Chapter One: Memories
"Elliot put his papers in…" Cragen murmured. Olivia could only look at the man in front of her. She was confused, hurt, and she felt dejected. But most of all, she was heart broken.
But before she could even think about saying anything,
Cragen countered, "There was nothing I could do…" The look on Olivia's face, was enough to make him stop talking. She stood there for a few seconds longer, trying to find her voice, trying to take in what her captain had just said.
Nodding her head, she spoke, it was quiet, and full of despair, but it was there. "He's earned it…" It was a simple way of acceptance, it was keeping her grounded.
The vagueness of it all. She couldn't bring herself to say anything else, in fear she'd burst into tears. "And then some." She honestly hadn't expected Cragen to say anything back, but when he had, she felt her heart drop into her stomach. The magnitude of his words, hitting her. Elliot really wasn't coming back.
She was really having this conversation, and she wasn't sleeping. "You wanna talk?" He asked her. She knew he was trying to be supportive, that he cared. That as Elliot's captain of over 15 years, he'd be hurting too. But, she couldn't talk, not right now. "No."
"You wanna take a day?"
He tried, watching her hold back the tears threatening to spill, any second now. "I'm fine." She choked, desperate to leave his office. He noticed it, of course. And just wanted to make her feel better, and try as he might, nothing would work at this moment.
"Liv, I'm sorry." He retorted. She only let out a soft laugh, briefly. A sad smile, on her face. And as reality hit her, hard, she walked out of his office.
(Present Day….)
Olivia was getting dressed, clipping her badge on her belt, and holstering her gun, when she heard footsteps behind her. She turned around, as Noah walked into her room.
"Hey sweet boy, you ready to go?." She asked, mindlessly clipping her hair up.
"Yeah Momma. Can I ride my scooter today?" He asked, excitement spread amongst his features. Originally Olivia was going to drive today, so she could go grocery shopping after work. But she couldn't say no, to that smile.
"Of course you can, sweetheart." She said, laughing at his happiness. Noah jumped around excitedly, and took off to grab his scooter from the closet. Olivia shook her head. The energy, she wished she still had.
And before she knew it, they were off. Talking about school, and snacks she was going to buy from the store later. That was until Noah got tired of riding it, and wanted to walk. But he also didn't want to push it. Once they arrived, Olivia had realized they hadn't grabbed anything to lock it up with. Which slightly irritated her. After she watched Noah enter the building, she herself took off towards the precinct. Walking a scooter down Wall Street.
She exited the elevator just as Kat was about to get on.
"Morning Captain! Nice scooter." She exclaimed.
Olivia gave a taut nod, and a soft smile. "Good morning Kat, where are you rushing off too, at 8 am?" She asked, exiting the elevator.
"I'm going to go grab coffee for everyone. I'm assuming you want one too?" She asked, with her giddy grin.
"You know what, I'd love one. Thanks! And hey you wanna ride?" She asked, holding the scooter out jokingly. Kat laughed, and shook her head. "No thanks Cap, i'll take a raincheck on that one. Plus side of adulthood, I can drive!" She said, dangling the keys.
Olivia laughed a little too hard, making her way past the young detective and towards her office. Fin shouted a hello, and Amanda waved.
"Nice ride, Captain." Amanda joked, smiling mischievously at her commanding officer, and friend.
Olivia rolled her eyes at the blonde. "Sorry I'm so late, Noah wanted to ride his scooter to school.. And it took forever. Part of it was him riding it, him getting bored of riding it, and me pushing it. And then he didn't bring anything to lock it up with…And hey, don't make fun, this is your new cruiser. You've gotta drive to all your cases on this aluminum bad boy." She joked.
Amanda laughed, "You think it can seat two?" She asked, there was an eerily serious tone underlying in her question. It almost startled Olivia. She knew it was a joke. But she could also see it happening. Amanda riding a scooter to work. She laughed to herself and shook her head.
Fin chimed in finally, "Hey Liv, in Narcotics I used one of those, don't threaten me, with a good time." He teased.
This finally broke Olivia, she was cracking up. One good thing about work? She had great friends and Detectives. "Oh god… Well, paperwork calls… So, let's get to it everyone! If you need me, you know where I am!" She exclaimed. Once she made it inside, she closed the door. Setting the scooter against the wall. And sitting down at her desk.
She sighed heavily, rubbing her temples. At least it was quiet for now.
That however didn't last long, before she was quite prepared for it, the squadroom was bustling with people. Olivia sighed, before she stood and made her way to the door. Worktime.
"Hey captain, we've got a woman here, look for you." Kat said, pointing out to the hallway.
Olivia glanced past her, looking out the window. A woman, hugging herself stood outside, blonde hair, blue eyes, and what seemed to be that same old black briefcase hung from her hand. Olivia's breath caught in her throat when she made the connection. She practically waved off Katriona as she wandered towards the blonde woman.
"Olivia…" She was greeted with.
Olivia breathed out one word "Alexandra…"
The blonde smiled warmly. They both took each other in a moment, looking at every new and old aspect.
It was mere seconds before they collided, in a hug. Everyone's attention from inside the squadroom, was averted towards the captain who was hugging a tall blonde woman.
Fin's eyes widened as he realized exactly who the blonde was. "Alex." he murmured.
Amanda was confused, she knew of Alexandra Cabot, she'd even met her once during a case a few years ago, but she didn't know her well enough to identify her without hearing her name. She gave Fin a look.
