Chapter 4 - Transformation

Hiccup blinked. So that's why the room looked different. It was brighter, and more colorful. But it also felt right to him, like it was natural. "I've had enough surprises now that any more surprises aren't surprising any more." He commented.

Toothless moved forward and growled excitedly, "Cool! Is the rest of you going to be Night Fury, and then you'll be a Night Fury with me and we'll fly together and-oh. That would mean you couldn't work the tailfin." He looked down, sad. Then he perked up hopefully, "But you could do that thing you did earlier that made me fly on my own."

"Calm down, Toothless. I have no idea what will happen with all of this," He gestured randomly around the room, "and I don't know exactly what I did back then, but if something does happen, I'll try." Hiccup crooned to Toothless. Astrid stepped back, and looked uneasily at Hiccup. Then she inhaled quickly and softly, shocked as she noticed the black scale winking in the daylight, glinting dully on the back of Hiccup's hand. "Wh-Sorry, what?"

"Your hand. There's a scale." Astrid said, pointing. She paused, thought something over, and asked, "How did you hear me? I was quiet."

"Really? It sounded loud to me." Hiccup stated. He looked at his hand. Another scale had joined the first. "Toothless?" He said shakily.

Toothless was instantly by his side. "What? Is something wrong?"

"Let's go." Hiccup got onto Toothless's saddle and prepared to take off, but was interrupted by a loud exclamation from Astrid.

"Where are you going?" She asked.

"I'm just going to go on a quick flight to clear my thoughts." Hiccup responded as they took off.

Downstairs, the others heard Astrid ask the muffled question of 'Where are you going?', and Stoick rushed upstairs and threw open the door. But he was too late, and he watched as Hiccup flew over the village on Toothless. He ran back downstairs and outside, ignoring the cries of the confused Dragon Riders and Gobber. Stoick vaulted onto Skullcrusher, and took off. "Please follow him, Skullcrusher." He said, pointing to Hiccup.

Since Toothless was flying slow, they quickly caught up. As they approached Hiccup and Toothless, Stoick said, "Son? I'm sorry about doubting you earlier, but it really is hard to believe. Those growls were convincing, but, seeing as you have continuous, ah, exposure to the twins, those could have been faked. So please, give some solid evidence for this story. I really want to believe you, son, I really do, but as chief, I need evidence."

"Does this count?" Hiccup turned in the saddle, and his father sucked in a breath.

"Hiccup, wh-what happened?" The normally stoic Stoick was shocked, and you could see it plainly on his face.

"I don't know, Dad." Hiccup said, "But what I do know is that it feels natural, and I'm growing scales." He held up his hand, which now had five scales on it, before continuing, "The scales keep growing, and I hear the softest of sounds now. I can smell so much more right now." Hiccup sniffed, then gagged. "By the way, when was the last time you bathed?"

Ignoring the question, Stoick asked, "What do you think is happening? Are you going to-?" He broke off, unable to continue.

"Turn into a dragon?" Hiccup asked dryly. "Right now, I think that's what's going to happen, but I could be wrong."

He was interrupted by Toothless, who asked eagerly, "So you think I was right?" When Hiccup nodded his assent, Toothless flew a loop-de-loop in celebration.

"So why's he so excited?" Stoick asked, curiosity breaking through his shock.

"He had an idea, and I just proved him right." Hiccup said, running a hand through his hair and freezing. He started to grope around on top of his head, and then moved to the side.

"Are you alright, Hiccup?" Asked a worried Stoick.

"I think so." Hiccup said. "I just felt some scales on the top of my head. And my ears… they're changing shape." Toothless banked and Skullcrusher followed, turning back to Berk. Hiccup was too engrossed in thinking that he didn't notice. He lowered his hands, only to see that now both hands were covered in scales. "Toothless, we need to-oh. Go quickly, bud." Toothless sped up and left Stoick and Skullcrusher in the dust. Hiccup leaned down closer to Toothless's back, rushing back to his house. They flew into his room, nearly knocking Astrid, Ruffnut, and Tuffnut over.

Hiccup dismounted, and hurriedly tried to recall the feeling of the seidr he did that allowed Toothless to fly on his own. His hands started to glow as he remembered, but then he faltered. He didn't know how to do seidr, and he started to stop. But then something inside him, in his chest, told him to just let the seidr flow, and he focused on what he intended to do. The glowing material started to collect in his hands, and when the thing in his chest nudged him, he released it into the mechanism that controlled the tail. It was absorbed by the mechanism.

Toothless looked at the fake tailfin. He moved his tailfin, and the fake fin opened. He opened and closed the two fins, ecstatic that he could fly on his own again. But then he felt sad, because then he wouldn't rely on Hiccup to help him fly, and he loved how they worked together to achieve flight. Thinking about Hiccup, he looked over, and saw him sigh and sit down on his bed.

"Whoa. Hiccup just did seidr. What's he doing to do next?" Ruffnut asked.

