What's Next?

(I want to thank you for all the kind reviews of my first story of the Pink Suit. This is a follow up after Della had been shot. She and Perry finally admit their feelings for each other but they both wonder - what's next? It's not physical but mostly emotional between the two people we love most, with some angst as well. It's long but I hope you will stick with it.)

Chapter 1

It had been a week since the shooting. Della's hospital room resembled a florist shop with bouquets of flowers from Paul Drake, Hamilton Burger, Lt. Tragg and of course Perry.

Every day a different vase of flowers arrived from Perry all with a card simply stating 'I Love You'. Since that first night when she had woken after the surgery he had barely left her side. When he did leave to go shower and change clothes he had left Paul in her room to make sure she was never alone. Which is why Paul was now sprawled in the visitors chair watching while his 'Beautiful Della' slept.

Looking around the room at the flowers and noting the cards he had to smile. So the big guy, his best friend, had finally come to his senses and admitted what Paul had known all along. Of course it also meant that Paul didn't stand a chance now to win Della's heart. Not that he hadn't tried. But if it had to be someone besides him he was glad it was Perry.

As if his musings had some mystic power, the door opened and Perry walked in. Paul put his finger to his lips and inclined his head toward the sleeping form. Perry nodded and motioned for Paul to follow him into the hall. Once there Paul placed his hand on Perry's shoulder.

"It's okay Pal. She's been out since you left. No one in but the long legged blonde nurse and the doc. He took the stitches out."

Perry chuckled, "I figured you'd notice the blonde."

Paul smiled, "Well since you took the love of my life out of circulation I have to find new interests." At Perry's scowl he laughed. "Don't worry buddy, she's always been yours. It just took you this long to admit it to yourself."

Then Paul gave his friend a gentle shove toward the door. "So go make sure she knows you're here and how you feel. I'll drop by later. I think I'll see if the blonde Florence Nightingale might join me for lunch."

"Paul," the tall detective turned back, "thank you." Paul just smiled and headed down the hallway to the nurses station.

Perry quietly entered the room and slipped into the chair next to the bed. He laid his hand over Della's. A soft sigh escaped her lips and her hazel eyes slowly opened. She smiled when she saw his deep blue eyes.

"Hi"

"Good morning Sweetheart. How are you feeling?"

She attempted to stretch and winced.. Perry stood and placed his hands gently on her shoulders.

"Easy Baby. The doctor said you needed to be careful how you moved. You don't want to reopen the wound."

She brought her hands up to grasp his. "And I bet I'm not going to be able to wear a bathing suit or anything strapless again."

Perry chuckled. "Only a woman as beautiful as you would worry about that. I promise you no one is going to notice a small scar."

The blush crept up Della's cheeks. "You've seen it?"

Perry had the good sense to look away. "I might have glanced at it when the nurse changed the dressing."

Della smacked his arm. "Oh you"

Perry took her hand and raised it to his lips. "I love you Sweetheart. And the doctor said that since you have been such a good patient he will release you later this morning."

"Oh Perry that's great news. I can't wait to take a shower and sleep in my own bed." She didn't miss the smile on his face even though he turned away. Again she blushed as the implication of her words hit her. She wondered just what was running through Perry's mind. And what was she thinking? Best not go there, at least not now.

Chapter 2

It was early afternoon when Perry finally helped her from his car and up to her apartment. Even just that short walk seemed to drain her. Once inside she sank into her couch with a sigh. Perry propped a pillow behind her back and sat in the easy chair opposite.

"Can I get you something to eat or drink?" Perry's concern showed in his blue eyes.

She smiled and shook her head. "No Perry, but thank you. Why don't you go home and get some rest. I'm fine."

Perry got up and sat next to her on the couch, taking her hand in his. "Sweetheart, that's not gonna happen. I'm here for the duration so get used to me. Now how about I help you into your bedroom so you can get that shower."

Della blushed a deep crimson and turned away from him. But Perry gently took her chin and turned her back. He ran a finger down her jaw to her lips. "I didn't mean anything by that Della. I only want to make sure you are okay. I will not make any advances to you. We have plenty of time to..ah..explore our relationship."

Della smiled. "Okay. And I freely admit I'm going to need some help. So what do you say to helping a damsel in distress to the shower."

He laughed and put his arm around her to help her up. "Come on Baby." He got her as far as the bathroom door, turned on her shower, found clean towels, and a soft robe. Then with a warning to try and keep the dressing dry he closed the door. He headed back to her kitchen to see what there might be to eat. He found the makings for an omelet and started pulling pans and plates from cupboards. By the time he heard the shower stop he had a tray with juice, coffee and a plate with bacon and an omelet ready to take to her. As he approached the bedroom he called out, "Sweetheart are you decent?"

