Damien lead Alice out of the alleyway, "What did she want to talk to you about?" she asked him. He looked at her, considering telling her the truth. Should she know what every predator thinks about prey and predator getting close? He was sure that even she was taught the same thing, hell everyone was.
"Ah, it was nothing, she had just asked me if I wanted to chill with her later, but to be honest I'm not interested. She's been throwing herself at me for 6 months and its not attractive." he said, as he sipped his drink.
She looked up at him as he walked. He was not what she thought he was, and it confused her even more as to why he was letting her in. It seemed so unlike him. "Where are we headed?"
"North Tower, it's a bit cold cause of how high it is, but you can see all of Zootopia. I think you might like it, I usually go there to just think." he said sheepishly. She could see a large tower not too far off, she was surprised that she hadn't noticed all these things.
"How did you come to find all these places?" Alice asked?
He stayed quiet as they walked across the parking lot, stopping in the front of the glass doors, peering inside, he mumbled something as he looked around the inside. That's when she saw a grey wolf, wearing a security uniform walking up to the doors. As he walked up to the doors, she saw he was twice Damiens size, his age was showing with the white streaks on his temples. He had a menacing stare as he pulled out a night stick, making Alice's heart start to bump faster. Damien didn't move, but then yelled, "C'mon man, I don't have all night for you to scare the bunny."
The wolf's straight face broke into a grin, and he pulled out a set of keys, and unlocked the door. "Sorry D, I was just having some fun. My job is pretty boring." He looked down at Alice, "Sorry, about that little lady." She smiled and nodded, feeling herself calm down. "You guys going up to the roof?" The wolf asked looking at both of them.
"Yeah, it's a nice night, and we can't sleep. I promise we won't be up there too long, otherwise I'll have to be carrying Fluff home." Damien answered as he lead Alice to the elevator. "We'll be back, Laurence." The wolf gave them a thumbs up as he watched them through the closing doors.
"You seem to know a lot of people." She commented, before taking a sip of her drink, which was now starting to lose its heat.
"What's that supposed to mean?" There was a edge in his tone, the doors opened, and she could feel a chill rush inside the elevator. Damien quickly walked out, leaving Alice feeling even more confused. Was what she said rude? He stopped at the railing, staring out at the city, she could see his body relax. Walking up to the railing, she gasped lightly. It was beautiful, she could see the snowy tops of Tundra Town, opposite of that the rolling sands of Sahara square, and the trees of the Rainforest District, and all the lights of the main city. She looked up to the night sky, the stars missing in the black sky. "What are you looking for Fluff?"
"I was looking for the stars, that's the only thing about living in the city, you never see the stars...Back home, during the summer me and my family would just sit and enjoy the night sky. My father knows all the names of the stars and constellations." she pulled her hoodie tighter around her, it was cold up here, and saw Damien looking intently at her. "What?"
He shook his head, "It must be nice to just sit and see the stars like that. I've never really seen the stars." A light breeze made his fur fluff out a bit. "You cold Fluff?" He could see her rubbing her arms.
"Sorry this is alot colder than I-" she stopped as he moved behind her, and she could feel something get put on her shoulders, when she looked it was his jacket; and it was warm. "Aren't you cold?"
He chuckled, his breath visible in the air. "Nah, I'm used to the cold besides I have the fur for it." Damien motioned to himself. "Are you warm enough?" She nodded, happy for the extra jacket.
"I have a question for you." Alice said as she pulled the hood over her head.
"What is it?"
"Why are you showing me all these things? And why only me?" She sputtered. She had so many questions but these were the two that were bothering her the most right now.
Damien looked out over the city, unbeknownst to the both of them his tail was lightly curled around Alice. "I guess cause right now...I have a lot of shit on my plate. And I want something different. People are always telling me to remember the "rule" and it's complete bull to me. I'm tired of the monotony. Also I need a friend."
"I understand what you mean when you say you want something different. But what do you mean when you say the "rule?" She asked.
"The one that separates all species. But that's not what's really bothering me..."
"And what is bothering you?" Alice put her hand on his arm.
"It...its my dad. He got out of jail and he's coming back to Zootopia, and that scares me. I don't know if I could face him after everything." He pulled away from her, but looked into her face.
"What about your dad scares you? That you haven't seen him?" She pressed on.
"No, Alice." He runs his paws over his face. "He-" he falls down, leaning against the railing. Alice could see the fear in his eyes, the way his body shook. Without thinking she hugged him. It was hard for her to watch someone who seemed so strong, become so weak. Damien hugs her back, his large form enveloping her, surrounding her in warmth.
"You don't have to tell me...but I'm here for you, whenever you need to talk." She pulled away from a bit looking into his eyes; she could see a deep pain and turmoil. That's when she felt his paw on her cheek.
"That cut Alay gave you healed...its so strange it feels like a million years ago but it was just a few days ago. Thanks Fluff, I-I really needed that." The two stared into each others eyes when he looked away, embarrassed, "How about I get you home?" His usual demeanor came back.
As they walked back to her apartment, they walked in silence, when Alice said. "I don't know if I'll do good staying awake in school tomorrow."
Damien laughed, "I'm sorry. I forgot your not nocturnal like me." He played with her ears, making her laugh. Out of nowhere, a police vehicle pulled up beside them, and a rhino looked down at them from the window. Oh shit..he thought.
"What are you doing out in this hour?" The rhino asked in a gruff voice. Damien started to speak when the rhino asked "Young lady, is this predator bothering?"
Damien rolled his eyes. Anti-predator thinking.. "No sir, my friend is walking me home."
"You sure? He isn't making you lie?" The rhino eyed him when she shook her head. "What's your name son? Let me see some ID."
Alice stepped in front of Damien, surprising him "No. You don't have to. He hasn't done anything wrong or given you probable cause. Your just hounding him cause he's a predator. I'm vouching for him. Now sir if you don't have anything else for us. I really do need to get home." She grabbed Damiens paw, leading him away. The cop just watching them walk away, before driving away.
"How did you know he wouldn't follow us?" Damien asked her as they walked.
"My uncle is a lawyer in Bunnyburrow. And he let me read some of his books when he lived with us."
They stopped in front of her place. "Alice...er..thanks for taking a walk with me. And helping me with that cop and...just listening to me." 'You really didn't say anything to her, there on top of the tower.' He told himself.
"I told you I would always listen, and if you ever need me..I'm here for you. I'll see you tomorrow." She squeezed his paw and walked up the steps to her door. Waving goodbye to her, he started heading home. Glancing back, and watching him walk away, she thought. ' What will tomorrow be like? What is this feeling I have in my chest? And most of all, what did his father do that haunts him so much?' When she got inside and had crept to her room, she saw that his jacket was still around her. For some reason, the thought made her smile.
It was taking him awhile, he had to take care of some business before getting to the city. Now that was done he was going to be reunited with his son. He'd heard he was something great now, one of the top football players. He could maybe go to college. As he climbed into a ratty faded car, he looked at the distant tops of buildings in the middle of the city, Zootopia. "I'll be home soon, Damien." He said as he drove in the direction of the buildings.
