Chapter 25. Chimera

Sam entered the infirmary, her eyes quickly picking out the only occupied bed. She strode over to it and sat down in the plastic chair, searching the face of the man in the bed. He looked worried; anxious eyes peering back at her, and Sam felt her anger leeching away.

She had been furious when Pete had shown up out the front of Daniel's house, putting not only her, but her mission and her teammates in jeopardy. But then Osiris had tried to blow him up, and he had almost died right in front of her, and she was suddenly and painfully reminded of watching Daniel die, slow and agonising. She hadn't been able to save Daniel, and she had panicked, in that moment, that she wouldn't be able to save Pete either.

But he had survived. Pete was alive and well and hadn't died because of her and so that had to count for something, right? That had to mean something? A sign that she was headed in the right direction? The right path?

"What I'm about to tell you is classified under section 11-C-9 of the National Security Act." She said finally, watching as the shock on his face was replaced by disbelief.

He snorted derisively. "Chicks with laser beam rings and glowing eyes are classified under 11-C-9?"

She shot him a glare. "Let me talk, will you?"

"Okay." He raised his eyebrows in surrender and settled back against the pillows.

"You're currently in a top-secret military facility known as Stargate Command. In 1928, in Giza, Egypt, archaeologists uncovered an ancient device capable of instantaneous transportation to other planets by means of a sub-space wormhole."

"Aliens! I knew it!" He laughed at her, rolling his eyes. Sam felt her anger flare up again and she forcibly shoved it down. He survived. It means something, she reminded herself.

"I'm not kidding."

She watched the grin slide off his face, melting away like a popsicle in the summer sun. "Okay... Other planets. Wormholes." He swallowed. "Continue."
