Chapter 5: The Truth/Back to work
A/N: Shoutout to annabellex for checking in on me and making sure I was still writing the story! Read the A/N at the bottom after the chapter. Enjoy!
Two long weeks passed since Kendall's unannounced and shocking return. Jeff and Logan had been hanging out more and became closer. Logan also hadn't spoken to James in a while, though he had talked to Carlos. The Latino spy told him that James had been on the couch for a few days; However, with some "Diamond Persuasion", he had moved back to the bed.
Logan told Carlos he didn't know if he could ever forgive James for what he did. Carlos expressed to him that James didn't mean to cause him harm and that it would be better if he and Kendall could explain themselves. Logan told Carlos that he'd think about it. That following Monday, he found himself dialing Kendall's number. After five rings, Kendall's voice came through the receiver.
"Hello?"
"Hey. Come over. We need to talk." Logan hung up the phone. He sat on the sofa and waited, not sure of what to do. Ten minutes later, the doorbell rang. Logan opened the door and Kendall was standing there, dressed in a black jacket, v-neck, jeans, and vans.
"You've got 5 minutes to explain yourself." Kendall nodded, entering the house and sitting down in the loveseat. Logan sat on the sofa. Kendall had been nervous the whole way over and he was hoping that wasn't showing.
"Where do I start.."
"The beginning would nice or just the part where you decided you would make my life a living hell after we met."
"Look, this isn't an easy subject for either of us to talk about and I don't wanna fight. I've spent my entire life fighting and I'm damn well not about to fight with you. So, just shut up and let me talk." Kendall's assertiveness made Logan jump. He always did get a bit turned on when Kendall put him in his place. Logan couldn't give in to the blonde no matter how much he wanted to.
"I began working for Mileaux as a double agent after he faked his death. Since we worked together when I was in Gustavo Rocque's division, I was the only one who knew his death was fabricated. He offered me money at first, but I didn't want in. However, I then thought about how my mother and sister were killed. I thought that would be a ticket in to see who was behind their murders. I accepted his offer in exchange for access to top secret files. That's when I met you." Kendall looked up to find Logan staring at him blankly, searching his eyes for any sign of a lie but found none.
"I knew you'd be the only one who could bring down the entire operation. So, I initially took interest in you just to throw you off and make you look in other places for the answers that were right in front of you. But, what I didn't plan on doing was falling in love with you." That definitely caught Logan's attention. He saw the uncertainty in the brunette's eyes.
"I told myself to stop falling for you but I couldn't. I was in too deep. The more time we spent together made me want to love you more and not be the guy you thought was the "real Kendall". So, I did what I thought was right and pushed you away as much as possible. I never intended for you to find out about my dealings but once you had, I had to face the music. That night we had our big blow up about you being pregnant made it real for me. I wasn't mad at you, I was mad at myself for getting you into my mess and so I took it all out on you. I told myself that night that I was going to get out of the game for you. I had to get out for our child." Taking a moment to breathe, Kendall continued.
"I knew in order to get out, I had to die, so I put on a Kevlar vest. When Mileaux shot at you, I jumped in front of the bullet so the vest could take the blow. When James came to rescue you, he'd already told me a few hours in advance that the rescue team planned to blow up the building and I told him there was a self-destruct button on the machine. So, we planned it out, I would press the destruct button and everyone will think I'm dead. I stayed hidden for several months so if anyone was connected with Mileaux, they couldn't follow my tracks. After the detonator had been activated, I just barely had enough time to escape. I managed to slip out of the back window when the building exploded. I called James and stayed at his safe house for a while and then that's how I ended up here." Kendall finished. He looked at Logan wondering why he had an angry look on his face. "Anything, anything at all?"
"How dare you," Logan said in a wave of quiet, stirring anger.
"What?" Kendall was genuinely confused. He thought he'd struck at Logan's soft spot.
"How dare you come in here and lie to me?!"
"What the fu-?! When was I lying? I've told you nothing but the truth!"
"Oh, please like you didn't make that up as some twisted attempt to woo me and have me fall back into your arms."
"Logan, where is this coming from? This is fucking ridiculous. I come over here because YOU invited me! I bare my heart out to you and I get accused of lying. I'm not taking this shit anymore! I'm sick of you judging me for my mistakes. Here I am trying to resolve things with you and take responsibility for my actions and most of all my son." Kendall huffed.
"With all the problems you've caused past, what am I supposed to believe?" Logan asked.
"How about you try not thinking with your emotions and believe me?!" Kendall shouted.
