On September 4, 1962, Chas and Drew, now five years old, were old enough to attend kindergarten.

On that day, Chas was taken to Third Street Elementary School by his mother, Shirley. Drew was taken by his father, Lou.

Both boys would never forget the words of advice their respective parents gave them…

As Chas was about to leave his mother's car for the kindergarten classroom, she said to him, "Remember, Charles, you're the sweetest boy in the world and very special to me. Just don't talk to strangers."

Chas smiled and said, "Thanks, mom."

As for Drew, here's what his father said to him: "Andrew, you're as dumb as a mule and twice as ugly! If a strange man offers you a ride, I say take it! Strangers are one thing, it's the family you've got to look out for!"

This left Drew feeling very discouraged.

For the next two hours on their first day of kindergarten, Chas felt good about himself, while Drew's own self-esteem was poor. Drew was so upset about what his father had said to him that he was unable to respond to the teacher's questions. In fact, the only thing he ever said that morning was, "Here," in response to the teacher's roll call.

During recess, Chas was minding his own business, playing on the kindergarten monkey bars, when Drew approached him and said, "Hey, Finster! You're not as special as your mom says you are!"

"Huh?" asked Chas.

"Come on down, Finster!"

But Chas, who was scared of Drew, refused.

To that, Drew cried out, "Finster! You're as a stubborn as a mule and twice as ugly!"

But the words he shouted were so loud they were heard by the groundskeeper, who dragged Drew to the principal's office despite his protests…

Many years later, in September 1993, it was the first day of kindergarten for Drew's daughter, Angelica. Drew said to her, "Now, Angelica, on your first day of school, I'd like to pass on the words of advice your grandfather gave me…"

But Drew remembered that his father had said, "Andrew, you're as dumb as a mule and twice as ugly! If a strange man offers you a ride, I say take it! Strangers are one thing, it's the family you've got to look out for!"

With that, Drew grumbled, "Lousy traumatic childhood!"
