Damiens eyes opened to bright sunlight, and someone poking his foot, he looked down to see GG looking at him, "Your late for school, Damien." he stretched, yawning widely, and got up off his bed.
He rubbed his eyes, and looked at the clock, it said 9:00 a.m. 'Damn, Coach isn't gonna be happy.' Damien thought to himself. When he arrived at school, he was greeted with the usual hoots and hollers from his classmates for being late. He looked around the room, looking for Fluff, and saw that she wasn't in the class. He felt a pit of unease in his stomach from seeing that.
Alice had been late to school just like Damien but instead of going to class late, she had decided to just go to the library. She needed to think over the whole thing with Damien from last night. He confused her so much with how he pulled her in and introduced her to his world. Why would he do that with her? "Since when do you ditch class?" she felt a warm breath on the back of her neck, along with a familiar voice.
She turned to look up at Damien, who smiled down at her. "You okay, Fluff?"
Snapping out of her stupor, "Yeah, I just didn't want everyone looking at me so I decided not to go to class. I'm sure you don't worry about things like that, with you being so popular and all." she teased him, as she gathered her things.
"Popularity isn't everything, you know. It's not like I enjoy it." he said, as they started walking out of the library. That's when Alice ran right into Alay, the arctic fox.
Both of them fell down, dropping their things but Damien had reached out and grabbed Alice's wrist keeping her from falling. Alay fell on her back, and right away went for Alice but Damien pushed her behind him. "Move Damien, let that bitch face me."
"No Alay, calm down. Your not gonna fight over something as stupid as that." he answered her calmly. As he blocked her path to Alice, she got fustrated. Alay reached up and slapped him, which causes him to snarl, till Alice placed her hand on his back, in which he relaxed and just pushed his way through Alay, pulling Alice with him.
After he had walked her to class, Alice stopped him. "Hey Damien...thanks. You don't-"
"Stop. Just get used to fact that I'll keep an eye on you, okay?" He patted the top of her head. "You should come by later, GG is making some really good food tonight." Alice looks at confused as he walks away to class. Why is he so open with me?
Later after school, they walked slowly to his house, and stopped at shops. All the while Alice watched Damien and the way he was, it seemed like something was bothering him. She looked at the scar on his face, it was a thick line along with two smaller lines in either side of it. It almost looked like claw marks. "Damien...where did you get your scar?" She asks hesitantly.
The smile that had been on his face, quickly falls off his face, replaced by a stern look. "Do you really want to know?" She nods at him, making him grimace..."C'mon walk with me then Fluff." He leads her to his house, thinking before saying anything. "I used to have a family you know, it wasn't always just me, GG and my sister." Alice felt her stomach moving around, uneasy about the whole subject.
"I had a mom and another sister..and a dad. My mom and sister were foxes...and my dad was a wolf, obviously. My dad was...different...he was a nightmare to live with. Moving to be with GG was a blessing." He looked at the blue sky, avoiding Alice's gaze.
"It still feels like there's more to the story.." she says.
He gives a dry laugh, "There always does huh? You know the scar on my face? That was my dad, his way of showing me he 'loved' me." She could see his whole body seem to grow weak at the memory of his dad. He seemed so fragile. Then he shook his head and his eyes brightened again. "C'mon Fluff." He grabbed her paw and almost dragged her as he pulled her towards his house.
She wondered what had changed his attitude till she saw GG and Star waiting on the porch for them. He let her her paw go as he ran at Star, making the little fox laugh as he picked her up. "Hey Star. Why you waiting for me?" He hugged GG.
"I wanted to meet your 'girlfriend.'" She kissed his cheek, wrapping her arms around his neck.
He seemed a little embarrassed by what she said but said nothing about it. "Well if you wanted to meet her, why don't you say hi?" He winked at Alice, who just shook her head, smiling. The kit just shook her head and faced away from Alice. "Aw don't be shy, Star." But she continued to have her face buried in his neck. He carried her inside to be greeted by the other young foxes. He looked at Alice, "Give me a few minutes I got to take these guys to the room."
Alice watched him lead the small group upstairs, smiling. He seemed so happy, he couldn't be so sad and haunted...but he was..his dad...did he kill his mother and sister? And did he try to kill Damien?
"What are you thinking about my dear?" GG surprised her.
"I look at Damien and he seems so happy but when he's with me...he shows how much pain he's really in. What has he been through?" Alice blurted. Then she realised her mistake.
Before she could say anything, GG held up her hand. "Why do you ask, Alice? Is it cause of the mystery? Or because you actually care?"
"Of course I care about Damien. He's my friend. I'm just not sure how he views me, I mean I know we've only known each other a short time but I feel a deep connection to him."
Meanwhile, Damien was playing with the kits, trying to keep them busy. It was then he smelt something in the air...like rotten meat. He followed the smell to the window...it reminded him of...no it couldn't be. But then the smell faded away. He shrugged trying to not let his mind drift.
"Why do you care Alice? I'd really like to know." GG asked as she chopped vegetables for dinner.
Alice really thought about it...what did she feel towards Damien. Her heart starting beating a little faster at the thought of him. Why though? "He's my friend...where I come from, we care about our friends."
"Is that so?" Damiens voice surprised her, making her jump. She glared at him, but couldn't help but smile as he smiled down at her. "Sorry what were you guys talking about?"
"Alice was telling me about what things were like in Bunnyburrow." GG responded giving Alice a wink and smile.
Damien didn't seem to notice as he asked, "Like what? I'm sure Bunnyburrow is very boring isn't it, Fluff?" He patted her head, making her pretend giving him a dirty look. What was it about Damien that made her so happy?
All Damien could think was, 'She has some really pretty blue eyes.' This bunny...what was she to him?
GG watched them smile and laugh, and tease each other. She saw something there between the two that they didn't realize. It had been awhile since she had seen Damien smile and be so happy. She hoped this bunny could keep him this way. Hopefully when the time came they could help each other. But seeing him smile...she hoped whatever was happening between them would last.
