Forward: Loose continuation of my other Itazura fanfic, "From Crushes to First Loves". Upon discovery that Yuuki and Konomi has not yet had their first "official" date since getting together six months prior, Kotoko made it her goal to help them progress further in that regard. Hence, she and the other mastermind of the Irie Household, aka her mother-in-law, was about to hatch an ultimate plan to get Yuuki to grow a romantic pair and ask his waiting girlfriend Konomi out on a formal date. But as we all know… such plans never seem to go the way they want, or do they? Characters: Irie Kotoko, Irie Naoki, Irie Kotomi, Irie Yuuki, Sawaga Konomi

Disclaimer: I do not own Itazura na Kiss or any of its characters. This was written for entertainment purposes only. Italicized font is for character's thought process and for occasional emphasis.

For first time readers of my fanfics: I partly followed the relationship timeline for Yuuki and Konomi is based on my previous fanfics "Crushes" and "From Crushes to First Love" instead of the live action drama, although some details align (but you don't necessarily need to read the previously mentioned fanfics to understand what is going on here) Kotoko and Naoki's relationship follows the live action.

Young mom and infamous nurse, Irie Kotoko was putting on the finishing touches of her extravagant get-up, while excitedly humming, when the doorbell rang, interrupting her little daydream of her romantic night soon to unfold. With a skip in her step she hurried to open the door and beamed at the person at the doorway.

"Konomi-chan, come in, come in! Thank you again for agreeing to watch Kotomi for the night. I don't know how I could repay you; she can be quite the handful for a two almost three year old."

"Kotoko-neesan, it's my pleasure. I love spending time with Kotomi-chan. And besides, it is rare that you and Naoki-san have the same night off; of course the two of you should use it to spend some quality romantic time together. You both deserve it!" **

"Thank you! I was elated when Irie-kun suggested we go on a date after we found out about our schedule. Come to think of it, it's the first time he formally asked me on a date! I wonder what he has planned."

"Eh?! The first time!? But you two have been married for 8 to 9 years."

"Well, for the few dates that we have been on, I was the one who pushed for it to happen. There were also a couple times when Okaa-san set us up. On the second though, I don't know if it counts, but I guess our very first 'date' might have been proposed by Irie-kun."**

"Might?"

"Well it started with him going on a date with Mastsumoto-san…"

"Huh? Was it a double date?"

"Umm more like, it was their date. Sudo-senpai and I tailed them throughout. At some point, I could not bear to watch anymore and decided to go home, but then, I bumped into a really mean dude and caused him to spill his drink on his expensive shirt. He demanded I go with him to discuss a payment plan – one using my body. I was so scared then, but it turned out that Irie-kun knew we were following him the ENTIRE time and rescued me by fleeing the scene while holding my hand, leaving Mastsumoto-san to Sudo-senpai. After we ran a safe distance away, he asked me if I wanted to go someplace. Which I agreed to immediately of course! But my clothes were ruined since I fell as we ran before, leaving us with limited date spot options. Being the brilliant problem solver he is, Irie-kun brought me to the viewpoint of Rainbow Bridge while the sun was setting, bought us the most fancy, delicious meal I've ever eaten, and in that romantic mood he confessed to me! It was pretty much a proposal now that I think about it."

"Wow, Naoki-san is so romantic! You are so lucky, Kotoko-oneesan."**

"Heeeh… was that how our first 'date' went? Why do I remember some significant details quite differently?"

"Irie-kun! How long have you been standing there? Wait, I thought we were meeting at the café down the street!?"

"Look at the time, Baka! I was at the cafe for at least 30 minutes. I figured you probably got caught up talking to Konomi-chan and lost track of time, so decided to come get you. Turns out I was right."**

"Hehe, gomen. But you could have just called, Irie-kun."**

"I did. At least TEN times. Knowing you, your phone is probably lying around randomly, somewhere odd in this house, on silent."

"Ah! I don't remember where I put it. Irie-kun, help me find it please."

"Did you check the bathroom? And what is that smell… Kotoko! You left your curling iron plugged in again! Takku, how many times do I have to tell you to unplug it right after you set it down! You might end up burning our house down one of these days. Good thing Kotomi is currently out at the market with Otou-san."**

"A-re? I thought I put it away!? Ah! I answered the door for Konomi-chan before I was done re-curling the ends of my hair!" **

Sighing, Irie Naoki made his way to the kitchen for some much needed tea to calm his nerves, and to make a phone call that would later save his night. I've underestimated Kotoko's clumsy, forgetful self, yet again. She sure has a way for making me –a genius with an IQ of 200 –feel like I've set some new record of dumbness, no matter how many years I have known her. And although these thoughts plague his mind, Naoki wouldn't have life any other way, he also mused; as he watched his frustratingly adorable wife quickly settle into yet another animated conversation with Konomi-chan from her previous mini-manic rummaging around in the bathroom, her quest of finding her cellphone long forgotten; leaving him alone in continuing said task: a super simple feat for the 11 year and counting "Kotoko-mess fixer-upper" veteran, he might add.

