District 4

Finnick POV

"Mom, Dad, what's going on?" Henna yawns, rubbing the sleep out of her eyes. We're standing in the living room, watching our parents running frantically about the house. It's early in the morning, or late at night depending on how you look at it and this is really unusual behaviour for our family.

"We've got to go" Dad stutters, only briefly glancing up as he's grabbing photographs out of the photo album. This must be serious.

"What?" Me and Henna exclaim at the same time, she looks at me with disbelief.

"Where are we going" I ask, rubbing my lips as I do when I'm nervous. I had woken up to Mom crying and Dad whispering hastily to her. Outside I could hear the Capitol bombers flying in the air and people screaming and running down the streets like madmen.

"Um...I don't know hun, it's just not safe here" My mom rushes in from the hallway, looking like she's trying to remember something "We'll figure that out later"

I heard a loud rumble from outside and the ground shakes below us. Then screaming. We're being bombed.

"We should go" Dad says standing up, "Go pack a bag quickly, only essentials"

Henna starts to cry and makes her way back to her bedroom quickly. I half jog-half run to my room. I attempt to turn on the lights but nothing happens. I assume that the Capitol must have hit the power lines, causing a power outage. I stumble around my room, shoving some clothes and a few important mementos into my backpack. I'm sitting on my bed, throwing a jacket over my arms and slipping some sneakers on when the whole house shakes. I tumble onto the floor, hitting my head in the process. I hear another boom and all the windows in the house shatter.

I hear my Mom scream and my Dad yelling "Finnick! Finick we need to leave, NOW"

I grab my bag and run out of the room and into the living room where my family is waiting. My sister is holding her arm, it's bleeding terribly and has a piece of glass sticking out of it. My mom seems like she's having a panic attack and my Dad is trying to calm everyone down. When my dad sees me he sets out the back door "Follow me, stay close" he instructs and we all listen. We move in a line, Dad in front with Henna and Mom behind him, me pulling up the rear. We creep quickly through the back alley of our neighbourhood, aiming for the swamp-like jungle that borders our town. Through the darkness I can see other people fleeing, and I wonder what their plan is once they reach the fence. The constant bombing makes it difficult to keep a good pace as well my balance but it's only when one lands on a house a few hundred meters behind us that we all are thrown to the ground likes dolls.

I get up quickly, disoriented as I try to locate my family. My dad is helping my mom get to her feet, but Henna is glued to the ground, unmoving a few feet away from me. I rush over to her and I try to wake her but she doesn't stir. I try to find a heartbeat but with no success. No no no no. Panicking I start to lift her, but that's when I notice the wound on the back of her head. The blood coats the back of her hair and I look around, the force must have thrown her against the electricity pole that stands before me. By now my parents have run over to me, realizing what's happening. My mom gasps and starts to wail and I can just see her pained expression from the moonlight.

My dad starts to pull me away but I resist "C'mon son" he urges, finally tearing me away from her body. Tears stream down my face as I run blindly and heavy, in shock with what's just happened. I can hear my mom crying in the darkness. I don't understand how they just left her there, so easily. It's their daughter.

But I don't have time to dwell on it, soon the fence is in sight. Peacekeepers crowd around it, their guns pointed as people rush towards them. I've never seen so many people in a panic like this before. At first I don't think we'll make it through, they're gunning people down and I feel myself stepping on bodies, but then I notice a few people managing to sneak through the pandemonium and jump the fence. My dad charges at a pair of Peacekeepers and I feel this is our chance. With him distracting the pair closest to us I manage to reach the fence with my mom. I hoist her up with my hands and she hastily pulls herself up the rest of the way. The loud thump from the other side notifies me she made it over. I start climbing myself when a hand grabs the collar of my jacket and pulls me down to the ground. I lay flat on my back, winded and I see a Peacekeeper standing over me, readying himself to shoot. Just when I think it's over my dad charges out of nowhere and tackles him to the ground. I latch myself back onto the fence and climb as fast as I can, but it takes me a minute, being that it's almost 18 feet tall. I'm just climbing over the top, preparing myself for the fall when I look back over on the side where my dad is. I manage to make eye contact with him for only a split second before I hear the gunshot, and see his face disappear from his head. My mouth opens to scream but I can't manage anything out.

