Chapter 5
By week 22, Beck and Jade finally started buying things for the baby. That week, they purchased a set with a matching crib, changing table, and rocking chair, as well as some clothes. The first outfit Jade picked out for the baby was a black and grey tie dye onesie. It looked a lot like a t-shirt Jade owned.
With the clothes, the couple tried to pick out the most neutral colors they could find, not only because they were Jade's favorite, but also because they'd decided the didn't want to find out the sex of the baby.
The whole gender reveal thing had actually been a huge fight between Beck and Jade around week 20.
*flashback*
"I just don't understand why you don't want to find out the gender." Jade said, clearly annoyed. Their 20 week ultrasound was supposed to be the following day and they'd finally be able to find out the gender, but Beck said he didn't want to.
"I just don't, Jade. I like surprises. And if you really care so bad, then you can find out the gender. Just keep it a secret from me." Beck was trying to compromise.
"I'm not gonna do that, Beck. How do you expect us to buy clothes if we don't know the gender?"
"It's not that hard, Jade. You hate pink anyway. Even if we have a girl, you know you'll put her in red or blue any day over pink. We'll just buy gender neutral clothes."
"Beck, I just don't understand."
"I just want to wait. The gender of a baby is one of the few surprises in life where you actually have a choice to keep it a surprise. I want to keep it a surprise."
The couple continued to argue for about a half hour, before Beck finally gave up. It was 10pm at that point, and Beck was tired of fighting. He simply grabbed his pillow and mumbled something about sleeping on the couch.
The next morning, things seemed to be better between them.
"I guess, if it really means that much to you, I can wait to find out the gender. I'm not happy about it, but I love you. I can agree with this one thing." Jade said, as she walked out to the living room that morning.
"Thank you. And I love you too."
They ended up going to their ultrasound appointment, and just like they'd agreed on, they didn't find out the gender.
*end flashback*
It was also week 22 that they'd picked out two potential names.
"Ok, what do you think about the name Kyson?" Beck asked, as he and Jade laid in bed together on a lazy Saturday.
"Mm, it's cute, I guess, but it won't be our son's name." Jade replied.
"Ok, what about Kendal?"
"Beck, when's the last time you heard Kendal for a boy's name? We're not calling our son Kendal."
"You're right. What about Kai?"
"Maybe for a middle name."
"Ok, that's progress. Do you have any K names you like?"
"Why K names? What significance does the letter K have?"
"I don't know, I just like it. There's a K in everyone of my family's names. My dad's name is Kaden with a K. My mom's name is Mishka. My sister's name is Anika. My brother's name is Kaleb. And of course Beck. We all have Ks."
"Ok, I guess that's pretty cool, but what if I want to keep the J theme going? I mean, that's a pretty big thing in my family. Jana, Jade, Jessa, Jaxon, and now the new baby will either be named Jasper or Jayla."
"Well, we can do both. I just said I wanted a K in the name, not necessarily a K name."
"Ok, what about the name Jakob?"
"I actually love that name. What about the middle name?"
"I really like the name Kai. Jakob Kai West Oliver."
"Jakob Kai. So now we just need a girl's name."
"I like the name Jamie."
"What about the K?"
"We could make her name hyphenated. Jamie-Kai."
"Ok. Jamie-Kai West Oliver."
"I think we just named our baby."
"I think we did."
Beck leaned in to kiss Jade, and placed his hand on Jade's bump. As he kissed Jade, he could feel the baby kicking his hand. He couldn't help but smile.
"I'm so happy, Jade. I never thought I could be this happy, but I am."
"I'm happy too."
"I know this is probably gonna be the craziest thing I ever do, but I have to do it." Beck said, as he got up from the bed and walked over to their dresser.
He pulled something out of his sock drawer and hid it behind his back.
"What're you doing, Beck?"
"I love you so much. Hell, I've loved you since our first date in 9th grade. I'm so terrified of having a baby and becoming a dad, but I'm so happy it's with you. I'm so happy we're gonna be parents." Beck moved his hand to the front before continuing. "You're the love of my life, Jade. I know we're young, and we definitely don't have to do this anytime soon, but I can't wait any longer. Jade Marie Carrington West, will you marry me?" Beck asked, as he opened the velvet box in his hand, revealing a beautiful silver ring.
Jade was speechless. Was he really proposing? She didn't know what to say or do. She just started crying.
"No, please don't cry. I can put the ring away. I get that it's too soon. It's ok." Beck said, trying to make her stop crying.
"No." Jade started, through tears. "I want *sob* to marry *sob* you. Yes."
"Really?"
Jade nodded her head and held out her hand. Beck slipped the ring on her left ring finger and kissed her hand. She then pulled her hand back to admire the ring. It was a beautiful ring with two small diamonds on the top. It had smaller diamond embedded in the band. It was a silver band. On the back of the ring, there was an inscription. It read "08-15-08." It was the date of their first date.
"It's beautiful, Beck."
"I was nervous that you wouldn't like it."
"I love it. I love you."
Jade leaned in for a kiss and that kiss went a lot further. They ended up falling asleep, wrapped up in each other's warm, safe arms.