"So Konomi, speaking of dates, how are you and Yuuki progressing?"

"Ummm about that… ever since we became official after graduation… nothing has happened. I mean before we got together, we would study together at the library. We hung out a couple times after school, like to a movie he wanted to watch, or stopped by a café or cute shop I forced him into I guess, Ah! There were also the times we shopped for Kotomi's birthday gift at the department store. But I don't know if they count as dates… Yuuki-kun certainly never said "let's go on a date" or called our outings "dates" per say."

"Mou! It has already been around half a year since your high school graduation! What is Yuuki thinking!? Dame! Konomi-chan, we need to do something about it! I know! Let's secretly drop hints and create the perfect situation for him to ask you on an official date! Yes, we will call it 'Operation: Official First Date!' I have to let Okaa-san in on the plan too, since she is usually the mastermind for all our romantic operations. I need my phone. Mmmh, where did I put it?"**

"Ko-to-ko. I know that look. What are you scheming now? Whatever it is, it can't be good. Haven't you learned anything from our past, when Ofukuro would try to push us to go on dates? Her meddlesome plans just had the opposite effect. Even on the dates she successfully trapped us in, I was irritated a large half of the time, which didn't make you very happy either." Naoki handed a now very determined Kotoko her phone reluctantly, knowing his heeding wouldn't stop her from wreaking havoc on Yuuki's newly spouted love life in any way, shape, or form. **

"Thank you Irie-kun! You are a life saver!" She blew him a characteristic kiss and proceed to call the storm-bringing "Irie-ke cupid club" founder, his mother, Irie Noriko. **

Looks like our long awaited date is over before it even began… Too bad, she would have loved the surprise I had for her. This is very Kotoko-like as well, always missing the mark in the most important times. And to think people say I'm the unromantic one. Naoki internally grieved, before he sat down on the sofa near his densely plotting spouse, pulling out a book to read while keeping tabs on Kotoko's grand plans to get Konomi a "real" date, certain that this intel will come in handy in the near future, when he would be the one designated to clean up whatever mess they'd make, or in the least, smooth out any snags in the plan they'd come across.

"First off, Konomi-chan. Make sure you don't jump the gun and end up asking Yuuki on the date yourself. We want to be subtle. From my experience with Irie-kun, asking strait out backfires and the date would never go as planned."

"But how do we do that without being direct? Kotoko-nee san, how did you hint at a date with Naoki-san."

"Umm I usually bring up other couples and how they went on a really nice date recently and then end with 'ii-naa~~' or 'urayamashidesu-ne', and if Irie-kun was feeling nice, we would end up going on a date sometime after that conversation." **

"Ah… but I don't know any couples in our school. None of my friends are actively dating,"

"Soudesuka. Wait, you have a perfect couple to use as reference!" **

"Huh?"

"Me and Irie-kun! We are going on a date tonight! AHH! OUR DATE!? IRIE-KUUUUN~ WE FORGOT TO GO ON OUR DATE! I have to call the restaurant and reschedule our reservation. But I wonder if we would get a spot again, we waited at least two months to get a table." Kotoko wailed, when the realization that it was way past the time her "dear husband" set to go out, finally dawned on her.

"You don't have to yell, dummy. I am right next to you. Quick correction: You forgot about our date. Aaaaha, how loved I feel with such a mnemonist wife. I already informed the restaurant, and they could squeeze us into the bar seats if we leave now." He teased his sheepish Kotoko in a voice heavy with tender sarcasm, before returning to his otherwise serious demeanor. **

"Honto!? What's a mnemonist? Never mind that, it must be something good! Irie-kun, DAISUKI~~" She then launched herself at the best hubby she could ever hope for, wrapping her arms snugly around his neck, the force of her sudden embrace knocking them both back into the couch." **

"Ko-to-ko, get off! Do you still want to go or what?"

