Chapter 10: Sunshine
I'M BAAAAAAACK! Let's catch up 2 1/2 years later at the end with an Author's Note! For now, LET'S GET INTO SOME KOGAN SPYNESS! :P
"Now, Agents, what new information have you acquired on Robert Hunt?" Director Reid asked Logan and Kendall.
"Robert was last seen at a restaurant near the outskirts of L.A.," Logan said. "He was meeting with Delmar Rosando, one of many drug lords in Mexico. Surveillance was able to pick up the visual feed but the audio was must've been erased. In the video, they were discussing matters that they obviously didn't want to be heard. Soon after the discussion begins, apparently, things began to heat up between the two, leading Hunt to shoot Rosando. I've learned from my contact in Europe that Hunt is planning to team up with major drug lords for mass distribution of a drug of some sort. The drug is said to give the body a burning sensation from the inside. It is highly addictive but almost undetectable. However, when creating the drug something went wrong and the test subjects went mentally insane and literally were burned from the inside out. It was a slow, painful death, unfortunately." Logan sighed as each picture flashed across the screen. The final image was that of the test subject who had suffered the tragic fate of being burned from the inside out.
"Thank you, Agent." Director Reid said. Kendall remained quiet throughout the rest of the debriefing. The only time he spoke was when the director informed them that their first mission started the next day. The two would be going to a party where Robert Hunt was hosting at a mansion in Los Angeles. He knew the stakes were high and he couldn't risk putting his or Logan's life on the line despite his feelings about Robert. He had to stay alive for their son.
The following night, as he was putting on his black tux, his phone buzzed with a text message. He swiped the notification and saw that it was a message from Logan:
'Hey, you ready?' ~ L
Kendall typed back, 'Always.', followed by a smiling-devil emoji. He put his phone back in his pocket when he heard a honk, signaling the limo was outside. He grabbed his keys, phone, and wallet and left his apartment. The limo driver opened the door allowing Kendall to step in. He got in to see Logan dressed in a fitted silver tux with a gray tie. He tried his best not to stare, but Logan certainly looked amazing.
"Take a picture. It'll last longer." Logan smirked making Kendall chuckle. The driver got back in his seat and proceeded to the route.
"So, when we get there, you're gonna scope the place out and you're going to—" Slowly, the more Kendall stared at Logan, the more he wanted to kiss him. Suddenly, interrupting Logan, he stretched across limo and crashed his lips against Logan's. Logan resisted but then gave into the kiss and grabbed Kendall, pulling him closer. Logan wrapped his arms around Kendall's neck and pulled him on top of him. As he lay on the limo seat staring up at Kendall, the blonde smirked and leaned down to work on Logan's neck. Logan moaned his name, thoroughly arousing him.
"Kendaaaallll…" Logan moaned.
"Yeah, baby. Say my name." He commanded and Logan complied. "Kendall…Kendall…Kendall…."
"KENDALL!" Logan shouted, causing Kendall to break from his sexual reverie. "You okay?"
"Yeah, I'm good." Kendall rubbed his eyes and shook his head. "Just dazed off." He said. Kendall sat back in his seat and continued to listen to Logan dole out instructions.
They arrived at the mansion just in time for the party. The spies checked their earpieces and molar mics to make sure they can be in contact with each other. Kendall took out two Venetian masks from a small case. He handed a silver one to Logan while taking the black one for himself.
"Masks?" Logan asked eyebrow raised.
"It's a masquerade party. Can't necessarily make a drug deal if everyone knows what you look like. To the normal world, Robert Hunt is a millionaire philanthropist; to the black market, he's the kingpin of a huge drug ring. He's dangerous, Logan." Kendall said, looking Logan directly in the eye.
"How do you know so much about him?" Logan inquired, putting on his mask.
"Let's just say, I'm very familiar with him," Kendall said putting his gun in his ankle holster. Once they both had their masks on and guns in place. They ventured from the woods next to the mansion and walked up to the line of people. The security guard looked the pair up and down as soon as they approached him.
"I'm Richard Indiana and this is Harrison Van der Slüt," Logan spoke with a southern accent. The security guard flipped his sheet and checked off their names, allowing them entry into the massive house. They walked in and were greeted by the servers with trays of champagne glasses. Kendall took one from the tray and Logan slapped it out of his hand after the server walked away.