"Come in Perry". She was seated on the bed wrapped in the robe and attempting to dry her hair. Perry set the tray down and took the towel from her.

"Here let me help." He knelt in front of her and gently started drying her soft hair. When he finished he tossed the towel toward the bathroom. He placed a finger under her chin and gently touched his lips to hers. As he pulled away he smiled at her shy look. "Okay why don't you lean back and we'll get some food into you."

Della put her legs on the bed and leaned back as Perry placed the tray on the bed. "Oh my, this smells delicious. Thank you."

Perry sat on the end of the bed and watched as she finished every bite. When she was done he took the tray and set it aside. "Okay my dear. Time for you to get some sleep." He handed her a glass of water and a pill. "Pain med time."

Della reluctantly took the pill and swallowed it. Then she lay back on the pillows. Perry pulled the covers up and placed a gentle kiss on her forehead. "I'll be in the living room if you need anything. Go to sleep Baby."

Perry took the tray to the kitchen, cleaned up and settled on the couch with a law journal. At some time he had drifted off to sleep but at the first cry he was wide awake and rushing to the bedroom. She was thrashing and tangled in the sheets. He sat on the side of the bed, gathering her in his arms. "It's okay Baby, I'm here. Shhh. Come on honey, wake up."

Della began to relax as he rubbed her back and continued to whisper in her ear. She pulled back in his arms, "Oh Perry I kept seeing the gun and it hurt so much." Her tears almost broke his heart.

He brushed her damp hair away from her face and wiped the tears away with a gentle touch. "I know honey. But nothing can hurt you again. I promise I'll never let anything hurt you again" He laid her back on the pillows. "Try to go back to sleep."

As he got up to leave Della took his hand. "Please don't leave me...stay"

He nodded. Pulling the covers back over her, he lay on top, pulling her into his arms. She rested her head on his chest, feeling comfort in the steady beat of his heart. He felt her relax and knew she was finally asleep. With a smile on his face he soon followed.

Chapter 3

When Della woke to the morning sun streaming through her window, she realized with disappointment that Perry was no longer beside her. When she heard sounds coming from her kitchen she smiled and climbed out of bed. Throwing on her robe she slowly entered the kitchen. He knew she was there because of the delicate scent that was uniquely hers. He turned with a smile.

"Good morning Sweetheart" He pulled her into his arms and placed a gentle kiss on her lips. "Are you hungry?"

She made no move to pull away, instead resting her head on his chest. "Actually I'm famished. And it smells heavenly"

A deep chuckle rumbled through his chest. "Now I know you're on the mend. Go sit down and I'll have your breakfast right up."

Della sat at her small kitchen table and he set two plates of scrambled eggs, bacon and toast on the table, along with juice and coffee. Then he sat opposite her. When she didn't start to eat but just stared at him he reached across for her hand. "What is it Baby?"

She squeezed his hand and smiled, "Thank you for last night, for staying at the hospital, for...for everything."

He raised her hand to his lips. "Della I will say it again, I love you. It has taken me a long time to finally admit it and the thought that it took almost losing you to make me say it…" he stopped. He got up and knelt down in front of her, taking both of her hands. "I realize I cannot be in this world without you. I don't know where we go from here. I don't even know if you feel the same way. But I know I'm willing to find out. Please can we find out together?"

The look in his deep blue eyes and the depth of his voice had tears falling from her eyes and onto their joined hands. She leaned her forehead on his, "Oh Perry, I have loved you forever. I just don't want to be the old cliche of the secretary going after her boss. I love my job and I'm afraid of hurting your practice. It's one thing to go to dinner or dance in public as we have been but if people find out that we are romantically involved everything will change and I'm not sure for the better."

He started to say something but she continued, "but as I said, I've loved you forever so I guess if we can find a way to balance our work and private life then I'm willing to find out together what's next."

He stood and pulled her into his arms, pushing a stray curl from her face and bent his head to kiss her. A kiss that left both of them breathless. When he finally raised his head and looked at her, those beautiful hazel eyes were shining and so full of love he thought he would drown in their depths. "I think our breakfast is probably cold."

She placed her hand on his cheek, "What do you suggest Counselor?"

Again he chuckled, "Now that's a leading question Miss Street. But I was thinking if you are feeling up to it I might take you out for breakfast."