"Iku! Iku! Sorry Konomi-chan, we will have to commence our Operation:OFD meeting tomorrow! Otou-san should be dropping off Kotomi soon, before heading to Aihara's. Thanks again for babysitting!" She quickly addressed the amused college freshman girl before prancing away to catch up to her beloved "Irie-kun" who was already halfway out the door, a somewhat impatient expression seeping through his handsome features. **

Like a the brief passing of blitz whirlwind, Konomi was left alone in the suddenly silent Irie residence, bracing herself for the next typhoon about to hit – one in the form of a tiny toddler who was an incredible mix of her father's smarts, her mother's endless hyperactive nature, and her paternal grandparents' mischievousness.

"TA - DAH- II –MA -SHU! KONWOMII NEE-CHA!" * A little girl with fluffy pigtails, bounded in at the speed of light wrapping her stubby little arms around Konomi's legs in a forceful hug.

"Chotto matte, Kotomi. You have to put on your indoor slippers; and 'no running' through the kitchen area remember?" A stern young lad quickly caught up to the squirmy toddler and attempted to put fuzzy pink bunny slippers on to her small but powerful kicking feet. **

"Okaeri Kotomi-chan~ Yuuki-kun! I didn't think you'd be home yet. What about club activities?" **

"They got canceled. I saw Oji-san on the way back and it seemed like he was in a hurry to go back to the restaurant and so I offered to bring Kotomi and the groceries to the house in his stead. I didn't hear that you'd be here though." **

"Did I not tell you? Kotoko-neesan and Naoki-san went on a date and asked me to babysit since they did not think anyone would be home around this time, with Oji-san and Oba-san back in her hometown until tomorrow morning. Speaking of dates… it must be nice… I wonder what our date would be like." The normally shy girl prodded with a hopeful tone of voice.

"Oi, Kotomi! Don't put the bag over your head. That's dangerous! Go play with your real toys. Sorry. What was it at the end that you said? I couldn't hear over the rustling bag."

"Ah nothing, never mind. I was just wondering how Kotoko-neesan and Naoki-san's date must be going right about now."

"Probably like any other one of their dates. Baka-Kotoko clattering on and on, making a fool of herself, and Onii-san cleaning up after her, most likely kind of irritated."

"Don't be mean Yuuki-kun! I'm sure they are having a good time. They are a loving married couple after all! Besides, don't you ever envision a nice date with the one you love?"

"Envision? If you mean daydream, I am pretty sure that is yours and baka-Kotoko's area of expertise, not mine."

"Mou! The focus of my question was on the topic of dates. Not my imagination. You are so unromantic! Forget it. I'm going to play with Kotomi-chan!" Pouting, the normally mellow-natured girl turned her back on her irksome boyfriend of half a year and began to storm upstairs towards the baby room.

"Ha?! Why are you getting angry? I talk like this normally. I may be your boyfriend who grew up with you, but I can never figure out what is going on inside your head. Why can't you just say exactly what you want instead of beating around some hypothetical bush?" an utterly confused Yuuki reasoned, also making his way to the second floor of the house: where his niece and fickle girlfriend were currently setting up in an impromptu tea-party with stuffed animals and dolls.

"Yuu-kii ji-sa, Konwomii-neecha said it's a girl's only paa-tee!" *

"I'm still outside the door, aren't I Kotomi? So technically I am not breaking the rules. Do you mind if I borrow your Konomi-neechan for a bit? I need to talk to her."

"Ah-dull talk? I want to too!" The ever-curious girl asked expectantly. *

"Dame, only when you are older. When you reach Konomi's age." **

"Boo. Yuukii-ji-sa, you meanie! Konwomii-neecha, how old are you?"

"I am nineteen, almost twenty."

"I am two, almost twee! How mush longer til I can ah-dull talk too?" *

"Umm let's count on your fingers. We start at three and stop when we get to nineteen."

"Why twee? Kaa-san and Tou-cha said to start at one when we count." *

"Uhh, in order to know how many years you have left until you are nineteen years old you have to start with how old you will be next. Which is three, right?"

"But why?"

"Hmmm… why, huh… that's a good question Kotomi-chan…" Troubled, by the clever kid's question, Konomi glanced pleadingly at Yuuki, who was currently stifling a chuckle, for help.

"Kotomi, if you have 3 bears now and you want 19 bears, how many more bears will you need?" Yuuki calmly asked his niece, while putting three teddy bears in front of her; earning himself an eyebrow raise from Konomi, a look of "how is that supposed to help" flashing across her face.

"Ahmm…Six-tween!" Kotomi stared at her bears intently, and then moved her fingers in a counting fashion before proudly answering.

"Correct. How did you get 16?"

"I counted."

