Chapter 4 - Planning Ahead
"You know, I've been thinking."
Sam winked as she pulled on a pair of socks. "Well, that's dangerous."
Jack propped himself on his elbow in bed. "You laugh."
She leaned back and kissed him, her heart so full with joy that she was afraid it might burst. "What were you thinking about?"
"I was thinking about that wedding Vala described last year when we helped Marty with his Wormhole X-Treme script."
"You do realize that they probably haven't even started filming the first episode of the new season, right?"
Jack shook two fingers in the air the way he did when he wanted her to stop explaining things. "Ack, Carter."
She grinned. "Right, Jack. Last year. Wedding. Wormhole X-Treme. What about it?"
"We have a Thor on this ship."
Sam turned to face him. "A holographic representation that probably knows nothing about weddings—let alone weddings from our planet."
"Still. . ."
There was something in his eyes that she didn't expect, something that made her stop and take notice. "Jack, what are you saying?"
He reached into the nightstand drawer on his side and pulled out something so tiny she couldn't see it, concealed in his hand. "I was gonna give this to you tonight, but if the way Mitchell rang you this morning is any indication of how busy you're going to be, I thought I'd be improvise."
He sat up as he presented a solitaire diamond ring to her.
"Jack. . ."
"Marry me."
He wasn't the first person to ask her the question. He wasn't even the second, but in that moment, she realized he was the only person she'd ever answer without any doubts. "Yes."
His face broke into a grin as their lips pressed together into a passionate kiss. "And Thor can officiate our wedding?"
Sam broke into a laugh as he slipped the ring onto her finger. "As long as he doesn't insist that function isn't possible."
"We'll have to convince him then."
She studied the ring, now fastened to her left hand. "Jack, how did you—?"
"You're not the only one who can use the Asgard matter converter. Daniel was surprisingly enthusiastic."
She shook her head as she leaned in and kissed him again, caressing his cheeks with all the tenderness she felt for him. "I love you."
"I love you, too."
She sighed as she heard another chime from outside. "I wish I could stay here and celebrate with you, but duty calls."
He squeezed her hand. "How about we compromise, and I bring you lunch?"
She smiled. "I'd like that."
"You know, there's something to be said for planning a wedding while stranded on a spaceship. No budget. Limited guests. Set venue."
"All about those silver linings, huh?"
Jack shrugged with a charming smile. "What can I say? I like to keep a positive attitude."
She kissed him once more. "I gotta go to work, Mr. Positive Attitude."
"As long as you take some time off for the honeymoon."
She brushed a thumb over his cheek as she nodded. "I think I can make that deal. Where should we go?"
He shrugged as if she didn't already know the answer. "I was thinking of a little place, nice view. Not too touristy, but I don't intend to let you out of my sight anyway, so we're good."
She leaned in for another kiss, a strange gratitude welling in her chest that she didn't have to hide her ever growing affection for this man in front of her. "Can't wait."
Dressed in a white dress she'd gotten the Asgard matter converter to manufacture for her, Sam's jaw dropped as she caught sight of the mess hall now bedecked in white flowers and ivy with a white arch draped in tulle. She reached for her fiancé's hand. "Jack."
"Cool!"
Sam turned to Daniel and Teal'c. "Did you guys do all of this?"
Daniel shrugged, a pleasant smile on his face. "Couldn't have you guys getting married without any fanfare, could we?"
"Oh, like you weren't complaining for the last two hours as we set this all up?"
Sam turned an interested smile to Daniel, who tried to pretend like Vala hadn't just spilled one of his secrets.
"Okay, so Vala studied bridal decoration a little more intently than I did."
"Only a little?"
Daniel threw a look in Sam's direction as if she should stop helping.
"I did download every bridal magazine available onto that tablet you brought, Daniel."
The archaeologist rolled his eyes. "You realize that tablet was for work, right?"
"I still can't believe it only took a week to figure out how to get Thor to officiate," Mitchell said as he gestured at the hologram.
"It is my privilege. O'Neill, shall we begin?"
Sam's heart fluttered as she and Jack exchanged a look.
"Ready, Carter?"
She squeezed his hand as Vala handed her a bouquet of white flowers. "Ready, Jack."
