The next morning, it was Ruby's turn to make breakfast which meant cereal and scrambled eggs. Jaune walked into the kitchen and saw all the others sitting around the table.
"Am I the last one up?"
"As always" Nora said laughing.
He sat down and poured a bowl of cereal.
"It will be good to get back out there" Yang said.
"We could really use the help" Nora said "I don't know how you four could have done this by yourselves for so long."
"We split into pairs sometimes" Weiss said "while two of us fight, the other two go rest. Or we go to two different locations."
"We can't really do that" Jaune said.
"Oh, I'm sorry" Weiss said "I didn't think before I opened my mouth."
"It's ok" Jaune said.
"So what's been going on out there?" Ruby asked.
"Grimm, grimm and more grimm" Nora said.
"Glynda said that our main concern today is to eliminate grimm and drive them from the kingdom" Ren said.
"Oh yeah!" Yang said as she punched her fists together in front of her "that's my favorite kind of mission!"
"Mine too" Nora said.
"Call it, Ruby" Jaune said "you and your team have been taking care of Vale lately."
"Ok" Ruby said "If there are that many grimm we should split up. Blake, you and Yang take the parks and airport to the east."
"Got it" Blake said.
"Weiss and I will go west to the shopping district. Ren, you and Nora go north to the train station and villages."
"We're on it" Ren said.
"ok" Ruby said "Jaune you-"
"Let me guess" Jaune said "stay here and guard the house because I don't have a partner."
"Actually I was going to say you can go with any team you want" Ruby said "are you ok, Jaune?"
"Yeah, I'm sorry" Jaune said.
"This week is the anniversary" Nora said.
They all looked at each other for a few seconds.
"Oh, the fall of Beacon" Blake said "how could we forget that?"
"Not only the fall of Beacon" Ren said "also the loss of Pyrrha."
"It hurts all of us" Nora said "but Jaune takes it extra hard. She was his partner and he thinks he could have saved her if he was there."
"I could have" Jaune said.
"You don't have to go hunt with us today Jaune" Ruby said "you can stay here if you want."
"No" Jaune said as he wiped his eyes "I need to go fight. I made a promise to Pyrrha that I would keep fighting."
"Ok" Ruby said as she put a hand on his shoulder "then you're welcome to come with me and Weiss or Blake and Yang or Ren and Nora. Go with anyone you want."
Jaune thought for a minute, then looked at Ren and asked "would you guys be upset if I went with someone else?"
"Not at all" Nora said.
"Do what makes you happy" Ren said with a small smile.
"Can I go with you and Blake, Yang?" he asked.
"Sure" Yang said.
"Awesome" Jaune said "let's go!"
"Let's finish breakfast first" Blake said.
"Oh right" Jaune said as he sat down.
After breakfast, the three teams gathered their weapons and started to leave. They all walked out of the house and Weiss locked the door.
Ruby held her hand out to Weiss and asked "ready?"
Weiss took a breath and nodded then stepped closer. Ruby put her arm around Weiss' waist and they shot off in a red and white blur, leaving rose petals behind them.
"Take the train guys" Yang said "it's the fastest way to the northern villages."
"Plus the train could use the protection" Blake added.
"You got it" Nora said as she skipped away.
Ren nodded and followed her.
"Rooftops Blakey?" Yang asked.
Blake smiled and nodded.
"Rooftops?" Jaune asked.
"Sure" Yang said "it's faster to go along the rooftops."
She saw the look on Jaune's face and asked "you gonna be ok to go along the roofs?"
"Y…yeah" he said "let's do it."
Blake threw Gambol Shroud to the top of a building and quickly climbed up. Yang fired Ember Celica at the ground, propelling herself up to the second floor and grabbed a window ledge.
She held her right hand out to Jaune and said "come on."
Jaune got a running start and jumped. He landed a few feet short, but quickly climbed up. He took Yang's robotic hand and looked up at her.
"Ready?" Yang asked.
"For what?" Jaune asked.
Yang held on as tight as she could with her left hand and threw Jaune to the top of the building with her right hand. She blasted Ember Celica again, propelling herself higher. She reached the roof next to Blake and Jaune.
"Thank you" Jaune said looking a little queasy.
"No problem" Yang said "now come on, we've got a lot of ground to cover to reach the airport."
"Right" Blake said.
"Ok" Jaune said.
Blake and Yang began running across the rooftops, jumping from building to building. They looked back and saw Jaune still on the first building, looking over the edge at the alley below.
Yang sighed and said "be right back."
She ran back to the first building and asked "are you coming?"
"I'm not to good with heights" Jaune said "especially jumping over them."
"You sure you want to come with us?" Yang asked.
"Of course I'm sure" Jaune said as serious as he could.
