Haymitch
'Kids. breakfast!' I shout and Effie gives me such a look that I am momentarily scared. Nathan comes in first, yawns and sits down at the mahogany table. They really over-do the accommodation here. Alyssa comes in next and takes one look at the table, then runs to eat and starts eating immediately.
'How hungry are you?' I say, laughing.
'I had a dream I had no food for a month' she says in between mouthfuls.
'Nice brooch.' Nathan says, 'are you gonna eat or what Haymitch?'
'You three will be the death of me, I swear', Effie sighs.
'Don't swear Effie, it's rude', Alyssa says, and Nathan and I roar with laughter. Effie leaves in a huff and the three of us carry on with our morning. It's the first training session today and Alyssa seems nervous. Nathan is less so. He seems almost excited.
'There will be kids there who have been fighting their entire life. Watch them, they will be the career pack most likely.' I say calmly.
'Should we try and be friends with them?' Alyssa asks.
'Yes, but if they are too hostile, stay away from them, and try not to let them notice you.'
' but should we try and make friends?' Nathan asks.
'Yes. make as many as possible. You will need allies.' i reply.
Alyssa
We go to the elevator and click G for the training. There are about 6 other people there, we are a bit early.
Atala, the training instructor, waited until exactly 10:00 to explain the rules and survival tips. 4 people arrived halfway through the talk, 2 just after, and 2 about 10 minutes after. No-one cared but they got less training time. I go straight to the edible foods station. My mind seems to want to, I guess. I speak to the instructor and he shows me some simple ways to tell what's good or not. I go to the table, with a screen and look at the photos. The instructor tells me to tap the edible ones. I do quite well at first but make a few mistakes. I eventually get them all right and move on to the rope tying and snare station. The instructor here is kind. He puts his hands on mine and guides the rope to show strong knots. He starts to show me snares. I learn a basic rabbit snare. He tells me to prey on a creature's instincts.
Nathan
I have learned how to throw a spear, sever someone's head with a sword and throw knives quite accurately. Alyssa is at the fire station now. She looks like she is doing alright. There are a few people here who are definitely going to form the career pack. One of the most skilful ones is with Alyssa. They seem to be getting on. She shows him how to make fire and he teaches her to throw knives. She's lucky.
"Do you know how to use a sword", someone behind me says. It's a little boy who looks about 12. He has jet black hair and green eyes. He's very pale. He looks up at me with his big eyes and I felt like I had to. I grabbed two swords and gave one to him. A couple of people laughed when he took a swing at one one of the dummies. I put my hands on his and guided him. An hour later, he could defend himself well and chop the arms of a dummy with a single swing. I sat with Alyssa at lunch and she said she had learned how to make a fire with I stick of wood. I say "do you want me to show you how to use a bow after lunch"
"Yeah. that'd be nice".
