Hey everyone! I'm back from the dead with a new chapter for the first time in years. I've also gone over all the previous chapters and tidied them up a little. The only major changes are that Rose and Hugo are now consistent characters in the entirety of this fic. The second gen don't know the true identities of the third gen and the third gen are from 2020.
Remember: First gen names: bold.
Third gen names: Normal
James Sirius Potter POV
The time travellers sat clustered together on the Gryffindor table in the Great Hall. It wasn't too different to their time James observed. Students still shovelled the piles of food eagerly to their mouths, somehow finding time to moan at the early hour to their neighbours in-between bites, all contibuting to the dull roar of noise in the hall. There were still a few students rushing into the Great Hall to quickly grab some breakfast, having overslept. The Slytherins glared over at the Gryffindor table, sitting in little clusters and whispering. That was a bit weird James thought but he guessed they had a lot more secrets in this time from what he'd heard.
"I wonder what Teddy will teach you." Rose wondered out loud.
"Well he hasn't had much time to prepare, so I suppose it'll be something he's already reasonably familiar with," Hermione had a book open next to her at the table and every few minutes she'd turn the page.
"Maybe he'll teach you how to change your hair colour!" Hugo said excitedly.
Rose signed "that's Transfiguration Hugo, besides Teddy doesn't need to know how to transfigure his hair. He's a metamorphmagus, he just...can."
Hugo's shoulders sagged and he looked down at his plate, not meeting the older children's eyes.
"You're right though Hugo. It would be cool if we could learn to do what Ted does." Albus smiled at the younger boy.
James thought that being able to disguise yourself must come in handy. He could imagine pulling a prank then being able to transform in to someone else before you could get caught. Maybe, walking through Knockturn Aleey and finding information on the latest plot the dark wizards had come up with, but he was more of a man of action. He preferred a straight fight to sneaking around and using disguises. "I hope Ted does a dueling lesson. That would be sick!"
"That would be awesome," Fred agreed, jumping up and shooting a tickling charm at James who immediately shot a jelly legs charm in return. Their duel to any outside observers almost looked like a practiced dance as they weaved and ducked around each other, both boys able to predict the others movements more often than not. It drove their professors mad in their time which in James' opinion just added to the fun.
"I doubt he'd go straight into a duelling lesson with a class he doesn't know," Hermione said, rolling her eyes at Fred and James.
"Oh come on Hermione, don't be such a buzzkill!" Ron exclaimed, puffing out his chest and looking around the group for someone to agree with him.
"I'm not being a buzzkill, Ronald. I'm merely observing that it's an unlikely prediction!" Hermione said stiffly.
"I bet you're hoping for a complex theory lesson!" James saw Harry suppress a smile at this as he pointedly looked anywhere but at Ron or Hermione.
James exchanged a look with Fred, both of them having taken a break from their duel to laugh at the teenage versions of their Aunt and Uncle, it seemed that they'd always bickered like an old married couple. Even before they'd become one!
Albus pulled out his pocket watch and quickly got up "guys, we should probably all get going. If we don't hurry we're gonna be late."
"Last one there's a mountain troll!" Fred ran off shooting a stinging hex right at James' bum.
"Oi!" James yelled chasing after him. Fred wasn't going to get away with that.
Harry Potter POV
Harry looked to James and Fred's retreating backs as they laughed and chased each other out the hall. James had been either talking, running around or pulling some kind of joke since the moment he woke up that morning. If he was his future child then he did have to wonder how his future self kept up with them. He really was getting more and more curious about the third generations identities. He wished he'd had the map on him when they'd taken their unexpected trip through time, but it lay useless in his trunk in 1996.
He turned to Albus "Are they always well…" He struggled to find a polite way to phrase it.
Albus laughed, "That mad? Yeah, most of the time. Mum locked them out of the house one summer after they broke her favourite vase and said she wasn't letting them back in until they'd done a thousand laps of the back garden. James swears they actually did! They came back looking done for, but James never turns down a challenge."
"Merlin! That's pretty insane," Harry chuckled.
"Yeah, he's always doing crazy stuff, everyone thinks he's pretty legendary."
"Must be quite the legacy to live up to," Ron said in a surprisingly thoughtful moment.
"Yeah and what with dad being well...Erm" Albus trailed off almost as if he'd said something he shouldn't. Harry wondered if maybe James' legacy wasn't the only thing he had to live up to. He'd mentioned his Dad and even though Harry hated to think about any kids of his having to put up with being stared at, growing up as the children of the chosen one must bring pressures of its own.
