Amane and Nene were concerned about the sudden change of events these last few weeks between Tsukasa and Mei. They thought maybe they had their first fight but that wasn't the case as Tsukasa seemed gloomy but for another different reason and Mei didn't even look upset, she looked embarrassed.
They figured something happened when they went out.
But they couldn't exactly guess although Nene had a slight suspicion so she decided to confront Mei subtly.
"I really don't know if I'm good at drawing." Nene laughed nervously as she tried to draw her pet hamster. She figured taking art lessons from Mei would be an easy way to get her to confess.
Today though Mei looked more distracted than usual, she seemed pissed off and even borderline violent with her drawing. She was breaking her pencil every five seconds.
Nene just continued her drawing. She wasn't sure why her sudden behavior only made it even more suspicious. Yesterday apparently Tsukasa got a love letter from some mysterious secret admirer. Natsuhiko congratulated him on his success and usually, Amane would have too if he had not noticed Tsukasa throwing the love letter away.
From then on Mei seemed to get rather… angry. Which prompted Nene's current suspicions.
"So Tsukasa got a love letter yesterday-"
Crack
She flinched as the pencil Mei was holding broke in half, she continued anyway. "I know you two seemed to be on bad terms but I think you two should work it out and be there for him, it's the first time a girl has ever liked him so-"
Crack
"So… please make up, okay?" She sweatdropped as Mei's aura became threatening, the things she does for the people she cares about.
"We're not on bad terms." She said as she attempted to draw for the millionth time today.
"Then why haven't you guys been talking?" Nene observed Mei curiously. She was definitely pissed off and dare she say it- she almost looked jealous.
"Just stuff came up… we're both trying to get into the art program so we've been busy." Her pencil broke again causing her to groan.
Nene sweatdropped. "I mean… doesn't seem like it…" She felt like she was treading on thin ice.
Mei suddenly blushed and looked rather sad, her eyes were full of tears. "When you first discovered you liked Amane-kun… how did you just… know? And how did you even get the courage to confess…"
Nene stared at her with wide eyes. She didn't expect to be asked such a question. "Well…" She thought back to her middle school days. "My heart would beat a lot when around him and I would get nervous whenever I would see him or he would look at me, I'm sure I was a red hot mess just thinking about him… I always felt extremely happy and silly and… well, when confessing I was sloppy of course, I got into this whole drama with-"
Mei interrupted. "Yes I know, you lied to Amane-kun."
Nene deadpanned but sighed and continued. "Anyway… I just told him how I felt, what I've been feeling… I decided to be honest." She smiled at her as she finished her tale.
Mei's mouth was slightly open, her cheeks were a pink hue. "I see…" She looked away feeling embarrassed, she had nobody to ask, she figured she could get advice from Nene right? "Nene-chan…"
"Hm?"
"I kissed Tsukasa."
"...WHAT!?" Nene figured they were probably just nervous around each other because they discovered their feelings for the other. She did not expect a bombshell. "When? How? Why? SPILL THE TEA." She shook Mei.
Mei's face was scarlet as she recalled the events. "We were just talking and we went out for a walk, sat on a bench, suddenly I couldn't help it and I kissed him!" She covered her face in embarrassment. "I totally ruined our friendship!"
She was a blubbering mess as Nene tried to get the story straight. "So you two kissed."
"Yes."
"On the lips."
"Yes."
"Did he kiss you back?"
Mei paused as she thought back to the kiss. She was freaking out so much she didn't even stop to think of what Tsukasa's reaction was or if he even kissed back. She couldn't exactly think straight either, her brain was heating up.
"I don't know!" She hit her head against her canvas. "I feel so stupid right now."
Nene sweatdropped again and wondered if Amane was having any luck.
He was in the same predicament honestly.
He noticed Tsukasa staring at the friendship bracelet Mei had made for him with such fondness. This definitely confirmed to him that they didn't get into a fight.
"How come you two don't talk anymore?" He asked as he sat down on his desk facing Tsukasa.
