Damien ran without thinking, he ran until his lungs felt like there was tiny insects rubbing the insides with sandpaper. He slowed down to a stop, panting. Looking around at his surroundings, he realized he was in Metro, the center of the city. Had he really run that far? It was then he also noticed he was on Alice's street. The sun had started setting...dang he really had blacked out. He continued to walk down the sidewalk, admiring all the apartments, his paws lightly padding the the ground. Damien stopped at the steps of Alice's place. A slight breeze ruffled his fur. 'What am I doing here?' he asked himself.
Alice walked home slowly, thinking about Damien. She didn't know why she was so enraptured with him. Maybe it had to do with the mystery about him, the fact he kept everything to himself, but he seemed open with her. After dropping off his homework, she stopped at the city library so she could catch up on her own homework. As the evening fell, she began to walk home. *Ding* she looked at her phone; it was her cousin. ' Where u at? Mom's wondering...' She decided not to text back cause she was right around the corner. Just as she did, she stopped in her tracks, her heart beating.
"Damien?" his ears perked up, and he turned to the source. "Alice...what's up?" He smiled at her, scratching the back of his head. "I just happened to be in this part of the city." Alice's head tilted the side as she looked at him. "That still doesn't really answer my question. Besides aren't you supposed to be somewhere?" Now it was his turn to look confused. "What do you mean?" "Well your grandma had said you were going to see some friends." 'Friends?' Damien shifted uncomfortably, realizing something. "Wait, what were you doing at my house?"
Alice looked away shyly from his intense gaze, "I dropped off the homework from today, but you weren't there." She began to walk up the steps to her house. "Was that all you really came to my house for?" She turned to see him smirking and taking a step towards her, putting his paw under her chin. "Or did you just miss me, Fluff?" She shivered and blushed as he pulled his hand away, her nose twitching furiously.
Just as he about the say something the door behind Alice opened to reveal an older pure white hare. "What are you two doing out here?" She asked harshly but then smiled, "I'm just kidding, Alice it's time for dinner." She looked at Damien, "You must be Damien." He looked at her, puzzled. The hare rolled her eyes, "Alice here has told me about you, how you protected her. Thank you by the way. I feel better knowing someone will protect my niece." He straightened up a bit, "Just trying to do the right thing, ma'am." "Please don't call me ma'am. Your gonna make me feel old, you can call me Mary. Like I said we're gonna eat, would you like to join us?" Damien shook his head, "No thanks, I actually have to get home." Mary nodded and started to head inside, "It was nice meeting you, I got to finish dinner, join us sometime." He smiled and nodded as she disappeared inside. "I guess I better go. I'll see you around." He said turning around and walking away.
Alice saw something was bothering him, and she jogged after him, grabbing his hand. "Damien...you okay?" The wolf looked at her, a turmoil in his eyes, "Yeah I'm fine." She pursed her lips. "You know...you don't have to lie to me. I'll actually listen." Damien smiled, "Thanks Fluff, but you dont have to worry about me." His usual cockiness came back, "I'm gonna need that paw back, Fluff." She felt her cheeks get hot. "Sorry." He had a small smile, "I gotta go, Fluff but you'll see me tomorrow. Thanks for worrying about me but I'm a tough guy." He turned and started walking away and stopped. "If you really do want to listen...text me later tonight...has anyone ever told you your cute when you blush?" Alice blushed again and saw him smiling at her as he walked around the corner. What was bothering him? Why did he want her to text him?
All Damien could think as he walked home was, 'What did I just get myself into?'