She stood on tiptoe and kissed his cheek then his lips, "Give me a little time to get dressed and I'll take you up on your offer."

Chapter 4

A few days later in her apartment, Paul lounged in the easy chair watching Della as she stood at the window looking out at the city. For probably the millionth time he wished it was him she was thinking of. Her beauty was so amazing that Paul knew any woman he found himself with would only be a shadow substitute for the beautiful Della Street. But he consoled himself with the fact that his best friend had finally found his soulmate. And as long as Della was content to have him in their lives he would be the big brother, confidant and shoulder to cry on whenever she needed him.

Della turned back and smiled. "So you really don't know what he has planned?"

Paul sat up, "I swear to you Beautiful. He won't tell me a thing. He

told me to be here to watch you and then left, saying he had to go make arrangements for your 'trip'. You know Perry when he gets in silent mode. Nothing can make him spill."

Della sat on the couch, pulling her bare legs up under her. "Yes I know his tactics very well. He won't even tell me what to pack or how long we'll be away. I just hope nothing comes up at the office that can't wait. Poor Gertie must be overwhelmed by now."

Paul reached across and took her hand, "Don't worry about it. Gertie and I have been taking care of things just fine. Burger and Tragg are on board trying to keep the mayhem at a minimum. Perry came into the office while you were in the hospital, as long as you were asleep and I was playing watchdog. He cleared his calendar for two weeks as far as I can tell."

Della sat up abruptly, "Two weeks! He can't possibly think we can be gone an entire two weeks. He must not be thinking, he can't…"

Paul got up to sit beside her on the couch. "Easy Beautiful. Perry knows what he's doing. He's taking care of the woman he loves. You need some rest and relaxation. After all it wasn't a flesh wound. We almost lost you Della. It affected all of us, not just Perry."

She leaned her head on his shoulder. "I know Paul. And I understand how you feel. And of course Mr. Burger and Lt. Tragg. You were all so wonderful to me while I was in the hospital." She leaned in and gave him a kiss on the cheek.

"Damnit Drake can't I leave you alone with a beautiful woman for a minute without you putting your moves on her!." Perry was standing in the open door. His harsh words were tempered with a smile.

Paul stood and walked over to his friend. "Easy there Counselor. The lady was just showing me her appreciation for being her faithful watchdog."

Perry placed a hand on Paul's shoulder. "And you can add my thanks too. I wouldn't trust my girl to anyone else. But if I thought for one minute…."

Paul raised his hands in surrender, "I think that's my cue to leave." He blew a kiss to Della, "Bye Beautiful." And with that he hurried out the door.

Della stood and walked into Perry's arms. "You shouldn't tease Paul that way. You'll hurt his feelings and then you'll be without a detective."

Perry rubbed his hands up her arms. "Don't you worry about your friend. He'll be fine. So my love, are you ready for some much needed rest and relaxation?"

She looked up into his incredible blue eyes, "I would be if you tell me what we are going to do."

He bent his head to place a gentle kiss on her lips. "Well why don't you pack for sunny days, lazy afternoons and maybe a few elegant evenings."

"You're not being very helpful Counselor. How about if I just pack my entire wardrobe, will that work?"

He ran a finger down her cheek. "Well I could pack for you."

She pulled out of his arms, "Never mind. I'll figure it out."

Perry just chuckled. "Well you better get going because you have an hour before we need to leave."

She gave a small yelp, "An hour! You must be kidding."

He turned her and headed her to the bedroom, "Darling I never kid...Go"

Chapter 5

Slightly over an hour later they were in Perry's car headed only he knew where. Della was sitting with her head resting on his shoulder, just content to be with him. She must have dozed because the next thing she knew he was gently rubbing her arm.

"Hey Baby. Time to wake up." She sat up and blinked at the bright sun.

"Sorry. I guess I'm not my usual self yet. Where are we?"

"The Los Angeles Marina. Why don't you get out and stretch while I unload the bags."

He helped her out of the car and then opened the trunk. Della took a look around and noticed they were in a gated area of the marina, reserved for private owners. There were large yachts in almost every slip. There were also a few cabin cruisers and several smaller boats. Perry came around the car and took her arm.

"Shall we go." He punched in a code at the gate and started leading her down a long dock. She couldn't help but look at the different boats along the way. They were almost to the end when Perry stopped before a large cabin cruiser with the name Trident I on the back.

"So what do you think?" Della took in the sleek lines of the boat. There was a cover over the seating area in the back. There was an area topside for the skipper.

"Is this yours?"