"I can't trust you. Not after all of this." Logan argued.
"You know what? Forget it! I can't believe I wasted my time. Have a nice life, Logan. Matter of fact, do me a favor and delete me from your phone. Just forget I ever existed!" Kendall yelled storming out of the door.
"Gladly!" Logan yelled as the door slammed shut. He sat back down, shaking. He didn't know what to believe, which made him torn between his head and his heart. Logan didn't have any more tears left to cry, so he pulled his legs up to his chest and sighed deeply.
Truth be told, he was tired of crying all the time. All of this emotion made him think he was going soft. He hugged himself and laid back against the sofa, turning on the TV to take his mind off of life.
Josephine "Jo" Taylor, a feisty, determined, young blonde woman, who had been working for the CIA for about four months; Going through the positions of an intern, assistant, all the way to field agent. She was told that she was so good, that she would be filling in for Logan Mitchell. The agent whom she knew almost everything about. She did her research and found out who Logan was and instantly knew she wanted to be like him. Perhaps, even better than him.
Jo graduated at the top of her class in agent school and excelled in the martial arts forms they were taught. She considered herself a mini-Logan along with a few other agents who were convinced as well. She'd heard of Logan's infamous relationship with "Bad-boy" Agent Kendall Knight and how he turned out to be a double agent. It was the office gossip for a few months but Jo never paid it any mind. Jo was on a mission. A mission to become the greatest spy that ever lived. All while maintaining a personal life.
She was typing information into the computer when she heard yelling from down the hallway. It seemed to be the norm around HQ but it caught Jo's attention enough to make her go investigate. She followed the noise until she came to halt at the corridor where she saw Agents Garcia and Diamond arguing over what looked to be marital issues. She didn't want to be rude by interrupting but she also didn't want to eavesdrop. She quietly turned around to walk away when she bumped into someone. The blonde woman looked up to find piercing green eyes staring down at her. Jo was so entranced with the man's eyes that it didn't even register to her that he was speaking to her.
"Hello? Anyone in there?" The man asked.
"Huh? Oh! I'm so sorry, I wasn't watching where I was going."
"Well, that's apparent. Don't sweat it." He winked.
"Pretty eyes...you have." Jo can't believe she managed to gather the courage to tell this stranger she likes his eyes.
"Thanks, Yoda. You new here?" Kendall knew he was making the woman bashful and flustered.
"Mhm." Those were the only words Jo could muster up.
"What's your name?"
"J-Jo." Jo said trying to not appear like a babbling idiot like she did when she complimented him.
"Cute. See ya around, sweetheart. " He said continuing on his way down the hall before he bumped into Jo.
"Hey! You never told me your name." Jo called out.
"Kendall." Jo stood there, breathless. She couldn't believe she'd just met THE Kendall Knight. She felt weak in the knees from his smooth-talking and utter sex appeal that made her lady bits tingle with excitement. Jo walked back to her desk and got back to work until she was needed to assist someone.
Logan pulled on his light gray cardigan and brushed himself over. He looked at himself in the mirror smiling. He was ecstatic that he could finally fit back into the jeans that wouldn't even button together several months ago.
He had a date with Jeff tonight and wanted to look nice. He'd gotten over his spat with Kendall deciding he was done with being the victim. He was going to go back to being the "old Logan". The Logan that was thick-skinned, tough, and independent; He'd be damned if anyone stood in the way of that.
In a way, he felt like he was past Kendall, but deep down he'd never be over the blonde. He'd never admit to it but Kendall was his true love. It was a dark, destructive love but it was true, even if Kendall lied. He brushed himself over once more when the doorbell rang. Logan asked his dad to come over and watch Andy since he was going out and bringing your baby on the first date isn't exactly appealing.
Logan ran downstairs, unlocked and opened the door to see his father on the other side. "Hi, dad! Come in."
"How ya doing, Logie?"
"I'm alright. How are you?" Logan walked into the kitchen to clean off the counters before he has to leave.
"Never better! Just been workin' and spending time with your stepmother." Andrew closed the door behind him and follow his son into the kitchen.
"Oh, yeah? How is Brooke?"
"Oh, she's fine, just running things as usual. You know her. Working on expanding her cosmetics to third world countries."
"That's great! Good for her! Achieving life goals and whatnot." Logan said wiping the area around the sink.
"Yeah! Speaking of Brooke, she tells me you and James haven't been speaking for a while, what's up with that?" Andrew leaned against the counter and crossed his arms. Logan really didn't want to talk about this right now. Now wasn't a good time because he didn't want to be stressed out before his date.