"Yeah, the legacy of having a head inflated the size of a bag of Quaffles!" Lily sounded fondly exasperated. "James acts like the world is always on his side. He can be a bit of an idiot to be honest, but he means well. I just wish he'd learn a little more about modesty."
"Sounds a bit like the James of our time," Lily sighed, not noticing James and the rest of the Marauders coming up behind her.
"Awww Prongsie you hear that Lils thinks you mean well!" Sirius trilled.
James smiled "I knew you'd come round Lily!"
"On the contrary Potter, I said a bit. I definitely think that you always mean to be as irritating as you always are." Lily sped up and pointed refused to look at the Maurauders as she hurried away to their lesson.
Harry did wonder how his Dad had managed to eventually win round his mum because she did always seem in his opinion fairly frustrated at his childish attempts to get her attention.
"I know someone who thinks the same about our Jamie," Lily nudged Albus who held back a laugh. Harry wondered who James' mystery girl was. It was odd to think that this was his future these children were living.
They made it to the Defence Against the Dark Arts classroom and waved goodbye to the younger ones as Harry, Ron, Hermione and Neville took their seats behind James and Fred, who were in the front row, ready to support their cousin. Lily sat not far from them with a girl Harry hadn't met yet. James and Sirius lounged back in their chairs in the back row, Remus setting up his quill next to them with Wormtail staring off into space by his side. Harry noticed they had class with the Slytherins.
He turned to Ron, "looks like we're in for an interesting lesson," he gestured to the Slytherin's who were all gathered on the other side of the room, looking at the Gryffindors with disdain.
"Hopefully it's duelling," Ron whispered back.
James Potter POV
Their new Professor lent against his desk at the front of the classroom. His hair was a dull black now James noted, it must be a hell of a skill as an Auror to be able to change your appearance at any time.
Teddy smiled warmly at his students, he adjusted his robes nervously. James saw Fred and James give him a thumbs up. "Good Morning everyone! Welcome to Defence Against the Dark Arts. I hope you all had a lovely break. You may have noticed I am very much not Albus Dumbledore and I do not claim to be able to live up to him, but I'll do my best to get you through your NEWTS with reasonably good grades. I'm Professor Edward Wolfson and I will be your teacher for, well I'm hoping to last at least until the end of the year, but with the Defense Against the Dark Arts post you never know!" A few members of the class chuckled at that and James decided he liked Professor Wolfson so far, he seemed like he was up for a laugh.
"So today's lesson is inspired by a recent invention that is relevant to conditions humans can suffer that mean anyone around them would need to defend themselves. However this invention brings that into disrepute! Does anyone know what I am referring to?"
The class looked up at him blankly. Sirius leaned over to James "I've got no idea what he's on about, he seems pretty excited about whatever it is though."
Professor Wolfson surveyed the class. "No? Well let me educate you all on the subject. Whether or not this particular invention appears on your exam papers I believe it is something you should all know about. This past autumn a man named Damocles Belby, do any of you know who that is?"
Hermione raised her hand.
There was a mischievous twinkle in Professor Wolfson's eyes, "Yes, Miss?"
"Granger, sir. Damocles Belby is a potioneer, most famous for-" she stopped herself and James was sure some future knowledge was about to slip. "-who recently became famous for the invention of the Wolfsbane potion. I remember now, professor. That's the invention you were referring to."
At this all the Marauders bristled. James knew then that this must be something to do with werewolves. He wondered what this potion did, was it a way of poisoning werewolves maybe? James was starting to wonder if his first impression of Professor Wolfson was correct. If Professor Wolfson could be this happy about something that could hurt innocent people forced to go through the transformation every month then he'd make sure to prank the bigot. He turned to Remus, leaning over the gap between their desks and whispered "do you know anything about this?"
Remus shook his head. He looked very uncomfortable. James knew Remus hated lessons on werewolves.
"Very good Miss Granger! Now could you tell us what this potion does?"
"It allows people to keep their human minds during their transformation into a wolf, rendering them harmless."
Teddy had a wild smile on his face and maybe he was imagining it but he swore he saw him look over to a very pale Remus."Excellent Miss Granger. Ten points to Gryffindor."
Hermione smiled. James could tell they had another bookworm in their midst. Next to him Remus' quill had slipped from his fingers and his hand shook slightly. Sirius moved the ink-pot away from Remus' shaking hands and clapped his friend on the back. "I guess I know what I'm spending my Christmas money on," he whispered.
"From that I hope even the sleepiest amongst you have realized that today's lesson will be on Werewolves."
Please do let me know what you think! You can expect a new chapter soon!