"Dear sister, I believe he will turn into a Night Fury. He has the eyes, and is growing black scales, as seen on his hands." Tuffnut said.

"Very true. Then the question becomes 'What will happen next?'. Will he be able to turn back to be human? Or will he be stuck as a dragon?" Ruffnut stated.

"Oh, be quiet." Astrid chided. "Are you okay, Hiccup?"

"I think I'm fine. But actually, the twins have a point." Hiccup claimed, "We don't know what's going to happen." The scales started creeping down his forehead and up his neck.

Bursting into the room, Fishlegs said, "What's going on? We heard a thump, and-Hiccup, what happened?" Snotlout and Gobber followed him, and they both gaped at Hiccup.

"My best guess is that I'm turning into a Night Fury." Hiccup said. "I have the senses, eyes, and scales of a Night Fury, so the only conclusion I can come up with is that one of the abilities I have includes turning into a Night Fury, but I don't know if I'll be able to turn back, or even talk to you in that form."

They all heard a thump outside and Hiccup winced as the door downstairs slammed open. Stoick burst into the room and said, "Why'd you speed up like that? You left me behind, and I started to get really worried."

"Sorry, Dad." Hiccup apologized, "I needed to make sure Toothless would be able to fly without me. So I used seidr to make Toothless able to move the fake tailfin because it seems like this transformation is speeding up." The scales covered his face now.

Tuffnut leaned over and whispered to Ruffnut, "Hey, Ruff, look at his back." Ruffnut shifted her gaze and grinned.

"It looks like someone stabbed a spear through him and left the spearhead poking through his back, and then covered it in black paint." Ruffnut whispered back.

Hiccup heard this and glanced at his back. His back had two black nubs, each about three inches long, right below his shoulder blades. He looked further down and saw that there was another nub protruding from his tailbone. As everyone watched, they grew and got bigger.

"They seem to be going through your clothes, as if the clothes aren't there." Fishlegs noted.

"That's odd. You would think that they would rip the clothes, but it acts like the clothes are nonexistent." Hiccup agreed.

Snotlout watched as the nubs by Hiccup's shoulder blades reached the length of a foot. "How are you taking this so casually? It's like the gods have gifted you with the ability to take this like another normal event. Wait… when you saw Odin, did he do that?" He asked.

"No." Hiccup said flatly.

"Speaking of Odin, you never really finished what you were saying about Odin. So what was the last thing he said?" Astrid asked.

Hiccup said softly, "He said that I had the power of a god." Stunned silence filled the room.

The nubs on Hiccup's back and tailbone had now reached the length of two feet, and they started to grow faster. Since Hiccup was nervous, his seidr sped up the transformation. Hiccup's arms and hands began to thicken. His thumbs moved up towards his other fingers, and his pinky fingers merged with his index fingers. All of the fingers left grew wider and began to harden until they were claws. His clothes seemed to disappear as his arms grew as big and shortened to the same size as Toothless's.

"This is so unfair. Hiccup gets the power of a god, and what do I get? I mean, everybody knows I'm the best." Snotlout grumbled.

Hiccup shot up, "You think this is easy for me? I just get this dumped on me all of a sudden. I'm glad that it saved Toothless, but this-this is huge." Snotlout actually backed up a step from the angry Hiccup. "For once, would you please think about someone other than yourself?"

"Calm down, Hiccup. It won't help anyone to get mad." Toothless said soothingly. Hiccup sighed and walked over to Toothless.

"Thanks, bud." Hiccup thanked. His legs began to get wider, and his clothes began to disappear. Hiccup's legs shortened and his foot grew claws. This process continued until his legs matched Toothless's. The prosthetic leg clattered to the ground and Hiccup wobbled. Toothless caught him as he fell over.

Fishlegs gasped, "Your foot! It's growing back!"

Hiccup's lost foot was indeed growing back, and his left leg got longer as it grew back. It elongated into a foot with four sharp claws on it. Toothless set Hiccup on the floor as his chest started to expand. It nearly tripled in thickness, and Hiccup's neck began to widen and match his chest. Next, his jaw got wider and longer. It also moved 90 degrees so that it lined up with his neck. His nose shrunk and his hair was sucked into his skull. The skull expanded so that it matched his jaw. Hiccup's eyes moved so that they were on the front of his new face. Two slits opened and widened just above his mouth. His ears moved behind his eyes and six nubs poked out his scales next to his ears. Ridges appeared down the middle of his head and larger ridges poked out down his spine. By now, his wings and tail had nearly grown all the way. His wings had the bones and muscles, and now a thick membrane extended between the scaled wing structure. His tail grew subwings and tailfins. The ridges that were on his spine extended down his tail. Hiccup relaxed on the floor.

The process clearly done, Astrid and Stoick asked at the same time, "Are you okay, Hiccup?"

"I'm fine. I think." Hiccup replied in Norse.

"Well, at least we'll be able ta understand him." Gobber remarked.