"Kendall, we're on a mission right now. I need you sober. Now, fix your tie." Logan scolded in a whisper.
"Oh, please! One glass of champagne is not going to get me drunk. I can hold my liquor a bit better than that." Kendall said.
"Whatever…We need to find out where he's making his next shipment to and get back up there to intercept it." Kendall nodded at the information being disclosed to him.
"The best way to find that information is in whatever office he uses. Though in this place, it could be anywhere." Kendall said, glancing around the room.
"Let's split up," Logan suggested. "You mingle and keep an eye out. I'll find the office. See whatever passage is packing the most security. That's likely where the jackpot is."
"You got it, "Kendall affirmed.
Logan nodded and adjusted his mask before walking off. He deftly managed to slip past security and ran up the stairs. He came upon a long, empty corridor and it would be easy to walk down the hall. Except it wasn't. Logan knew that no man with as many secrets as Robert Hunt would leave anything in his home unguarded. Logan took out the clothes spray he hid in his jacket pocket and sprayed the hallway revealing the red lines.
"Just damn…Why is it always me who gets laser limbo? I'm getting way too old for this…Here we go." Logan launched himself into a front flip over the beams.
Kendall walked around the room full of guests and drank champagne. He tried his best to keep an eye on Robert Hunt but with all the mask-covered faces in the room, it was hard to do so. Out of the corner of his eye, Kendall saw a small, slender woman with brunette hair slip past him. She donned a silver mask that enclosed around her brown eyes along with a mermaid-style, crimson red dress.
For whatever reason to Kendall, she seemed very familiar. She looked back at him as he stared at her with piercing green eyes. As soon as they made eye contact through their masks, the brunette woman's mouth dropped open. It was as if she knew who Kendall was through the mask. Kendall stepped forward to walk in her direction, but this only frightened her and caused her to flee in the opposite direction. Kendall tried to follow the woman through the crowd but there were just too many people in the way. By the time, he got to where he had last seen her, she was nowhere in sight. Kendall sighed and turned to walk back to his original post. He had been certain that he had seen those eyes before…but where?
Logan managed to get through the lasers without setting any alarms off. Now getting into the office was going to be the harder part. He took out his lock pick and got to work. When he noticed that wasn't working, he stood and backed away a good distance away from the door, then spun and kicked the door at its weakest point. The door didn't budge one bit. Logan huffed in frustration when he tried the most basic maneuver: twisting the knob. To his surprise, the knob turned and the door swung open. "Seriously?!" He whispered and stormed into the room.
The room was vacant and only contained a small filing cabinet with a single light swinging above it. Considering how expensive the mansion is, you'd think they would've purchased different lighting fixtures. The room certainly gave Logan the chills, but he was there for one thing and wasn't gonna leave until he obtained it. He walked over to the filing cabinet and squatted down to its level. He pulled on the handles to see if it would open and to his dismay, it didn't budge.
"This is Phoenix to Dark Horse, do you copy?" Logan spoke into his mic. There was a long pause until he heard the click.
"Go for Dark Horse." The blonde answered.
"I think I'm in the room where the list of contacts are in but I get this weird feeling being in here too," Logan said jiggling the lock with the tools. "Okay, just be careful."
"Are the guards still there?" Logan asked. "Yeah…All 50 of them." Kendall replied observing the room.
"Okay, good!" At last, Logan got the drawer open and saw there was only a small piece of paper. Logan opened the note and felt himself go pale. The note read: 'GOTCHA'
Logan pressed the ear receiver to contact Kendall. "Phoenix to Dark Horse!"
"Go for Dark Hor-"
"It's a set-up! There's nothing here. We gotta leave! They know we're here." Logan's adrenaline was rushing. He sprang into action, immediately running to the door. He drew his gun from its holster on his back as he exited the room. Logan took one step into the hallway, gun aimed to shoot, only to be greeted with a swift kick to the hand that held the firearm. The gun slid across the hallway as the assailant threw punches at Logan. The brunette deftly missing the blows, ducking from each swing.
"Come on, big guy! Gotta do better than that!" Logan taunted.
Logan took the opportunity to kick his attacker in the side of his abdomen while he was vulnerable, followed by a knee to the face. The man fell to the floor, reeling from the kick but was back up in no time. He figured the attacker was one of Robert's henchmen and took great pleasure in taking his opponent down. The guard was quite tall and burly, but where Logan held the advantage was in his swiftness and agility.