He shrugged, and aimed his attention back to his friends. His oldest friends. Kat just raised a brow, she knew the captain was nice, and understanding… But never this touchy, or sentimental. Then again she didn't know any of them that well yet.
It seemed like they'd been hugging forever. Before Olivia pulled away, "What are you doing here?" She asked, sadness laced her tone. The last she'd heard Alex went back to Illegally helping battered women.
"I caught a case here… And, well you're going to want to be involved." She explained, with a knowing tone.
"You know I'll help you, Alex… What's the case?" She asked, ready to say yes to nearly anything the blonde would throw at her.
"I'm not sure you're going to be so pleased and willing to help when I tell you what- or rather who the case is about…" Alex confessed.
Olivia looked at her Alex, almost afraid to know, but no matter she urged her to continue, "Who is the case about?" She asked.
"Kathy Stabler…" Alex said, in a normal tone. But there was an underlying sound, fear? Probably.
Olivia took a deep breath. "I haven't heard from Elliot in years… Let alone his wife." She mumbled. She deflated. She hadn't talked about him in almost 6 years, let alone heard from him, in 10.
"Ex." Alex softly corrected. This was news to Olivia. The blonde watched as her friend, and the only woman she'd ever loved deeply, processed the news that'd forever change her life.
"Wow… They actually divorced?" She asked, still avoiding the actual topic. This was killing her. Her shoulders slumped, and her posture was slouched. Very unlike Olivia Benson.
"Liv…. that's not the point." Alex pushed softly. She knew Olivia was deflecting.
"Then what is Alex?" She asked, finally making eye contact with her. Her brown eyes were lost. She looked genuinely afraid of what the attorney was about to say.
"Kathy is suing the NYPD, and the city. One for unlawful imprisonment of her daughter Kathleen. And two, because apparently the arresting officers were too rough. She's suing for police brutality and assault." She Explained. Alex had a look of determination written on her features.
It was this look, that made Olivia raise an eyebrow at the blonde. "Kathleen was arrested!? When?" Olivia then asked. She was making a mental note to look up the case files, when she got back to her office. Why wait? "Let's take this to my office." Olivia then said, turning on her heels towards her office.
Fin was watching as the two made their way towards the room that was Olivia's office.
Alex trailed behind, her usual Black High heeled shoes, clicking against the floorboard. Fin knew something was up, something more than just a quick friendly reunion.
Alex looked at the door as she approached it. Her fingers slowly reached up to the glass, to graze the unfamiliar lettering, that read: Captain Olivia Benson. She felt something inside of her swell momentarily.
Olivia was made captain. She was proud of her. So proud.
Finally making it into the office, she sat her briefcase down on the couch in the room, and took her place in the arm of said couch. "Before we continue… Liv, congratulations for making captain." She said, a genuine smile spread across her lips. The soft red lipstick, making her look a bit more captivating.
"Thank you, Alex." She returned, With a smile of her own. Honestly? Olivia was proud of herself too, in the most unapologetic way. Because she'd worked so hard to get there. Even if at some point she said she didn't want the promotion. "Now let's get back to business. Shall we? We can always talk personally over a drink." She added the last little bit with a smirk.
Alex shook her head with a soft laugh.
"You're right, back to business Detective— Captain." She corrected it before going on.
"Anyways, Kathleen stabler was arrested 3 months ago, in Queens. She was detained for breaking and entering— again. This time however, her dad couldn't pull any strings… and the charges stuck. Only issue is? She broke in because apparently the guy had sexually assaulted her a few days before. He took some necklace that belonged to her. While she was on a Binger. And she'd only just recalled the memories. So she broke in, to get her necklace back. According to the arresting statement." Cabot finished.
Olivia was typing furiously on her keyboard, before she stopped completely. And she looked over all the charges: Assault on an officer; Battery & assault; breaking and entering; possession of an uncontrolled substance; theft. Olivia's mouth hung open.
"Well seems as though I don't need to go over all the charges…" Alex said nervously.
"What was your plan?" Olivia asked, still staring at the screen in front of her.
"I was actually on my way to Queens. But this place… it called to me. I knew I needed you." She said, and she was right. In more than one way. Alexandra Cabot needed Olivia Benson. Simple.
"Well I'm going with you." She said, leaving little room for an argument. Standing up and facing towards the blonde.
"Yeah… that's the other reason I came… Kathy thinks maybe you can help with Kathleen's case…" she added. This made Olivia sigh.
"I said I'd go… But I could make a few calls here instead… I don't think I can…" Olivia stopped talking. And the thought of seeing her ex partner's kids and ex wife flashed through her mind. And what disaster it could be. Or worse, how healing it could be. Olivia didn't forgive easily. And she was definitely angry at Him still. She had moved on, yes. But she'd never forgotten that pain. And it scared her.
"Liv— You're the only person who knows them that well… and I know… That seeing the Stabler's is going to be hard. But you've wanted this closure for so long. It's time for you to get it. And… you get to work at the same time. So if it goes awry, you can just stay on official business." She said, reassuring the Captain that it'd be okay.
Olivia took a deep breath. And looked down at her phone. Noah's face as her wallpaper looked back at her. And she felt more courageous. "Let's do it…" Olivia said, walking out the door. And almost running to the elevator. It was now or never. And she needed to get on the road, if she didn't want to back out.
Alex noticed Fin on her way out, and waved at him. They'd catch up later, for now… they had something to
Do. Reconciliation, and getting the charges against Kathleen dropped.
