After Rob finished eating and putting his suit on, he looked out at the backyard. He almost didn't recognize it! He'd let Richie handle most of the details, so, in a way, it was a surprise to him as much as Laura. He walked outside, still unable to believe what he saw.
One of the workers saw Rob coming out. "You must be Rob Petrie."
"Yeah. I can't believe what you've done!"
The worker shrugged. "Well, your son called us and told us what he wanted. He went on about how you and your wife never really had a wedding, so he wanted this to be perfect."
"I think you succeeded," Rob laughed. "My wife's still inside getting ready. I only told her about this a few minutes ago. She'll never believe it! Thank you!" He patted the man's shoulder, wanting to show he meant it.
"Don't thank me, thank your son. He loves you both a lot."
Rob nodded. He could hardly wait until Richie arrived. He stood there, still taking in the scene. Flower arrangements were perfectly laid out along the aisle he and Laura would walk down. Tables had been brought in and set up for the reception. It was all beyond anything Rob could have ever imagined.
His thoughts were interrupted moments later by Laura suddenly running outside. Her hair and makeup were still undone, but she looked beautiful nonetheless. "Oh, Rob," she whispered. "How did you ever pull all of this off?"
Rob could only smile at the amazement on her face. This, he knew, was exactly why he'd done this. "I didn't do it, honey. I put Rich in charge of most of the details. Apparently, he told these guys to make everything perfect for us."
Laura was still shaking her head in disbelief as she went back in to get ready. She could feel her heart flutter with excitement, but she also couldn't help feeling a bit nervous. She'd had no time to prepare. But she took a deep breath, forcing herself to calm down. Richie would be here soon. That was almost better than the ceremony itself!
Richie smiled as the Uber pulled up to the familiar house. His father had offered to pick him up, but he'd refused. There would be enough going on without adding a trip to the airport to the mix. It was a good thing he'd already changed into his suit. One less thing to worry about now. He grabbed his one suitcase and walked toward the house. The backyard was full of activity. He was anxious to see if his instructions had been followed, but he wanted to see his parents even more. He walked up and rang the bell.
Laura heard the sound as she was fixing her makeup. "Rob? Could you get that?" There was no answer. He was probably still out back. With a sigh, she started down the stairs. "Coming!"
At the sound of his mother's voice, Richie smiled. He couldn't wait to see her.
As Laura opened the door, she couldn't help being annoyed at Rob. Didn't he know she was busy? Was it too much to ask for him to answer the door?
But her annoyance disappeared in the time it took to open the door and see who was there. A moment later, she engulfed him in a hug.
Richie smiled as the hug ended. "Hi, Mom. What's new?"
Laura couldn't hide her happiness at seeing him. "Your father tells me you're responsible for what's happening outside."
"Well, Dad doesn't really know computers that well, and it wasn't too hard to find what I needed on the Internet." He shrugged.
"I don't know how to thank you," Laura said, still unable to keep the smile off her face. "This whole thing has been like a dream. I keep thinking I'm going to wake up. And now you're here!"
Richie hugged her again. He could see now why his dad had wanted to do this. "I promise you, this is real. But it was Dad's idea, so he really deserves the credit."
Just then, Rob came in the backdoor. When he realized who Laura was talking to, he came right over. "Ah, my best man made it!" He shook Richie's hand. "You know, I could've picked you up."
"It was no big deal to get an Uber," Richie said dismissively. "I wouldn't have missed this for anything. I'd have walked here if I had to!"
"Well, thank God it didn't come to that!" Rob laughed. "Listen, I think almost everybody is here. And I know your schedule is kind of tight, so how about we get this show on the road?"
Richie nodded his agreement. Father and son made their way back to the yard. Suddenly, Laura felt her nerves from earlier return in full force. Rob had had weeks to prepare for this, but she'd barely had a few hours. All she could do was pray that this ceremony wouldn't end in disaster like the ones they'd had so many years ago.