The guard lunged, aiming for the spy's lower body. In one swift motion, Logan leaped into a front flip over the guard, landing behind him and kicked him the back. The henchman went hurtling into the window, cracking the glass when his head collided into the cold surface. Logan grabbed his gun from the floor and shot the man in the leg so that he couldn't follow him as he escaped. Logan sprinted down the hall looking for an exit, knowing the guard had called for back up to capture him.
"Kendall! What's your twenty?" Logan asked. He ducked into one of the closets when heard footsteps coming in his direction.
"I'm keeping tabs on Robert, who I've now seemed to have lost," Kendall groaned. "Wait, where are you?"
"I'm currently hiding in a closet from Hunt's guards after kicking one's ass. We gotta get the hell out of here. And fast." Logan peered out of the door to see if the coast was clear. It wasn't. The guards were standing a mere foot or so away, but hadn't noticed the door move.
"I'm on my way. Stay there!" Kendall said, headed to find his partner.
"Like I have a choice," Logan muttered to himself. He slumped back against what he assumed to be a shelf. His small action caused the shelf to give way and all the items on top came crashing to the floor, alerting his enemy that there was someone in the closet. Logan took out his gun and took aim at the door. As suspected, the door flew open with eight henchmen outside all pointing their guns at Logan. The brunette knew he was outnumbered and hated to surrender quickly but he had no other choice.
"Drop the gun and come out slowly. Maybe we'll think about not hurting you." The guard smirked. He seemed to be the head security for Hunt since the others seemed to follow what he said. Not to mention he was the biggest and brawniest of all the security. Standing at six-foot-seven with a bald head and goatee to boot, he was quite intimidating, even to Logan. The henchmen hustled Logan out of the closet and made sure to restrain his arms and hands.
"HEY! Be careful this suit is Armani! I can't return this if it's wrinkled." Logan groaned. The henchmen pulled the resistant Logan across the hall when Kendall came running in.
"Hands off the babe!" Kendall yelled, sprinting down the corridor. When he was just a few feet away from one of the guards who blocked his path to the brunette, he sprang up and dropkicked the guard. At least attempted to dropkick him. The guard was seemingly made of brick and barely stumbled back when Kendall launched himself at the man. Kendall laid on the floor in pain. Dropkicks were never his strong suit.
"Well, that didn't work out." Kendall groaned as he was being picked up by the rest of the stalwart men. They drug both agents into a very large bedroom with only a desk and two chairs. The guards held the two agents in place, restricting most of their movement. They knew the guards were way sturdier than they anticipated. The spies knew this particular situation was going to be harder to get out of.
"Well, well…Isn't this quite a surprise? The top two agents of Central Intelligence are to help make this party a lot more interesting." Everyone in the room knew that voice. It was Robert. He came into view from a secret entrance that was right of the room. He was a fairly tall man, with jet black hair that was combed back. He wore a black suit with the black button-down shirt that was opened at the top that slightly displayed his chiseled chest. He wasn't an ostentatious man, but tonight, he donned a simple gold necklace and gold Rolex wristwatch. In other words, he looked like your typical crime lord. Except, he wasn't Italian or from New Jersey. He paced the area in front of the two agents, sizing both of them up.
"You know, I had a feeling the agency would pull something like this, but never in a million years did I think I'd see you again," Robert smirked, looking in Kendall's direction. "And, you! I've heard so much about you. Taking down Andrew Mileaux, sleeping with this one, having his baby and now, here you are tonight, attempting to snoop around my office. It appears one CAN have it all!" He laughed, mockingly.
"Sending a bullet through your skull would be the icing on the cake." Logan retorted, making Robert spin on his heel.
"Is that so?" He grinned devilishly, chuckling to himself and walked around to his desk.
He opened the drawer, grabbed his silver pistol and pointed it straight at Logan. Logan looked Robert straight in the eye as he cocked and held the gun in his direction. Many opponents had pointed a gun at him in the past. The only thing that scared him this time is if he would be able to dodge its aim, should it be fired.
"From where I'm standing, it looks like you're going to be the one with a bullet in your skull," The crime lord's signature smirk returned. "But, shooting you would be too easy. I want to make this last. It's not every day I get the CIA's finest agents to torture and use as an example for my old friend, Reid. How is he, by the way? I hear he took over for Buchanan." Robert put the safety lock back on his gun, returning it to its holster inside his coat. "Anyway, that doesn't matter right now. What does, is how I'm going to get rid of you, while still making it fun."
