Chapter 3 - A Chat
Hiccup was placed gently down on a chair that was too big for him. He shook off the dizziness from whatever just happened.
"Be careful, Hiccup Haddock. Traveling between worlds can make the body a titch unhappy. But you get used to it after a while." A voice said from a few feet in front of him.
"Who are you?" Hiccup looked up once his view cleared and saw a middle aged Viking man with an eye patch.
"I am Odin, young one." The man said.
"Od-odin." Hiccup stammered. He started to get up to bow, but Odin waved him down. Hiccup sat back down, awed.
"I called you here to talk about your powers." Odin said.
"My powers? You mean the strange things that just happened to me? So what was that thing that came out of my hands?" Hiccup asked.
"It is called seidr, child." Odin explained. "You were born with these abilities, but I had to hide them because it would have ended in a catastrophe for Midgard. They are now appearing because you thought that Toothless was going to die. You were scared that you would lose Toothless, and so your abilities awakened to protect him."
"So these are permanent?" Hiccup asked.
"Yes. They will get stronger as you get older. Even I do not know what abilities you will possess, or how they will work." Odin replied. "But our time is up. I must send you back to Midgard."
He's talking to me like an equal, or at least close to it. Does that mean…
Having this thought, Hiccup froze. "Odin, you seem to be talking to me like I'm equal to you, or close to it. Why is that?"
"Because you are my equal. You have the power of a god right now, since your power has grown over the years." Odin stood and swept his hands out wide. "Goodbye, Hiccup Haddock. It was nice talking to you." Hiccup stood up, shocked, and a portal opened beneath his feet before he could speak. He fell through, and found himself falling through the air. The Dragon Riders were straight below him.
"Toothless!" Hiccup yelled as he plummeted towards the sea. The Riders and their dragons below him looked up, saw him falling, and flew towards him to try and catch him. Toothless surged ahead of them and swooped under Hiccup. Hiccup landed in the saddle as the other Riders rushed to catch up.
"Are you okay?" Toothless asked.
"I'm fine." Hiccup replied. "Are you?"
"Yes. Where did you go? You freaked me out!" Toothless asked.
"Odin wanted to talk. It was informative, but shocking." Hiccup said.
"Hiccup! Are you okay?!" Astrid called as she and Stormfly finally caught up with them.
"I'm fine. Just a bit shocked." Hiccup called back.
"Why?" Fishlegs asked.
"I'll explain later. I only want to explain once, and since we're already going back to Berk, I can tell my father and Gobber at the same time as you." Hiccup said.
"But why do you only want to explain once? Huh? Are you hiding something?" Tuffnut accused.
"Tuffnut, I need to figure it out myself. I'm still not used to the idea as a whole." Hiccup explained.
"What idea?" Ruffnut asked.
"I'll tell you later." Hiccup said.
Swooping closer to Hiccup, Astrid said softly, "I still haven't told them what you told me. I thought you should be the one to tell them."
"Thanks, Astrid." Hiccup said. The Riders flew on in silence until they reached Berk.
When they landed, they were greeted by Gobber. "Hey, laddies! Why ya back so early?"
"We ran into some complications." Hiccup said as he got off Toothless. "Do you know where Dad is?"
"Yeah. He should be up in his hut." Gobber said. "Are you okay? You look… freaked out."
Hiccup waved off his concerns. "I'm fine. Just shocked. Come with us. You need to hear this, too." The Riders and Gobber got on their dragons and flew towards Stoick's hut. They landed, and got off their dragons. Hiccup led them into the hut, and called, "Dad? Are you here?" He got no answer. "Dad?"
"What do you need, son?" Stoick asked from behind them, having just landed with Skullcrusher.
"Something happened out on the island that I need to tell you about." Hiccup replied.
"Are you okay?" Stoick questioned.
"I'm fine." Hiccup assured him.
Stoick joined them in the hut and sat down. "So what happened?"
"Astrid, why don't you tell him what you saw." Hiccup said.
"So we made it to Changewing Island and landed safely. We started to look for a Changewing, and Toothless wandered ahead-" Astrid started.
"Excuse me, I don't wander. I was scouting." Toothless said indignantly, sticking his nose in the air. Hiccup snorted.
"What's so funny?" Gobber asked.
"I'll explain later. Go on, Astrid." Hiccup said.
"So anyways, Toothless was up ahead, and me and Hiccup walked past some bushes, and we saw a Changewing spit acid on Toothless. But before it hit Toothless, a glowing shield just appeared around Toothless, and it protected him from the acid." Astrid explained, "Hiccup acted strange after that, being quiet and rushing off on Toothless. He took off back towards Berk, and the rest of us got on our dragons and followed him. All of a sudden, I saw him fling his arms up, and Toothless shot a plasma blast. They flew through it and Hiccup wasn't even burnt! Then he said some strange things, but in the circumstances, they're probably true. Then he started to explain some things, and a voice said from the sky, 'Hiccup Horrendous Haddock the Third, we need to talk.'" She deepened her voice as she said this. "Then a giant hand came from the sky and plucked Hiccup off Toothless, and as Toothless spun out of control, something white came from the direction of the hand and hit the pedal for the tailfin. It started moving on its own, and then the hand vanished. We flew on, seeing that there was nothing that we could do, and then Hiccup fell out of the sky. He refused to answer our questions once we caught him, and kept saying that he'd explain later. So now that it's later, so what's going on, Hiccup?"
"So, I'm just going to do this in order. First, the shield thing was me. It came out of my hands, and, according to Astrid's account, it happened in less than a second. Secondly, when I was flying with Toothless before they caught up to me, I could understand him, and I started talking like a dragon." Hiccup said, "I switched back to Norse, after some confusion, and in celebration, Toothless fired a plasma blast and flew through it. To me, it only tickled a little bit. Then, Odin-"
"That was Odin?!" Snotlout asked, "What would he want to do with you?"
"Yes, it was Odin." Hiccup said, "He talked to me about what had happened. He said he hid these powers from everyone to keep the balance of Midgard. He called it seidr. Odin said that he doesn't know what other powers I have, or how they will work. But, in the last part of the conversation, he said that… he said that…" Hiccup broke off.
"So what did he say?" The twins said at the same time. They were ignored, as usual.
"I'm having trouble believing this. Is this some sort of trick, Hiccup? Because this is very far fetched." Stoick asked.
"I'm with Stoick on this one. This seems like a prank." Goober said.
"It's not a trick or a prank." Hiccup said. Everyone but Toothless and Hiccup was shocked at the grunts and growls coming from Hiccup's mouth. "If you won't believe me, then there's no point in trying to explain it." Hiccup walked over to the stairs and walked up to his room. Toothless followed him, and they heard the door shut loudly.
"It's all true, chief." Astrid said, "As demonstrated, he can talk like a dragon. Also demonstrated, Hiccup is angry that you didn't believe his word when he is clearly nervous about this whole thing." Astrid moved out of the stunned circle and went up to Hiccup's room. "Hiccup?" She asked softly, "Are you okay? Can I come in?"
"Yeah." Hiccup said.
Astrid opened the door, and stepped in. She closed the door behind her. Then she looked at Hiccup and gasped.
"What?" Hiccup asked.
"Your eyes. They're Night fury eyes." Astrid said.
