The Tale of Two Fractured Souls

Chapter 3

"Why are you fidgeting so much?" Sage asked as she looked into the mirror brushing her hair. Like everyone else today she wanted to look presentable.

"Because I'm nervous. If my fidgeting wasn't an indication."

"It's just another foster home Damon. I'm sure you'll be back here in no time if this family doesn't work out."

"Thanks for the vote of confidence Sage. Really fucking helpful."

"I'm just trying to be realistic."

"Well you're not helping. I just need today to be perfect. I don't think my heart can take yet another failed attempt at a family."

"Well if it's any conception, you'll always have a family here."

"Thanks Sage. I'm sorry I was an ass to you before."

"And I'm sorry I was such a bitch. You know how I am when I'm coming down."

"You should quit that shit Sage. You know how much it's killing you. Why don't you stop while you're still not in deep?"

"You know why I can't stop Damon. Please let me live my life the way I want to."

"Okay, but if you ever need me you know how to reach me."

"Don't worry about me Salvatore. Go meet your new family."

"Bye Sage."

"Bye Salvatore. Have a great time."

When Damon got to the main room, he plastered a fake smile on his face as Mrs. Fell smiled at him standing by the woman who would be his new foster mother who was going to watch him for the next five months until he turned eighteen and was ready to go out into the real world. As if he hadn't been dealing with the real world his whole entire life.

"Ah Damon there you are. I'd like you to meet your new foster mother Esther Mikaelson."

"Nice to meet you." Damon said shaking her head as they sat down for their meet and greet.

"The pleasure is mine, Damon. Now tell me a little more about yourself."

"Well I've been in foster care since I was seven- "Damon started but Esther interrupted him.

"You are more than where you grew up Damon. What do you like? What are you interested in?"

"I like playing football. "

"What position?"

"Wide receiver."

"How exciting, do you play on your high school team?"

"Playing football cost money and I don't really have much of that."

"I see. Well we'll see what we can do when I talk to your school on Monday."

"Sounds like a good idea. How many other children do you have?"

"Eight. You'll have plenty of other siblings to talk to, so you won't feel as alone."

"Sounds nice."

"Are you ready to go?"

"More than ready."

Esther nodded as they exited the home together to start Damon's new life.

"Hey troublemaker didn't think I'd be seeing you around here." Elena said as she leaned on the pillar he had inhabited and lit up a cigarette offering him a drag.

He accepted bringing the cigarette to his lips as he answered her. "Yeah. I go to school here now."

"Awesome. Gives us a chance to get to know each other better."

"What would you like to know?"

"Where are you originally from?"

"Minnesota."

"Gross."

"It's not that bad."

"I guess I just prefer somewhere a little bit sunnier."

"Maybe one day you'll move to the keys and forget all about this small-town life that you've been living."

"Maybe. I guess we just have to wait and find out. So, how's your new family?"

"I've only met my foster mother, so I really don't know. Apparently, she has a lot of kids so that'll be nice to finally have siblings."

"It must be nice."

"Like I said I haven't met them yet, so I wouldn't know if it's going to be a disaster or not yet."

"You're right they could all be horrible people. Just be careful over there okay. Wouldn't want you to get hurt, I might have to kick someone's ass."

"Wouldn't that reaction be a little aggressive?"

"Not when it comes to the situation, we've been in all our lives."

Before he could say anything the bell for first period started cutting their conversation short.

"Shit. I better get to class before I get another occurrence. It was nice running into you again. I hope we can do that more."

"I hope so too. Goodbye Elena."

"Bye Damon." She said as he watched her retreating for praying that he would see her again.