"Dad, I really don't wanna talk about this right now." Logan said still facing away from his dad. "We had a disagreement and because I got a little pissed and we haven't spoken since. I invited you over to watch my son, not interrogate me about a fight I had with my brother."
"First of all, you will not talk to me that way ever again. I don't care how old you are! Second, I don't mean to pry I was just wondering. Sorry if I'm just trying to look out for my family." Logan stopped wiping the counter and turned to face his father, sighing.
"I'm sorry, dad." Logan leaned against the counter, running his fingers through his spiked hair. " I just really don't wanna talk about it. Not before my date. I'm just getting back out there with a guy I really like and I don't want to ruin it before it even starts." The doorbell rang followed by knocking on the door.
"Speak of the devil. Would you mind checking on Andy while I get the door?" Andrew nodded, and both Mitchell men went their separate ways. Logan brushed himself over and opened the door.
"Hey, you!" Jeff was wearing a black leather jacket, dark blue jeans, and a gray v-neck t-shirt.
"Hey, come in!" Logan smiled, stepping away to let the taller brunette man inside. "This is for you." Jeff presented a single red rose to Logan from behind his back.
"Jeff, it's beautiful. Thank you." Logan leaned up and hugged him around the neck."Stay right here. Let me go put this in some water."
"I won't move a muscle," Jeff said smiling. Logan smiled and walked into the kitchen. Jeff pulled out his phone to text when he heard footsteps coming from the stairs. He looked up and saw Mr. Mitchell coming down with Andy in his arms.
"Hey there, little man," Jeff said smiling at the baby attempting to touch the baby's back but stopped when Andrew stepped back from his reach.
"And who might you be?"Andrew said looking him up and down, disapprovingly.
"I'm sorry, sir. I'm Jeff Hughes. I'll be taking Logan out tonight." He stuck his hand out for Andrew to shake but the older Mitchell simply looked at it and back at Jeff who meekly retracted his hand.
"What are your intentions with my son?"
"I plan to take him out to dinner and show him a wonderful night on the town."
"What restaurant?" Andrew asked his hard glare never faltering as he took a step forward into Jeff's personal space.
"Wherever Logan wishes to go."
"Hmm...I don't know what you're up to, but just know if you hurt my son. You won't live to tell the tale." Andrew glared up at Jeff. Jeff started to reply, however, Logan entering the room kept him from doing so.
"Dad! I hope you're being nice to Jeff."
"I've been cordial," Andrew said with a quick tongue, still staring Jeff down. For whatever reason, he didn't like the vibe he got from Jeff but he couldn't exactly put his finger on it.
"Good, well, we're leaving now. Be good. There are two bottles in the microwave and baby food in the pantry. I've got some leftover pasta in the fridge if you get hungry and drinks too. I think that's it." Logan surmised.
"Logan, I've raised a baby before. I've got this."
"Okay dad, thank you so much! Love you!" Logan shouted as he closed the front door behind him. Andrew watched through the window as Logan and Jeff drove off in Jeff's sports car.
"I don't like that guy, Andy. Not one bit." Andrew sat down on the couch and turned on the TV.
"Oh my god! That's hilarious." Logan laughed hysterically as he ate his Caesar salad. "You know Jeff, you're a riot."
"Thank you, thank you. I'll be here all week."Jeff chuckled taking a bite of his burger. Logan felt the cool breeze blow past his face. Jeff had brought him to a little outdoor café. It was very hip and urban, much to Logan's liking. "Logan, can I ask you something?"
"Yeah. Sure."
"What do you look for in a guy?"Jeff asked, maintaining eye contact with Logan. Logan just about choked on his water when the question was asked but he remained composed.
"I, uh, I don't know, really. I look for someone who'll love me inside and out. Someone who doesn't need my attention all the time or is needy or clingy. I also look for..." Logan trailed off as he looked up and watch a very familiar man walk up to the outdoor counter. His eyes widened as much as humanly possible. He watched as the man ordered his food then handed over his credit card to the cashier. Logan could no longer sit in his seat as he boiled with anger.
"Logan, you ok there?"
"Yeah! Never better! Can you excuse me for a second, I need to go to the men's room?" He asked speedily rising from his seat, striding to the counter.
As he approached the counter, he could hear the two men finalizing the transaction.
"Your order will be ready in a few minutes sir."
"Thank you. Here's a tip."
"What the hell are you doing here?" Logan asked, slamming his hand on the counter.
"Why, Logan! What a pleasure it is to run into you on such a glorious evening," Kendall said sarcastically while rolling his eyes. Not once did Kendall look up at Logan but maintained his eyes on his iPhone.