"Yes. I bought it a couple years ago with the intention of spending a few weekends relaxing. But as you know things haven't quite worked out that way. Would you like to see more?"

"Oh yes Perry." He led her to the ladder and helped her up. "Perry it's beautiful."

He led her to the stairs leading down to the cabin. "There's a full galley, bedroom and shower." He led her back out and to the bow. There was a teakwood deck that was perfect for sunbathing. He smiled at her enthusiasm over every small detail. "So I hope you aren't prone to sea sickness."

She smiled back. "No I'm not, but where are we planning on going?"

"I thought we'd head down the coast to Cabo San Lucas if that's alright"

She put her hands on his chest. "I think that would be more than alright. And I can't wait to get started."

The dock steward arrived with their bags and Perry motioned for him to put them in the cabin. He pulled her to him and kissed her lips, "Your wish is my command Sweetheart. As soon as the steward has finished putting supplies aboard we will head out. Why don't you go below and put on something appropriate for cruising while I finish up here."

She gave him one of her dazzling smiles, "Okay Skipper." and with a salute she headed below. The first thing she noticed was that it was much larger than she first thought. She moved through the galley to the bedroom. That's when she saw that there was only one very large bed. She wasn't sure what she thought at that moment. Was she really ready for what might happen next? A mixture of emotions had her sitting on the bed and breathing deeply. She had felt so safe after the nightmare when Perry had held her. But he had been fully dressed and made no advance toward her. Now they were alone on a boat, preparing to be alone for a few days and nights. What would he expect from her? Could she do this?

His deep voice at the top of the steps startled her. "Della are you okay?"

"Sure, just trying to sort things out." She hated that her voice trembled.

He slowly came down the steps into the cabin. He saw that she was sitting on the bed, not moving, her hands clasped together in her lap. He sat on the bed next to her, but not touching her for fear of making her uncomfortable. "Baby what's wrong?"

She faced him and smiled. "Just still a little weak I guess. I'll be fine in a couple minutes." She stood up and moved to pick up her suitcase.

He took it from her and laid it on the bed. She blushed and turned away from him. Then it hit him….the bed! Perry you are the biggest fool ever he thought. He gently took her hands and pulled her to sit on the bed beside him. When she wouldn't look at him, he put a finger under her chin and lifted her face.

"Sweetheart I'm so sorry. I know what you must be thinking at this minute. I can't believe I was so foolish. I want you to know that this cabin is entirely yours. I will show you later, but just so you know, the benches at the back become a bed which is where I will be spending my nights. I told you we would take our time in this relationship and I meant it. I love you so very much but until you are ready and tell me what you want I will remain a gentleman."

"Oh Perry, I'm sorry. I guess I just didn't know what to think or what my feelings are. I'm all mixed up."

"It's okay Baby. Now why don't you do what you were going to and get changed. I'm going to get us started on our trip." he brushed his lips to her forehead and started for the steps.

"Perry," he turned back to her, "I love you so much."

"I know." and he continued up the steps. She heard the engines start up and felt the gentle movement. She opened her suitcase and pulled out a mint green shell and matching cardigan as well as cream capris. As she changed she looked in the mirror at the scar just beside her breast.

There was a puckered pink scar about 3 inches long. The doctor said with time it would heal and be no more than a slight reminder of what was there. She wondered. She threw the cardigan around her shoulders and headed up to join Perry.

Chapter 6

Watching Perry at the wheel of the boat Della thought he looked just as at ease here as he was in the courtroom. It seemed to her there was nothing this wonderful man could not do. She looked out across the expanse of water and thought that this was just what she needed for her peace of mind after the past few weeks. He knew her so well, didn't he. HIs deep voice brought her back to him

"What are you thinking about Sweetheart?"

"Just how much I need this and how wonderful you are."

He smiled, "Flattery will get you everywhere. Come over here."

She stood and joined him at the wheel. He pulled her into his arms so that she was holding the wheel and he was behind her with his hands on hers.

"Now you are in charge. Just relax and let go." She could feel the waves, the gentle vibration of the powerful engines. But most of all the man who stood behind her, trusting her, loving her. He bent and kissed her neck. "You're a natural sailor. I may just let you steer all the way."

She laughed, "Only if you want to end up in Cuba." As he continued kissing her neck she shuddered, " And if you keep that up I can't promise where we'll end up."

He chuckled, "Don't worry Baby. Actually since we got a late start we are going to anchor off San Diego. I will let you decide how we spend the evening. We can go ashore and find a nice restaurant or stay on the boat and have a quiet dinner. That's if you trust my cooking."