"Ok, but why did you not start with just one bear?"

"Because I ah-wehdy have twee bears here." Kotomi beamed hugging her stuffed animals close.

"So, now, do you know why you have to start with three if you want to know how many years you need to wait until you are Konomi's age?"

"Yes! Because I am ah-wehdy twee!"

"Good, last question, how many more years until you can join adult talks?"

"Six-tween!"

"Perfect. Can Kotomi and I talk now?"

"Yes! But Yuukii-jisa lied. You asked one more question after the last one."

At his smart-alack niece's snarky comment, Yuuki could not help but laugh out loud as he got up and left with Konomi in toll, who was still recovering from watching that awe-inspiring exchange between the elder geniuses to the younger. Kotomi is most definitely related to Yuuki-kun, she totally inherited Naoki-san's IQ boosted brain!

"I take it that you are not mad at me anymore?" Yuuki asked smugly after Konomi gushed about what an amazing job he did explaining the math problem to Kotomi-chan for five whole minutes.

"That's a different issue entirely Yuuki-kun!"

"And we're back… Seriously just say what you really want, instead of trying to pry what you want to hear out of me with silly little schemes. Haven't you learned from watching baka-Kotoko and Okaa-san fail time and time again in their over-the-top antics to get Onii-san to conform to their idea of a romantic lover? Just be yourself. I fell in love with you Sagawa, Konomi, not Kotoko, nor my mom. So stop copying their crazed ideas and try not to let yourself get dragged into their hopeless plans, yea?"

"Yuuki-kun~" Hearing his genuine, "I-give-up-eques" confession, Konomi felt her eyes pooling with gleeful tears.

"Don't cry busu, you still haven't told me what you were mad about earlier." Yuuki scolded the girl before him, yet with no edge in his voice, only fondness.

"I wanted to go on a date with you. Actually, more like, I wanted you to ask me on a date. But you didn't seem to get the hint." The blushing girl whispered after her tears had been wiped from her face, by her slightly embarrassed, boyfriend's gentle caress.

"Hah? That's it? I thought it would have been some other super cringe-worthy thing." Yuuki pulled away doing an uncharacteristic double take.

"What do you mean 'that's it?' You've never asked me on a date, like ever!" Konomi whined, a little exasperated, bringing her arms crossed in front of her chest.

"I have asked you out! We've gone on countless dates before and after we got together!"

"No we haven't!"

"If our study dates, movie dates, café dates, shopping dates don't count at dates, then frankly I don't know, what does?!"

"Eh? So you did think of our outings as dates? Then why didn't you say so? I was always afraid I was reading into it too much and didn't dare call those times 'dates'!"

"Must I say everything, especially something that obvious, out loud? Of course anytime spent outside of school with someone I like counts as a date! That is the very definition of a date, isn't it?"

"So are we on a date right now?" Konomi asked hesitantly.

"Yes, dumb dumb, a babysitting date. Now come, help me make dinner." Yuuki answered affectionately knocking his clueless girl on the head, with a loose fist, before making his way down the kitchen, when he felt a force pull him from behind, causing him to almost miss a step.

"Konomi, watch it! I won't be able to catch you if we fall down the stairs. Although, I might end up in the hospital with a broken leg, trying, like Onii-san did, that one time, years ago." ** Yuuki berated, yet, not separating from his girlfriend who still had her arms circled around his waist in a back hug.

"Yuuki-kun~ Sukidesu!" **

"I know. But we really got to start cooking, before a hungry little demon named Kotomi wakes up from her nap. She got her appetite from buta-Kotoko after all." ** With that he descended the staircase, briskly entered the kitchen and efficiently started to prep hamburger steak ingredients to be used in their meal for three.

"That's not nice, Yuuki-kun. You eat a lot too, you know." Konomi quipped as she rinsed plates and silverware to set the table with, intentionally splashing her focused boyfriend in the process.

"Why you, come here!" He caught her in a loose embrace, turned headlock, and mercilessly sprinkled water from the running tap on her.

"I want to play too!" The happy couple's mini-water fight soon escalated into an epic two against one aqua-battle: with the most relentless mermaid princess who awoke from her short slumber by the giggly shrills from the kitchen as the crowned victor.

Although Kotomi quickly learned later that night, that even champions, can't be spared from Irie Naoki's fatherly discipline.

"Don't you think that you were a little harsh, Irie-kun?" the soft-hearted mother asked her strict husband timidly, outside their daughter's bedroom.

"She should have known better than to run around in the kitchen, especially with the wet floors. One week of no screen time is already light enough of a punishment." The still angry young father answered squarely, not budging from his stance.