Tsukasa frowned. "We're busy…"
Amane narrowed his eyes. "With what?"
He shrugged. "Art stuff."
Amane sighed as he felt like facepalming. "Tsukasa you can't lie to me, we're twins and I know you better than anyone else."
Tsukasa groaned and glared at Amane. "I don't want to talk about it!"
He wasn't going to back down, he was going to get Tsukasa to talk one way or another. "Tsukasa, talk to me, we promised!"
Tsukasa flinched at that, darn Amane and using their promise against him. "Fine! I… I… I kissed Mei!" He buried his face in his hands as his face grew hot.
Amane went wide-eyed at the revelation, Nene had suspicions but he didn't expect it to be the case. "Do you like her?" He asked, Tsukasa nodded, still not looking at him. "Did she kiss you back?" He asked again, wondering if this was the problem.
Except Tsukasa froze and looked up realizing he wasn't even sure how Mei reacted or if she kissed back. "I don't know!" He hit his head against his desk. "It's the first time someone has ever made me feel this way… my heart won't stop beating."
Amane nodded agreeing with his sentiment. Despite having dated Nene for a year now he still got nervous around her. "Yeah, I understand that." He smiled softly at his twin, Tsukasa always thought he wouldn't be able to feel anything for anyone… look at him now.
Tsukasa groaned. "I don't know what to do."
"Just tell her how you feel," Amane advised.
Tsukasa deadpanned. "Had you done that you would have been with Nene-chan sooner." He smirked at him.
Amane rolled his eyes. "Shut up, it's exactly why I'm telling you to go tell her, don't make my same mistakes." He grabbed Tsukasa by his shoulders. "You like her don't you?"
"Yes."
"You want to hold her?"
"Yes!"
"Please her!?"
"YES!"
"THEN YOU GOTTA GOTTA TRY A LITTLE TENDERNESS!" Amane said in a sing-song -like voice. "Girls like that romantic stuff."
Tsukasa's eyes shined as he looked at his brother in admiration. "Yes, sir!" He saluted.
…
It had been a while since Kou and Mitsuba had felt this fucking nervous. They knew the idea of meeting each other's parents wasn't going to be easy at all.
For now, they would tell Kou's parents, and then depending on their reaction they would tell Mitsuba's. For the most part, they expected them to be warm and welcoming since neither had ever seen to have any hate towards certain groups of people.
Kou entered his home like usual with Mitsuba in tow. He grabbed his hand and smiled at him in reassurance. Everything will be fine, what's the worst that could happen anyway?
Kou walked in and greeted his parents, Mitsuba did the same, they already knew him after all. They merely thought he was just a friend. Teru observed the pair from the living where he was playing with Tiara. They were having a tea party with her stuffed animals.
Kou squeezed Mitsuba's hand, it was now or never. "Mom… dad… I have something important to discuss with you guys." He gulped as his parents stopped what they were doing and faced their son.
"What's the matter, Kou?" His mother said, prompting him to proceed.
Kou looked at Mitsuba one last time for reassurance. "I wanted to tell you guys that I'm… I'm gay and I'm dating Sousuke." He held Mitsuba's hand tightly.
Mitsuba couldn't help but blush and look down.
Teru wasn't even surprised, he figured that shit out by himself. Tiara clapped and yelled congratulations to them. Kou felt great knowing his siblings were showing approval but his parents…
They didn't show any emotion.
They were stoic as they looked at each other. Then their stares turned into glares and the two teens felt a sudden fear. Their worst-case scenario ended up coming true as Kou's parents demanded to talk to Mitsuba's parents.
And so Mitsuba was forced to come out to his own parents that same night. He said the same thing Kou said to his own. And their reactions were instant. They were yelling, pointing fingers, Kou's parents started doing the same.
"IT WAS PROBABLY YOUR SON'S FAULT!"
"NO, IT WAS YOURS!"
Mitsuba was tearing up as he held onto Kou for dear life. Teru was protecting them both from the yelling adults in the room. He had sent Tiara to her room, she didn't understand why her parents were mad that Kou got a boyfriend.
