The Distance Between You and Me
Chapter 3
Looking out the window, Elena sighed twiddling her fingers as her parents talked with the doctor outside. What were they talking about?
"Hey sweetie." Her mother said coming into the room. Her smile radiant.
"What's going on?"
"The doctors are saying that you're doing so good that you can go home tomorrow."
"Wait. Really?" Elena breathed, a smile crossing over her face as excitement consumed her.
"Yes. We're taking you home tomorrow."
"I'm so glad that I can finally get out of this place and hopefully stay out of here if I'm lucky."
"I'll be right there hoping with you. "
"How long will it be before I get to go back to school?" she asked feeling her smile.
"That's something will have to discuss with your doctors. It's definitely a day to day process."
"I just hope one day that I can live a normal and happy life."
"One day sweetheart you will. Now do you want some ice cream?"
"Rocky road?"
"It's as if you read my mind."
"Coming right up."
Smiling Elena's mother left the room as she collapsed back onto her bed, happier than she ever had been for years.
"Home, Sweet home." Her dad smiled as Elena crossed the threshold feeling better than she had in years. She even had a little pep in her step now. Life was going great right now despite what happened to get her to this point. She wondered how Damon was doing now.
"So, what should we do first?"
"That is entirely up to you. What do you want to do on the first day of the rest of your life?"
"I want to do something besides stay home. I feel like I've been a home body for way too long."
"Well your father and I will make arrangements at some point, but until you're finally recovered, we can't risk exposure to anything that can get you sick."
"So, I'm back to being a prisoner once again." She whined plopping on the couch.
"It's only temporary Elena until you know you're in the clear."
"Whatever." She replied knowing she was being ungrateful, but she was ready to start living. She didn't want to be known as the sick girl any longer.
"We're going to call for pizza and then we'll celebrate your return home." Her mother said with a smile leaving her to wonder when she would start living her life again.