"I get it, but you could have reasoned with her a little better. Like you do with your patients. She is a smart girl. I'm sure she already got the sense that she messed up big time by reading our expressions, the moment we got home and saw the state of war in this house." His empathetic wife continued, laying a warm, soothing hand on his forearm.

"I'm not as level-headed as people perceive me to be, especially when it comes to you and Kotomi. You two are the life and sometimes the death of me." He sighed dejectedly, leaning into her touch.

"I know, it's all because you love us so, so much. We are the same Irie-kun." She smiled at him contently, knowingly, before Naoki leaned in to meet her lips with his.

"I wonder why it took you so long to finally realize just how crazy I am about you and everything that concerns you, Irie Kotoko." He teased under his breath not moving too far from their intimate position.

"Oh I've known for a long time, genius-kun. From the moment we said 'I do', perhaps longer." She taunted right back, snuggling closer to his sturdy chest.

"Hmmm, soudeska? Then why do I recall all the times you claimed to be 'the only one who loves more' in the beginning stages of our marriage?" Naoki verbally challenged his wife, earning himself a massage of alternating mock-angry curled fists on his torso. **

"Irie-kun o ijiwaru. You were partly at fault then! You never properly explained yourself until after-the-fact; you were fully capable of sharing your thoughts to other people, like Otou-san tachi and even Kin-chan. But I was always the last to know. Why you didn't want to register our marriage yet, why you gave me the cold shoulder for months, why you wanted to go to Kobe alone, the list goes on." **

"They do say to 'save the best for last', didn't you know? Besides, I only did that because I trusted in your strong lasting "love-power" towards me. Even though there were times, where I thought you might just prove my belief wrong. Like the time you ran from home after telling me Kamogari confessed to you, asking you to leave me for good. Come to think of it, that was the first and the last time, in my 29 years of life; I became afraid of losing to someone." He mused wryly, breaking into a smug grin towards the end of his statement.

"Narcissist." Kotoko remarked with fake disdain in her voice, a sweet smile giving her away, the same smile which warranted another zealous kiss from Naoki. The pair was too engrossed in each other to notice the small giggling crack in the door behind them and the pairs of bashful watching eyes through the railing in the stairway.

Konomi lightly tugged at her stiff boyfriend's sleeve in attempt to give her favorite mentors some much needed privacy, with no prevail. "Yuuki-kun, spying is a bad habit." She whispered as loudly as she could without alerting the lovebirds, meters away.

"I needed to get something from my room, for goodness sakes. For an intelligence-unrivaled doctor, my brother sure didn't learn the concept of modesty. Can't they take it back to their room? It's not like they own this hallway." He whisper-shouted back, his brows tightly knit.

"Just give them a moment. I'm sure you can get to your room soon enough. It's getting late, I should head home. Walk with me?" The kind girl proposed, and Yuuki relented, taking her hand, leading her towards the front of the house.

"You want to stop by that new ice-cream shop near the station before we head to you house though?" The college freshman asked his happy girlfriend mid-walk, still interlocking their fingers firmly.

"Are you asking me on a late-night date, by chance?" Konomi answered with an impish glint in her eyes.

"Don't push your luck, Sagawa." Yuuki warned, and then stuck out his tongue at his giddy girl, voiding the menacing implication in his statement.

"I'd love to~" She properly replied, dragging him along to her skipping pace, a bright smile in full bloom, lighting up his night for the better.

The next day, as much as she wanted to share the good news with her two long-time relationship confidants – Irie Kotoko and Noriko – when prompted to join their not-so-subtle Operation:OFD meeting, Konomi opted to decline their pushy but kind offers to help with a simple:

"Thank you both for your efforts, but we are quite happy with the state of our relationship as of now."

willingly, keeping the utterly romantic and sweet – literally, when she recalled the blissful look on Yuuki-kun's face from last night, his cheeks puffy with spoonful's of mint chip ice-cream– side of her boyfriend, an exclusive secret for her knowledge only. And partly because said boyfriend was currently drinking his coffee at the dining table nearby, bearing his signature "not-a-word" glare into her line of sight.

The two older Irie women could only groan in disappointment momentarily, for they wanted to hear the juicy details on the results of their top-secret grand plan: "Operation: Help Yuuki Admit to Already Have Taken Konomi on an Official Date", until they devised a new project to satisfy their unquenched desire to play matchmaker / advocate of love and bliss; but that is a story to be told another day. For now, all is well in the Aihara-Sagawa-Irie household.
