I have updated the story, added more depth, I hope you like it, will be uploading a chapter a day, still using my previous work but changing it up (A LOT). Thank you for your patience, feedback always welcome.

This is just for fun, to combat lock down boredom.

It was a dark night tonight for the village people, they had received word from the palace that King Klaus was looking for a wife. Normally this would be a reason to celebrate, one of the girls would be selected to be his wife, live a life full of luxuries, travel and eat the most amazing food from around the world... Sadly they all new the harsh reality, the king was not a kind man, he was brutal, spoilt and had even been known to kill girls for looking at him the wrong way, or not doing as he asked. All the girls in the village were scared of King Klaus, except for one, Caroline Forbes.

Caroline was a beautiful young girl, with soft blonde hair that fell below her shoulders and blue eyes that resembled the sea, she was one of the toughest girls in the village, and everyone knew not to mess with her.
They had learned this lesson when Tyler Lockwood, taunted Caroline and her friends one morning when they were picking apples.
Caroline had thrown an apple right at him and broke his nose, after that nobody would mess with the girls when Caroline was around.

It had been a whole month since the news had reached them that the king was looking for a wife, all the girls had to send a portrait of themselves to the palace for the king to choose the girls he would like to attend his ball.
Caroline didn't think she would be chosen, and carried on with her life as normal. One night Caroline couldn't sleep and she decided to sneak out of their hut and go for a walk, Caroline knew it was wrong, but she loved to sit by the lake of a night, and see the moon reflect against its beautiful water.

As she sat by the water, she heard a rustling noise from behind her, and she quickly grabbed a rock to defend herself. When she turned around, Caroline was shocked, standing in front of her was the most beautiful man she had ever seen, he had dirty blonde hair, with small soft curls on his head, and blue eyes that could match her own, oh those lips, that perfect jawline, he truly was perfect Caroline thought to herself.

"Sorry Love, I didn't mean to startle you" The man said with the most beautiful accent Caroline had ever heard.

"That's OK, I just wasn't expecting anyone to be here, I don't normally come across anyone when I'm here. I am Caroline by the way, and you are?" Caroline was so curious to know who this beautiful man was.

Klaus looked at her shocked, he had not come across a girl that didn't recognize him before, she spoke so confidently, only noble girls have ever spoken to him like that before, and even then, it didn't always end well for them.

"Nik, my name is Nik" Klaus decided he didn't want her to know he was the king, he was so intrigued by her confidence that he wanted to sit in her company and just talk, talk about anything, about the moon, the stars, her hopes and dreams, anything.

"Well its very nice to meet you Nik, I must say you don't look like you are from around here, your clothes certainly aren't. Do you work at the palace?
Have you seen the horrible king? Is it true what they say about him, does he really kill girls?" Caroline trailed off, this is something she often does when shes uncomfortable, but Klaus thought it was rather cute.

Klaus didn't want to lie to the girl "I am from the palace" but he also didn't want her to know he was the king, he liked that she wasn't frightened of him. "From what I can tell, the king is a good man deep down, he has only killed people who have tried to hurt his family, he is very protective of them" Klaus said tentatively.

Caroline laughed "Of course you are going to stick up for him, you work for him! if he knew you were bad mouthing him, he would have your head!"Caroline said staring at Nik intently.

Klaus decided to ignore what Caroline had said "Have you been choosing to go to the kings ball?" He asked.

Caroline scoffed "No,I doubt I will be, I sent in my worst portrait, I don't want that nasty king anywhere near me, he would make my life miserable.
I would surely be killed, im far to vocal for my own good, so I'm told" Caroline stated staring intently at Nik. "But if you were to be at the ball,
I think I would like to attend." Caroline said softly, smiling up at Nik.

A booming laugh echoed around them, Caroline looked up and saw Nik, he couldn't contain his laughter, she was the most confident girl he had ever met. "I would very much like that Caroline" Nik bowed softly to Caroline and with that he was gone, he had left her by the lake.

Caroline went home, but every night after their encounter Caroline would go back to the lake and meet Nik, he would bring her treats from the palace,
most of these treats Caroline had not even heard off, but she loved them, she loved every second of their night time lake encounters. He would tell her stories about the palace and the people that lived there. It had been this way for two whole weeks, two weeks of evening strolls with her beloved Nik, so much so that she had forgotten all about King Klaus and his ball.

