Chapter 2 'Night of Melancholy'
Sup cuntz. Its me, the Aussie idiot, Proffesor Ass Spiders. So stupid he can't spell Professor.
Anyways, I decided to make this chapter focus on two insecurities that I'm surprised aren't that well explored in the Rio fanfictions: Blu's sadness about never remembering his parents, and the general shitty feeling of being the last of your kind. Also, this chapter will be pretty sad, so get those tissues, lotion, magazines, and lock your door...Wait...
Anyways, lets get on with it! Enjoy or suffer.
Blu and Linda had brushed their teeth/beak, and Linda had her shower before going to bed. Blu decided to stay up longer. He sat in his cage, and was left to his thoughts.
Blu sat on his perch, the revelation that he was the last male of his kind made him feel…terrible, and lonely…He looked into his mirror, and tears formed in his eyes.
''…So, there's no one like me…'', he said sadly to himself. His emotions grew, as he realised that his offspring would have to breed with each other. Thus, his descendants would inbreed into extinction…No matter what, his species was doomed. It was pointless, why even bother, when their extinction is inevitable?
And another thought entered his head: He doesn't remember his parents, or his family, or anything before he was shipped of to the USA. He vividly remembers his last day in the wild, he was a little chick…
Linda would sometimes give him letters that were written from the perspective of his parents. They would congratulate him, tell him how proud they were…More tears formed…
It was Christmas, and Linda and her family were together. Linda was 15, and Blu was 5. Blu was perched on Linda's shoulder, and it was time to open up and read the cards they had received. Linda went through her cards, and they were from her friends and family. Blu watched on sadly, and Linda noticed this.
''Hey, it's okay, we've got you a card.'', Linda said as she handed him a card.
'To Blu', it read on the envelope. Blu opened it and read it.
'Dear Blu,
We are happy to learn of your new home, and are happy to learn you are safe. Mummy and daddy are so proud of you, Blu. You are our big, brave boy. We love you so much, and wish you the best.
Kind regards,
Mum and Dad.'
Blu started to tear up slightly, and he didn't know if it was out of sadness or happiness. Was it sweet, bitter sweet, or just bitter? Blu didn't know.
''Mum…dad…'', Blu softly croaked. Blu would receive these every Christmas, and his birthday (Exactly 10 weeks before he was found by Linda) which was on November 9.
Linda wrote them, and she did so, so Blu could feel normal, and loved by his family. Blu knew they were fake, because how would his parents know his new name, home and how would they know how to write? But, it was the thought that counts, and Blu pretended they were from his real parents…
Blu began to softly cry to himself, it just wasn't fair…That others got to have happy memories with their families, being able to feel love from their families…having families…having any memories…Blu wasn't blessed with that, and he knew they were dead…Likely having never known what happened to him, and likely feeling like terrible parents.
A horrible scene entered Blu's mind of his parents spending every day of their lives searching for him, all in vain. They'd eventually die unhappy, never knowing what happened to their son…Blu looked into his mirror, and all he saw was a pathetic orphan, who couldn't fly, who never remembered his parents, who has no social skills, and has to meet and mate with a girl…
The only family he has is Linda. Sure, she was a human, but she's the closest thing he's got. She loves him, cares for him, feeds him and comforts him…
Blu opened his cage, and went over to Linda. (note: Blu sleeps in a cage in Linda's room, which contains a mirror and a toy, his main cage is on the counter by the window.) He let out a low squawk, as he climbed onto the bed. Linda groaned,
''Wha-what do you want Blu?'', she asked him groggily, as she turned on her bedside lamp. Blu's crest was flat, and he had a sad look. Linda picked up on this and decided to comfort him. She sat up and picked up Blu, and he snuggled into her. Linda felt his tears on her chest, and she cuddled him, as she slowly stroked his crest and head feathers.
''Blu…Its okay. Please don't be worried, I'm sure you will be fine. I'll be there for you, and I always will…'', she comforted him. She guessed he was anxious about going to Australia and meeting a female that he became overwhelmed. While he was anxious about that, he was feeling depressed about him never knowing his parents, and being the last of his kind.
Blu signed for a pen and paper, to which Linda gave him. Blu wrote his message,
'Linda, I have been thinking about two things…My parents, and how I don't remember them, but I do remember being captured and smuggled…And me being the last male of my kind. My offspring would be incestuous, and they would inbreed into extinction. Linda, my species is doomed, and I feel so terrible…Why can't I just be a normal cockatoo? Or why does my species have to be in this state? Why does it have to be like this? Its so unfair…'
Blu finished and passed it to Linda, who put on her glasses, and read it.
''Do you want to just stay here?'', Linda asked him. Blu shook his head. The two would sleep together that night, and Blu had a dream…
Blu was in a weird cloudy place, but the ground was wet, lusciously green grass. There was a light, and Blu stared at it. It was quiet…
''Blu…'', a soft, female voice spoke.
''Who goes there?'', Blu cried out in fear. He received no answer, and saw a bird walking towards him. For some reason Blu knew she didn't mean harm…
''Blu, its me…'', she said to him. Blu was staring at her, in a trance almost.
''Mama…?'', Blu croaked softly, as he looked at her.
''Yes, its mum…We're so proud of you, and we miss you…'', Blu's mum told him.
''Where's dad?'', Blu asked her.
''Here.'', his dad showed up, and his parents stood beside each other.
''We love you so much Blu.'', they both said.
''Is it really you?'', Blu said as he walked over to them.
''Yes…'', they answered as they embraced him. Blu hugged them, and felt the strangest mix of sadness and happiness.
''I miss you both so, so, much…Why did you have to go?'', Blu croaked.
''We don't know…But, please, don't give up…We'll always love you, and we will forever be with you…'', they said to him.
''Please, go and meet your love…For you, for us, for our species…'', his dad told him.
''Okay…'', Blu croaked.
''We must go, but we will be with you…every step of the way…'', his mum told him. Blu grew sadder, and he tried to stop them by holding his mum closer.
''No! Please don't go…'', Blu cried while hugging her, but they separated.
''Goodbye, Blu…We love you so much…'', they said to him.
''No…Don't go…'', Blu begged softly as he walked after them, but they already went. Blu sat in silence for a moment, and then teared up even more.
''Mama, papa! Come back! Please don't leave me!'', Blu cried out in anguish. He fell down and cried in anguish. The dream faded away…
Blu woke up crying, and it was morning. The dream had given him a strange combination of feelings: Sadness, motivation, grief, happiness, melancholy, and a purpose…He knew what he had to do, and he won't let them down...
Wow, that was a pretty upbeat chapter!
Jokes aside, I might make these dream sequences and flashbacks a regular occurrence throughout the story. I want to have Blu's grief about his parents be a major part of this story. Although I won't have the story just be a depressing showcase of Blu's sadness.
Anyways, I hope you enjoyed the chapter and hopefully you didn't drown, die from sadness or fatally kill yourself to death.
Also, the idea for the card bit came from 'Adapting To A New Life', by BlueTheron. (chapter 7)
Until next time, goodbye.
