Chapter 5 'Jewel of Night'
Blokes and sheilas, drongos and Bogans, prepare for the 5th chapter in the greatest Rio story set in Australia. I have gone back and changed a few things, and by that I mean Blu can speak…sort of.
In the movie, Blu is shown to mimic a car alarm and alarm clock, but his mimicry is never shown or mentioned again. It isn't even mentioned in any of the many Rio fanfictions I have read. (exception being in Next To You, by Holospartoi258 – Alpha one, where Blu wakes Jewel up by mimicking the car alarm. Although this is just a repeat of the aforementioned scene where Blu wakes Linda up.) I have already mentioned that Blu cycled through the sounds he's picked up on when he was attacking his bell. But now, Blu is capable of whistling, saying a few phrases, and some other sounds. I am so surprised this isn't covered by other writers.
Also, the King Parrot is not named Gazza, that is merely a nickname. His actual name is Gary. For some reason _zza is a common nickname, don't ask why.
Anyways, lets get on with the chapter! Enjoy or suffer.
Night came, and Blu hasn't spoken to her since he mentioned why he came here. But Blu felt it was time to talk to Jewel again. Blu began walking about the fake jungle,
''Jewel, where are you?'', he cried out. He received no answer, but decided to keep on going. He continued walking, and he saw Jewel on a branch. She looked sad, and Blu decided to climb up the tree, and talk to her.
He reached the top,
''Jewel?'', he said softly as he slowly approached Jewel.
''What?'', she lightly snapped. Blu flinched a little, but decided to continue,
''Are you okay?'', he asked her.
''No…But I am sorry about attacking you earlier. I know its not your fault you are here. You must've been kidnapped by that bird nut…You must really miss your family, and I ask you to help me so you can be free.'', she softly answered. Blu was stung when she mentioned his family,
''Oh I definitely miss my family…'', Blu snickered, and then his tone shifted to sadness, ''I really, really miss my family…'', Blu added.
''Its okay, I'll help you, because I want others to be with their families…'', Jewel sighed at the end, and remained quiet.
''Are you alright?'', Blu asked her.
''Blu…How did you know why we're here? Also, what do you mean by 'save the species'?'', Jewel softly asked after sighing, ''Well, I know that you mean mating, but…'', Jewel quickly added.
''I mean that we're the only ones left, as far as they know…'', Blu answered. Jewel then had a look of extreme sadness,
''Are you sure? Because you said something about your family…Did that bird nut miss them?'', Jewel asked in a borderline strangled voice. Blu felt nervous, and decided to come clean,
''Promise you won't hurt me?'', Blu nervously asked her. Jewel shot him a confused look, and cocked her head.
''No? Why would I?'', she was puzzled why Blu would ask that,
''Because the bird nut didn't kidnap me…Instead he coaxed my owner to take me here…'', Blu nervously confessed. Jewel felt an injection of anger, confusion, and disgust enter her.
''Wait…You're a pet?'', she snapped.
''Yes…'', Blu timidly backed away.
''So that explains a lot doesn't it? Listen here you semi-bird drongo! I want you to get out of my sight, because I don't want to be near someone who is affiliated with humans!'', she yelled at him. Blu was shocked at her attitude change, and felt angry at her for being so prejudicial, and bigoted. But Blu decided to obey her, because he doesn't have the strength or the self-esteem to resist, and fight back. Blu climbed down, and walked to a bush, and sat down. He just sat there…and the words rang throughout his mind, each one stung him like a hornet. It all hurt, and it eroded his mood away…
Pet…PET…PET…
''Hey PET!'', ''You're a PET?'', ''Nerd bird PET boy!''
PET. PET. PET. PET.
USELESS PET. WORTHLESS PET. SEMI-BIRD. PATHETIC PET. STUPID PET.
The words viscously repeated in his mind, and Blu felt anger, despair, sadness…And the words echoed throughout his mind, growing louder and louder and louder,
Blu let out an ear splitting screech, and it all stopped…
Jewel heard this, and flew down. She saw Blu sitting there, softly crying, and repeating weird sounds and human speech. Which freaked her out, but also intrigued her.
Blu was whistling, making beeping noises, and repeating phrases,
''Hey Blu, Hello, wanna kiss? Hey Blu, hey cocky, Bluey!'', he repeated verbatim whilst rocking back and forward. Jewel decided to just leave him alone.