"Why don't you just throw us out the window to spare us from all your monologuing. Jeez, man! I don't know how these guys deal with it." Kendall finally spoke. The grip the security guard had on Kendall seemed to tighten as his remark.
There it is. There are those quippy remarks that I've missed so much. You've grown a lot since the last time I saw you." Robert mused as he sat down in his desk chair. He placed his feet on the desk and reclined back in the chair. "I've missed that spitfire side of you too. That spark of rebellion you've always had. We need more of that in the world today." He twiddled a pen between his fingers. "That gives me the perfect idea!" Robert put his feet back on the floor and rose from his seat. He reached in his back pocket and retrieved a dime bag containing two white pills.
"Since I'm SOOO nice, I've decided that I'm going to let you two try my new product that's being tested for release." He grabbed a silver petri dish and used a pair of tweezers to take the pills out of the bag place them on the dish. "Now, these have a bit of a kick to it. The feeling I've been told is it's like 'having the sun inside of your body'. That particular notion subsequently led me to name it 'Sunshine'. The second it touches your tongue or any wet surface it dissolves instantly and sends your body into an instant burn." Robert sneered. He looked at the guards that restrained Logan and Kendall.
"Release them. They're not stupid enough to make any moves." The guards followed instructions, releasing the spies, pushing them towards the desk where Robert sat. Logan and Kendall looked at each other with relief, knowing that with their mobility restored, they can now act on the plan they made to get out.
"Now, go on. I don't have all night. My guests must simply be wondering where I am." Robert sat in his chair with a pious demeanor as if he was doing Logan and Kendall a benevolent service. He slid the dish towards them and grinned with sick delight. The dish hung just a little off the edge of the bureau, close enough for Kendall to reach.
"Tell your guests that you're going to Hell." In one quick motion, Kendall slammed his fist on the petri dish causing the pills to fly in the air. He threw his elbow behind him into the head guard's abdomen. The guard's mouth dropped as he gasped for air. At that exact moment, the pills flew backward into the guard's mouth. The guard tried to spit them back out. It was too late. They were already in his bloodstream. The guard fell onto his back and began to scream in agony and writhe on the floor. Everyone in the room watched in horror as the effects of the pills began to show. The guard's skin began to turn deep red and bloody sores began to form on his face, arms and hands. The skin took on a black, singed appearance. The sight was gruesome and frightening to behold. The guard finally stopped convulsing, his lifeless body lay in between the other henchmen and the agents. Everyone moved back when the man first fell onto his back due to his wide stature. All the people in the room were still too stunned to do anything, unsure of what to do after witnessing a man literally incinerate from the inside out. Everyone except Robert. Robert stood from his seat and drew his gun from its holster once more.
"I gave you guys the easy way out. Now, I've gotta kill you." Robert cocked the firearm, preparing to shoot them but Kendall was faster. Kendall threw himself onto the desk, rolling and kicking Robert in the abdomen. The firearm sounded but missed Logan and hit one of the henchmen in the shoulder.
"KILL THEM!" Robert shouted as Kendall tackled him to the floor. Logan jumped in the action as the remaining henchmen lunged at him. Flipping himself over the men, he kicked one in the back followed by punching another in the face. He ran to the wall and pulled the fire alarm, signaling to the guests that were present to evacuate the mansion.
Kendall and Robert wrestled on the floor. Once Robert was straddling Kendall he punched him hard in the face. Kendall tried to block the hits to the best of his ability. He was able to get one hit good hit in, making Robert groan and grab his nose. The blonde used this vulnerable moment to flip them over to where he was back on top of the drug lord. He used any and all body parts capable of inducing pain to hurt Robert. Kendall reached in his jacket pocket and grabbed his pen, which doubled as a grenade. He twisted the top to grenade mode and punched Robert one last time.
"Burn in Hell, you son of a bitch." Kendall's tone dripped venom with every word. and called out for his partner.