She leaned her head back against his chest, "I think dinner here sounds

absolutely perfect."

He nuzzled her neck once more, "Then dinner here it is. We should be reaching San Diego in about 20 minutes. If you want to relax, why don't you go down to the stern deck."

She turned in his arms and smiled up at him. "Will you always be here for me?"

He was so surprised by her request for a moment he couldn't answer. She started to pull away but he stopped her. "Della Street I promise you I will be here for you always and forever. Even if you tell me to go away I will still be here for you. You are my heart, my soul, my life. Does that answer your question?"

She rested her head on his chest, "Yes Counselor, it does."

She pulled away and headed down to the stern deck. As she sat back in the cushions she tried to get her emotions under control. This man, who could face down the District Attorney, get a confession out of any criminal, command the respect of most of his peers, had just bared his heart to her. She had no doubt that he loved her, that was obvious. But what would a relationship like this do to his practice. He was very much in the public eye. If the press got wind of their relationship, they'd have a field day. She loved this man and she wanted to be with him but there were so many questions that needed to be answered.

When Perry finally dropped anchor and headed down to the deck he found Della fast asleep. Because it was almost sunset, a slight breeze had picked up so he gently placed a light blanket over her. When she didn't stir he went below to start their dinner. He was as much at home in the small galley as he was in his own kitchen since he had it stocked the same way. He started preparing a shrimp linguine, with a salad and soft garlic bread. Since he also stocked a small wine cabinet he selected a chianti to go with their meal. He set up a small folding table and chairs on the deck, set out plates, glasses, flatware and candles. Then he went to his sleeping lady and gently kissed her awake.

"Sweetheart. Your dinner is ready." She sat up and took in the table, candles and wine.

"Oh Perry I'm sorry I fell asleep. I was going to help you." He drew her to her feet and led her to her chair.

"Baby I love doing this for you. And besides it is a small galley. Now if you start on your wine I will have your meal right up."

They talked while they ate, joking about small things. With the lights of San Diego as background they finished the wine and snuggled together on the bench. When Della's conversation slowed, Perry realized she was drifting off to sleep. He stood and pulled her up, leading her to the steps and down into the cabin.

"You need to get ready for bed and get some sleep. I'll be right up on the deck if you need anything. Goodnight Baby." He headed back up and she could hear him pushing the benches around. She pulled her nightgown from the suitcase and slipped it on then climbed between the covers and lay staring at the ceiling. Sometime later she got up, slipped on her robe and headed up the steps to the deck. She knew he was still awake because the full moon illuminated him sitting back against the rail.

He had known the moment she got up. When she reached the top of the steps he held his breath. The same full moon illuminated her lithe form, the white satin nightgown and robe flowing around her. She was barefoot so there was no sound as she crossed the deck toward him. She sat on the end of the bench, tucking her long legs underneath her.

She drew in a breath and swallowed, "I can't sleep." He still had made no move, no sound. "Could I sit with you for a while?" He shifted over to make room for her. She moved up so that she was sitting next to him. He pulled a blanket up around her and pulled her close so that her head rested on his shoulder. He finally let out a breath and relaxed a little. He turned and gently placed a kiss on her forehead.

"Do you need a pain pill?"

She shook her head. "No. I guess maybe it's just….." Her voice trailed off.

Again he kissed her forehead, "Just what Baby?"

She shifted in his arms so she faced him. "I just want you to hold me. I want to fall asleep in your arms and wake up to you in the morning." She drew in a breath, "Can we just…" He bent his head and kissed her lips.

"Yes I think we can do that." They got up from the bench and walked hand in hand down the steps to the cabin. Perry held the covers up to allow Della to slide in, then he again lay down on top. She snuggled up into his arms and put her head on his chest.

Della raised her head to look at him. "Perry won't you be cold?" He laughed softly.

"No Darling, I promise you I won't be cold." The implication of his words suddenly hit her.

"Oh Perry, I'm so sorry. I never should have asked you to do this." He put a finger to her lips.

"Sweetheart I want this so very much. I want us to become comfortable with each other. I promised you I would be a gentleman and I always keep my promises. Now relax and get some sleep. I will be here when you wake. And then we will continue our trip." He felt her sigh against his chest and then relax. "Goodnight Baby." It wasn't long before Perry drifted off to sleep, feeling her warmth caress him.