After his little mental breakdown, Blu decided just to go to sleep…
Blu was awoken from his sleep by the sound of banging. He investigated, and saw Jewel hitting a rock against the air vent.
''Hey, can you keep it down? I'm trying to sleep!'', Blu told her.
''Oh, I'm sorry sleepyhead, I'm trying to escape!'', she said mockingly.
''But why would you want to leave this place? This cage is honestly awesome!'', Blu asked her. Jewel rolled her eyes,
''Awesome? Oh right, I wouldn't expect a pet to understand!'', she remarked.
''Excuse me, I'm not a pet, I'm a companion parrot.'', Blu corrected her.
''Whatever you say, pet.'', Jewel sarcastically responded. Surprisingly, Blu actually found it funny.
''Okay, that was actually funny!'', Blu chuckled, and was surprised it didn't offend him.
''Glad you found it funny, pet.'', she humourously responded. Blu laughed at this,
''Wow miss Joker, for a savage you're pretty funny!'', Blu added humourously.
''Excuse me, I'm not a savage, I'm a 'Free spirited parrot'.'', Jewel replied, making fun of his statement that started this.
''Whatever you say, savage.'', Blu replied. The two were laughing at this unusual conversation, and it seemed as though they had gotten over the troubles. During their banter, Blu felt a small spark of feelings towards her.
After they finished laughing, they calmed down and fell silent.
''Jewel.'', Blu asked,
''What?'', she replied somewhat rudely,
''Is the jungle anything like this?'', Blu asked.
''You're kidding me, right?'', Jewel asked snidely.
''No, I'm serious.'', Blu responded.
''No, the jungle is nothing like this. For someone like you who has likely never been in an actual jungle, this place may look convincing. But for me, someone who has lived in the jungle my whole life, this place is obviously fake. I'd analogise this with you being in a fake house, you'd likely know it was fake rather quickly. Meanwhile I probably wouldn't.'', Jewel answered. Blu decided to ask her another question,
''Why do you hate pets?'', Blu nervously asked.
''Oh, I thought you were a 'companion parrot'! Make up your mind, pet.'', Jewel sarcastically responded. Blu snickered for a second,
''Just answer me.'', his expression and tone turned serious.
''Look, I just don't want to be around things that are associated with humans…'', Jewel answered.
''Why?'', Blu asked. Jewel sighed.
''Because I hate humans, and I just don't want to be around things associated with them! Including pets.'', Jewel answered with a bitter tone.
''Why do you hate humans?'', Blu asked her a stupid question. Jewel was dumbfounded for a second,
''Because of humans, I lost everything…You can't trust them! Just stop asking me, okay?! I just don't want to think about them…'', she snapped, and started to tear up. She began to softly cry to herself, and Blu felt a wave of guilt wash over him.
''Jewel…I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to hurt you like that…I shouldn't have asked you, I'm a fool.'', Blu sincerely apologised,
''…Its okay…'', Jewel said in a strangled voice.
''Its not okay, I shouldn't have said those things…Clearly I reminded you of something terrible, and I hurt you. What I did is not okay, and I'm so sorry for doing so.'', Blu responded with self-deprication.
''Blu, its alright, honestly. I know you didn't mean to hurt me, but its okay.'', she comforted him.
Blu was touched by this, and wanted to ask her something, but didn't do it. He knew he wouldn't survive in the wild. He watched animal planet and other documentaries, and also read books on the wild. He knew that the unforgiving Australian wildlife would kill him. He couldn't fly, couldn't forage for food, didn't know which plants were edible, which ones were medicinal, which ones were toxic etc. He couldn't survive, and he would be a burden to Jewel.
Jewel heard something, and flew over to investigate, and was captured. Blu heard this, and stumbled across a boy,
''Hello.'', Blu greeted him innocently, but was captured.
That wraps up chapter 5, hope you liked it! I know that scene with Blu having a freak out was weird, but I do want to have a few borderline surreal moments in this story. I hope I can convey them well literally.
I want the transition into liking each other to be smoother than my other stories. Next chapter will be out soon, and will contain plenty of swearing and Australian jokes. Stay tuned for more!
