What you're about to read is not a new story. This is a new version of a story I posted a while back but only posted one chapter for. Mostly because I didn't remember enough about Durarara after spending a long time not watching it when I posted this. I still haven't watched Durarara again since then, but I did recently begin reading the light novels, and within the last twenty-four hours, I read the second one from prologue to epilogue, meaning I'm almost up to the third one, which I think covers my favorite arc in the anime. While reading the second light novel, I suddenly remembered I'd written a chapter for a Durarara fanfiction I meant to continue, but never did, but I also decided I should probably redo chapter one and expand it a bit more before I continue writing a story I haven't been motivated to write for too long. That being said, this is the result of that decision. I hope you all enjoy this story!

Disclaimer: I do not own Durarara. It is owned by Ryohgo Narita. The only things I own are this story and the OCs, since I am going to add a few to this story.

Heiwajima couldn't believe the fate that Orihara had suffered when he arrived under the bridge, where that call had instructed him to go. The poor bastard's face was barely recognizable. Only the open coat he was wearing - which was made of cotton and had a shearing fur hood on the back - had given him the idea as to who it was. Assuming it was another one of Izaya's damn tricks, Shizuo pulled out his cell phone and went to his call history. Never once did he save this asshole's phone number, but the many times he'd been called by Izaya to harass him had pretty much given his number a permanent spot in his phone's history.

When he called Izaya, he'd heard one ring on the phone in his ear. Yeah, there's no way that's really him. I don't hear a ringtone arou- Shizuo suddenly paused, hearing the second chorus from the song The Beginning by ONE OK ROCK playing. "Just tell me why, baby! They might call me-" Shizuo hung up, not even making the assumption that it was just convenient timing that someone was calling this person's phone when he made the call. It was after 12:30 when he received the call. Who makes a call after 12:30 in Ikebukuro?

Ordinarily, the very idea of Izaya Orihara having his face beaten with a broken arm, neck and even a few gunshot wounds to his face would've been something that filled Shizuo Heiwajima with a lot of joy. This man had been a terrible person to Shizuo ever since the day they met. He'd attacked Shizuo with a knife, constantly called him Shizu-chan (a nickname he did not like being called by Izaya), gotten him run over by a truck (a fate that few people in this city could survive without being killed right away by it - Shizuo being one of those people, as he was quite possibly the strongest man in the world) and had even gone after Shizuo's own brother on an occasion. However, there was one reason Shizuo was ecstatic about his adversary's early demise…

Orihara wasn't dead because of him.

Sure, Shizuo was definitely the biggest candidate to be the one who would've killed Izaya. Some people had even made bets on it being him who would eventually do it. However, Izaya was an information broker. Shizuo had heard this paraphrased in a movie, and he was 100% sure this logic applied to him, if you want to find an information broker's worst enemies, you'll find them all over the phone book. However, Shizuo had a way of hurting people who pissed him off, and he never used a gun! He swung things like streetlights and stop signs at them, he threw a dumpster at them, he even sent a reporter flying with his bare fists once, but he would never use a gun. Relying on a weapon to kill someone was a pathetic way to do the job, and even Shizuo himself hated violence. He just had difficulty controlling his anger. Even so, he'd definitely remember doing this. Many people who could get as angry as he could might black out before hurting someone and end up not knowing what they did when they came to. Shizuo wasn't one of those people however.

Shizuo didn't really have any intention of finding out who did this to Orihara. After all, he hated the bastard. However, one thing did strike him as a problem…

That call he'd received before he came here…

It happened a short enough time ago for Shizuo to remember it almost as vividly as though he were experiencing it right now. His phone began ringing, the song being Uragiri no Yuuyake by Theatre Brook: "Uragiri no Yuuyake yakkai ni kar-" Shizuo answered it: "What the hell do you want, Izaya?" he'd seen the number in the caller ID enough to recognize most of the numbers in order immediately. As soon as he answered though, he felt a very great pain in his right ear, the one the phone was held up to, and immediately held it away briefly. What he was hearing at first was a high-pitched noise and static. Signal interference, perhaps? Anything's possible in the Ikebukuro District, is how it seemed. After a short amount of time, the sound seemed to have died down and he held the phone to his ear again.

Shizuo heard a man groaning in pain. At first he'd assumed it was someone Izaya had injured. Looking back on it now, the man groaning in pain had to have been Orihara himself. A raspy voice spoke in a tone sounding evil, almost demonic even, then spoke: "Come to Ochanomizu Bridge… in the Bunkyo District… What you're looking for will be underneath it." Shizuo expected to hear a maniacal laugh after it spoke, but it didn't sound thrilled enough to expect it to laugh. Maybe he'd seen too many movies because he instead just heard the sound of the call being ended..

Shizuo did make an attempt at calling back before he headed out. While this invitation did sound like something he shouldn't turn down, he didn't want to chance it without at least trying to see what was up with that. After about six rings, he heard: "Yo, Izaya Orihara speaking."

"Izaya, what the fuck-"

"I can't come to the phone right now, but if you leave your name, number and-" Shizuo pushed the end call button.

And now, Shizuo was here. He wasn't at all interested in finding out who did this to avenge Izaya, but since it led him to find the body in a way that was very-

"Shizuo Heiwajima, get down on your knees with your hands up!" he heard a voice yell from behind him. This voice didn't sound familiar to Shizuo, but most people knew who he was as he's commonly referred to as a man in a bartender's uniform. Some people mentioned the blond hair or his sunglasses, but it was commonly just the bartender's uniform that would be brought up. Shizuo turned around with his hands in his pockets. He saw a man with a five o'clock shadow wearing a brown jacket and a police uniform hat who was pointing a gun at him with his right hand and holding a badge in his left hand. The badge was probably so he didn't think this man was faking being a cop, given that he wasn't completely in uniform.

