction move.
As a result, the Digimon partners of the Digidestined were now the last Digimon left, and even they only survived because they were teleported to the real world...
Digimon can only come back from the dead when they're in the Digital World...And there was no Digital World left.
In the end, all of the Digimon underwent ultimate Digivolution, and combined their energy into a single attack...
They fired it at the villain, destroying him once and for all. Myotismon was gone forever.
But at a horrible price...
Tai and Kari had been protected by Agumon summoning a shield to protect the two siblings from a rain of giant fireballs hurled at them. But making the shield had drained his life energy, to the point where at the end of it all...he...he...died.
The yellow dinosaur said his last words, "Thank you...for being...my friends...", and then disappeared, forever, causing Kari to start crying.
Tai comforted his sister, and called for his friends, the other kids and their Digimon...but no response came.
And when the dust cleared...they saw the true cost of this final battle.
Daisuke and Veemon were the first to die, both annihilated by Ultramyotismon's Death Fire which completely destroyed their bodies. Daisuke's final words were "You'll NEVER win, monster!" He was defiant - to the bitter end.
Matt and Gabumon were next. Gabumon had been sliced by a Doom Sword attack, and his body was cut in half. Matt, yelling in pain and rage at the death of his partner, attacked UltraMyotismon head on, and punched him in his face.
But the fiend retaliated by summoning a Burning Sword, and he stabbed - no - IMPALED him through his chest and out his back.
As his internal organs liquefied, Matt choked out "G-Gabumon...I'll b-be with you soon...buddy.." before falling limp for the last time.
Next were Cody and Armadillomon, both evaporated by another beam which disintegrated them both, as they embraced...
"It was nice...knowing you..." Those were Cody's last words.
Sora and Biyomon died next. UltraMyotismon used Darkness Bomb on Biyomon, killing him instantly.
As for Sora, she was driven mad by her friends dying around her, and grabbed a sharp stick.
She plunged it into her own stomach.
As she bled out, her final words were "I-I'm sorry...I couldn't protect you...I love you...Matt..."
Joe and Izzy were blasted through the heart...and they...bled out too..
But in their final moments of life...Joe used his last bit of strength...and grabbed Izzy's hand.
"I love you...Izzy..."
"I...l-love you too...Joe..."
Mimi was impaled through the heart by a sharp rock thrown at her...
"Goodbye...guys...it was nice...going on adventures...with you..."
As she said that, her body gave in to death, and her cowgirl hat fell off her head, and floated to the ground.
Her sunglasses also fell to the ground and shattered.
Yolei was crushed by a rock...her back was broken...when Tai and Kari found her, with her glasses smashed...she muttered "Good...you...you're safe..." and took her last breath right then and there.
Wormmon died the second and final time by jumping in front of Ken, trying to block an attack from UltraMyotismon...
But it was all for nothing...as Ken collapsed soon after - with a massive hole where his chest used to be...
He caressed the dead Wormmon, understanding that he tried his best..."Don't be sad...I c-cherish every moment we had together...even when I was a-bad person, you were always there for me...s-so thank y-you, Wormmon"
Wormmon gasped out his final words. "Y-you know I am your p-partner, and...will always...be there...for you..."
Ken's last words before he slipped away as well were "Brother...I've missed you...I'm coming."
Referring, of course, to his dead brother, Sam.
And to Kari's grief...TK jumped in front of her as UltraMyotismon blasted a hole through him, narrowly missing Kari.
After UltraMyotismon's death, she and Tai comforted the dying TK...as he coughed his last words.
"Tai...thank you for being with me for all these battles...and Kari?"
"Y-yes?"
"I-I love you!"
And with that, Tai and Kari became the last two Digidestined.
They returned to normal life, as best as they could, as their friend's families held funerals, and mourned the loss of so many young lives. Neither of them smiled anymore. Tai now locked himself in his room when he wasn't at school, and Kari...
The poor girl was traumatised, yeah, they both were, no one should have to go through what they went through at such a young, tender, innocent age, but Kari was especially scarred. She spent most of her time depressed and burst into tears whenever she thought of one of her dead friends-which was a lot of the time...
And then...one day...at class...she started to cough up her own blood, and collapsed.
Tai was there, in complete and utter shock, when it happened.
"NOOO!"
Kari was sent to the hospital, where her brother and parents received the worst possible news.
The disease that had hospitalised her in the past had returned...and it had progressed too quickly for doctors to treat or cure.
For six months, she barely held on to life, being comatose the entire time...
And on her final day, after their parents said their goodbyes...Tai was with his dying sister...he couldn't keep his tears in any longer.
"Kari, PLEASE! Y-you can't die! I have already lost all my other friends and our Digimon, I can't lose my SISTER!" He said, sobbing.
Then Kari stirred weakly. She opened her eyes, and reached out, pulling Tai closer.
"T-t-Tai?"