"You two need to break up and never see each other again!" All four adults agreed as they looked at them expecting them to follow orders.
Except they didn't want that and neither did Teru.
"Are you guys even hearing yourselves!?" He yelled. "There's nothing wrong with them loving each other!"
Kou hugged Teru from behind. "Teru-nii! It's okay!" His parents are likely to kick Teru out for defending them and he didn't want that. He wanted his brother to focus on his college career.
"It's okay Kou," Teru reassured him as he stood his ground.
"They're breaking up, that's final!" His mom yelled out, everyone nodded in agreement.
Mitsuba was shaking as tears fell down, breaking up with Kou? How? After a year of loving each other so much… he couldn't let him go.
"I refuse!" He yelled out but was met with his dad's grip on his arm.
"YOU WILL AND THAT'S FINAL!"
Mitsuba continued to struggle as his grip grew tighter. Kou was about to jump in and defend his boyfriend but his own parents held him back while Teru continued his protests.
"Hurry up!" Kou's parents yelled out.
They could see each other's pain as they stared at one another. They knew what they had to do in order to protect each other.
"Sousuke… we're through." He shut his eyes as he tried not to look, not to cry. He had to be strong… for Mitsuba.
"Yeah…" Was all Mitsuba managed to say before he was dragged away with his parents.
Once they left Kou ran up to his room to lock himself in while Teru yelled at his parents over what they did. They weren't having any of it, they were stubborn in thinking that what they did was best for Kou.
He couldn't get through to them at all and even threatened to kick him out if he didn't shut up. Teru was torn into pieces knowing Kou is very upset right now.
Kou couldn't even sleep properly as he cried all night. When he did all he could do was dream about Mitsuba.
Mitsuba was the same, he couldn't stop crying and wanted to desperately call Kou but his parents deleted all contact from him.
School was going to suck.
And sure enough, it did.
Kou moved seats away from Mitsuba, orders from his parents. If he didn't then he would be transferred out of school and he didn't want that. It hurt to see Mitsuba's heart shatter as he moved his stuff to another desk completely away from him.
He figured this would happen but it still hurt.
The two teens remained at a distance from each other throughout the week which concerned their friends. They were just barely trying to resolve the situation between Mei and Tsukasa- now they had a new one!?
They can't catch a break.
Nene sat next to a depressed Mitsuba who was barely eating these days. She tapped him on the shoulder. He looked up momentarily before looking back down sadly.
This set off alarm bells. "Mitsuba what's wrong?" She asked him.
He wouldn't respond, he wouldn't even look up or knowledge she was still there.
She went to comfort him by getting closer. "Hey-" She was immediately met with a glare.
"Go away, I don't want you to bother me… go be with your boyfriend." He said in the bitterest tone she has ever heard in her life. Especially that last part.
Did they break up? No that's impossible, those two adore each other so why… "Mitsuba-kun… what happened?"
Mitsuba burst into tears as he laid down on Nene's lap and told her everything, it was a bit incomprehensible but she got the main gist of it. It was horrible that those two were forced to separate because of their parent's disapproval.
"Shh, shh, everything is going to be okay Mitsuba." She tried to soothe him as best as she could but that was impossible. He must have been holding himself back this whole time.
She suddenly felt him heat up- she felt his forehead and noticed he had a fucking fever. In a panic, she grabbed Mitsuba and rushed him to the nurse's office. They took his temperature and sure enough he was sick. Nene went to go find Kou.
Kou was having a bad time on his own. His friends were wondering why he looked so down and why he wasn't talking to Mitsuba.
"Kou you need to tell us what's wrong." Amane put his hand on his shoulder for comfort.
He knew… he knew they were just worried but he didn't want to talk right now. "I know… thanks, Amane-senpai."
Everyone just looked at him in concern. Tsukasa being the semi know it all figured it all out by now but unless specifically asked he won't tell anyone, clearly Kou doesn't want to talk about it.
Therefore he won't say anything.