Then I lose my balance on the narrow top of the fence and plummet down.

District 11

Thresh POV

I climb out of my bed, heading for the bathroom. We can't afford proper plumbing so we just squat over a bucket and when we're done we toss it into the pig pen outside.

While I'm squatting I hear the distant screams and cries of the citizens of District 11. The capitol has been bombing the district for almost a week now. On and off again, they don't keep a steady pace with the bombing.

~~Boom~~

The ground shakes as another bomb hits the ground.

~~Boom~~

It sounds closer this time. Eh, it doesn't usually come farther than the 3rd community.

~~Boom~~

I go flying into the wall as the bomb explodes right near our house. I pull up my pants and run out of the bathroom. One side of the house is completely gone and the furniture is all turned over and some wooden pieces are broken. I try to run into the bedroom where my sister Adriana and my Mother are sleeping where the walls are still intact. I can hear my sister screaming and my Mother calling my name. The door is jammed and I can't get in.

"Thresh...Oh Thresh, where are you? Thresh" My Mother keeps bawling, just on the other side of the door.

"Mom! Adriana! It's going to be all right, ju-just back away from the door...I'm going to break it down" I say nervously.

"O-okay" I hear Adriana say. I start to hit my body against the door. 1...2...3...4 times and the door breaks open to reveal my sister and mother huddled up against the far corner of the room.

"We have to go! It's not safe here anymore" I say motioning my hand towards the door.

"Come on" Mother says, gripping Adriana's arm. I lead them out of the house and towards the borders of the District. I don't have much of a plan other than getting out of the line of fire. Now the screams are closer and people all around me are running. Amidst all the panic I notice Rue's family. I glance back to their house, or, where their house was. All I can see now is destruction.

We quickly reach the fence, along with a few other families. Some Peacekeepers are trying to prevent the citizens from escaping, but they're outnumbered. Some people must have gotten through because there are huge gashes in the wire fence. We crawl through one of the bigger ones, Rue's family following close behind.

When we get through the fence we run away from the District border as fast as we can. When I think we've ran far enough we stop for a rest. After a few minutes the Timbins come into view.

"Oh, Adriana...are you hurt?" Rue asks. Her and Adriana are best friends, despite their age. Rue is a very friendly person.

"No, just" Adriana says bent over gasping, "really exhausted"

"Good" Rue says. I notice the frightful faces of her younger siblings, Leo, Catherine and Maggie. Their parents look overwhelmed and I decide then that we'll still together.

Rue POV

I'm trying to calm my little sister down, but she just won't stop talking.

"Why does the capitol want to bomb us Rue? It's hard to sleep when the ground keeps shaking. Have you noticed that, Rue? I've noticed! Do you know what I else I noticed? I noticed that when people don't have enough sleep they get very cranky and-"

"Catherine, if you think that people get cranky from lack of sleep, maybe you should let me sleep or else I'm going to get very cranky tomorrow" I warn, my patience starting to wear thin. She nods in agreement and rolls onto her side. I cuddle in closer to her and I pull our blanket up to my neck.

~~Boom~~

"Aaagh" Catherine exclaims sitting up tugging down the blanket I had just moved. I groan inwardly. Thankfully the bombs never seem to hit houses, they're just meant to keep us under control, but it's still scary.

"What if the bomb hits our house" She whispers, looking up at me with big brown eyes.

"It won't I promise" I say, even though I can't promise anything.

~~Boom~~

Catherine screams and now everyone in the room is awake. My parents suddenly burst into the room. "Get up", they say, pulling the blankets off of everyone's beds "Get outside as quick as you can" they each grab one of my younger siblings and lead the way out the door.

"What? Why?" I ask, running after them in my pyjamas. But then I know, the bombs are hitting houses now. I look around and find much of our neighbourhood up in flames or completely obliterated. Once we're further down the path I hear another loud boom and the ground goes rocky under our feet. I turn around and our house is gone.
