For the first couple of days Mallory remained mostly in her quarters, hiding from the rest of the crew. She did go to the mess hall to get food, but always took it back to her room, preferring to be alone for the time being. It was also a better feeling as she knew that there was a security officer standing near her quarters at all times and following her wherever she went, at a bit of a distance so that she wasn't crowded, until they got to the turbolift. It was a little annoying, but she understood why. Technically she was a stranger on the ship, and after what had happened in the expanse with Raajin, letting her wander around without an escort, it caused a lot of problems. Also after she had wandered off on her own the first morning on this Enterprise without even thinking, she knew she posed a security risk. No doubt it had been Malcolm's suggestion for her extra shadow, he had no reason to trust her. No reason to trust his own sister, his own flesh and blood… from an alternate reality.
She couldn't face speaking with her brother, not when the images of him lying on the deck of the boat, dead, still haunted her. She sat at the computer and did as Archer had suggested, read mission reports, seeing what similarities and what differences there were between her own reality and this one. She couldn't read every single one as some them were protected, deemed too sensitive for the newcomer to read, but at least there were some for her. The missions in the Delphic Expanse seemed to have some of the biggest differences; the first being that in her reality, a lot more people had been killed by the Xindi probe.
As she sat, she reached into a pocket and pulled out a ring, staring at it. It was a gold band with three emeralds set into the top, the middle one being slightly larger than the other two. She set it down on the table just before a chime sounded. "Come in." She responded and the door opened to let Captain Archer into the room. "Sir." She stood up to attention, standing in front of where she had placed the ring and secretively scooped it back up into her hand to hide it. "What can I do for you, Captain?"
"I just wanted to swing by and see how you were doing." He said as he walked over to the window, glancing out at the stars. "Haven't seen much of you the last few days." He turned back to look at her, a light smile on his face.
She shrugged her shoulders and slipped the ring back into her pocket as she crossed her arms. "I've been doing what you said. Reading mission reports. It's quite amazing how similar events on board have happened between Malcolm and me. I would have thought being different people things would have been very different."
"But you're in the same career, and he is your brother." He glanced at the table where a pad was lying that she had written a few notes on. Also sitting next to the bed was a tray with a half-eaten bowl of congealing porridge and an empty mug. He had no idea if she was eating properly or not, but for now he'd let it slide, though he was going to have to keep an eye on it. "What differences have you noticed?"
"You remember when Phlox was kidnapped by the Klingons a couple of years ago?"
Archer nodded his head. "I remember Malcolm was put in a very difficult situation. Had to confine him to the brig." It had been one of the hardest decisions he'd ever had to make; to confine his tactical officer, and friend, to the brig just because he was following the orders of a former commanding officer, Harris. He looked at her, remembering something she had almost said during their meal her first night on board. "You joined Covert Operations with him, that's what you were going to say at dinner that first night, but you paused?"
She nodded her head. "Couldn't risk mentioning anything like that until I knew what had happened here. Like I said… we were inseparable."
"I didn't treat you worse did I?"
Mallory shook her head. "You didn't have to. Thankfully. I told you what was going on the moment Harris contacted me. No matter what he said, you were my commanding officer. My loyalties lay with you not him, and Phlox is my friend."
Archer smiled at the young woman, noticing that she had a certain level of wisdom beyond her years, probably due to the unfortunate events that had happened to her thirteen years ago. That mission, especially what he had done to his tactical officer, had been extremely hard for him. "What else?"
"Well… when the Xindi attacked with the first probe they killed twelve million people, and when we met up with that second Enterprise in the Expanse… Lorian's father wasn't Trip."
Jonathan looked at her "Who was?" That comment had certainly sparked his curiosity.
Mallory paused, feeling reluctant to tell him the truth. "It's probably best I don't say." She replied shaking her head as she glanced out of the window.
Archer nodded his head, though he wasn't completely satisfied with her answer as he was left with more questions in his mind. He perched himself on the edge of the desk, watching her. "Have you spoken to anyone?"
Her eyes glanced down at the floor briefly, feeling as if she had been brought to the principal's office for doing something bad. "Apart from you, the quartermaster and Phlox? Not really. It's a little awkward. I know so much about everyone on board, yet no one knows anything about me."
Nodding his head he stood up. "I understand, but talking to others will help, then they'll know about you." He placed a hand on her shoulder. "Especially Malcolm." He watched as she closed her eyes and looked away. The mere mention of the name seemed to make her cringe. "You can't ignore him forever. He's your brother." He headed over to the door. "Just think about it." He was about to leave when he remembered what he had actually come to tell her. "Tomorrow morning, o'eight hundred, training room."
"You want a demonstration of my abilities." She had been waiting for that. It would at last be something for her to actually do, and to hopefully move forward with her career in Starfleet, as long as everything went well.
Archer nodded his head. "The sooner we get them done, the sooner we can start working out a duty rotation for you, once approved by Admiral Gardner, of course."
"Of course. So… Who will I be up against?"
"Mal…" He paused and watched as her face dropped at hearing that name. Slowly he nodded his head, recognising the difficulty that could pose; to make her spar against her brother. "You're right, that's not such a good idea right now. I'll think of someone else."
"Thank you, Sir. I would have suggested Major Hayes, but he's not here."
"He's still alive in your reality?"
Slowly Mallory nodded her head. "He got shot by the Xindi when rescuing Hoshi, however their aim seemed to be worse and his wound was down towards the navel, so he survived. Took a bit of time before Phlox let him return to duty, so he missed out on being on the weapon to destroy it. We were good friends from early on. Nothing like how it appeared he had been here with Malcolm."
"It certainly took them several months to be able to get along." The two of them laughed slightly. "Get plenty of rest. It's going to be a long day tomorrow." With his words of wisdom still echoing in the air slightly he turned and left the young Lieutenant Riley's quarters. He had other things to attend to, though he knew for the both of them that what would mostly be on their minds would be the upcoming tests.