Things were quiet until Nene came running towards them panting for air. Amane quickly got up and went to her side in order to help her from not falling over.
"Mitsuba-kun is at the nurse's office!" She exclaimed and that was all it took for Kou to immediately react and run to check on him.
Everyone behind Kou who was frantic as he made his way to the nurse's office. Mei who was passing by looked at everyone running towards the nurse's office with wide eyes.
What the fuck did she miss out on?
She joined behind the group who was being held back by the nurse, she only let Kou inside to see Mitsuba.
She tapped Tsukasa's shoulder, completely forgetting she was literally still avoiding him. "Hey what's going on?"
Tsukasa, also forgetting why he was avoiding Mei, responded. "Mitsuba-kun is sick apparently, Nene was frantic because his fever was pretty high."
Mei stood there in shock, she's never seen Mitsuba get sick, heck, none of them have gotten sick at all so this was new. She stiffened as Tsukasa grabbed her hand and pulled her away from the group in order to talk to her privately.
"Don't tell anyone but I suspect they broke up… by force." He whispered to her.
She went wide-eyed. "Wait what!? I'm gone for a few days and shit goes down! I swear you guys can't survive without me." She joked as a way to ease the tension but hearing Tsukasa say such a thing shocked her. A break up by force? That's impossible unless… they decided to come out to their parents… "Oh shit, you think…?"
Tsukasa nodded. "If I recall Kou-kun said he had an important thing to discuss with Mitsuba-kun." He looked behind him to make sure nobody was looking at them. He was glad to see they were distracted, he turned back around to face Mei. "I suspect they decided to come out to their parents and they were forced to break up."
Mei had nothing against that logic. It was well known that Kou was planning something with Mitsuba that seemed important. Nobody asked and they never elaborated either, not that it bothered anyone- their business after all. But it made sense why everything just seemed torn to pieces right now. "You're probably not off the mark, honestly all I saw was everyone heading to the nurse's office, had no idea they broke up." She sighed tiredly, so many issues lately.
"Used to new shit popping up every other week," Tsukasa said as he leaned against the wall. He looked at Mei half expecting her to say something but she seemed to be trying to look everywhere but him.
Mei felt extremely nervous looking at Tsukasa right now. Not to mention their friends had problems, now wasn't the time to worry about their kiss.
Meanwhile, Kou was holding Mitsuba's hand. He was currently sleeping, his fever had gone down. His parents were coming to pick him up in a bit so he knew he didn't have much time. He dried his tears and gave him a kiss. "I love you." He flinched as Mitsuba tightened the hold on his hand.
"I love you too."
After school…
Amane felt extremely drained today after trying to get Kou to not worry so much once Mitsuba was sent home. Thanks to Nene they knew the gist of what happened, Tsukasa voiced that he had suspicions but didn't want to share them unless told otherwise.
"I can't believe they would do that." Tsukasa glared at nothing in particular as he remembered the pain his friends were going through.
Amane nodded as he looked around the fridge. "Tell me about it… if someone forced me away from Nene… I'd lose it." The idea was just too much to bear. He can only imagine how agonizing it must be for Kou right now. "You hungry?"
"Yeah."
As Amane looked around for food their parents arrived.
"We're home."
"Welcome back." They said in unison.
Amane began to heat up some chicken nuggets from yesterday as their parents settled in.
They both smiled, it made Tsukasa feel uneasy for some reason.
"We have something to tell you guys." His mother announced cheerfully.
"What?" Tsukasa said, Amane was getting their chicken nuggets out of the microwave and onto a plate.
Their parents looked at each other, smiling brightly. It was clearly something good and yet… Tsukasa felt uneasy.
"Well, you see…" His father began. "We got a promotion!" He cheered.
"Which means we're moving to Tokyo."
Craaaaack
"AMANE!?" His mother yelled as she went to go check on Amane.
Tsukasa got up as well and saw Amane standing in the kitchen with the plate of their chicken nuggets on the floor, glass shards scattered- he was pale.
And honestly… Tsukasa didn't blame him at all.
