Okay, so I know spite is a weird reason for getting inspiration for something but it ended up happening. I read a horrible Rei and Haru/Rei bashing story and it made me so mad that I decided to spread more love for my OTP. This is set during the 'Perfect World' ending theme where the Appmon characters are planning a surprise party for Haru. So, Hajime hasn't been found yet. Okay, so wow! Apparently, I haven't written too much of Rei being sweet in awhile or I've gotten too used to Keith cause this was a challenge. A good one though! This was written for my Appmon server drabbles challenge so I hope everyone enjoys.
Rei had never really planned a birthday party before or rather helped plan it so it was a new feeling to him. Mama always made sure Hajime and I had a birthday party, even if it was small but that was so long ago. Still, Haru deserved this. As he stood in the kitchen of The Kashinoki bookstore, squeezing out the pink cookie batter onto the tray.
"Rei," Hackmon's calm voice said quietly. "You're thinking about it too much. What do you want?"
Rei shrugged a bit. He didn't really know how to explain it. Words are always complicated but Hackmon's words did allow for the gears in his brain to begin turning. His movements became more natural, gaze sharpening as the shape of the cookies was forming the same size circles. He paused once the cookie batter had been all spread out, before pondering if he should add anything else. Shaking his head, he left it to cool for some time, thoughts drifting to when the surprise would finally be ready.
Haru had stood by his side this whole time after all and even though he didn't have Hajime back yet, it was only a matter of time before he did. He was getting closer every day, after all to finding out where Leviathan was holding his baby brother prisoner and soon, they would be together again. Thanks to Haru – I had the chance to do that – to save my little brother. He could feel it after all – the aches from the constant electric shocks that made his heart constrict as he struggled against the ropes. He had still been trying to catch his breath – he had been ready to accept that he would die – die without the chance to tell his little brother he loved him. He would die without the chance to see him again – Raidramon was down, after all and he could barely move. But Haru…Haru was the reason he was still here. The reason he still had that chance – he knew given a monkey would have better social skills than him – that he would never be able to tell Haru all this but…this was enough right? Even if he could never say it bluntly like Yuujin, Astra or Eri, even if he couldn't sound as sweet as Ai…he wanted Haru to know how he felt.
His hands wrapped around the end of the baking tray, the surface feeling cool to touch. The batter had been left long enough and the oven was ready. Opening the oven door, he placed the tray inside. Haru, I hope this birthday will be one you'll always remember.
