Chapter Six
Several minutes earlier…
Alan sighed in relief as Charlie finally agreed to go for a drive with him, as he wanted his youngest to take a break from grading papers for at least a half hour.
"Dad, it's a bit urgent to do…" Charlie had protested
"No it isn't," Alan said smiling, "You said those papers weren't due back for at least a week, remember?"
This shut Charlie up as Alan decided they should drive around a couple neighborhoods to see if there were new people around. Alan also wanted Charlie to people watch with him, just observe people with his eyes, and not with his math skills, though that probably wouldn't be possible to do.
They were only on the road for not even thirty seconds when their phone went off, which Alan took with him in case Don got out early and he would join them, although from the sound of it, that wasn't too likely.
'Still,' Alan thought cheerfully, 'If not today, I'll make sure that he might be able to do it this week, as he has really improved in the years since he returned from Albuquerque.'
Alan pushed those thoughts, as he knew that while they couldn't change the past but they could make up for it and he was so glad that everyone was good now and he was really glad to have grandchildren now and his sons were happy.
Alan answered the phone quickly, putting it on speakerphone and both of the Eppes men were surprised by what they heard on the phone.
"Alan, Charlie, this is Jack Anderson, I was that person that Alonzo Bergner and John Sampson was after a few years ago."
This caused Alan to stop the car and look at the phone with shock, as it was something that everyone had hoped to put behind them. The FBI tried tracking down any more leads but over the next couple years it became pointless and everyone decided that the two men were just using a cover story to cover up for the mob.
"Why are you calling us?" Alan demanded
"Because Don Eppes is in trouble and someone is going to take him hostage tonight if we don't do something quick," The voice answered
"Who is going to take him?" Charlie asked, now getting scared for his older brother's safety
"A man named Darin Thorne, listen he is a dangerous man but I need you guys to meet me at the FBI building, as they are making their move tonight. Be there in a few minutes"
Then the call went dead, leaving Alan and Charlie wondering what was going on but they immediately knew that they needed to go to the FBI and see if the man is really telling the truth but their instincts were telling them to go.
"Don's going to be mad at us one way or another but honestly, that is the least of my worries," Charlie said when Alan started heading to the federal building.
"Mine too," Alan said, as he sped to the building
Outside…
Alan and Charlie quickly got out of the car and ran towards the nearest elevator and the ride to Don's floor was incredibly nerve-racking, as they had no idea as to what they were going to do if Don really was in trouble.
Then as they exited the elevator on Don's floor, they saw Don being dragged into another elevator with the man dragging him stopping and realizing that he had just been seen and then three others, one of them possibly being Jack Anderson coming out of the doorway and it soon became clear that it was going to be a serious problem for everyone involved.