It was a beautiful morning, Caroline sat outside her hut, when a palace guard had come to deliver the letter they had all been dreading.
Each girl would receive a letter with an acceptance or a declination to go to the ball. The guard left two letters with Caroline's mother.

"Girls, come quickly, we must open your letters, oh I hope u haven't been accepted, please god let our plan have worked" Elizabeth Forbes rattled on to herself.

Elena Caroline's oldest friend, had been taken in by the Forbes family, when her family had been killed by the plague, she had lived with them now for many years and was considered part of the family, to Caroline she was a sister.
Elena had beautiful olive skin with sparkling green eyes and hair so long that all the girls in the village were jealous, she really was a sight to behold.

The girls ran towards Elizabeth who was frantically waving the letters in the air "Who is going first?" Elizabeth asked the girls with a worried look on her face.

"How about we open each others" suggested Elena. Both Caroline and Elizabeth liked this idea, they sat around the fire place and slowly started opening the letters.

"Elena...You've been accepted, oh I'm so sorry Elena, this cant be happening, you have lost so much already, there must be a way we can get you out of this?" Caroline shouted with soft tears rolling down her face. Elena runs towards Caroline grabbing the letter and staring at it in shock.
"Oh God, what am I going to do, this cant be happening, we sent our worst pictures" Elena threw herself into Elizabeth arms and started sobbing violently more violently than when she lost her parents to the plague, or when she watched her brother drown. To Elena this felt worse, it would be like reliving every bad moment, over and over again.

Elizabeth was trying to sooth Elena, she was rocking her back and forth, singing softly in her ear, she didn't know what to say, what could you say, she knew this meant Elena's life was over, even if The king didn't choose to marry her, he would surely use her, and then she would be tainted for any other man, and would end up working in a wenches tavern. She couldn't say any of this to the girls, so she just's sang to Elena until she sobbed no more.

Caroline had taken her letter and gone to the lake, she decided she wanted to open it with Nik, she didn't want to cause her family any more upset.
When Caroline got to the lake, Nik was nowhere to be seen, she waited for hours and hours, but he never came.
It was getting so late, Caroline new she needed to go back home, she got up to start walking, and that's when she noticed, a small piece of parchment paper rolled up and pushed under a rock. Caroline was very curious and decided to have a look.
As she unrolled it, she noticed straight away it was from Nik, it was a beautiful drawing of her sat by the lake laughing, and on the back it said.

My dearest Caroline,
You are probably wondering why I am not here,
I wont be able to come anymore, things at the castle are so tense.
If you are chosen to go to the ball, please go with an open heart,
the king is not as bad as you think.

Nik x

Caroline didn't know what to make of the letter, she was angry he hadn't said goodbye, she might not see him again, she was sad and confused, had she done something to push him away.
She shook her head and pushed those feelings deep inside her, she was Caroline Forbes and she is not weak.

Slowly she pulled open the letter from the palace and her heart sunk when she saw the line that would change her life forever.

You have been accepted to meet King Klaus at his ball.

At the palace

Klaus sat on his thrown with parchment surrounding him "How many did I accept?" He said looking up at his brother and most trusted advisor.

Elijah was Klaus's brother, he was also his advisor and a very Honorable man, Elijah did not want to be king, he had been a very sickly child, so the decision had been made that Klaus would be the heir to the thrown.
"only 100 out of thousands of applicants, this is very bad, we need to find you a wife, without a wife you will not have an heir, and the Mikaelson lineage will not be continued" Klaus cut Elijah off before he could drone on anymore "Oh please brother, I could very easily have an heir, I probably already do, probably have loads, and besides, I will find a wife in a room of five, let alone a room of 100" Klaus said sharply.

Elijah gave Klaus a pointed look "I suggest you do not let that slip to your future wife Niklaus, I doubt very highly any young lady will be pleased with the knowledge that her husband has bedded the entire kingdom" With that Elijah sat down shaking his head, what was he going to do with his brother.

Klaus had started to get annoyed, he couldn't tell his brother about Caroline, his beautiful ball of light, he wanted more than anything for her to be his wife, but once she realizes who he is, he doubts she will even want to talk to him, let alone marry him. "Don't look at me like that Elijah ! not one off them fit my interest! " Klaus said stressed.

Elijah walked towards his brother and gently patted him on the back "I'm sorry brother".

Klaus didn't know what to do, he was so nervous, he didn't know what Caroline would do when she realized he was Nik, would she see me for me, or would she think it was all a part of a bigger plan to hurt her, after all who could ever learn to love a monster.