"Logan! We gotta go!" Kendall shouted, holding up the pen to show Logan that it had thirty seconds counting down before the explosive detonated. Logan, mid-fight, saw the timer and knew they had to flee immediately if they wanted to stay alive. The pen, despite its regular appearance, packed quite the punch. Inside of the pen was enough explosive to cause damage to the entire wing of the mansion they were in. After roundhouse-kicking one last henchman, Logan ran to the door to open it but realized it was locked when there was no door handle on their side of the door.
"Kendall! There's no handle!" Logan shouted, running to his partner. The ticking of the timer seemed to grow louder as the seconds wound down to fourteen seconds. Kendall's eyes went wide as that meant they had one option left.
"Guess that means the window."
Kendall threw the pen next to one of the unconscious guard and grabbed Logan's arm, pulling him along as they ran to the window. Kendall braced himself as he threw his weight into the glass, breaking the barrier between the agents and the outdoors. Glass flew in every direction as the agents came hurtling out. The timer struck zero and the blast from the fiery explosion sent a gust of wind that sent the agents into a faster free fall. Thankfully, the pool behind the mansion was right below the room and it was full of water. The spies came crashing into the water as the entire west wing was blown to pieces. When they regained their sense of the direction under the water, they both swam back up to the surface of the pool. They looked at the wreckage caused by the explosion and were relieved to know that they survive the ordeal.
They swam to the edge of the pool and hoisted themselves from the water. Logan began using his watch functions to call HQ.
"This is Phoenix and Darkhorse to HQ. We need an extraction vehicle immediately. We need a cleanup crew to fifty-nine the mansion of Robert Hunt. We've eliminated him and his men. Do you copy?" Logan spoke into his watch.
"HQ to Phoenix and Darkhorse. We copy. Cleanup is code eight to the site. Extraction vehicle ETA is thirty seconds." The woman replied back from HQ. The spies stood from their resting spot and ran to the rendezvous point where their rescue vehicle was waiting for them as they approached. In the distance, they could hear the sirens and see the flashing lights of emergency vehicles coming to tend to the guests at the party, who were near the danger of the explosion. The invitees huddled together scared, confused and trying to figure what was going on. The flames continued to rage in the mansion when the firefighters arrived.
Logan and Kendall climbed into the black SUV. The driver handed them warm towels to dry off with since they were dripping wet. Wrapping the towel around himself, Logan relaxed into the seat. After every mission, he loves to decompress by resting on the way back home. However, as with any mission, whenever death is involved, it never gets any easier. Especially with him seeing how the henchman burned alive from the inside out. He leaned his head against the window and watched as the burning mansion faded in the distance.
"Hey…you okay?" Kendall asked leaning over to rub Logan's arm. Logan smiled gently at the gesture.
"I'm good. Just it never gets easier, you know." Logan said.
" I know. I don't like it either. It's just the nature of the job." Kendall said, running his hand through his hair.
"Yeah. You're right." Logan replied despondently, leaning his head back against the window. Kendall sighed wishing he could make Logan forget everything he saw with the snap of a finger. They both knew what they were in for when they signed up for the job. Kendall laid his head against the headrest as the driver drove them to the hotel for the night.
In the dark hotel room, the moonlight was the only light that illuminated the space. Kendall was fast asleep, lightly snoring while Logan lay awake. Sleep evaded him any time he tried turning over. Each time he closed his eyes, he saw the guard all over again. He kept replaying the moment over and over in his head. It was something out of a horror movie. Sure, he had killed before out of self-defense and if Kendall hadn't done that to protect them, they certainly would've suffered the same fate. But, this was different. It was times like this when he wished he had someone to hold him and comfort him. Jeff wasn't there and wouldn't understand what Logan was going through.
Logan turned over to look at Kendall, who looked rather peaceful as he slept. He pushed the covers off of his body, stood up and walked over to the bed in which the blonde spy was sleeping. He looked down at Kendall's quiescent form and envied how he was able to sleep after what they witnessed. The brunette did something he thought he'd never do again: climbed into bed with Kendall. He got under the covers and moved close to the blonde, feeling the warmth radiating from his body. He laid on his side facing away from Kendall. Even if they weren't connected by physical touch, Logan still felt safe. Logan closed his eyes, attempting to fall asleep.
Logan was close to drifting off when he felt Kendall's arm wrap around his waist and pull him closer to his body. He figured his movement woke the blonde man up.
"Don't worry, babe. You're safe. I got you." Kendall kissed his ear, laying his head back on the pillow. Logan snuggled deeper into Kendall as sleep took over them.