Chapter 7

Perry woke with a contented smile when he realized Della was still asleep in his arms. This was how he wanted to wake every day for the rest of his life. She moved slightly and his breath caught in his throat. Her nightgown pulled back with her movement and he saw the scar. It was still very pink and raised and a mar to her delicate skin. His thoughts immediately went back to that day when his life almost ended with hers. The image of her lying on the floor with blood soaking her suit was something he knew would haunt him forever. Was he really doing the right thing asking her to share his life? What if the next time did not have a good outcome? Had he always so carelessly placed her in danger just to prove a client innocent? He had his share of threats but he always knew he could handle it. Now it was Della's life that was threatened too. He knew if anything ever happened to her, he would cease to live. What if…?

"Perry?" She was gazing up at him with concern in her eyes. She placed her hand on his cheek. "Is there something wrong? Are we sinking?"

He chuckled and kissed her cheek. "No Darling we're not sinking. But I seem to have a cramp in my leg and I didn't want to disturb you. But now that you're awake I will get up and get us some breakfast. If that's alright."

She pulled his head down to her and kissed him. "I think that would be more than alright. I'm starved!"

He kissed her back, "you always are my love."

With that he stood and headed for the galley. When she heard the sounds of pans she stood and tried to decide what to wear for the day. She decided on a deep turquoise bathing suit with a matching wrap since she thought that once they got underway she would do a little sunbathing on deck. Satisfied that the suit only allowed a tiny bit of the scar to show, she pulled the wrap on and headed to the galley.

She wrapped her arms around him from behind and put her head against his back. "Can I help?"

He gently loosened her arms and turned to her. "Not with breakfast but if you want to set the table that would be a help."

She gave him a small salute, "Okay Skipper," and headed up to the deck. She again wondered if something was wrong. He seemed distant somehow and she wondered if she had pushed him too far last night. Maybe as the day progressed she could find out.

Breakfast was a delicious quiche with fresh fruit, juice and coffee. He talked about how long it would take them to reach Cabo and what they could do once there. He had an old friend who was a retired judge that was allowing them to tie up at his private dock. There were several places of interest he thought she might like to visit. She listened with mild interest but still could not understand his distant attitude. When they had finished their meal and cleaned away the dishes, he went up to get them started. She decided to go forward and relax on the deck. As she took off the wrap she looked up to see if he was watching but apparently he was intent on guiding the boat. With a frustrated sigh she laid down on her towel and closed her eyes.

She must have dozed because she woke with a start at the touch of Perry's hand on her shoulder. "Hey Baby. I thought you might like to take a swim with me."

She smiled up at him. I'd love that. Where are we?" She looked around and then realized they were anchored near a lush green island.

"We are anchored off Isla De Cedros. It's an island off the coast near Baja. Come on, let's test the water." He helped her to her feet and to the stern where a small platform rested in the water. She noticed Perry had changed into navy blue swim trunks and had a towel draped around his neck. The sight of his broad chest and strong legs caused a warm flush up her body. She had never seen him like this and wondered what it would be like….

"Hey Della, are you okay?" he was already standing on the platform holding out his hand to help her over the rail. She stood looking at him. "Baby what's wrong?"

She gave her head a slight shake. "Just a little tired I guess. Maybe a swim will wake me up."

With that she climbed to the platform, sat down and then slipped into the water. It was warm and such a deep turquoise it almost matched her suit. She took small strokes away from the boat then rolled onto her back and floated. Perry swam around her with long sure strokes until finally he stopped and playfully splashed her. "Awake now?"

"Yes" and immediately splashed as much water at him as she could. She continued splashing him until he wrapped his arms around her and pulled her to his chest.

"I surrender. I know when I've met my match." He pulled her closer and kissed her. She put her arms around his neck and deepened the kiss. Perry was very glad they were in the water or things might have gotten out of hand. As it was he reluctantly broke the kiss. "Sweetheart as much as I love you, I don't really want to drown."

She threw back her head and laughed, "I guess you're right. Do we have time to swim a little longer?"

"Of course. But stay close to the boat. I'd hate for you to become fish food."

She splashed water at him again and took off with small strokes. He easily caught up to her and slowed his strokes to match hers. After a few trips around the boat she decided she had better stop as her shoulder was beginning to ache. They climbed back onto the platform and toweled off.

Perry stood and helped her back onto the deck. "I'm going to make us some sandwiches if you want to get changed."

"Sounds good. Do I have time for a quick shower?"

He gave her a quick kiss and turned her to the cabin steps, "Of course. I'll have lunch ready when you're done."