The ceremony was simple, just using the traditional vows to love, honor, and cherish one another, but its simplicity was what made it so perfect.
Daniel and Vala erupted into shouts of encouragement as she and Jack exchanged their first kiss as husband and wife. Mitchell and Teal'c moved the chairs out of the way as music played on the ship's speakers.
Without needing any further prompting, Jack pulled Sam into his arms as they swayed to some sappy love song. Sam closed her eyes as she leaned her cheek against his, allowing her mind to shut off and enjoy the moment.
"Did you ever think that the Ori would be the reason we got married?"
Unable to restrain her laughter, Sam dropped her forehead to his shoulder as they continued dancing.
"What?"
She looked up into his eyes, humbled by how unguarded they were with her. She could see a thousand lifetimes flash in them, see something of who he was at his core. "We should have done this years ago."
He gave a half-shrug as he whipped her away into a dizzying turn. "I told you."
"When did you learn how to do this?"
"Another life."
She didn't press, only suspected that he'd learned to waltz for his first wedding. Though it might not have worked for everyone, it was okay with her that Jack kept the memories of his first marriage private. In an odd way, it made her feel safe, like no matter how things ended for them, he'd always protect her.
Besides, she already knew what she needed to know. Jack had loved Sara and Charlie, but those days were over, and there was something special about the way Jack O'Neill loved his family—the way he still loved them. She'd seen it even then. She was just glad that she had a chance to be on the receiving end of that fierce, unyielding love.
Jack caught her eye, a question brewing there that seemed almost on the tip of his tongue.
She let her fingers feather the short hairs at the back of his neck, smiling as a shiver ran down Jack's spine at her touch. "I love you."
"I love you, too." He pulled her closer again. "Any chance, we've done our duty and can start the honeymoon?"
She giggled. "You're insatiable, you know that?"
"I have ten years of restraint pent up, Carter. It's a wonder I don't ignore social convention and clear this mess hall myself."
She leaned in beside his ear. "That's O'Neill to you."
He groaned. "Samantha. . ."
She faked a loud, long yawn. "Sorry, guys. This has been lovely, but all the planning has me completely exhausted."
Daniel shuddered as Vala waggled her eyebrows suggestively at the couple. "Oh, sure. Exhausted."
Though Sam felt her cheeks redden, she tried to play off her innocence. "What?"
"You have General O'Neill leaving before cake? Like my grandma always says, if the horse doesn't drink the water, doesn't mean he isn't thirsty."
The whole group turned blank looks to the Air Force Colonel.
He just shrugged. "I always just smiled and nodded until—"
Daniel interjected. "She gave you a macaroon, we know."
Mitchell exchanged baffled looks with the archaeologist as Jack gripped Sam's hand and tried to guide her to their quarters.
"No, wait! General, Sam has to throw the bouquet."
Sam turned back to Vala. "Uh, you can have it. You're the only other girl here."
Vala shook her head, her full black waves exaggerating her emotion. "That's not the same, and you know it. You actually have to throw it."
"Do you actually know what that particular tradition is supposed to mean?"
"Of course, I do, Daniel. It's a quaint superstition which is supposed to show who the next bride is going to be."
Daniel threw her a placating smile. "Yes and do you actually have any prospects?"
Vala harrumphed before she turned to Teal'c. "Muscles, how about it? If I catch the bouquet, we set a date?"
Teal'c said nothing, merely raised his eyebrow at being included in the conversation.
"See, he's very excited, and we're going to be very happy together."
Jack's face contorted in disgust. "He didn't say that."
Vala crossed her arms, a smug grin taking full command of her expression. "He didn't have to."
Sam sighed. She knew that this conversation would only get more confusing the longer it went on, so she grabbed her bouquet and tossed it to the alien. "How's that?"
Jack took Sam's hand again, and she rested her cheek on his shoulder as they walked out of the mess hall.
Vala moved to follow them, only to have Daniel grab her by the arm so she was stuck back with the rest of the guests. "Sam, Sam! That didn't count! You have to throw it over your shoulder. . ."
When Sam and Jack had finally ditched the rest of the wedding guests and found the sanctity of their private chambers, Sam snaked her arms around her new husband's neck and kissed him soundly. "Now, where were we?"