"Are you following me?" Logan asked getting in the blonde's face.
"Me? Following you? That's highly preposterous and if you ask me, a little conceited, don't you think?" Kendall kept up his little game of taunting Logan. He honestly wasn't expecting to see Logan out and about, considering all he does is take care of their son.
"Look, I will not be stalked by you or anyone who may be-"
"No one is stalking you! I'm just here to get food for me and my date. That's it. Not everything revolves around you, Logan. The sooner you figure that out, the better off we'll be." Logan himself stood there in shock. Not only had Kendall put him in his place, but he'd seemingly moved on.
"I'm, uh, sorry for assuming you were following me." Logan hated being wrong, especially in moments like these.
"Whatever," Kendall said coldly.
"So, who is he?"
"Who are you talking about?"
"Your date."
"Her name is Jo."
"Oh...is she pretty?" Logan asked looking down, feeling ashamed.
"What does it matter to you?" Kendall asked venomously. Logan sighed angrily and just crossed his arms. "She's gorgeous if you must know." Kendall put his phone in his pocket and looked Logan directly in the eyes.
"Why'd you come over here, Logan? I thought you never wanted me to speak to you again. You know what? I think you want me to speak to you whenever we run into each other. You want me to think about you all the time and dream about you. Think about all that I'm "missing out" on. Well, babe, you got another thing coming if you think that's what I'm doing. If you'll excuse me I have a date that's waiting on me and it looks like Rain Man over there is getting nervous without you."
Kendall took the bag of food from the cashier and began walking away, leaving Logan there in a daze of sorts. Logan watched as Kendall walked up to a petite blonde woman and wrapped his around her waist. His heart raced with jealousy as he saw the blonde girl lean up and kiss Kendall. He turned away and walked back to his table where Jeff was tapping the table and texting.
"Hey, you're back! I thought you might've left after...what's wrong?" Jeff asked with concern.
"Nothing. I'm just not feeling good." Logan stared off, watching Kendall get on a motorcycle with his date getting on behind him. She wrapped her arms around his waist for safety as they revved the engine and sped off into the night.
"Hey, if there's something bothering you that you would like to talk about, you can tell me." Jeff grabbed Logan's hand and pulled it to the center of the table and squeezed and rubbed it soothingly. Logan smiled lightly at his sweet gesture.
"Thank you, Jeff, but really, I'm fine. I guess the chicken in my salad didn't agree with me. I think it'd be best if I went home."
"Ok, we can do that." Jeff smiled kindly.
The drive back was filled with comfortable silence from the two men and the music playing on the radio. Logan wasn't exactly ecstatic about hearing all the top 40 hits which were mainly cheesy, pop love songs that annoyed the shit out of him but he dealt with it for Jeff's sake.
Jeff pulled in his driveway, deciding he would walk Logan to his door since they lived right next to each other. The two men walked up the porch steps, stopping at the front door.
" I had a good time tonight," Logan said smiling.
"Me too." Jeff smiled back but then leaned in and kissed Logan. He moved his lips against Logan's but noticed Logan didn't kiss back, so he pulled away.
"I'm sorry Jeff. I'm just not in the mood. My mind's not in the place tonight. Maybe next time?"
"Yeah, next time. Goodnight Logan." Jeff embraced the smaller man who happily obliged with an embrace in return. Logan pulled away and unlocked the door to his house and walked in as Jeff walked down the porch stairs and back to his home.
"Hello, Agents. As most of you may know, your former director, Director Buchanan, has been promoted to director of NSA. I am Martin Reid, your new director." All of the agents present around the oval conference table gave a round of applause.
"First, I'd like to welcome our top agent here in Central intelligence back from paternity leave, Agent Logan Mitchell." All the agents clapped for him as Logan smiled with confidence.
"We are very glad to have you back. I trust you will work hard, Agent Mitchell." Logan grinned with pride. James looked on stoically while Carlos beamed happily, clinging on his husband's arm.
"Pleasure to meet you, sir. I'm back and better than before, Director Reid."
"Excellent! We also have another agent, who isn't currently present but I'm sure will turn up sometime soon. He, too, will be working with Agent Mitchell on this new mission." Logan raised his eyebrow wondering who his new partner would be. The door opened and Logan's eyes enlarged with shock and disapproval at who walked in.
"Now, the mission— Ah! Agent Knight! How nice it is of you to finally join us. Agent Mitchell, meet Agent Kendall Knight, your partner on this mission."