She went back into the bedroom and pulled out a soft pink silk blouse and dark pink capris then headed into the shower. Standing under the spray and soaping up she again replayed their swim and that kiss. Then she reached up and turned on the cold water.

Chapter 8

It was almost sunset when Perry guided the boat to a private dock in a cove below some cliffs. As he tied up and helped Della to the dock a tall, very distinguished, gray haired man walked toward them. Della hung back as the two men greeted each other.

"Perry it's about time you got here. I've only been asking you for five years."

Perry laughed, "Unfortunately I'm not a man of leisure like you." He turned and reached for Della's hand to pull her forward, "Judge Evan Lewis, I'd like you to meet Miss Della Street. Della this is the man who is closer to me than my own family."

Della reached out to shake the man's hand and he pulled her close and placed a kiss on her cheek. "It's Evan and thank you for finally bringing this obstinate man down here." Della gave him one of her dazzling smiles.

"It's my pleasure Evan."

Perry placed a possessive arm around her waist and pulled her in close. "Alright you two. Plenty of time to get acquainted. Evan how about showing Della the house."

Evan laughed, "I can see she has you completely under her spell. Come on you two." With that he led them to the end of the dock and up a flight of stairs carved into the cliff. At the top Della caught her breath. She was looking at a beautiful Spanish style hacienda. The warm coral adobe, tile roof and open concept was amazing. They had emerged onto a slate balcony overlooking the ocean. Flowers were everywhere, their scent filling the air.

Perry nuzzled her hair, "So what do you think?"

She turned to Evan with a huge smile, ""Evan I think this must be paradise on earth. I wish I could live here for the rest of my life."

Evan smiled back, "I'm so glad you like it. And you are welcome to Casa Marissa at any time, with or without Perry."

Della noticed a slight sadness in his voice and went to stand next to him, "Thank you Evan. May I ask, Casa Marissa?"

"My late wife. I built this for her."

On impulse Della hugged him gently and kissed his cheek. "I didn't mean to upset you, I'm sorry."

Evan hugged her back and looked over her shoulder at Perry. "Perry Mason if you let this beautiful woman get away I will personally see you in jail...for lack of good judgement!"

And with that the sombre mood was broken. They all relaxed and headed into the cool of the house. After Evan had shown them to their rooms and a delicious dinner had been served Della excused herself saying she was tired. She knew the two men wanted to get caught up. After changing into a dark green satin nightgown and robe she crept down the stairs to the balcony. She found an arbor with a cushioned bench that was out of sight but with a view of the town. Relaxing back into the bench she was almost asleep when she heard Evan and Perry come out onto the balcony. They stood by the ledge looking out over the ocean. She was just about to say something when Perry started to talk.

"Evan I don't know what to do." He ran his hands through his hair.

"About what? And if you say Della I may throw you over this ledge."

"That's just it Evan. She is my problem." He sat on the ledge and faced his friend.

Della held her breath and waited, suddenly so afraid of what Perry was going to say.

"Go ahead Perry."

"I love her. I have never loved anyone in my life as much as I love her. But I'm afraid. My profession has so many dangerous aspects that I never realized until Della was shot. When I saw her lying there, and all the blood...God Evan I wanted to die right there. Then the hours of waiting to see if she would survive. I knew if she died I couldn't go on. Now I want to spend my life with her but what if in doing so I put her in danger and maybe the next time she won't survive. When I think of everything I have asked her to do for me that might have endangered her…" HIs voice trailed off and he put his head in his hands.

Evan put his hand on his friend's shoulder. "Listen Perry. You know about Marissa. She was a brilliant lawyer. She faced me so many times in court and was so dedicated that when I finally decided to ask her out I felt like a teenager asking out his first prom date. She turned me down flat. So I backed off for a long time. When she decided to turn her practice over to a colleague I asked again. Then she agreed to marry me. We had five years together. Then her heart." He stopped and looked out to the ocean.

Perry stood and hugged his friend. "I'm sorry Evan. I didn't mean to dredge this up."

Evan finally smiled. That's when he noticed Della was standing in the arbor. "All I'm saying my friend is that you seem to have found someone you can love.. Don't waste your time like I did. Because trust me, you will never have the chance again, nor, I will say," he turned and held out his hand to Della as she walked over, "a more perfect woman." He kissed Della's cheek and turned to walk into the house.

Perry and Della stood looking at each other for a minute before he reached out to her, "Baby.."

