Chapter One

The smell of wet earth, violent howling creatures and light invaded Alexander's scents as he struggled to open his eyes. His heart began to race as he tried to remember where he was – as he focused, he noticed the ground was cold under him. There was water dripping onto him and the violent sounds seemed distant. As his eyes opened, he noticed that apart from the light coming in from an entrance above him he was inside a cave.

How did I get here? I was on a mission and then…

The ache and piercing pain as he tried to move reminded him.

He found a girl on his mission.

Where did she go?

As he rolled himself up into a crouch, he noticed the brown-haired girl across from him, watching him with wary blue eyes.

His thick brows scrunched together as she stumbled back when he had moved.

"I didn't mean to startle you. What happened?" Alexander asked as he sat down and rubbed his head. Something sticky was rubbing into his palm, and as he pulled it back to look, he noticed the blood and moved to rub it off on his pant leg.

When no answer came from the girl, he glanced back up to her intense stare, "Okay then, what's your name?"

She winced at the pain in his voice and crawled over to him, kneeling in front of him, she moved her hands to hold his head.

"What are you doing?" he looked up to her face as she scrutinized the wound on his head.

'You injured, need to heal, or you will not get out.'

A timid voice echoed through his head, and he noticed how her lips didn't move as she spoke to him. A purple light emitted from her hands, and he suddenly felt heat course through his veins.

"Why are you here?" Alexander asked her. As he began remembering what had happened, he remembered how he found her. She was lying against a tree with demons fighting each other and several seeming to have been eating at her soul.

'I have no place. That why you saw me there,' her voice echoed through him again as she sat back down against the wall. Her chest had begun heaving while sweat beaded on her forehead.

Alexander noted how broken her speech came off and how dirty and thin the rags she wore seemed. He shrugged off his jacket and moved to place it over her shoulders.

"Do you know the way out from here?" He asked as he rested against the wall beside her, watching as she pulled his jacket onto herself appropriately and nod in response to his question.

Demons still outside, waiting for protection to drop.

"If they are still outside, how are we supposed to get away?"

I make porta, only to bottom of mountain. You need to run south of the lake, they cannot follow past.

Alexander's eyes narrowed while he tried to interpret her words. He had found her while hunting demons on Whiteface Mountain before they had outnumbered him. If they were outside, they were 25 miles from the bottom of the mountain and another 25 miles from the lake. If he activated his speed rune, he should have enough energy to escape.

"Okay, I should be able to get away from them with you," he nodded as he took out his stele.

'I cannot run fast, or porta any farther,'her hand moved to stop his stele from activating his runes.

"We will escape together," he looked at her face and watched her brows furrowed together. Her frail fingers moved to pick his stele away from him and looked at him expectantly now. "What are you doing?"

'Trust, I give you magic to help,'she spoke to him and waited. In this situation, Alexander didn't have any other choice but to trust what she wanted to do with a mob of demons outside. He pulled his long-sleeved shirt off, and the strange girl leaned forward and started drawing an aching and intricate design over his chest.

When she was finished, she handed him back his stele, and the new design on his chest began to give off a purple glow. He pulled his shirt back on and could feel something warm running through him again.

"What is that?" He asked and noticed her eyes fluttering before she fell forward. Alexander caught her head from hitting the wall of the cave and pulled her into his arms as he stood up.

'My magic is connected to you; for you, it will give you more energy,'she slurred in a daze.

Alexander watched her curiously as he activated his runes that would help them make an escape. "You never did tell me your name," he said quietly when her fingers lit up.

'Sienna.'

He barely caught her voice that time as a portal opened in front of them.