"Look, you've got the wrong-"

"GET DOWN ON THE GROUND OR I'LL SHOOT!"

"Alright, look, you're pissin' me-" a bullet just barely missed the side of Shizuo's forehead.

"Next one won't miss," the cop interrupted.

Shizuo took off his sunglasses and stared the man down, looking like he was past the point of no return in that one instance. He put his sunglasses in his pocket, where odds are they might break, but who really cares at this point, and then shouted very loudly in blind fury. He dashed forward and pulled back his fist, as he threw it forward at the cop, he stopped just short of the man's face, not because he didn't want to kill the man for that (Believe me, he wanted to kill the man for that!), but because a light was suddenly shining on them both from on top of the bridge. Several spotlights pointed at the two of them as a matter of fact.

"Good move not finishing that punch against an officer of the law, dirtbag!" a man spoke into a megaphone from high above the two of them. "There are enough of us to kill you if you'd tried to kill him!"

Shizuo raised both his hands high in the air and turned towards the cops who were staring down at him, pointing their weapons at him in case of a worst case scenario.

"You have the right to remain silent," the cop said as he grabbed Shizuo's hands and pulled them behind his back, cuffing the left one. "Anything you say can and will be held against you in a court of law." He cuffed Shizuo's right hand next. "You have a right to an attorney. If you cannot afford an attorney, it doesn't make any difference either way as defense attorneys in Japan are pretty much seen as a joke anyway." The cop then escorted Shizuo to the side of the road where his car had been parked.

Shizuo sighed. Whoever you were that called me, you'd better hope that they don't find any evidence to let me go free before I get a lethal injection… he thought. Coz I swear on my life that if I ever find you, you'll be put to death without going on trial…

Chat Room, same night as Shizuo's arrest

[BACURA HAS ENTERED THE CHAT]

Bacura

Hey, did you hear?

Shizuo Heiwajima was arrested just a bit ago!

TarouTanaka

You serious!?

Bacura

Yeah, allegedly, he finally killed Izaya Orihara!

Setton

Wait, are you sure about that? Izaya always seemed to know how to deal with Shizuo without getting killed!

Saika

Do you think Shizuo wouldn't do it though?

Setton

I'm definitely not saying that…

TarouTanaka

What if he is innocent though?

I mean, Shizuo gets crazy mad, but Setton does have a point!

What if someone's setting up Shizuo to get him put on death row?

Setton

Then they'll probably check the body and find evidence before he goes on trial?

Bacura

Hopefully, he doesn't go on trial.

My only experience with court is from playing the Ace Attorney games, but I did read somewhere that those games are basically the opposite of the real Japanese legal system, and that it's really unfair…

Saika

!?

Bacura

Uh, don't worry though! I'm sure it won't get to trial and he won't kill anyone until he finds the person who really did it!

TarouTanaka

Well, who do you think really did it?

Setton

Honestly, that's a tough one. Izaya's got a lot of enemies. He sells information to people, which is basically the same as snitching…

Bacura

Well then Izaya's lucky he didn't end up in jail, isn't he?

Saika

!?

Bacura

I mean, I'm sure the killer will still be brought to justice though!

[ST4LK3R HAS ENTERED THE CHAT]

Saika

!?

ST4LK3R

Yes, I know what the name is. Calm down. It's the name of a song.

Saika

Oh, thank God.

ST4LK3R

I was looking around about the Shizuo arrest thing and that led me here, so I joined.

TarouTanaka

Do you think he did it?

ST4LK3R

Who the hell knows who does anything in this town to be honest? I mean, people believe in Dullahans again because of that Black Biker shit that's in this city.

TarouTanaka

Well, do you believe that story?

ST4LK3R

I like to imagine it's true.

TarouTanaka

Back to the murder of Izaya then… Do you think Shizuo did it?

ST4LK3R

Well, I come from America, and we used to believe in a thing called the fifth amendment.

That basically is how our legal system works in America.

Basically, you're innocent until proven guilty.

Even if he did do it, I don't want to see him go to prison for it unless there's proof he did do it.

Saika

!?

Bacura

So, you're saying if he did do it, and no evidence was found that he did it, you wouldn't want him going to jail?

ST4LK3R

I'd rather a thousand guilty people go free than an innocent man going to jail.

Setton

So… Do we just wait until he gets let free?

If he gets let free, that is?

ST4LK3R

I mean, if the killer kills again, and they decide the new killer might be the same as the one who killed that gay information broker, they're gonna have no choice but to let him go.

Setton

Wait. I don't think Izaya's-!

So there's the new version of chapter one of this story. I'll try to have an update regularly, but don't count your Cuccos before Link hits them one too many times and they begin trying to kill him. I hope you liked this new version of the chapter. Let me know if you think there's anything I can improve on here. And yes, there will be named OCs in this story. I just didn't have to really name any of them in this chapter was all. Oh, and for those of you who want to know what the song referenced by ST4LK3R is, there's a song by Bentley Jones with that name. It's actually about him having a stalker at one point. It's actually one of my favorite songs, haha! Anyway, I'll see you guys and gals next time! Mata ne! ^w^