Della put her hands on his chest to stop him. "Just one darn minute Perry Mason. You don't get to talk. You just stand there and listen." He dropped his hands to his sides. Her voice took on a dangerous edge, "I have been with you for two years, eight months and eleven days. In that time I have worked long hours for YOU, been arrested by Lt. Tragg on trumped up charges that YOU were responsible for, been grilled on the witness stand by Hamilton Burger because of YOU. I have starved, lost sleep and finally been shot because of YOU." Perry winced at this last statement and started to speak. "No Counselor, you're on the witness stand now and I'm going to finish." Now her voice softened a little, "But you have also taken care of me with dinners, dancing, gifts and a raise in pay. You make sure that I get home safely after long nights, that I am safe in our office. You make me laugh when it seems that nothing is going right. I want you to know that nothing, absolutely nothing, in all that time has changed what I felt for you the first time I looked into your incredibly blue eyes. Because in that moment I fell madly, hopelessly in love with you. Now if we were in front of a jury right now I would ask for a verdict of guilty as charged." She took a step forward and put her arms around his neck. "And I would ask for a sentence that you love me as much as I love you for as long as we are together." She kissed him, holding his head to hers. Perry pulled her closer and lost himself in her kiss. When she finally broke away and smiled up at him. "Well Counselor, what do you have to say for yourself?"

"I accept the verdict and the sentence. So what happens now Miss Street?"

"I think the order of business now," she took his hand, "is for you to take me to bed." He stopped her.

"Della?" She smiled at him.

"I wouldn't defy a court order if I were you." Perry threw back his head and laughed, then picking her up in his arms, he carried her into the house and up to her room.

Neither of them noticed Evan sitting in the darkened house nor heard his chuckle when he heard the bedroom door slam. He sincerely hoped that Perry was up to that marvelous woman because he was sure there would never be another dull moment in his friend's life from here on. Della

Street was definitely a force to be reckoned with. He decided to spend his night in the spare room downstairs to give the pair and himself some peace.

Chapter 9

Della woke to a gentle breeze blowing through the open window. She stretched and realised that the wound hurt much less this morning. She turned to see that Perry was no longer beside her. The disappointment she felt was immediately tempered with the memory of last night. Perry had been a gentle, considerate, passionate lover. Her every desire had been fulfilled. She rolled over to his pillow, breathing in his aftershave and smiling to herself. So deep in her musings that she didn't hear the door open. Perry stood there, holding a breakfast tray, in absolute awe of the gorgeous woman who was his completely.

"Good morning my love." She turned and smiled at him.

"Good morning Darling. You're up early." He walked to the bed and set the tray down.

"I thought you might be hungry this morning." He chuckled at her blush and gently kissed her lips. "Evan and I have already had our breakfast."

She sat up and looked at his watch. It was almost ten. "Oh honey why didn't you wake me sooner. I know you wanted to explore town today."

He kissed her again, "Relax Baby. We have all day. Now eat your breakfast and I'll be waiting downstairs when you're ready." He started to get up but she stopped him.

"Counselor, I think we are going to have to make an amendment to that sentence you received."

He brushed a finger down her cheek, "Oh and what would that be Miss Street?"

She brought his hand to her lips, "That you are not allowed to leave me in bed alone. In other words if we fall asleep together, we wake up together."

He leaned in and kissed her, "I think I can live with that. No eat your breakfast and get dressed." With that he got up and headed for the door.

"Perry," he turned and smiled, "I love you."

"And I love you."

Epilogue

The rest of their vacation was spent in days of exploring the town and surrounding areas. He had found a jewelry shop in town and purchased an exquisite amethyst ring for her. They sampled the local cuisine and just wandered, enjoying each other's company. Some days they swam in the private cove below the house or simply lay on the sand together. Evenings were spent with Evan, listening to his stories of his years on the bench and sitting on the balcony sharing quiet moments together. Nights were spent in each other's arms, learning about their love.

Then it was time to head home. Evan was sorry to see them go but Della had hugged him tightly and promised him that they would return again soon. As the boat pulled away from the dock, Della looked up to see Evan standing on the balcony. She waved to him until they were out of sight. Then Della went up to join Perry. She stood beside him until he pulled her into his embrace so that they were steering the boat together. He nuzzled her neck and sighed.

"Baby I make you a promise right now. We will be back here very soon. Now that I have something to look forward to I will make time to see to it."

She turned in his arms. "That is one promise I will hold you to Counselor. You can be sure of that."

He smiled and bent his head to kiss her, "So what's next?"

She rested her head on his chest, "I don't know," she lifted her head and smiled, "but I'm sure we can figure it out together."

"That my dear Miss Street is an excellent idea."