"Yes, s-sis, I'm here?"
"I-I-i love you."
"I love you too, Hikari. Very much."
Kari smiled upon hearing this. And then her eyes closed, and her hand fell limp.
The heart monitor that she was connected to uttered a single long beep.
Hikari Kamiya...was gone.
"No! NO! NO! NO! C-COME BACK! PLEASE COME BACK! PLEASE COME BAAAAACCCKKK!"
Tai screamed, crying, as he tried to rouse Kari back to life.
The hour after her death, Tai told his parents the truth about those dead children, and how they were all connected.
He told them everything...
The Summer Camp...
The Digivices...
The Digimon...
The life and death adventures...
The struggles they faced...
Everything...
His parents...went berserk.
His mother slapped him on the cheek-for the second time. The first was the previous time Kari was fatally sick, when Dan wanted to take her to the playground, when she collapsed and was rushed to hospital.
At least that time...Kari lived another day..
But not this time...
"HOW DARE YOU SEND THOSE POOR CHILDREN TO THEIR DEATHS!" Shouted his mom.
Dad wasn't any better.
"THESE POOR KIDS ARE DEAD BECAUSE OF YOUR "GAME!" YOU'RE GROUNDED FOR LIFE, TAI!" He snapped.
That was the last time he ever talked to his parents.
No matter how many times he tried to apologise, they ignored him, and then neglected him.
He ran away from home in despair.
He tried to survive on the streets in the winter snow...
And one day, the number of surviving Digidestined went from one...to zero.
Tai lay on his back in an alley...alone in the dark of night.
His clothes were ripped and filthy, his body was covered in cuts and bruises...and he was in the final stages of hypothermia.
Tai thought about his life...his experiences...the Digimon...his friends...Sora, Mimi, Ken, TK, Yolei, Izzy, Joe, Matt, Cody...
And about Kari...his sister...
He gasped...
"I'm sorry...everyone... I just...wish...I could...see...you...again..."
With that...Tai Kamiya...
The leader of the Digidestined...
The child of courage...
The last Digidestined...
Passed on...
And then, after his eyes closed for the final time to the night sky...they opened to bright sunlight. "Huh?"
Tai sat up off the ground, and he surveyed his surroundings. He was no longer in a cold, dirty, snowy alleyway. Instead, he was in a massive field filled with soft green grass, flowers of all shapes and sizes, a number of tall trees...and a massive castle in his vicinity...
"How is this possibl-" Tai was interrupted as a form tackled him and threw him to the ground...
"Hehehe! I've missed you!" said the person in a familiar voice...an impossible voices...
Tai saw a little girl with brown hair standing over him...and recognised who she was.
"KARI!" said Tai, now elated beyond belief. His sis, who he had seen die in bed at the hospital, was standing right there in front of him. No signs of any of the ailments that she had had in her life showed themselves.
"BRO!" Kai shouted back. The two siblings hugged each other, smiling, with tears coming out of their eyes.
"AGUMON!" Said another voice, and Agumon himself jumped from the tree the kids were under, trying to join in the hug...only to fall into a pile of leaves...and just then, Mimi, her cowgirl hat back on her head and her sunglasses once again intact, jumped out from the pile of leaves and went "Boo."
"Ahhhh!" Agumon screamed and ran around until he was dizzy! Wormmon was sleeping nearby on a rock, not taking much notice..
Tai then felt someone else playfully tag him. He turned around to find Sora, with a broad smile on her face. He then hugged her.
"Hey, hey hey!" She giggled in response as she pushed him back. " Wormmon woke up. And that "rock" he was on got up from his crouching position, revealing Ken. He then grabbed Wormmon and cuddled into him." Sam, Ken's brother, was reading a science book nearby.
As Kari and Tai hugged, Kari felt someone else hugging her back, and saw that it was TK.
"Kari! Good to see that your bro's finally here."
Armadillomon and Biyomon ran out of the leaf pile, followed by a frantic Cody, and Matt followed suit with Gabumon.
Finally, Tai stepped backwards in surprise, only to bump into someone who made a scary face. He jumped back in fright, and then laughed at Daisuke and Veemon, who both laughed back at him.
"We've missed you!" Cody said.
"We've been waiting for you." Matt said.
"We promised that we would see each other again!" Ken said.
"Welcome home!" Joe and Izzy said.
"We've missed you!" Said Yolei and Mimi.
Tai was at a loss for words.
"I-I-I-I'VE MISSED YOU TOO!" He said.
"WELCOME BACK TAI!" The other kids and Digimon said in unison, as they got into a group hug. All of them smiled, with tears of happiness trickling down their faces.
Tai had gotten his final wish after all...
The Digidestined were back together again.
And as they hugged, the ghosts of 2 fallen allies watched the happy scene.
"Thank you, Digidestined, for everything." Wizardmon said.
"May you rest in peace." Said Leomon.
