Chapter 2 - New Abilities

The world slowed around Hiccup.

Not Toothless. I can't lose him.

Acting on instinct, Hiccup took his hand out of Astrid's, and thrust his arms out.

He's my best friend. He can't go.

His hands started to glow white, with a rainbow sheen.

I can't live without him. He's family.

Something burst from his hands and raced towards Toothless.

He's the first one who accepted me.

The something reached Toothless, and slipped between him and the acid.

I need him.

It expanded, covering Toothless. Hiccup lowered his arms.

I can't imagine living without him.

Time seemed to speed up again and everyone stared in shock as the acid hit the glowing, shimmering shield that completely covered Toothless. The acid slid off and sizzled on the ground. The Changewing that attacked Toothless spooked and took off. They could see it fly away until it used camoflauge and vanished. The shield faded and disappeared.

"What was that?" Fishlegs asked. Hiccup just stared at his hands, the only one there that knew that he did whatever that was.

"Are you okay, Hiccup?" Astrid asked, concerned. Hiccup didn't respond, too shocked to talk.

"Maybe it was a new dragon." Snotlout suggested.

"With purple claws and curvy horns and can shoot ridiculously fast firebolts?" Tuffnut asked.

"That can vanish at a moment's notice!" Ruffnut cried.

"What did you see happen?" Hiccup asked slowly.

"All we saw is that Changewing spit his acid on Toothless, and then there was a shield around Toothless. Though you did rip your hand out of mine." Astrid said, glancing at Hiccup. Toothless sidled up to Hiccup and crooned worriedly.

"I'm okay, bud." Hiccup knelt down to Toothless and scratched behind his ear flaps. "I think. Let's go." He got into the saddle and they took off. Everybody else looked at each other.

"Maybe that new dragon got him." Tuffnut suggested.

"Tuffnut, I'm sure that wasn't a new dragon. It happened too fast, and besides, even if it was a new dragon, it wouldn't be the one you described." Astrid said as she mounted Stormfly. "Now, come on. Hiccup's acting weird, and we need to get back to Berk." They took off, and the rest of them followed her.

Meanwhile, up in the air, Hiccup stared at his hands, shaken by what had happened. Then he remembered that he hadn't checked on Toothless yet. Hiccup reached down and scratched him, "Are you okay, bud? That was real close."

"I'm fine."

"Oookay. Talking dragon here. I'm going crazy."

"No, you're not." Toothless declared loyally. "I don't know what's going on, but you're not going crazy."

"Thanks, bud. I needed that." Hiccup started to growl. "What's going on?"

"I don't know. But you're talking like a dragon."

"So maybe if I-try to speak Norse-it worked!" Hiccup flung his arms up in celebration, and Toothless fired a plasma blast. He made to duck into it, and Hiccup groaned, "Oh, come on." They flew through the explosion, and Hiccup braced himself for the heat, but it didn't come. All he felt when he went through was a slight tickling sensation. "Even weirder."

"Hiccup, are you all right?" Astrid had caught up to him and Toothless. Hiccup turned in the saddle to face her. "You're not even burnt!" She cried. "What's going on?"

"I have no idea. All I know is that I'm fireproof, Toothless talks, I talked like him, and some weird glowing thing came out of my hands when they started to glow when that Changewing spit acid at Toothless. Also, time slowed down, and I have no idea what's going on!" His voice grew loud with frustration as he counted each item off on his fingers. Astrid just looked at him, shocked.

"So you were the one who did that glowing shield thing back there?" Fishlegs asked.

"Yes." Hiccup said.

"How?" Fishlegs questioned.

"I don't know. I-" Hiccup broke off. He froze and a voice came from the sky.

"Hiccup Horrendous Haddock the Third, we need to talk." A huge hand came down from the heavens and plucked Hiccup off Toothless.

"Toothless!" Hiccup cried as he was carried up into the sky. Toothless started to fall, out of control because Hiccup wasn't there to work the pedal. Hiccup flung his arms out, acting on instinct, and his hands glowed. Something glowing flew out of them and struck the pedal. The pedal began moving on its own, allowing Toothless to fly. He flew up towards Hiccup, but he was too late. The hand vanished as fast as it had appeared, and Toothless was left with empty air all around him. He flew back down to the rest of the Riders, saddened beyond belief, and unable to see a way to get Hiccup back.

"Whoa. A giant hand just took Hiccup." Snotlout said.

'"Yep. The gods have kidnapped Hiccup, right after he began to gain new abilities." Astrid summed up.