"Ok" Yang said with a sigh "get on my back. I'll carry you."
"Are you sure you can carry me and still jump?" Jaune asked.
"I can throw you across the gaps" Yang said.
"I think I'd prefer to ride over being thrown" he said "don't worry, when we get back on the ground I can definitely hold my own. I've got your back, Blake's too."
"Well, let's go" Yang said.
Jaune climbed onto her back, wrapped his legs around her waist and his arms around her neck.
Yang looked over her shoulder and said "say 'giddyup' one time and I'll drop you between the tallest buildings I can find."
"Dang it" Jaune said quietly.
"What was that?" Yang asked.
"I said yes ma'am" Jaune said.
"That's what I thought you said" Yang said "hold on."
She started running along the roof towards the first gap.
Meanwhile, Ruby and Weiss reached the shopping district and skidded to a halt.
"I feel less sick this time" Weiss said.
"So you're getting used to it" Ruby said "we can speed all over the city and beat Yang and Blake to any battle anywhere."
"Focus Ruby" Weiss said "we can talk about that later. Right now we have to get the grimm out of Vale."
"Right" Ruby said.
She took Crescent Rose off of her back and extended it. Weiss drew Myrtenaster from her side and rotated the cylinder to ice dust.
"Follow me" Ruby said "we'll skirt the edge of the strip malls then head into the main district."
"Right behind you" Weiss said.
Ren and Nora had ridden the train almost to the end of the track.
"This is strange" Ren said looking out the window.
"That the dining car ran out of pancakes?" Nora asked.
"No" Ren said "we haven't seen a single grimm outside of the forest. The report we were given stated that grimm were all over the kingdom."
"Yeah" Nora said "there should be grimm everywhere."
"Yes" Ren said.
The train finally reached the end of the line and the passengers got off. Ren and Nora drew their weapons and began to search the nearby villages. A few minutes later, Weiss and Ruby were still looking through the shopping district. Their scrolls began ringing in unison. They pulled their scrolls out and looked at the caller ID.
"Yang" Ruby said.
"Ren" Weiss said.
"Time for a team meeting I guess" Ruby said as she answered her scroll.
She put it on speaker and said "hey Sis."
Weiss answered hers on speaker and said "hello Ren."
"So, wasn't there supposed to be grimm out here somewhere?" Yang asked.
"Our search came up empty as well" Ren said.
"Same here" Ruby said.
"Glynda wouldn't lie to us, would she?" Jaune asked.
"Of course not" Weiss said.
"Maybe she just got some bad info" Nora said.
"Or fake info to get us all spread out" Blake said.
Suddenly, all of their scrolls began blinking red as Glynda's voice yelled "attention Everyone! We need you all! NOW!"
"What's going on?" Ruby asked.
"Beacon!" Glynda yelled "grimm are over running the remains of Beacon Academy! We need you all here now! Ursas, beowolves, deathstalkers and nevermores! Dozens of human grimm! We need all of you here as fast as you can get here!"
"We're on our way" Ruby said "everyone find the fastest way possible to get to Beacon!"
Their scrolls went off again, Glynda's face appeared again.
"I'm sorry" she said before anyone else could say anything.
"Don't apologize for asking us to come to Beacon" Ruby said "we're on our way."
"Not that" Glynda said "once I called you, several detachments of grimm began heading towards your scroll signals. You don't have to engage them, make your way around and get to Beacon when you can. The grimm should follow you back and we can fight them together with the huntsmen and reinforcements we have here."
"The fastest way to Beacon is through the grimm" Yang said "we can handle it."
Glynda shook her head and said "I can't ask you to risk yourselves trying to-"
"We've been through worse" Nora said "we're going to get to Beacon as fast as we can. No matter what!"
"We'll be there soon" Ruby said "everyone get to Beacon the best way you can. Stay with your partners. No one fights alone! No exceptions this time! Stay in communication. Unless you are engaged in a fight, check in every hour. Ok?"
"Got it" Blake said.
"Not a problem" Ren said.
Ruby put her scroll away and said "let's go Weiss."
"Right behind you" Weiss said.
"Time to go" Yang said "plenty of spare magazines Blake?"
"My pouch is full" Blake said "several different dust types."
"Good" Yang said "ready to book it, Jaune?"
"I'm ready" he said.
"There isn't another train for hours" Ren said.
"Let's commandeer one" Nora said "just the locomotive. It'll be faster that way."
"That isn't legal for us to do" Ren said "we aren't military personnel."
"They have to give us a train" Nora said "especially when they find out what we're doing. Come on!"
She ran to the train station with Ren close behind.
I know I promised grimm fights in this chapter. Instead I set up three shorter chapters with several fights and one big fight coming. Stay tuned
